We ask parents the questions that help them raise young and successful musicians. We respect our children enough to provide well thought-out reasons for why we play or sing.
A bit offbeat for my podcast, but I thought you would enjoy.
This is an old archived interview I got to have with Ryan Young, the fiddler for Trampled by Turtles and Dead Man Winter.
Learn how Ryan got his start (it's not run-of-the-mill), what motivates him, what inspires him, and learn overall tips from a seasoned performing and session violinist!
As of time of this interview (2017)... TBT (https://merch.ambientinks.com/collections/trampledbyturtles) has released eight full albums, three of which have reached US Billboard chart number one spots. Their fifth release, Palomino, maintained a position in the Top 10 on the bluegrass charts for 52 straight weeks. Their latest album, Wild Animals, was released on July 15, 2014. They have played internationally and at many popular music festivals in the US, and as of July 29, 2015, they will have played live in every state except Hawaii. Ryan also contributes to Dead Man Winter… http://deadmanwinter.tumblr.com/tour and The Fiddle Heirs… https://www.facebook.com/FiddleHeirs/]

When you hide the instrument, many magical things can happen. I've seen my kids get to the point where they stop doing other things and practice, impromptu. Jam sessions with neighbors start happening. Recordings. Showing off. All of this because of one simple trick. Learn about it today.

Choosing an instrument for your child is never a one-and-done decision, but it is a difficult one to make.
Should you have a child join a band or orchestra? Play country or jazz?
Folk or Metal? Zydeco or Hip-Hop?
Choosing your child's instrument is a monumental decision, and it paves the road for future learning.
This episode talks about the framework I would use if I could start all over again.
Here are the top 3 instruments (and bottom 1 instrument) in my personal list.

Episode #19 is about the week your child will never forget... for one reason or another.
When your child goes to a special place to learn music and make friends, it leaves a lasting impression.
So, should you send your child away to summer camp? I hope to help you feel better about making your decision.

Episode #18 is about a question you should ask yourself.
You probably do not know this question yet, but it is possible I was living in a cave. When I finally asked myself this question when I was in my early 40's, it was as if the clouds parted, an angel appeared, and Handel's Oratorio Messiah started to play in full orchestral glory.

In 30 years of teaching music, there are three categories of students:
Those who fail and drop the instrument within 1-3 years
Those who stick with the instrument for years but do not learn quickly
Those who go on to being very, very successful by most people's standards
What is the difference between 1, 2, and 3?
You might be surprised: what separates each of those categories is NOT the presence of parents, but the "type" of parents they have.
In today's podcast I tell you what I've found, and how you can become a parent instantly of a "type 3" student.

Have you ever wanted your child to learn music without wasting time?
Does your child's practice time sound like a cacophony of chaos and "already played that"?
Do you wonder if maybe your child is not learning quickly enough?
If your child is not getting excited with every practice session, that probably means your child is not learning music and enjoying the reward of joy that happens when progress is made.
The Agile Practice Method© was created to help solve this in 2018. I will dive into this method and its chart today.
Part 1 of 2.
If you want the chart, email me at brooks.hanes@icanplayviolin.com with the subject line, "practice".

Today we will dive into a practice-performance model, with a very practical way to involve your child in some philosophical engineering.
Nothing helps a child move forward more quickly than performances, but nothing stalls a child's growth in music more than a nervous, anxious mindset.
How can we perform without overwhelming anxiety? I take time to suggest one way that might work for you, and has worked for me.

No one believes creativity is absolutely horrible.
But when it alone is used to interpret music on a sheet of paper, it can be embarrassing.
Today's episode takes the "L" in of my PEARLS system and uses it to remind us to never assume we know how to perform a work of music, until we do something very important - although not always very obvious.

Change is inevitable; our kids know this, and sometimes just hanging onto what is normal is very important to them.
The change that happens in that case? Your child becomes hardened on the outside, developing a crisp shell against critique. Discouragement follows. Depression and the thought of "giving up on the instrument" may come quickly.
Today's episode grabs the "R" of my PEARLS system and encourages us to get our children to take a step forward with the critique received from themselves, you the parent, or others.

Sometimes we want to give criticism and fix our children. This leads to bad things. In today's world of "helicopter" parenting and even "free range" parenting, there is a balance in-between which leads to growth. Discover the "A" in PEARLS in this episode.

In this episode, I discuss the ways that some families try violin.
This attitude of "trying" is a virus that infects the attitude and has a profound yet latent effect on the family.

If something in this episode rang true, will you let me know? Or send me a question for me to discuss:

In this episode, Alexander Strachan teaches us his sources of strength in several areas:
• staying pumped for music (literally, to avoid injury)
• getting to help others with violin (and how its precedence helps him too)
• watching a certain genre of movies (you will be surprised)
• helping others enjoy their last days (while making life-long friends with clients)
• keeping going as a young child and a man (when everyone expects you to play a different instrument and genre of music!)
Nobody else has done the same eclectic mix of activities and also mixed them together into a magnificent, glorious service to others, the way Alexander has.
This episode will leave you wanting to hear more about his talent and strategies, and we hope to have him on the show again soon.
