"That's where we get terms like life balance, where it's supposed to be balanced in terms of the measurement of time. That's just not the natural way of things. It's the machine-like way of things. Most of us know when we are not doing well. However, we struggle to define what it would mean for us to feel better. We can’t identify the barriers to happiness, and sometimes we can’t even describe what that happiness would look like. Our culture promotes happiness despite it being a deeply individual thing. As career-achieving women, we often wait to care about ourselves until we are caught up or have more free time. But it is important to find time to invest in ourselves and incorporate those moments into our busy lives.

In this week’s episode, we will listen to Dr. Victoria Dalton — a psychologist and Rebecca’s therapist — as she tells us about the barriers to feeling better. She talks about the philosophies behind internal and external forces, and why some people rewrite the history of their successes and failures. Dr. Victoria Dalton also discusses how to give yourself permission to enjoy the moments you work toward instead of looking for what’s next. In her conversation with Rebecca, she emphasizes the importance of tackling the world with a mindset that you can handle it and reminding yourself that you are not alone. She also emphasizes why you should create meaningful, workable goals that can help you track your progress.

Listen in to learn more about what barriers you might be facing, ways to change your mindset, and how you can define happiness for yourself.

Many of us want to feel better, but don’t know where to start. We have to define how we are feeling and set personal goals are in order to make any progress. To feel better, we often have to adapt our behaviors and patterns and connect with other meaningful people in our lives. We even have to step outside ourselves and empathize with other people around us. In the end, the most important part of this process is keeping a positive mindset, so that we can problem-solve and plan rather than catastrophize.

In this week’s episode, we talk to Dr. Victoria Dalton again about how we can start to feel better. She talks about why humans repeat behaviors, and how we can adapt those same patterns and behaviors. Dr. Victoria Dalton also discusses how to change your mindset, and understand that you can’t always change other people. In her conversation with Rebecca, she emphasizes the importance of not allowing negative interactions to internally influence you and your experiences. She also discusses how and why you should evaluate which patterns and behaviors serve a purpose in your life and which ones are inefficient. She even explains how you can learn from your mistakes and focus on them in a nonjudgemental way.

Listen in to learn more about how to set goals for yourself, adapt your behaviors and patterns, and connect with meaningful people in your life to feel better.

The world needs us to boldly be ourselves. Oftentimes, we don't have the confidence to believe in ourselves and our talents. We listen to other people’s opinions of our lives before we listen to our own opinions, our own intuition, and our own ideas. To own our uniqueness, we must be courageous and confident. Once we shed the expectations others have set for us, we allow ourselves to be ourselves, and we find our meaning and purpose.

In this week’s episode, we will listen to Lindsay Tjepkema — CEO and founder of Casted — as she tells us the story of how she literally and figuratively found her voice. In her talk, Lindsay talks about being “too much” of everything and” not enough” of anything. She shares her journey of self-confidence, and how she had the courage to own her uniqueness.

Throughout her life, Lindsay has been listening to people tell her that she wasn't who they thought I should be. Over the years, she was told that she was too tall, too small, too loud, too quiet, too much, not enough, too young, and "too" everything. After years of putting her value in what other people said, she finally found her voice in podcasting. The podcast she started as a VP at a global SAS company led her to start a company of her own: Casted, the first and only marketing platform built around podcasts. Our unique essence in this world is our true superpower. Our unique skills, talents, abilities, experiences, and even struggles all encompass our story. We are writing our story each day chapter by chapter. We need to intentionally write the story that we want to live because no two of us are the same. Each of us is unique. Each of us is different.

In this week’s episode, we will listen to Denisa Lambert — Vice President of Regulatory and Compliance with TRIMEDX — as she tells us a story of differences, struggles, love, and ultimately, empathy and unity. In her talk, Denisa was vulnerable and courageous. She decided to share a story that she has been hiding behind for 14 years.

Throughout her adult life, Denisa has contemplated what is normal. Her life and family have been anything but normal for the past 14 years. Unexpectedly, Denisa met her best friend and the love of her life at work — Susan. Unfortunately, their company didn't embrace them as a couple and within a year they both lost their job. Throughout their life together, Denisa and Susan have faced some major challenges and some wonderful joys. It is not at all what they expected, but they figured out how to make it work, and couldn’t imagine it any other way. They now have a house of six children, and in Denisa’s words, “it’s always going to be complicated, but we're not the ordinary family. And I think that's what keeps us going. This ordinary family is extraordinary together.”

When Denisa came to Rise and Thrive, she never thought she would tell the women — let alone the crowd — about her story. But they brought out the most vulnerable moments in her and inspired her to share her journey. After 14 years, Denisa decided to stand up and be courageous, so that she can empower others to not try to be normal.

I met Kerry Rossow in 2014 when we did a Listen to Your Mother show in Indianapolis.  We had written orginal pieces and been chosen to read them in a beautiful theater to a loving crowd on Mother's Day weekend.

How amazing that I'm not hosting my own Stand Tall in Your Story show on March 5th in a beautiful theater for the women of Rise and Thrive Indianapolis to share their stories.

AND, Kerry went on to found a show,The She Said Project.  Some of us are just meant to write and tell our stories.  Kerry and I are sisters in stories.

The day I met her I wanted her to be my sister or my neighbor or somehow in my life!

You'll love this one, try not to spit out your coffee, she's a funny one!

Jenny Tod has two businesses and a rich life outside of work as a wife and mom to a toddler.... and she's thriving.

Jenny is a marketer, designer doing brand and marketing work with Jenny Tod Creative. She also is a co-founder of a coffee shop, Indie Coffee Roasters located in Carmel, Indiana.

Oh, and she's a wife and mom to a toddler!

She chose a life that caterers to her unique gifts and talents and allows the margin she needs to invest in personal pursuits and relationships.

Jenny is a great example of living life "intentionally". This is thriving! She's building a story and a life holistically.

"There's a big difference in falling in bed at night exhausted from striving versus falling into bed exhausted from thriving. "

Rebecca Fleetwood Hession

Jenny has worked for agencies and other businesses and learned so much about herself and her craft.

Key Takeaway: She didn't have to do it all as a business owner, she could bring on people that complimented her gifts and talents. She knows what she's good at and what others need to do for the business to be successful. Even outsourcing cleaning her house allows her to be a better mom and business owner!

Key Takeaway: Don't rob someone else the joy of helping! This is how we bless each other! Learn to accept help as a gift not a weakness.

Key Takeaway: Self Care isn't just a buzz word, it's critical to our ability to perform in all the roles of our lives.

Key Takeaway: Showcasing our passions and our work for our kids is important.

We're learning more about the NEED we have for art and music in our lives.  Our brains are wired to need the engagement that art and music provide.  Art is healing and inspiring.

We are not machines, yet much of our work talks and treats us as such.  Our human brains have nuance.  We are each unique and need the nuance that art and music provides.

Brandee is a storyteller.

She tells the stories of her clients, they wear them for a lifetime.

Brandee Gordon founder of Native Ink Tattoo, knew from the time that she could hold a pencil that art was her thing.  By high school she knew this would be her career.  The jump from a love of art to a thriving tattoo business took:

  • Intention
  • Strong Character and Values
  • Courage
  • Connection to her clients and their stories

Fun Fact:

At 17 years old Brandee courageously called Tommy's Tattoo shop in a neighboring town and said, "I don't have any tattoos but I'd like you to teach me the tattoo business." After seeing her portfolio he said yes.  In the late 90's there weren't a lot of female tattoo artists!

How often we over complicate using our gifts and talents!

Brandee was so impacted by the story of the Dunham family, she'd like to dedicate this episode to the Grayson Dunham Foundation, a heartbreaking story that we need to share.

If I had a soapbox, one of the things I'd shout about is context. Do you know how to weave together the circumstances based on the setting. That's context. The word context means to weave together.

con: together
texure: to weave

Ali Cudby is a master weaver, she understands the need for context. She's woven together an interesting life full of experiences while refining her gifts and talents and where they best fit.

Ali recently learned more about context after moving to Indianapolis, IN; a location that was not on her radar or her master plan. After stints in Hollywood film, working for the New York Times, a hard earned degree from Ivy League Wharton School of Business, and a life changing bra experience turned business and best selling book, Ali found herself in the middle of the United States learning a new language. The language of the Midwest; "are you one of us".

The Midwest culture values relationships, family. longevity and generations of trust. Ali with all of her gifts and talents and experience, was the new girl. A new girl in a beautiful city surrounded by incredibility nice people. She learned to speak the language, the language of kindness, trust and becoming one of the "us".

We should always stand tall in our story, know our gifts and talents, value them, and learn how they fit contextually. Because Ali is a master weaver, she quickly learned that an Ivy League resume and New York Times bio was more about being an "outsider" than a stand out top candidate in the Monument Circles of Indianapolis. Pardon the local pun and joke about our city center literally called Monument Circle.

Instead of hiding behind her resume and seeking her business elsewhere as a consultant who can work anywhere in the U.S. she became one of us, she looked for connections. She was courageously curious about us Midwesterners and specifically Indy, as we affectionately call our city of Indianapolis. She's building relationships and sharing her story. This is context. When we stand tall in our own story with authenticity and vulnerability, we give others permission to do the same.

Ali has become a friend, I value her courage and her resume. I deeply respect Ali's passion for customer loyalty and customer experience. She's mastered her craft and knows the spaces she fits best to help business owners here in Indianapolis and around the country. If you're a "people first" leader running a small to mid size business ($5M to $20M) looking to capitalize on the value of keeping your customers loyal and engaged, schedule a chat with Ali. After all, you spent a lot of time and money getting those customers, doesn't it just make sense to keep them around for generations, sounds like a Midwest thing to do.

She loves coffee and customers and is happy to meet you in a local shop. She knows the owners and the patrons of her favorite places, as the locals do.

Find Ali and her business Your Iconic Brand here. Check out her LinkedIn profile. Ali is passionate about helping you keep your customers. #CustomerLoyalty

Today learn about SOUL FOOD and how to get you some!

Newflash: It's not something that comes naturally to us high achieving women.

Jen Petro, the owner of Dropleaf.co, a marketing company working with companies that have a passion driven mission.

She shares her yearly practice of taking a personal retreat to reflect, strategize and rest, now that’s soul food! Jen swears by this practice and would no way give it up as a part of her yearly strategy planning for work and life.

Disconnecting is counter-intuitive to how high achieving women typically operate. We "white knuckle it" through things and applaud ourselves that we're sticking with it, when we're often making things worse.

What we need is a break, not as a luxury, as a necessity.

Self Care Rant around 8 minute mark! Jen and I hate on bath bombs and rose'.

The intent of a personal retreat is rest and rejuvenation, what self care was supposed to mean.

Being with yourself long enough to study your thoughts, to study your current behaviors and ask yourself what needs to change? What do I need to be a better version of myself.

This does not have to be expensive! Jen has great trips to meet every situation!

FREE PERSONAL RETREAT DOWNLOAD!!!! WHAT!!! It’s so good she should have charged for it! - Hit this link and scroll to the bottom of the page, it's beautiful!

As high achieving women, we don't use our strategic powers to ask “what do I need right now?”

To turn all of our special powers inward.

Gift From the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

Charles Lindbergh’s wife would go to a little cottage on the beach by herself for months. Women need solitude to find the true essence of who they are and get to the core of who they are.

We have trapped ourselves by thinking we are the center our universe. However, we do not control our universe. In fact, that perspective is hurtful not only to ourselves but to others. When we don't let the others in our lives step up and use all of their gifts and talents, we've robbed them.

Jen - “I didn't realize how wound I was and how on edge”

We need this to remind ourselves, we're far more BADASS than we give ourselves credit for.

“I think so many of us have lost her way or maybe we never really knew who we were.”

You don’t always need dramatic changes, sometimes you need a quiet space to reflect on how you feel about your current life to gain appreciation and perspective.

Dr Caroline Leaf - Think, Learn, Succeed

REQUEST: If you decide to take a retreat based on this episode, Give me a shout and let me have you on as a guest to talk about your experience!

Reflection Questions:

  1. When is the last time you were just quiet and honest with yourself about what you need?

  2. What is holding you back from taking that kind of time? .

Ava Wettrick, host of Mentorz podcast and high school senior cares about her peers. She's bringing amazing thought leaders to her Generation Z peers to inspire them to think bigger. She's also bringing groups of young women together for much needed connection and challenging discussion about deeper meaning and purpose than high school typically provides.

"There's a difference between childish-ness and childlike-ness. Child-likeness is about the wonder and love in your eyes." Ava Wettrick - host of Mentorz podcast.

"I vote we let our teens live in child like wonder just a little longer. High school shouldn't be where their dreams go to die." Rebecca Fleetwood Hession The suicide rate for teens between 10 and 17 was up 70% between 2006 and 2016, the latest data analysis available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It's clearly documented that lack of connection and lack of meaning and purpose is a significant contributor to depression. Couple this challenge with the high achievement mindset driving through education today and we have a crisis.

Before you jump on the bandwagon of iPhones are the villian, that seems like an easy target to shift the blame. Are we really listening to our teens? Do they have a voice? Do we aspire to a strong sense of love and belonging or just a high GPA?

And what about the kids that aren't on the college track? What about the artist and the creative? Where is their sense of meaning and purpose and belonging?

Are you living this one? This lie we tell ourselves, when I get caught up I’m gonna _________. Then fill in the blank with that thing you really want to do, the thing you can’t stop thinking about. It’s all a lie because you’re never getting caught up. Ever.

So now what? Are you just going to let that dream of yours die until you get your inbox to zero? Or after you prep for the quarterly meeting. By the way, the quarterly meeting happens again …. in 3 months. The continuous cycle of demands and busy that may be drowning your dreams and your spirit.

Lindsey Hein from I’ll Have Another podcast on the current episode of The Badass Womens Council podcast shares her story. With 4 boys under the age of 6, Lindsey could have easily lived that lie and most would have considered it a legitimate excuse not to live her dreams. Yet she researches and finds top name guests, interviews those guests, and publishes an episode every week while supporting a highly engaged audience and speaking appearances. Let this inspire you, you can do it too!

LINDSEY SHARES THESE TIPS. 1. Announce It, Then Figure it Out – There’s accountability in sharing your dream. 2. Start Messy – The need to be “right” or perfect stops too many talented badasses from bringing their gifts to the world. 3. Listen to Your Inner Badass – The thing you can’t stop thinking about is probably the gift and dream that God planted in you from your beginning, stop shushing it. 4. Baby Steps are Still Steps – You don’t need to quit everything and go to school to learn every detail. Sit down at home in your PJ’s and craft a plan, then start searching for information to take one step. Repeat. 5. Your Story and your Struggle Inspires Others – By sharing her fears and the discovery of testing positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation, Lindsey landed a spot on the cover of Women’s Running Magazine from nearly 2000 applicants. That courageous act has opened doors and helped her inspire and engage her audience. 6. You CAN Change – Lindsey knows that she’s prone to fear. By knowing that about herself she can mindfully recognize and intentionally shift those tendencies to more positive outcomes.

Listen to this episode and be inspired to live a messy imperfect life while taking baby steps to your dream. Then jump over to listen to Lindsey’s podcast, I’ll Have Another. Don’t miss the Instagram stories of the real life of Lindsey Hein and her messy and beautiful crew!

She's back! Dr. Vickie Dalton is here to talk about relationships!

As strong women, we’re willing to work really hard to make things turn out well. We want our relationships to go well too.

Newflash:
You can’t control others people’s behaviors.

I know I know, we believe things could be soooooo much better if we could just tell people what to do!
Nope. (I know, I know #superhard)

So what CAN we do?

10 Things ....

This applies to friendships, colleagues, & significant others.

  1. Take Responsibility and Accountability for our OWN behaviors.
  2. Choose to work on your relationships. Great relationships don’t happen by accident. They take INTENTION.
  3. Conflict will happen. You don’t have to agree on everything.
  4. After a fight, go back and work through it, even when it is uncomfortable. This is how we learn how to have great relationships.
  5. Assumptions are dangerous! You’re wrong half of the time about the context and background of an argument, even when you have a great relationship.
  6. Our kids are learning to communicate and how to do relationships from us. Don’t hide the struggle, learn and show them how to work through them.
  7. ASK FOR WHAT YOU NEED! Without guilt.
  8. There is no perfect. NOBODY HAS a perfect life. I REPEAT ….N O B O D Y has a PERFECT life.
  9. There are 3 steps to a great apology, stay until the end to learn those!
  10. We're all fabulously imperfect. Own that, learn and work through things together.
