Join us as we take a deep dive into the undercurrents of the media landscape with radio personality, Matt Mittan. Matt brings a fresh perspective on the media's shift from proactive to reactionary, resulting in an evolution of the public from engaged citizens to mere media consumers. We take on global threats like Putin and North Korea, emphasizing the need for a unified front of opposition. Matt urges us to focus on nurturing our communities as a countermeasure against those with sinister intentions.

As we wrap up, we underline the importance of open conversations on pressing issues like homelessness, mental health, drugs, and economics. We have two young children, Evy (age 2.5) and Beckham(1 year). Evan works for Principal Financial and I am a practicing attorney whenwe are not working on our farm.

We have 14 Scottish Highlands, 3 British White Parks, 2 black angus (werescued), 2 donkeys, a horse, a pony, and 9 adorable goats (four are named afterthe Golden Girls.)

This fall, we have also taken cows for a little "cow therapy" to 5th Street Ministriesin Statesville and Safe Spot Child Advocacy Center in Wilkesboro. They had thechance to pet, brush, and love on our highlands. As an attorney myself, I know how important these resources are for the community so we like to bring somesmiles! We also attended the 1st Annual Davie County Farm Fest and will bedoing the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival in Elkin this year.

Additionally, we had 60 Wilkes Early College Students visit last week which was really exciting and a firstfor many of them to visit a farm. We really enjoy giving back to the community.

The Annual Brushy Mountain Apple Festival is one of the largest one-day arts and crafts festivals in the Southeast. The Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club owns, operates, and organizes the event each year. The Brushy Mountain Apple Festival is not just this club's largest fundraiser, but has become one of Wilkes County's biggest fundraisers. Over 100 civic, church and other non-profit organizations participate in the festival. For many of them, the festival has become the biggest fundraiser of the year. Over 160,000 people visit this festival during the day and it's FREE.

The streets of downtown North Wilkesboro, NC are filled with over 425 arts and crafts, 100 food concessions, 4 different music stages consisting of Blue Grass, Country, Folk, Gospel, and Appalachian Heritage. Cloggers, folk dancers, rope skippers, and square dancers provide additional entertainment venues for festival goers. Appalachian Heritage crafts are highlighted such as woodcarving, chair making, soap making, pottery throwing, and quilting. When walking through the streets of the festival observing and buying lots of the arts and crafts, Appalachian dulcimers can be heard while the smells of the variety of foods are enticing everyone's appetites. Let us not forget the apples, apples, and apples. Local apple growers set up throughout the festival selling their apples, apple cider, and dried apples. After all, this festival also pays tribute to the fruit grown and harvested each fall by apple orchardists from Northwestern North Carolina.

The Walker Center was created to address Wilkes Community College’s mission components of culture, business, industry, and training. Dr. David Daniel, WCC president at the time, took the lead in the effort to construct the center and WCC’s Foundation, the development arm of the institution, embarked on a fundraising drive that would raise $2.2 million.

In March of 1983, ground was broken on the building thanks to the 1,500 donors who contributed to the vision of the center. When construction was completed, WCC was enhanced by a 33,000 square foot building that featured an 1,100 seat auditorium, lobby, backstage area, and management area.

The dedication and ribbon cutting were held on August 24, 1984 and featured the opening performance of Gordon MacRae and Anna Maria Alberghetti. On October 24 of that same year, WCC Theatre held its production of “The Music Man” in the center as a special performance for alumni.

Over the years, interest in the John A. Walker Community Center grew as more people realized the tremendous asset such a facility provides. In addition to a vibrant performing arts center and exciting school events program, the center has hosted many business and community events. The increasing demand on the facility indicated a need for expansion. In 2000, a $1.9 million renovation expanded the ballroom, provided additional restrooms, and created a full production kitchen.

The Cherokee National Forest is divided into northern and southern sections by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 650,000-acre forest is the largest tract of public land in Tennessee and adjoins other national forests in Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia. The forest is home to 30 developed campgrounds and numerous picnic areas, over 700 miles of trails, seven whitewater rivers, two Forest Service scenic byways where you can enjoy a scenic drive through the mountains, the pursuit of wildlife, the thrill of whitewater, a night under the stars, or solitude on a backcountry trail.

Hundreds of miles of lake shoreline and water await the fisherman, boating enthusiast, skier, and nature lover. South Holston Lake, a Tennessee Valley Authority reservoir covering 7,580 acres, is considered one of the top two lakes in Tennessee and among the best in the Southeast for smallmouth bass fishing and also is well known as a fly fisherman’s paradise. The lake also provides many other recreational opportunities for residents, with 60% of its shoreline bordered by the Cherokee National Forest.

Bristol is known for NASCAR as it is home to one of the world’s greatest and most popular racetracks. Bristol Motor Speedway, which seats in excess of 150,000, hosts NASCAR Sprint Cup events in April and August and both draw fans from all 50 states and more than a dozen countries.

Music also gives Bristol a universal appeal as the city holds the honor of being named the Birthplace of Country Music by U.S. Congress in 1998. In 1927, the legendary Bristol Sessions took place in the downtown area, giving birth to the “Big Bang” of modern country music with the likes of The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers taking part in the historic occasion.

The Twin Cities boast numerous parks, golf courses, spectacular caverns to go along with plenty of great restaurants – many of which are locally owned and operated – and wonderful shopping opportunities.

Bristol is also rich in theater and arts and is home to the historic Paramount Center for the Arts, as well as Theatre Bristol. Numerous fine art galleries and studios of local artists can also be found in the downtown area.

Just in case there's anyone that doesn't know about how impactful my Partner Michele Scheve is to those she comes in contact with, here are a few words shared by members of the community, from a recent profile done by ABC News Channel 13, WLOS...

"She’s a pillar of this scene, and she’s like a comedy mom to all of us. She’s generous with her support, despite needing help herself. She’s always helping others. She checks in on us no matter how busy she is, and always encourages us because she genuinely wants every one of us to succeed. Her boundless optimism and belief in others inspires me to be more like her. She’s the kind of person who lifts others up just by being who she is. I won’t be okay if she isn’t okay."
- Asheville comedian Jess Cooley

"***Whether it’s a comedy show or advocating local music on air, Michele is dedicated to supporting the vibrant arts community we have here in Asheville. Her energy and warm presence is inviting and speaks to the family atmosphere within the creative community.” - Andrew Scotchie (Andrew Scotchie & the River Rats/The Orange Peel/Rabbit Rabbit)

"I’ve never met anyone so selflessly dedicated to showcasing the talents of others, whether it’s music or art or comedy. She and her partner Matt are pillars of the creative community and I know that bands like mine only benefit from being in her orbit. She is a fan of the highest caliber, and sets the bar for support. The world is only made better by the presence of people like her." - Robby from Krave Amiko

"She’s spent countless hours promoting local artists, producing incredible shows, and helping unify Asheville’s creative community; making it feel simultaneously special and accessible. Michele’s tenacity in both her professional and personal life is an inspiration and I’m proud to count her among my chosen family. All of Asheville is lucky to have her." - Morgan Bost, Asheville comic, Columnist for Mountain XPress***

I get asked, or commented to, all the time about what makes Michele tick and how she remains so impactful in so many people's lives, while also navigating such overwhelming medical challenges. Rather than just say what I think, I convinced her to sit down and let me "Barbara Wa-Wa" her on the radio, for all to hear - in her own words. - Matt

"Get in the moment. The right path feels easy." - Michele Scheve, Producer, Broadcaster, Artist.Be sure to visit BizRadio.US to discover hundreds more engaging conversations, local events and more.

But I don't. There's a method to the apparent scheduling madness. Well, in this episode, I decided to give a peak behind the curtain on how I manage my time and set priorities around my goals. From Joe:
"My name is Joe Donovan, I am an Outside Sales Account Executive for FASTSIGNS of Asheville. We are a local visual communications company specializing in helping businesses tell their story through customized signs and graphics.

Although not a native, I have called Asheville home since my arrival during Bele Chere weekend in 2006. Since that time I've been blessed with many authentic relationships throughout all facets of our community from business owners to leaders in the non-profit sector. My past experiences in local media, the nonprofit world, and business equipment sales have allowed me an unique understanding and perspective on the growth we have all experienced around Western North Carolina.

My goal is to learn more about Western Carolinians - the people, businesses, organizations - and help them make their statement. The aesthetics of our area are very important to me and by spending a little time and care to do it right, we at FASTSIGNS are adding to the beauty of our region everyday.

I am a graduate of Western Carolina University with a degree in Sport Management. Working for a professional hockey team in Nashville, Tennessee before returning home to the mountains where I met my bride. We now have two amazing young daughters and a couple of decent cats. I am an active member of Valley Hope Church in Swannanoa and still enjoy reliving my glory days playing pickup basketball in the “LEGENDS” group at the downtown Asheville YMCA."

Hefty penalty fines may be charged DIRECTLY to ANY Merchant who is determined to be NOT PCI-DSS Compliant. Often, this may simply mean the Business Owner or Merchant who signed their respective Merchant Agreement has not gone online and completed their PCI Survey Questionnaire. The Employee Retention Credit was revamped in 2021 to reach more businesses and help more Americans stay employed. This is achieved by providing a refundable credit to offset or potentially eliminate payroll tax for business owners who were impacted by the pandemic. This is currently one of the largest credits available to business owners, delivering thousands of dollars in credits per employee with qualified wages. DeltaERC specialists have decades of payroll experience, which has allowed them to specifically focus on and maximize the ERC program. They have found that due to the complexity (the ERC tax code is over 200 pages) and time investment necessary to understand the ERC program, very few are able to effectively maximize this sizeable credit for your business. It was only after seeing the process benefit his own two franchise businesses that Grant decided to make this a cornerstone effort of his own, through DeltaERC, to help other business owners like him find the same releif.

To contact Grant personally, email him at grant@deltaerc.comTo learn more information about DeltaERC, visit https://deltaerc.com/

As the daughter of a minister and kin to a lot of church folk Nikki grew up listening to traditional gospel/christian music and spent much of her grade school days involved in school band playing clarinet and oboe. But, despite her early exposure to music, it wasn’t until the tender age of 28 when she finally began to start making music of her own.

Nikki was born and raised in North Carolina but Chicago is where she found her first home as a performer and songwriter. Starting out in the open mic scene it didn’t take long for her to garner local support and make her way to some great stages around the midwest: opening for acts such as Jaime Wyatt, Caroline Spence, Boo Ray, and Sean Watkins.

She is a former winner of the awarded Uncommon Ground Songwriting competition; she has been voted as a ‘Judge’s Pick’ in the Nashville Rising Song contest, and recently had her single Love.Save.Me make it to the semi-final round of the International Songwriting Competition.

Nikki finds a way to combine captivating melodies and insightful lyrics with a voice full of raw passion.  Her music is unapologetic in it efforts to grapple with real life; and yet elegantly embodies the essence of her “Carolina Soul”.

From "Wilkesboro: Find Your Backroad" Program. (Air Date: 2-12-22; Host: Matt Mittan)

Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith shared his vision for the future of North Wilkesboro Speedway during the Wilkes County Chamber of Commerce 75th Membership Celebration recently.

Earmarked within the North Carolina state budget that was passed in November was $18 million toward infrastructure improvements at the historic 0.625-mile facility. That money, Smith said, will go a long way toward modernizing the iconic venue to bring motorsports, concerts and other entertainment options to the Wilkes County region.

“The future of North Wilkesboro Speedway is bright,” Smith told a group of 250 people gathered for the event. “There is a great opportunity to revive this fantastic venue to be, not just a race track, but a place that can host lots of events, a place that people will come to from far away and enjoy the community, enjoy the region and enjoy special events.”

Thanks to the efforts of local volunteer groups, cleanup around the 75-year-old race track began several months ago and attention can now turn to prioritizing the necessary upgrades and refurbishment projects to reopen North Wilkesboro Speedway. Smith highlighted his vision for the property through a series of renderings that showcased not only a return to racing, but also alternative uses like serving as a concert venue.

In this episode of the show, we sit down to talk with Terri Parsons, wife of late NASCAR legend and Hall of Fame inductee Benny Parsons.
