For Jason Mohns, the Sun Devils' Playoff run of 2024 was extra gratifying. Sure, his tight ends produced an All-Big 12 selection and were an integral part of the offense's success. But beyond that, Mohns—an ASU grad, a son of a former ASU coach, and Valley high school coaching legend—was a key part of the group that finally activated the Valley. Sometimes, home is where you need to be. After beginning his college career with two seasons at Texas, former Brophy Prep star Zac Swanson returned back to the Valley and transferred to Arizona State. He soon had his love of the game reignited and became a key part of ASU's defensive line as the Sun Devils made their march to the Big 12 crown. He'll once again be a critical part of the Devils' defense in the trenches in 2025.

Keith Abney flashed his potential as a true freshman during ASU's difficult 2023 season, and he went on to earn a starting job heading into 2024. Pairing with fellow starter Javan Robinson, the pair helped the Sun Devil defense lockdown opponents on the way to the Big 12 title. With a strong spring showing, Abney appears poised to level up his game once again in 2025.

A career defined by resilience, hard work, and giving back. Lawrence Guy has never been the flashiest or most-heraled player, but what he has accomplished is nothing short of incredible. After three years at ASU, the defensive tackle bounced around the NFL, putting in the work before becoming a long-time starter with the New England Patriots, a stint that earned him a Super Bowl ring. Perhaps more importantly, he has been dedicated to giving back to the community. From sharing his journey with learning differences to the great work done by the Lawrence Guy Family Foundation, he embodies everything a Sun Devil is meant to be.

Sun Devils leading Sun Devils. It's proving to be a winning formula in Tempe, from athletic director Graham Rossini down to several ASU alums leading programs. That includes Petra Pardi, who's leading one of the nation's best water polo teams.
Pardi, the daughter of a water polo Olympian, was a natural in the pool and made her way from Budapest to Tempe to play for the Devils. She would go on to earn All-America honors, and after a brief year away from the sport after her collegiate career, she landed a spot on the ASU staff. She took over on an interim basis near the end of the 2022 season before being named the permanent head coach in 2023. Last year, she led the Devils to a 23-8 record, and heading into this season's home stretch, has ASU ranked No. 11 in the nation.

A lightly-recruited player out of San Diego, Kien found his way to Tempe as a walk-on. Heading into his sophomore year last season, he was set up to be in the outfield rotation. But once he got a chance to be an everyday player, he raked...and never stopped raking on the way to hitting over .400 and becoming the 133rd All-American in ASU program history. Now established as one of the nation's best, he's looking to lead the 2025 Sun Devils back to the postseason.

Defensive tackle C.J. Fite once committed to ASU under the prior staff, decommitted after the coaching change, but then recommitted once he saw the vision Kenny Dillingham planned to bring. You likely know his story by now. After coming to ASU as a transfer, he and Jake Smith were unjustly ruled ineligible by the NCAA for the 2023 season. But he kept a positive attitude, and when he finally took the field last year, he put together a terrific season that earned him first-team All-Big 12 honors. Bypassing the NFL Draft, Xavion is back and ready to lead the Devils on another title run.

After the loss of Jordyn Tyson, Guillory put together a scorching finish to the year, scoring four huge touchdowns in critical ASU victories. He also continued to put in the hard work as a blocker, and he helped spring numerous big plays for the Sun Devil ground game during the magical season.

Trenton Bourguet saw a lot during his time in Tempe. A promising rise, the COVID year, a disappointing season, a NCAA scandal, a coaching change, and finally and deservedly, a title-winning playoff run.
Through it all, he displayed dedication, loyalty, heart, leadership, and a deft passing touch that made him—a Marana native and childhood Wildcat fan—one of the most popular Sun Devils in recent memory. With the close of his playing days, the football prodigy is now embarking upon a very promising coaching career.

Last year was a weird and frustrating campaign for the Sun Devil offense. In an effort to get things back on track, Dillingham brough in Marcus Arroyo as his new offensive coordinator.
Following a productive career quarterbacking San Jose State, Arroyo dove into coaching, working his way up over stops in college and the NFL. He made his biggest splash as Oregon's OC, winning a Rose Bowl and helping develop Justin Herbert which landing him the head coach job at UNLV. Taking over at what has historically been of the nation's most struggling programs, and during the pandemic to boot, Arroyo faced significant challenges. But the Rebels made tremendous strides over his three seasons, and the foundation he laid helped UNLV post one of the most successful seasons in its history in 2023. This year, Arroyo will look to engineer a similar turnaround for the Devils.

But with ASU's line ravaged by injuries last year, Sean Na'a was thrown into the fire early, and that included a midair position change on the team flight to Utah. Adversity reveals one's true character, and through last two years have shown Arizona State safety Xavion Alford to be a hard-working beacon of positivity.
Hailing from Houston as one of the nation's top safety recruits, Xavion played a season for Texas before transferring to USC. He flashed his immense potential in a two-interception game against ASU in 2021 before injuries sidelined him for the entire 2022 season. He then transferred to ASU, where the NCAA (eventually) denied his waiver appeal to play. But despite the setbacks and obstacles, Xavion remained focused on the present and future, helping the team where he could, working towards his return, and being a vocal advocate for the program being built in Tempe.

TJ Semptimphelter bucked family tradition by forgoing the football field for the hockey rink. After a breakout performance at the famous Beanpot Tournament while playing for Northeastern, TJ emerged as a hot commodity and transferred to Arizona State prior to last season. JJ Van Niel was a SoCal guy, who dabbled a bit in volleyball as a kid before going on to play club hockey at USC. He then spent 12 years working in the financial sector before a chance encounter sent him on a path of coaching volleyball that has included stops with the US Women's National Team, the Olympic Games, Utah, and USC before being named Arizona State's head coach this past December.
The turnaround has been immediate. After posting just one winning season in the last 7 years, Van Niel's Devils are currently 18-2 and ranked No. 17 in the nation following a massive straight sets win over No. 5 Oregon this past Sunday.

The Sun Devil defense in 2022 was...not great. At times, it was flat out bad. As anyone who watched it, the scheme rarely brought the attack to the opposing offense, putting the players in a tough spot, and the results were predictable. When Kenny Dillingham was assembling his staff, he targeted Washington State defensive coordinator Brian Ward, in large part because his scheme is built on aggression and bringing the fight to the offense.
In revamping the Devil D, Ward has had the benefit of having Travion Brown. The veteran linebacker spent four years in Pullman playing for the Cougars, and now he has emerged not only as a starter for ASU, but his experience both in the scheme and the Pac-12 has been an invaluable resource for the young group of 'backers.

It was a devastating blow heading into a a difficult year. Michael Matus, one of the defense's key starters and team leaders, was lost for the season after tearing his ACL in fall camp. While rehabbing his knee, Michael stayed active by acting in a quasi-coaching role, mentoring his fellow defensive lineman.Â
After the season, his fifth in Tempe, he faced a choice. Move on to the next chapter, or come back for another run. It really wasn't a choice. Not wanting to end his college career on a sour note, he's back in Tempe, ready to contribute to the revamped defense and to help activate the Valley.

After the departure of Herm Edwards, Shaun Aguano was elevated to be the interim head coach of Sun Devils football. His nine games at the helm resulted in a marquee win over Washington, but most impressively, he managed to keep his Sun Devils fighting hard week after week in a situation many others would pack in. When Kenny Dillingham was hired as ASU's new head coach, his first move was to retain Coach Aguano, a decision that was met with unanimous praise throughout Sun Devil Nation.

The Valley product spent four years at Iowa State, seeing action all across the offensive line. For 2022, he decided to transfer home and play for the Sun Devils. Things began well, as he earned a starting spot. Unfortunately, he suffered a broken ankle in the season opener and was lost for the season.
Now fully healthy and with a new coaching staff, Ramos re-earned a starting spot at right guard during spring practices. Beyond his skills in the trenches, he also has become one of the team's leaders, having been named to the leadership council. Things are in place, once again, to put a successful cap to his college career.

Here’s a trivia question: How many true freshman have ever led ASU is sacks? Here’s your answer: Four. Terrell Suggs, Junior Onyeali, Merlin Robertson, and B.J. Green. There’s one outlier among that group, as those first three were heralded 4-star blue chip recruits. Green was a walk-on. Ever since stepping foot in Tempe from Georgia, Green has surpassed external expectations and been a key part of the Sun Devil defense, and last year tied for the team lead in sacks. In an alternate universe, Jason Mohns is a successful chiropractor, and football in Arizona just...isn’t quite as good. But thankfully, both for Mohns and the sport, he called a career audible. The son of a successful football coach and executive, Mohns had no plans to follow in his father’s footsteps. But he eventually realized that his passion wasn’t in cracking necks, but in coaching young men, molding them on and off the field. And winning. Lots and lots of winning. Still in his early 30s, Bryan Carrington earned a reputation as one of the nation's best recruiters during a career that has taken him from Houston to Texas to USC and most recent to TCU, where he helped build the Horned Frogs into a national title game team. Since 2016, Carrington has signed 11 five-star recruits. And he's making the move to the coaching ranks, taking on the task of leading the Sun Devil cornerbacks.

Much has been made about how Kenny Dillingham is the youngest head coach in the Power 5. But the funny thing is...he's not even the youngest guy on the staff. To fill the role of wide receivers coach, Dillingham tabbed a man who held the distinction of being the youngest position coach in the NFL in 2022.
Ra'Shaad Samples was once a blue-chip wide receiver prospect whose college career was unfortunately cut short due to concussions. But since moving into the coaching ranks, his rise has been meteoric, making his way from Houston to Texas to SMU to coaching the running backs for the Los Angeles Rams at the tender age of 27. He'll now be tasked with coaching the Sun Devil wide receivers as well as resuming his role as one of the nation's most dynamic recruiters.

Soelle came to ASU in 2017 as a solid local signee from powerhouse Saguaro High School in Scottsdale. While he didn't come in with the fanfare of blue chip AZ prep stars like DJ Foster or N'Keal Harry, Soelle put his head down and went to work. He redshirted. He then made his mark on special teams. He became a valuable rotational defender. He would then become a multi-year team captain, one of the Pac-12's best linebackers, and now an NFL Draft prospect. In doing so, he became a shining example of what a hometown hero can mean to a program.

The Arizona State defense will have a new look in 2023, and that's a good thing. Chris Edmonds made a name for himself by earning All-American honors at Samford before entering the portal and heading west to Arizona State. Coming out of high school, Giovanni Sanders was a no-star recruit. That's right. Zero. But he knew he was capable of big things, so after a year at Dixie State (now Utah Tech), he bet on himself and went to a junior college, aiming to catch the attention of FBS schools. That led to a walk-on opportunity at Arizona State, where he put in the work, refined his craft, and waiting his turn.
When that chance came, Sanders was ready. He became a reliable playmaker for the Sun Devils last season, finishing second on the team in receptions and receiving yards while showing a Gary Chambers-like knack for always moving the chains. And as part of the coming home theme that's defined the early days of the Kenny Dillingham era in Tempe, D.J. is now back where it all began as the program's Manager of Player Development.

While one of the most critical aspects of modern college sports, understanding how it all works, and how it differs from the still outlawed straight up pay for play, can be tricky. That’s why I wanted to talk with Sun Angel Executive Director Brittani Willett, who joined the collective after serving in two key roles with the Arizona Coyotes.  On this episode, we take a deep dive into the inner workings of the collective and its process, examining how a dollar goes from donation to student athlete, how the group is navigating the largely unregulated and constantly evolving landscape, the challenges facing ASU in the NIL space, the strategies to activate the Valley, and so much more.

To activate the Valley, Arizona State needs leaders who know it well and coaches who know what it takes to establish a winning program.
Charlie Ragle helped build Moon Valley High School into a state champion as an assistant before taking the reins at Chaparral and leading a powerhouse program. While there, he helped guide a young 17-year-old kid named Kenny Dillingham into coaching. Ragle would then go on to coach at two Pac-12 schools before being named Idaho State's head coach last season. But when Dillingham was named ASU's head coach, the opportunity to come back to the desert and help him rebuild the Sun Devil program was too good to pass up.

The portal gives, and the portal takes. Heading into last season, Bobby Hurley brought in several newcomers to help get the Arizona State basketball program back on track. Among them was a guard from Illinois State. And like he had been for much of his career, he may have been overlooked...but not for long. By season's end, DJ Horne was ASU's leading scorer and a name to be known throughout the Pac-12.
Heading into this season, Horne is a cornerstone piece of the Sun Devil program, and as both the top scorer and a returner, he's grown into a leadership role with the squad.

What’s better than one homegrown star linebacker? TWO homegrown star linebackers. This fall, Arizona State fans will get to see something special. For the last few seasons, Kyle Soelle has emerged as one of the more productive and unsung linebackers in the Pac-12. Their love of ASU began as kids, with goals set to one day become one of the Sun Devils they watched play. The Jael Mary is one of the most iconic plays in Arizona State history, but it was just one of many big moments for the play’s namesake, Jaelen Strong. He went from a junior college transfer to one of most productive players in school history. His future was bright...but injuries and some humbling lessons cut short his NFL career. There were some hard times, but Jaelen battled, grew, and healed—both physically and mentally. He’s since become a strong advocate for the importance of mental health, something that so often in sports gets tossed to the side or is viewed as weakness, rather than the strength that it is. He also mentoring and coaching the next generation of receivers here in the Valley, passing on his on-field techniques and hard-earned off-field life lessons. And yet, as one of the best players ASU has seen in recent years, the relationship between him and the program is...basically non-existent.

It's been an eventful year for Bobby Wade.
One of the greatest high school players in Arizona history who went on to be one of the most productive receivers in Arizona Wildcats history, Wade had crossed Territorial Cup lines in recent years to work in a couple of different roles on Arizona State's staff. However, once news of the NCAA investigation broke last offseason, ASU placed wide receivers coach Prentice Gill on leave and Wade was elevated to take over the group on an interim basis.
Following the 2021 season, the interim tag was removed and Wade was made the program's permanent wide receivers coach. Now headed into 2022, Wade is overseeing a significant rebuilding effort of the position. After a back half of the season that saw major passing game struggles, the Sun Devil lost 5 scholarship receivers, including the three top targets from a year ago. Add in a brand new offensive coordinator and scheme, a brand new to be determined QB, and the Sun Devil passing game has a lot of questions to answer this fall. Will Wade's talented but collectively inexperienced group be able to step up?

Brian Billick reached the pinnacle of the sport when he guided the Ravens to a Super Bowl title in just his second year at the helm back in 2000. That team, of course, is known for having one of the greatest defenses in league history, with Marvin Lewis serving as Billick's defensive coordinator. But Billick had made his name in the years prior as an innovative offensive mind, most notably as the architect of the 1998 Vikings offense, still one of the most potent attacks in league history. Following his tenure in Baltimore, which would earn him a spot in the franchise's Ring of Honor, Billick has had a successful run as a television analyst. Now, he brings his experience to Arizona State.
In January, Billick reunited with Lewis when he was hired by Edwards to serve as an offensive analyst & special advisor to the head coach. He'll look to add his vast pro experience into helping the Sun Devils elevate an offense that will feature a new scheme and a new quarterback.
