On 03 Feb, 2004 Bruce Mansfield and Philip Brady phoned Allan Moffatt to congratulate him on becoming an Australian citizen. Bruce and Phil were at an outside broadcast when they put the call through. This four minute chat shows the great sense of humour that Allan Moffatt had. Many people are paying tribute by recounting stories from his amazing career. But it's also great to know he was a fabulous guy as well.

With the passing of John Laws, I thought it worthwhile posting this to demonstrate what set him apart from all others. When Rolf Harris hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons, John took the time to explain to this caller why Rolf Harris paintings weren't wanted. Any other talkback show host would have dismissed the caller very quickly. Warning - it may be a little offensive to some ears.

Clive Robertson passed away in December 2024 aged 78. In later years from his home in the Blue Mountains he used to to listen to Bruce Mansfield and Philip Brady, often emailing the pair corrections. With his passing we thought it fitting to post this interview from 1992 when he appeared with the boys.

On his 3AW radio program on Aug 14th, 1980 Derryn Hinch said that he was reliably informed that the VFL's Head Umpire, Harry Beitzel, had phoned Melbourne player Brent Crosswell on Saturday 26 July to warn him to behave himself during the game that day. Harry Beitzel phoned in to tell Derryn exactly what happened and who was involved.

Ernie Carroll was a staple of tv screens for decades from IMT to the Tarax Show and most notably on Hey Hey it's Saturday. But he was a very humble, shy man who was rarely interviewed and never sought the limelight as "Ernie".
So it's almost fitting that he passed away as the world was geqaring up for Shane Warne's memorial service. There was no rrom in the media for anything else. Ernie probably would have liked it that way.
But he can't stop me paying tribute here.

"Give it a go" was just one of Jack Davey's many successful radio programs across the Macquarie radio network in the 1950s (Including 3AW in Melbourne). Whilst generally based in Sydney and with programs emanating from 2GB, Jack did travel the country hosting his programs. On this particular day a contestant on his program was a young 16 year old schoolboy named John Howard.
The same John Howard who would go on to be Prime Minister of Australia from 11 March 1996 – 3 December 2007.

Each evening on 3AW's Nightline program, Bruce Mansfield recited a piece to close the show. Hundreds of pieces, some stories, some poems, were recited over the years and many requests were made for a CD to be released. So we did that in 2005. Here is the album in full. Friday Forum was a staple of Caroline Wilson's afternoon program during her time hosting 3AW's Afternoon program. When Ernie Sigley took over the timeslot in the mid-1990s the segment was renamed "Friday Lunch." regulars came and went, but by 2002 Ernie was joined each week by Darren James and Denis Walter. This album was released in late 2002 and contained many highlights from the segment that year. Enjoy.

David McGee joined 3AW in 1955, Peter James joned in 1959. Both were successful personalities in their own right but the two of them posessed a wonderful chemistry when paired together in the late 1960s for their highly successful program "The Ansett Pioneer show".

When Johnny O'Keefe passed away in 1978. 3AW's Geoff Manion and his producer David Mann grabbed an interview Geoff had done with him, and packaged it up with some of Johnny's greatest songs. The special ran for an hour and aired from 3-4pm on Sunday 15th October, 1978. Since then the tape has sat in a box somewhere and, with many other specials, has finally made its way to me. Yesterday I posted a short clip of the Rex Hunt Fishing show on 3DB. When the show came to Friday evenings on 3AW, it was followed by Bruce and Phil's Nightline. So to hook listeners over, Bruce and Phil would open the show as if it were a continuation of Rex's fishing show with Bruce as Rex Hunt, Philip as Charles Barnham, and Simon as Matthew Hunt.

5 Nov, 1999. It's the day before the public vote on The Australian republic referendum. It's a two-question referendum to amend the Constitution of Australia. The first question asks whether Australia should become a republic with a President appointed by Parliament. The second question asked whether Australia should alter the Constitution to insert a preamble. Now, on the eve of the referendum, former political opponents and Prime Ministers in their own rights Gough Whitlam and Malcom Fraser join forces to urge the nation to vote for a republic. Up there Cazaly was a hit song for Mike Brady in 1979. It became synonymous with Australian Rules Football and now, even 40 years later we cannot imagine it not being a part of the AFL’s Grand Final entertainment.
If you don’t follow Aussie Rules Football but you are Victorian you would be aware of the song. If you do follow the footy you could probably sing it off by heart.
But Roy Cazaly’s playing career finished 92 years ago in 1927. To remember seeing him play in a game you’d have to be about 100 years old.
It was over a quarter of a century later that Mike Brady arrived from England with his family and it was another quarter of a century later that Mike wrote a song about him.
Why did Mike Brady write a song about Roy Cazaly 50 years after he finished playing? Is it true that it was never intended to be a full song? Who was the radio announcer friend of Mike Brady’s who nagged him to make it happen? What did the Cazaly family think of the song?

After almost 2 years of operation, MTR had failed to make the desired impact in the Melbourne radio market. A dispute arose between the co-owners of the station. Drive host Luke Grant was on air when the news came through that the station was closing effective immediately. The 5pm bulletin was not meant to be broadcast, but this had not been communicated to 2GB newsreader Amie Meehan who was interrupted shortly after the bulletin began. Not knowing she was still live to air, Amie congratulated the staff and expressed her sympathies in what was to be an unusual, but in my mind rather special end of MTR

In April 2010, the two signed an interim agreement to launch conservative talkback station MTR 1377—replacing 3MP on AM radio—to compete against incumbent 3AW. This was the first half hour.

In my early years at 3AW, listening to Friday Sport with Rex Hunt and Sam Newman with Steve Price each week was a must. It was fiery and very entertaining. This particular episode was quite tame but they still manage to sink the boot into eachother. I hope to find some more fiery episodes in the future.

The word "legend" is used all too often. But in terms of VFL/AFL Football it is certainly appropriate when used to describe Ron Barassi.

1988 through to 1990 was an interesting time in Melbourne Radio with many 3AW personalities and 3AK personalities crossing from one station to another. 3AK's bold CBC experiment had failed, as had 3AW's Thinking Person's Radio. In 1990 Denis O'Kane had taken over the reins of 3AW and initiated the rebuild, in part by taking Ross Stevenson, Dennis Donoghue, Keith McGowan and Margaret Fletcher from 3AK. 3AK in turn finally was sold off and in mid 1990 all remaining staff were all given their marching orders. This is the first 11 minutes of the last Rob Hicks and Don Chipp program.

In 1969, Don Rainsford took over the reins of the daily service programs where listeners could call in to seek advice from a vet, lawyer, marriage counsellor, or Martha Gardener, at 12.30 each day. This left an opening at 1.30pm, Don’s previous timeslot.
So 3AW introduced Tommy Hanlon Jr with a program called Tommy Hanlon’s Heart Line”. The idea was simple. Callers would phone in with a request for something they needed or wanted, each call over the hour would be given a number, and at the end of the show a winner would be announced and their request would be granted. One wish would be granted every day.

In addition to their top-rating breakfast program, John Blackman and Uncle Roy also recorded a one hour program which aired on the weekends called "Messing About". Which is exactly what they did. Here's a whole program (less music, ads, and news).

In 2010 and 2011, Anthony Simpson (Ant) and Anthony Toohey (Becks) joined ARN as the hosts of the Drive show on Mix in Melbourne and Sydney.
Originally they hosted the Benchwarmers show on regional stations until they were heard by Duncan Campbell who made the offer for them to come to ARN.
Unfortunately they were up against the incredibly popular Hamish and Andy. Personally I think it was a shame as they were responsible for some of the best drive shift radio I have ever heard.

Forever and a day, promotional reels have been made to give advertising clients a taste of the on-air lineup of a station. The episode prior to this one contained the station line-up for 1975. This one was made for 3AW in 1990. The year following the failed "Thinking Person's Radio" campaign. This is the year that "Talking Melbourne" became the station's catchphrase.

In 1988, “Upfront” was introduced.to be a program where three well known figures speak their minds. It was an effort to try to recreate the success of Norman, Ormsby and Claudia's Great Debate program. The panel of three usually consisted of Bill Tuckey, Tess Lawrence and Barry Everingham. Others who featured were Muriel Cooper, John Hindle, John-Michael Howson, Murray Nicholl, Wanda Kingston and Neil Mitchell.
The program was axed in early 1990 with the installation of Lawyers, Guns and Money in the breakfast timeslot with Neil Mitchell following on directly at 8.30.

In 1974, Claudia Wright was employed at 3AW. It was this year that one of the stations best remembered segments started. "The Great Debate" involved Norman Banks, Ormsby Wilkins and Claudia Wright. The segment would only run until early 1977.
Very little audio of the segment still exists, here's a snippett we've managed to find.

In 1986, Brian White departed 3AW, which, as well as leaving the station without a programme director, left a scheduling hole in weekends. Derryn Hinch filled the gap with a weekly profile interview called "Hinch: The other side. This was episode 2, the guest was John-Michael Howson.

Although Tom Elliott had filled in for Derryn Hinch on 3AW's Drive programme, The job became his own after General Manager Shane Healy and Programme Director Clark Forbes decided to let Derryn go at the end of 2012.
So on 14 Jan, 2003, Tom Elliott became the new Drive host. In this first hour Tom had an editorial with a solution for Newstart, Premier Ted Baillieu called in, and there was Sport with Darren Boyd.

Tony Martin and Mick Molloy hosting drive on the Austereo network was "must listen to" radio in the late 1990s. It was a ratings smash, rare for a national drive show. It paved the way for Hamish and Andy in the late 2000s and FM drive shows as we know them today.
I had no Martin Molloy audio in my archive, but was very keen to feature them here so this audio was lifted from Warren Perso's Youtube page where there is much more comedy gold to be found.
