PSA finally got rid of their matching certificate of authenticity (COA) card. What does this mean to you, the collector?
Who is PSA?

If you've been keeping your eyes and ears open with this year's football playoffs, then the name Brock Purdy won't be new to you at all.
Purdy started off as some unassuming 3rd string QB, but recently his name has been blowing up as he was given the opportunity to lead his team to 5 straight victories going into the NFL playoffs. It's not hard to start to wonder if this "from the shadows 3rd string QB" could go all the way to the Super Bowl! The sports autograph. It's the quintessential thing that any serious collector wants in their collection on a baseball, basketball, jersey, or anything else with their favorite team logo.
Luckily for collectors, most athletes give a nice, quality autograph. However, sometimes the autograph quality is not what you would hope for from many of the newer athletes. More and more these days, we see athlete's signatures turning into scribbles (if they actually try), and just a straight line if they don't. Why is this? Is it finally time!? For a long time, PSA has offered an authentication option that let's face it, didn't mean too much for collectors. Now, I used it from time to time for lower value cards in the past, mostly just to get the card slabbed, but with changing prices at PSA and a new dedication to return cards on a quicker timeline, I think it's time for this specific option to die off and be replaced.
I'm talking about the "Trading Card" authentication. I've talked about it in depth before, and today we're going a little more in-depth about why it is time for it to be put away for good!

eBay just recently added sports card authentication to listings of ungraded cards of $250 or more and graded cards of $350 or more. Each eBay sale that meets that criteria, has the card shipped to PSA or CSG to confirm the authenticity of the card.

We all want to get the best possible autograph on our sports card. Ever get a card back from a signing and think WTF happened? The ink looks like it didn't dry in the place it went onto the card or has holes in it. Streaks everywhere.
I know we all want to blame the autograph promoter for the bad autograph, but often times, it has to do with the crappy surface of the card, especially with modern cards such as Prizm and Chrome and their glossy surface.
If a card’s surface doesn’t have anything for the ink to stick to, its hard to get a good quality autograph.

We’ve all had or known someone who has had packages lost/stolen in the mail. Seems to be a running joke with the post office.
Just saw a video on @nothinglike90scards Instagram that I shared last video of a FedEx employee stealing 5 of his most important cards en route to PSA.
With PSA re-opening up its economy service I am sure more and more people will be shipping cards out to them. What are somethings you can do to protect yourself in case something like @nothinglike90scards happens to you?
Not all of this will protect you 100%, but you will feel better knowing you took some of these steps.
Let’s take a look at 10 things to do to protect yourself.
1 Insurance
Obvious one here, but if you can’t self insure or the items you are sending are irreplaceable, I would add insurance. It is fairly cheap. Put it for the replacement value.
2 Use correct size box
UPS and FedEx are sticklers for that 4” rule around the outside of the materials.
3 Take a photo of your shipping label and the cards being sent to PSA before packaging them up. Make this 1 image. All together.
4 Info on shipping label
I never ship anything from Powers Sports Memorabilia. That makes me a target. I use a different name on the ship from address.
If your business name is Joey’s Sports Cards, maybe just put your name on it and remove the sports cards.
5 Use CHECK CONTENTS TAPE
This is the tape that tells you to check the contents if seal is broken. A person opening your box would have to have same exact tape in order to seal it back up again. Might deter someone.
6 if shipping expensive items consider an AirTag
What do they do? According to Apple, Your AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud — then you can go to the Find My app and see it on a map. The whole process is anonymous and encrypted to protect your privacy. Air tags cost about $30.
7 Get a receipt
When dropping them off at FedEx or USPS for PSA shipments have them scan the package in front of you and give you a receipt.
Now you 100% know they have the package and your insurance is activated. Nothing worse that just dropping it off and not seeing a scan for 2-3 days.
8 Drop them off at PSA yourself.
Again, sending tens of thousands of dollars of cards to PSA you might consider dropping them off in person.
9 Wait for the National
PSA is at the National every year and you can drop your cards off and get them back by the end of the weekend. Of course, other grading companies are at other shows and offer similar service.
10 Make your return address a business or PO Box
Nothing worse than having your cards graded and then someone steals it off your porch. Get it delivered to a location where only you have access to it. A UPS Store, PO box, or your place of business.
We’ve all heard about recent theft and break-ins in the hobby. Explosion of the hobby and values going up, stores and collectors are becoming targets.
Just recently, Nat Turner, one of the owners at PSA, just had his car broken into in a locked residential garage overnight, stealing over 1 million in cards.
Fortunately for him, he was able to recover all of the cards.

We all have those things in our collection that just don't speak to us anymore. Maybe it is a poster we bought, or sports cards we no longer are interested in.

Why is MLB authentication the best in the baseball memorabilia industry?
5 reasons I believe this to be true.
1. It is ran by one of the world’s best leagues. Anything associated with the MLB brand you better believe they will do anything and everything to ensure it’s authenticity and accuracy.
2. It is a witness authentication hologram, meaning a representative from MLB was present for the autograph signing and witnessed the player signing your item. MLB is not an autograph authentication company like JSA where you can send them items to authenticate. They strictly witness the signings.
3. Their online database is easy to verify authenticity. Simply type in the code on your item and it will state the item and date it was signed. While inaccuracies do occasionally occur, their database is very accurate.
4. Their authentication isn’t available to everyone. Certain companies such as Fanatics have a license to use the authentication program. Makes it a bit more rare and sought after.
5. They also authenticate game used items they witness at the ballpark. If you ever want to get your game used MLB authenticated item signed, you can have an athlete inscribe Game Used on it. Whereas, if you had an item without the authentication getting an athlete to write Game Used on it can be challenging.

It might be a no-brainer to say, but in the autograph world, there are 2 huge categories everything can be broken down into. Items from players there are deceased or retired, and items from players that are still very active or even new.
Eventually, you'll even have to ask yourself, which category is better for my investing? What autographs are better to buy long-term? This can be a hard question to answer. While the new and current players feel so much more exciting and it can be so easy to get caught up in the hype and want to be a part of it.
The reality is this also makes current player items more volatile and unpredictable. For me, that just isn't the game I'm looking to play when it comes to my autographs. So today we're going to talk about why retired and deceased players might be the safer way to go.
Of course, these are just my thoughts and opinions, but it is a huge question that you need to answer for yourself if you're going to be comfortable in this hobby! I'll help you come to your own answer for this question today on the Power's Sports Memorabilia Show!

Michael Jordan. What else do I need to say? He's one of the marvels of the NBA world, and no matter how hard you try, you just can't ignore what he brings to the sport and to the collectibles hobby! Still, when someone is as big a name as Jordan is, it becomes too easy to tunnel in on the expensive items. The jerseys, basketballs, autographed items. The 1986 Fleer card. They are amazing items to have, but are they the only thing worth paying for in regards to this idle? I would argue, ABSOLUTELY NOT! Especially with many of Michael Jordan's cards well over $1,000.

Well, it finally happened the other day. I got some of my submitted cards back from PSA, and I have to say I was a bit shocked. By a significant amount, I had been graded more PSA 9s than 10s. Now I'm not saying I'm the master of grading cards, but from my overall track record, this was certainly surprising for a modern card submission such as a Lebron James 2018 Panini Revolution.
So this really begs the question. With all the recent PSA events in the 1st half of this year including the purchase of Genamint, has PSA cracked down on its grading standards? In other words, are they even harsher graders than they were in the past? To find out I dug a bit deeper and after talking with some reliable people in the hobby, it looks like this could really be a possibility.

In the sports card collecting hobby there is an obvious choice you have to make at the beginning of every purchase. Do you buy the ungraded card, or do you buy the already graded card? Of course, the graded cards cost more, but at least you know upfront the value and quality of that card!

I found a listing from clutchpoints.com of which NBA stars they considered to be in the TOP 50 players, and that inspired me to go digging a little bit and see how these guys are doing on the sports card market.
Most specifically I zoned in on their rookie cards and took an in-depth look at various stats to see who is doing well on the card market and who isn't. I know you will be surprised by at least a few of these. Plus, I would even say there are some undervalued gems hidden in this list!
We are all familiar with the famous 1986 fleer basketball set with iconic cards such as Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, and Karl Malone. But did you know there is a hidden gym within that rookie card set?
I also took at look at who were some of the hardest rookie cards to find and also which ones were the most expensive and affordable.
Is LeBron James rookie card undervalued?
Lastly, the PSA population report was taken into consideration. You will be amazed at how many of these basketball cards have extremely low numbers.

Huge news for the sports card industry, and in general the collectors market as a whole. One of the biggest and most prominent names in basketball right now, has signed an exclusive memorabilia deal with PANINI!
Luka Doncic, a long time signee to Fanatics, just signed a new deal with Panini on April 22, 2021. This raises a whole new slew of questions and reactions for any involved in the collectors hobby, whether that's sports cards or autographed sports memorabilia.
Sports card collectors and investors should be stoked about this deal. Why? Are we going to see Luka Doncic autographed cards now in Panini Prizm or Select product?

You've finally gotten that rookie card that you've been looking for. It's taken weeks or months to find, and it's finally yours! Getting it graded and recognized as a top-tier quality collectible will increase its value HUGE! With that in mind, you go staking out the options, seeing what the prices are with the various companies, and finally, pick one. The big question though, did you pick the right one?
Collecting and investing in sports cards is big business. Having a rookie card with a PSA 10 grade can increase a cards value thousands of dollars.
Having that same card graded by a low tier or no known company can make it almost worthless.
To compete with PSA, BGS, and SGC there have been quite a few sports card grading companies come on the market. Companies such as HGA and CSG.

It's the dream. You have that special card or jersey, and all you need to make that item the best it can be is an autograph. A simple signature from the pro and you finally find someplace that is doing a signing, and it costs an arm and a leg. This isn't always true, but lately, some of these autographs are getting INSANELY pricey making it difficult to add autographed rookie cards to an autograph collection.
As the hobby continues to take off, rookie signatures are getting more and more costly! Pricing is on the up and up for them. As autograph collectors this can be a tough pill to swallow.

The year started with PSA as the star in the news, and now we are apparently transitioning to Topps as the star of the next quarter. Topps just announced they are getting back into the public trading game, and what a shake-up that could bring to the hobby and sports card market.
Topps is synonymous with baseball cards, owning the Bowman brand for quite a few years. However, Topps is also known for making the most iconic basketball cards of all time, the Topps Chrome rookie cards of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.
With this new found investment, will Topps be able to secure the licensing rights to make basketball and football sports cards? Currently, Panini holds the exclusive rights to those sports. Sports card collectors and investors would love to see that happen, but will it?

2020-2021 Panini Prizm Basketball Blaster sports card boxes can be a great deal! Or can they? Well, in the eyes of a collector who is hoping to sell these boxes or their contents for a profit down the road, it can be hard to say. These things are a great deal because they are cheap, while still offering a chance for profit. Depending on other people to get your item autographed can be difficult.
It can also be especially difficult if you are sending in an expensive or hand to replace item.
Here are some tips you can follow to make sure your item turns out 100%.
1.) Contact company beforehand and tell them what you are sending in. Ask how they want payment.
2.) When sending your item in, include your contact information, where you want the item signed and what pen color.

Recently Zion Williamson’s autograph price dropped by 35%!
Why did this happen?
Prior to becoming the #1 pick by the New Orleans Pelicans, Zion was already a HUGE autograph in demand. Talking $500-$1000 depending on the item.
After being drafted, the price starting creeping towards $1,000 and above.
Why?
There was no price to base anything off of.
Zion had yet to do a paid autograph signing. All these items were signed in person or at the Duke meet and greet before the season.
Sellers were just pricing items based off what they thought they could get for them. Basically, the wild, wild, west for autographs.
So what happened?
Zion did an autograph signing and brought the price down.
A company had finally brought him in to do a paid, sit down autograph signing.
Zion isn’t worth a company paying $500-$1000 for an autograph, probably more in the $150-$200 range. No company would pay that $500 autograph price.
Thus, this is where an autograph signing actually brought the price down.
A comment I hear a lot of are “dealers are ruining the autograph market.” The thinking is by charging for autographs, the players will no longer sign for free. I haven’t seen that be the case. Honestly, I think its just anger and frustration that players they want in their collection are priced too high for some. And that’s a fair and legitimate grip. However, not everything in life is meant to be affordable for everyone. Take Michael Jordan for example. Not everyone can afford an $8,000 jersey. With all that being said, here is a clear example of how dealers helped the autograph market.

What is a razz?
I am not giving legal advice. You should seek the advice of an attorney in your state. Essentially it is a form of gambling. The seller determines an item is worth $100. He would then sell 10 spots at $10 (example). A person could pick up as many spots as they want. The names are then put into a randomizer where the names are randomly shuffled, with the top name after 5 times being randomized the winner.
Why do people do razzes?
Sellers of the item typically do them to make an item easier to sell. For example, a $500 item with 50 spots at $10 each is a lot easier for someone to pay for rather than finding 1 buyer for $500.
As a buyer, people like the thrill of winning something. Especially if they only paid $10 for it.
Why no to do razzes?
Well, typically they are illegally. Plus, you know with any gambling, the house always wins right? You almost never come out on top. In this case, the seller is the house.
Say you play 50 razzes in 1 year at $10 a pop. Each with 50 spots available (total value on each item $500). Your chance of winning each razz is 2%. Say you win once over those 50 razzes. You just spent $500 on that item you won. Not having any control over which razz you won. You would be better off saving your money and spending it on something you truly want.

If you are a Miami Dolphins or NFL fan, this might be one of your only times to pick up an autograph of an undefeated NFL head coach.
Shula is getting up there in age, he is 89. Last I checked his health was OK, but not great. I have heard from a few people that he won’t be doing anymore signings or traveling.
So what should you get on him?
Anything with the 17-0 inscription is ideal. That is where your value is.
Mini helmets inscribed 17-0 $199 .
Regular minis $149.
$499 for full-size helmets with HOF inscription. Again, 17-0 inscription is preferred.
Also, 1972 team-signed Dolphins helmets or jerseys with Dhula on it. Those around $1,000 right now, lots of value in those. Just make sure they have Shula on them.

If looking for just a Jeter autograph, now is a great time.
What should you get now?
Not a huge fan of Jeter photos since his autograph is so expensive. Only Jeter photo I have liked is the flip play vs the Oakland A's.
Baseballs rule the day for Jeter. So many to get. World series balls, 2008 all star (game at Yankee Stadum), final game at Yankee Stadium, retirement logo, or just standard MLB is a good one.
What other items? Love Jeter jerseys. He is one guy worthy of having his jersey on your wall. Even if not a die hard Yankee fan. 14 all star, 5 World Series Champ, World Series MVP, Rookie of the Year..
Bats are very popular with Jeter. Get a name model bat though. Can also engrave stats onto a big stick bat.
What to get after he gets into HOF?
All depends on pricing. I have a feeling it will be very expensive.
Hall of Fame logo balls will be a popular item. Probably more so than MLB balls with HOF inscription just due to the cost of Jeter’s inscription.

Here are my Top 10 tips that helped me grow Powers Sports Memorabilia.
Now that the 2018 NFL season is over, who are the Top 5 young autographs to buy that may be going up in value soon?

1.) I would advise against using sports memorabilia as an investment. Takes a few years to understand the market, what tends to go up in a significant amount of value. Sports memorabilia, does go up in value, but not nearly as consistent and more like a good growth stock mutual fund would. Much more reliable to invest in the stock market than sports memorabilia for that reason.
2.) With that being said, I know many of you like to buy autographs for the potential resale value down the road. So, if I were in your shoes and had a few bucks to spend and sit on a few autographs, what would I buy? Please note, this list isn’t going to cover everything. There are many different types of items you can buy. Just going to focus on a few that seem to be the most popular. Also, for the purposes of this topic, will just focus on baseball. Of course, football, basketball, and hockey are highly collectible too.
3.) Game used items. This is a no brainer as items used by the athlete tend to hold value and can be extremely rare, depending on the item. Items from a specific game too can also increase very fast. Game used items that are also autographed and inscribed the date of use will also add value. Definitely would focus on stars, Hall of Famers, perennial all-stars, etc.. As much as you may like the short stop for the Kansas City Royals, 90% of collectors probably have no idea who he is. So focus on the bigger names.
4.) Vintage autographs, especially autographed baseballs. Guys like Babe Ruth, Roger Maris. Rare guys like Thurman Munson, Roberto Clemente, etc… These can be very expensive for obvious reasons, but these are the guys every collector wants. Will always be a high demand for them. Of course, make sure you get an item that is certed by PSA, JSA, or Beckett.
5.) Baseball cards. I know this is an odd topic as most baseball cards (post 1980) are not worth crap. Some of the 1970 ones and prior do have a higher value. Yes, some of the current ones like those Ohtani cards were going for a pretty penny. But for consistently going up in value, some of the earlier baseball cards can be decent investments.
6.) Rookies. This can be hit or miss of course. But, if you can find a rookie like a Trout, Aaron Judge, or Ohtani for example that commands a high price now (but wasn’t before), those can shoot up quickly in value. Also, you will have the added value of it being a rookie year signed piece, which of course will never be a flooded market as they are only signed during one year.
7.) What would I stay away from? Autographed photos seem to not hold as much valuable as some of the premium items (jerseys, bats, etc). I wouldn’t get run of the mill items either. For example, a Mike Trout signed baseball might be cool, but those are everywhere. A Mike Trout game-used item, now you have something cool and hard to find. Definitely wouldn’t invest in any custom or non-licensed jerseys.

Preface this by saying if this was a free crappy autograph of a no name player and you are just adding random people to the jersey and you don’t care about the jersey, or if you got it on a China jersey and are like $25 into the jersey, OK do what you want. But here are 4 reasons why you should not wear an autographed jersey.
1.) Cost. You can buy an unsigned jersey for way cheaper. 2.) It will ruin the autograph. Sitting back on a seat, getting something spilled on it at a game. 3.) No doubt the jersey will get dirty at some point. Can’t wash it 4.) You will just look plain silly.

You see these just about everywhere. What are they? Why do customers buy them? Are they ethical? Just a couple questions I answer today.
Three topics today.

1.) Contact vendor immediately. I prefer doing this via email so I have documentation. Tell them what your problem is and be specific on how you would like it resolved. New item, different item, refund?
2.) Be courteous and kind. No need to be THAT guy that yells at everyone. Focus on the solution, not the problem. Sometimes it isn’t the dealers fault. Athletes can be tricky and moody at times and unwilling to do certain things they agreed to. Sometimes issues pop up like a pen exploding that weren’t foreseen.
3.) Be open to ideas and solutions. Let’s say the guy signing doesn’t sign much or ever. Might not be able to replace. So be open to different items or other solutions. 4.) Get a resolution date in writing. Say you are going to get a new item, ask when you should have it by? Or if getting done at next signing, get a firm date on that. Just so everyone is on the same page on timeline.
5.) Resolution still not met? Don’t be afraid to do a chargeback or PayPal claim. I really hate doing these because its just a pain in the but, but sometimes you have no choice.
6.) How do you help avoid this happening? Make sure you personally label your item the way you want. Take a photo of item of you drawing it out how it is supposed to be. Always pay by CC or PayPal so you have an out. Document in writing what you want done. Get a contact name and number of the person you are dealing with so you can always confirm and ask questions about the signing. Know who you are dealing with!
