In response to the national dialogue on racial injustice and prejudice, brought to the forefront by the senseless killing of George Floyd, as well as Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many others, DaVita leaders are stepping up to lead conversations around race and take action against the systemic racism that affects our teammates and patients.

DaVita leaders Akosua Kankam and Asher Royal join our hosts Grace Berman and Doug Miller to share stories of times when they held back from having a conversation on racial bias, as well as times when they have leaned into the conversations. Though there may be a fear of saying the “wrong” thing, we hope that this episode will inspire you to speak up with the intention of listening and learning, as well as provide tools for starting these conversations with you teams.

In this week's special episode, Kenny Gardner, DaVita's Chief People Officer, shares some tips and resources on how to lead teams through COVID-19. This podcast was recorded remotely from three different locations.

Kenny has been a DaVita teammate for nearly a decade, and has become a veteran at handling emergencies and crises, particularly hurricanes in the southeast region. He shares what's top of mind for our senior leadership team and their approach to supporting our global Village during COVID19. He also describes how challenges "without a playbook" can lead to stress, and how important it is to take care of yourself by checking in with friends and family, and remembering to laugh with your team and loved ones. Kenny's advice is to lean in the direction of optimism, and know that as a Village, we will get through this together.

This week, Chief Financial Officer Joel Ackerman shares some insight into his comfort zone and how he has stretched outside of it to learn more about himself as a person and a leader.

A self-identified introvert and highly analytic person, Wall Street felt more within his comfort zone than DaVita, where our strong culture has put him into his “learning zone” on more than one occasion. However, Joel has learned to recognize when he is outside of his comfort zone, and use it as an opportunity to learn and improve. His one tip is to look at the top three areas of your life you’d like to improve, and think about them through the lens of your comfort zone. If you could shift your comfort zone and 10% into your learning zone, what progress could you make?

We are kicking off the new decade and our sixth season of DaVita Leadership Insights. This episode, we are excited to have our guest Jeremy Jensen, Vice President in Team Pegasus, discuss the topic of building team through community service. Jeremy recounts his memories of a Bridge of Life mission that he and his team participated in, in Guatemala. He shares how this experience was a way for them to build trust, commitment and a greater sense of purpose.

Jeremy says “Sometimes being a leader is chaotic. This experience taught me that I don’t always need to be in control for goodness to happen. When there are good people around me, good things happen.”

In this episode, we’re excited to talk with Kapil Vashistha, Vice President of Pioneer Division, on a topic many of our listeners and teammates have told us they are curious about—how to lead and manage conflict. Kapil shares how he identifies healthy vs unhealthy conflict, how to nurture relationships after conflict, and examples of him mastering and stumbling in conflict situations. He leaves us with his one tip, stemming from his relationship with his father that helped shaped how he deals with conflict:

“My dad always had this phrase, “learn how to take the heat.” Listen to it. Decide for yourself whether this is going to be unhealthy wasted energy or healthy conflict. Is this something you should do that is going to make you better?”

This week we hear from two of our teammates in our Voyager Division in Connecticut—Amanda Szychulski, Clinical Coordinator, and Dora Harris, Group Facility Administrator. Amanda and Dora share with us their experience around the Power of 1:1 Check-ins. One of the biggest takeaways from practicing 1:1s regularly is that this is key in building relationships. Amanda’s one tip: Lead with your heart and before going into a conversation, treat the person on the other end of the conversation the way you’d like to be treated. Dora’s one tip: add the 1:1 appointment on your calendar and hold yourself accountable. If you have to miss it—move it! Don’t just skip it.

“These are powerful because it gives your team time with you, and time can be one of your most valuable resources. It gives you the opportunity to get to know them on a personal level.”

We have a special BONUS mini-insight to end this season, from our beloved podcast sound editor and founder of mini-insights themselves! Recently departed Wisdom teammate, Nick Ramsey, leaves us with a few final words on leadership, as he moves East with his family.

“My tip comes from filmmaker David Lynch –‘There is the donut and there is the hole. And you should keep your eye on the donut’. I interpret this as not mistaking the small part of something that might be missing, for all the opportunity that something might offer.”

This week we hear from Dave Maughan, Senior Vice President of Kidney Care Operations, about the topic of “Driving for Results, the DaVita Way”. Here at DaVita we care for each other with the same intensity with which we care for our patients. So in this episode, Dave speaks about why there is equal importance in how we get the results as what results we produce.

“It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day, and say “I’ve got a job to do today”. But realizing that doing your job is taking time to listen. It is taking time to empathize. It is how you produce the results and not just the results you produce. And that’s our job.”

Continuing on the topic of feedback—this week we are joined by Ray Follett, a Group Vice President supporting Kidney Care Operations. He takes us through his journey of mastering the art of asking for feedback. Most importantly, how to effectively receive it.

Early in Ray’s career, he was unclear on what he was doing wrong when he was faced with some tough feedback in the workplace. After that, he made it a point to actively ask for feedback so he could truly improve.

Ray walks us through his best tips including asking for specific feedback before performing, and how to generously listen to it when it’s coming to you.

We have two guests from DaVita’s great Denver area on the show this week, Cole Casey, a Group Facility Administrator, and Jen Ertelt, a Facility Administrator and Home Program Manager. They share specific, practical tips on how to create more energy in your day, so you feel like you have more time. They talk about scheduling with intentionality and share four actions that helped them personally:

  • Schedule self-care time and truly unplug
  • Make a list of things that energize and deplete you
  • Set boundaries and say no
  • Regularly reassess where you spend your time

And just to clarify, the context around the concept of saying “no” is that it should be a discussion with your manager. Certain work assignments are required to manage our clinical operations and business.

To learn more about managing your energy, check out the book Cole mentions, The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz.
