Jarrow probably doesn’t need much of an introduction. He is a previous interview subject years back in the early days of The Duluth Rundown. This month, we pick Jarrow’s mind on his recent Grandma’s Marathon finish and upcoming attempt to finish his 12th Voyageur 50 Mile Trail Ultramarathon. Listen in to hear some excellent stories from perhaps the only person to be at every single Voyageur race.
July is a busy racing month, and Mike announces a strong handful of race results from all types of running events. There are a few upcoming races to get your midsummer fix, from short, long, road, trail, and multisport events on the calendar. Trail conditions are good – dry and perhaps overgrown depending on where you go.
In July’s Coach’s Corner, Tony talks about heat training and also comments on some nutrition tactics he’s been utilizing for an upcoming multi-day biking adventure. The guys talk about wildfire smoke during the Thoughts on the Run segment, and a discussion ensued regarding the recent new mile world record.
Both Tony and Mike share a few shout-outs to round out this month’s Rundown segment. Send us details on what you want to hear next month! Got a shout-out, upcoming race you’re excited for, or topic of conversation that is worth mentioning? Email us at theduluthrundown@gmail.com.
For the June 2026 interview section of The Duluth Rundown podcast, Tony and Mike did something a little different by collecting a variety of sound clips from the Grandma’s Marathon weekend. From course setup, the Hoops Running Club shakeout run at Blacklist Brewing, the bus ride to the start line, and post-race at the finisher’s area, Mike talked to some previous TDR interview guests and a few other local celebrities in the local running world. Tony captured some raw emotion from the race course itself, including a short interview with Mike while he was running at Mile 22!
This is the Duluth Rundown Grandma’s Marathon special episode! Listen in for Tony and Mike’s remarks on Duluth’s premiere running event just days away – the 50th Anniversary Grandma’s Marathon, the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, and William A. Irvin 5k. In addition, many more upcoming races are listed, and Mike announces a handful of recent race results, including the series finale and standings from the NMTC Spring Trail Race Series.
Trail conditions are great – dry, although keep an eye out for ticks, bugs, overgrowth, and other itchy/gross aspects of nature that may impede perfect off-road conditions (depending on what trail you’re on). Tony delivers a Coach’s Corner for all those running a Grandma’s weekend race, Mike reveals his Route of the Week (for the 12th time), Tony shouts out “Sir” Dave Lane for a recent award for his outstanding work in the local running industry, and more!
Listen in to a jovial conversation with local Duluth runner Tom O’Rourke as he reminisces on his running career, from starting running after college as a way to kick cigarettes, to running several marathons and chipping down his time, to decades later dipping his toes into trail ultramarathons. Tom was mentored early on by the legendary Dan Conway – listen in to hear stories from the Duluth running scene in the 90’s and 00’s.
Tony and Mike talk with Tom about training, balancing work and life obligations with training and racing, and Tom’s favorite parts about being a Duluth running. Tom’s story is taking a full circle moment has he looks forward to more trail-oriented races and getting out into the woods. The three share lots of laughs in this hilarious interview – enjoy the conversation!
In the May 2026 edition of the Duluth Rundown, numerous race results are listed, and plenty of upcoming races are available in all types of distances and formats. Trail conditions are generally good, but be aware of changing weather conditions such as heavy rain, and wildfire risks.
Tony discusses Grandma’s Marathon coming up in this week’s Coach’s Corner segment. Mike and Tony talk about two sub-2:00 marathons recently run in London, what they are into, and a handful of shout-outs.
Do you have a shout-out? Any races that you’re excited for coming up? What is a pertinent topic of discussion for our next episode? We’d love to hear from you – email us at theduluthrundown@gmail.com!
Benjamin is a lifetime North Shore Minnesota resident and has been running on area trails for most of that time. From biking to Alaska, trail ultramarathons, triathlon racing, and now going for his first true road marathon finish at Grandma’s 2026, Ben has a varied and exciting history with running training and racing.
Listen in to hear Ben’s running story, and how he balances training and racing with raising two young daughters and a career as a full-time, professional dancer and dance coach!
Race results are in from the Fitgers 5k and NCT Races. Upcoming races include a road race in Hibbing – Victory 5k, and the NMTC Spring Trail Race Series. Check out NMTC Spring Series web page for the new race schedule, which has changed from 2025. Trails in Duluth are officially closed – check websites like the City of Duluth, Superior Hiking Trail Association, and COGGS (Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores) for updates on official trail closures and conditions.
Make sure to catch our Coach’s Corner segment as Tony discusses the accumulation of mileage and how to manage fatigue. This is a timely subject as many local Twin Ports runners are loading up for Grandma’s Marathon in a few months. Mike has a gear review for a speedy “super shoe”, talks about his Route of The Week, and has a couple shout-outs.
Local Duluth runner and coach James has been running, cycling, paddling and more for most of his life. His love for Duluth running and outdoor adventure began as a student at UMD, and trail running and racing became a more serious passion as he moved back to Duluth a couple years after college and a stint working in the Twin Cities area.
Listen in to hear James’s story on how he got into running, stories from the hundreds of bike races that he’s been in, and his love for coaching and mentoring young runners (mainly at the high school level).
Amid a snowy March, race results and upcoming running events are very exclusive to the Grandma’s Marathon YAF series of races, including results from the Saint Fennessy 4k/2k and an upcoming race announcement for the Fitger’s 5k in April. Trail conditions are highly variable with snow, rain, sub-zero temperatures and above-average temperatures all forecasted within the current one-week timeframe. A general rule of thumb is that if you are leaving footprints on a snowy trail perhaps 1″ deep or more, or punching through the top layer, turn around and stay off until the trail firms up due to cold temperature or until after the spring thaw.
In this month’s Coach’s Corner segment, Tony talks about motivation and trying to find different reasons to get out the door for a run. Mike’s Thoughts on the Run is about the spectacular resource us Duluth runners have in the Lakewalk, and Tony daydreams about the summer in our What I’m Into segment.
Finally, a shout-out is made to the Duluth Foot Trail Alliance (DUFTA) for a Trail Running Film Festival screening on Sunday, April 12th at West Theater in Duluth, with a silent auction at 5:30pm and the films at 6:30pm. See you there!
Jakob is a Duluth runner and skier who recently became the fourth person in history to take the win at both Voyageur 50 Mile and Superior 100 in the same year. Listen in to hear a lively recap of how his season went and the benefits of strength and nutrition compared to sheer mileage in training. Jakob also shared his story of how he got into running, and his history of running and racing in the Duluth area across a wide variety of disciplines from fast road runs, trail ultramarathons, the Birkie and everything in between.
Catch results recaps and upcoming event announcements from a wide array of local running races. Tony and Mike discuss trail condition, balancing stress in training, and World Championships. They also share what they’re into lately, and have a couple shout-outs. If you have a shout-out, want to highlight a local race, or can share your “thoughts on the run”, email the podcast at theduluthrundown@gmail.com!
Mary is a born and raised Carlton County resident who grew up running at a young age. Inspired by Olympic track athletes as much as local Duluth pals logging miles on deer trails and through swamps before our extensive trail systems had been established, Mary has found success training for and completing races such as Boston Marathon and Superior Fall 100 Mile trail race. Listen in to hear about Mary’s running history, a few stories, and how she has balanced the importance of running in her life with listening to her body more now than ever.
Numerous local races are recapped and previewed from 1 Mile to 100 Miles, and most everything in between. Trail conditions are in prime late summer condition, although perhaps overgrown brush exists in some less-traveled areas. Bugs seem to be dying down, pre-leaf peeping season on the trails is upon us!
This month’s edition of Coach’s Corner is focused on nerves and anxiety. Tony talks about how all runners can manage pre-race nerves as well as mental tricks for training and racing to stay calm and focused. Mike’s Route of the Week is in Chester Park, Tony reflects on scepticism on the women’s marathon world record that was set in October 2024, and the guys have a few shout-outs with local athletes pursuing high-level races.
Matt is a born and raised Duluthian who grew up running (from the cops) on the Chester Park trail system, and continues to train regularly on those very same trails (fully within the confines of the law) to this day! Matt has completed multiple trail ultramarathon races, and is currently training for another finish at the Superior Fall Trail Race 100 Miler this September.
Tune in to hear how Matt got started running, stories from some of his races and trainings, and his experience volunteering on the Board of Directors for the Northern Minnesota Track Club (NMTC) helping produce the local spring and fall trail race series, Eugene Curnow Trail Marathon, and Minnesota Voyageur 50 Miler.
Tony and Mike highlight race results and news from Grandma’s Marathon, Midnight Sun Midnight Run 5k, Sawdust 5k, Sidewalk Shuffle 5k, and others. Upcoming races include the Park Point 5 Miler, Run with the Hounds 5k, Voyageur 50 Miler, Red Run 5k, Buzz Ryan Sprint Triathlon and Brewhouse Triathlon.

The report from local trails is great, and Tony talks all things race week for people toeing the line at Grandma’s Marathon weekend races. Mike and Tony discuss wildfire smoke and the AQI, Mike reviews a trail shoe and nutrition product, and both hosts are currently into dot-watching various multi-day endurance pursuits.
Emma is a Duluth native, CrossFit athlete, multiple-time Garry Bjorkland Half Marathon and Grandma’s Marathon finisher, and Certified Nutrition Specialist/Licensed Nutritionist. Listen in as Tony and Mike learn the basics of nutrition in the context of a training for running performance. This immensely important subject is confusing, complex, and full of conflicting viewpoints when it comes to ads and social media influencers.
Emma has done the legwork and schooling to become certified and licenced, and Tony and Mike take the opportunity to ask a true expert in the field just a few questions within a reasonable timeframe. We could have gone for hours longer! If you have additional questions, you can find Emma at www.emmaharvienutrition.com, email her at emmaharvienutrition@gmail.com, or find her on social media at @emmaharvienutrition.
Race results are hot off the press from the NMTC Spring Trail Race Series, Superior Spring Trail Races, Madeline Island Marathon, and Northland 5k for Food Allergy. Upcoming races are plentiful, including the Pike Lake Races on 5/31, Going Bananas Run on 6/7, CSM John S. Werner Memorial 5k on 6/14, Grandma’s Marathon on 6/21, Midnight Sun Midnight Run 5k on Friday night 6/27, and a fundraiser 5k Trail Run for the Duluth East running program coming up on July 19.
Trail conditions are optimal – green light for all of your favorite trail-based activities! This month’s Coach’s Corner segment features “The Long Run”, and Tony discusses traditional long slow distance versus a workout/race pace inclusion into your long run. Mike’s Route of the Week is gravel outside of out, and Mike is into various running clubs and NMTC getting into full swing. Tony has a couple shout-outs.
John Vallez is a local Duluth runner specializing in trail ultramarathons. A former soccer player, as well as high school and collegiate track and cross country runner, John has been living in Duluth and running on area trails for 10 years. A self-proclaimed “grinder”, John has embarked on several long-distance trail races up to and beyond 100 miles. Listen in as Mike and Tony hear tales of John’s exciting racing and training adventures, how he got into running, the people that supported John’s running through the years and ways he has passed his excitement on forward.
Race results have come in from: Iron Range Half Marathon, Summit North Trail Races, Minnesota Mile, Superior Fall Trail Races, NMTC Fall Series, and the NorthShore Run. Upcoming races include NMTC, Duluth Women’s 10 Mile, Ely Marathon, Aruna Run 5k, Grand Traverse, Twin Cities Marathon, and Whistlestop.
Trail conditions are prime, and Tony talks about crewing in this month’s Coach’s Corner segment. Both Mike and Tony have gear to review, and Mike had a couple brief conversations with NMTC Fall trail running series participants at the first race at Lester Park. Tony and Mike shout out a couple Superior Fall 100 Mile finishers
Incoming results are from a variety of races including: Carlton Daze 5k, Buzz Ryan Sprint Triathlon, Chief Frantz Red Run 5k, Voyageur Trail 50 Miler, and Brewhouse Triathlon. Upcoming races include Ragnar St. Paul to Duluth Relay, the inaugural Summit North Trail Runs, and the NMTC Fall Trail race series, which starts up on August 28.
Trail conditions “have got to be good”, by Tony and Mike can’t directly confirm. On this week’s Thoughts on the Run, Tony has been pondering very tough conditions at the Voyageur Trail Ultramarathon with extreme heat and humidity. With the warm temperatures, Mike’s Route of the Week is the Duluth Lakewalk with easy access to Lake Superior for pre- or post-run swimming.
Tony and Mike are both into the Olympic Games, and Tony shouts out local runner Tyler for a recent win at his very first 50k trail run in Michigan.
Tony and Mike run down races from June and July. Racers, race directors, running race enthusiasts out there – message us if we should know about a local race upcoming or with results via email at theduluthrundown@gmail.com!
Trail Conditions are discussed – generally open, might be overgrown. Warmer, drier weather helps keep natural surface trail closures to a minimum. In the Coach’s Corner segment, Tony discusses tips for long runs, and the hosts talk about nutrition options during Gear Review. Tony and Mike talk about the Route of the Week, what they’re into, and a shout out to past TDR interview subject Michael Koppy for his continued unreal running feats!
In the May episode of The Duluth Rundown, Tony and Mike mention lots of race results, and several upcoming races. Trail conditions are day-by-day if not hour-by-hour. Is it raining? Probably don’t go. Has it not rained for a few hours or days, and is it sunny and maybe windy? Chances are trails are in good shape!
Tony talks about the taper in this month’s Coach’s Corner segment, and Mike reviews a new shoe purchase with the Brooks Ghost Max. Tony is into gravel biking (as is Mike), and Mike mentioned gardening as a non-runny hobby as of late.
Finally, shout-outs: Lake Effect Running, the training group for a character-building triple crown hill loop in the rain, and local runner Michael Koppy completing the Cocodona 250 Miler.
Superior, Wisconsin resident Randy Back has been running in the Duluth area for about 45 years, completing over 100 marathon or longer running races, several Ironman triathlons, and lots of other events in between. Listen in to hear a small sampling of endless stories from being present in the Twin Ports running scene through the years, as well as an inspirational training and racing mindset.
Randy has recently been more involved in the Superior running world in particular, with a strong passion behind the new Superior Running Club. You will see Randy at many local running and triathlon races, and at Superior Running Club events.

Listen in to hear Matt’s origin story, his deeply-held beliefs of the importance of developing and maintaining a local culture around running, and how sharing stories with the next generation of new runners can keep that solid community engagement alive!
Race results from the Saint Fennessy 4K are broken down, and another Grandma’s Marathon/Young Athletes Foundation race is coming up with the Fitger’s 5k on April 20th. The very next weekend is an inaugural race on the Iron Range, the Victory 5k in Hibbing on April 27th.
In the Trails Report segment, Tony and Mike were a little confused at the exact status. The Superior Hiking Trail Association website’s Trail Conditions page had good advice regarding icy conditions, and to stay off the trails when the temperatures go above freezing. So, in general, trails are probably not advisable.
Tony talks training theory in this month’s Coach’s Corner segment. Tony is into gravel biking and Mike into disc golf, in addition to light jogging between the both of them.
Ding ding ding! In the Duluth Rundown fanmail bag we had a shout-out for WURD – Washed Up Runners of Duluth, which is a local running club that meets casually a few times a week. Click the link for the Strava Club and all associated details. Another club on the rise is with our friends in Superior, Wisconsin at the Superior Running Club. What running club or group(s) do you know of? Send them to the Duluth Rundown Fanmail Bag so we can all discover more groups! Email theduluthrundown@gmail.com with that, or any other shout-outs that you can think of.

Regarding trail conditions, natural surface trails in the Duluth area have been volatile, but one useful tool is the SHT Trail Conditions page: https://superiorhiking.org/trail-conditions/
