Climate change is an ongoing subject of concern and while many businesses are well on the road to making their businesses more sustainable there are many others who have put off the necessary changes that have to be made to decrease their carbon footprints. Gillian Peters, Chief Executive of Pragmatica spoke with John about how her organisation works with businesses large and small to devise and implement strategies and prepare for a future where becoming climate friendly won’t be just a choice for business but will also be something which they will have to do to comply with a range of statutory requirements which are coming down the track.

This week, John Purcell presented The Bottom Line live from Arboretum in Leighlinbridge, Carlow for a special programme at the launch of well known local entrepreneur Rachel Doyle’s book - “My Tree of Life”.

Kilkenny Business Awards 2020 was an awards event with a difference. Usually a black tie gala event, full of fun, excitement and anticipation, was by necessity curtailed.
However, the Chamber of Commerce were determined to continue their November tradition and so, on Wednesday, on KCLR Live and simultaneously in the Kilkenny People Newspaper we brought you the news of two significant awards that despite everything had been awarded.

Running in the dark and using a headlight that just wasn't doing the job lead to Padraic George a qualified electrical engineer to develop the Bodylite Night Runner. Padraic set about designing a prototype which would be dual purpose, firstly with road safety in mind to ensure he would be visible to oncoming traffic and secondly so that he could see where he was running and with input from Design+ in the Institute of Technology Carlow the "Bodylite Night Runner" was developed.
Stryve are a private Cloud company based in Carlow which offers bespoke private cloud solutions and Fortune 500-grade cybersecurity for SMEs and multinationals, Andrew Tobin CEO at Stryve joined John to talk about the work they do and their plans for expansion with the recent announcement of ten new jobs, seven of which will be based locally.

The Temporary Covid-19 Wage Subsidy Scheme was announced on 24th March 2020 as one of the measures to provide financial support to workers affected by the Covid-19 crisis. The subsidy scheme commenced from 26th March 2020 and supersedes the Employer Covid Refund Scheme. The scheme is expected to last a period of 12 weeks. During the week the Minister of Finance announced further changes to the scheme.

Welcome to the first edition of The Bottom Line on KCLR for 2020!
In the run up to Christmas on The Bottom Line on KCLR we spoke to a number of people involved in #careerskilkenny, the event was designed to bring together people at Christmas who may be living away from home and who are interested in a job in Kilkenny. The event took place on December 28th in the Medieval Mile Museum in Kilkenny and over 1000 people came along to meet the over 20 leading local companies that were taking part.
To get first-hand feedback from one of the companies involved, John Purcell spoke with Padraic Tracey, HR Specialist with the Asgard Group about their experience at #careerskilkenny as well as to provide us with further insight into what the Asgard Group does.
Starting into the New Year many people in business turn to the challenges for the year ahead, with that in mind, John spoke with Wexford based business consultant Blaise Brosnan who works with many successful companies in Carlow & Kilkenny and who is credited with making a real difference to the lives of many entrepreneurs in terms of assisting clarity of purpose, focus and progress.
Climate change continues to be topical and is an area where businesses are constantly evolving to become more environmentally friendly and operate in a sustainable way. This week John spoke with Michael Connolly of local business Connolly’s Supervalu in Bagenalstown who are investing in a series of store energy upgrades all as part of their efforts to reduce harmful impacts on the environment.

In 1936 a book called “How to Win Friends and Influence People” was published and quickly became a sensation being reprinted 17 times in its first year. The book was by a man called Dale Carnegie and his book is ranked by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential books of all time.
Walter speaks to John about the history and the principles behind Dale Carnegie approach as well as the work that he does with businesses and what the Dale Carnegie Training can offer.
Earlier in the week John was in attendance at the Bank Of Ireland Enterprise Town Awards that took place in Lyrath. During the week Entegro a Kilkenny based company announced the opening of a new fibre network design centre of excellence in the city and announced another 50 new jobs for Kilkenny. We spoke with Jim Doyle, Managing Director of Entegro on the jobs announcement as well as how he got started in the business.
EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan was at the launch of the new Entegro Fibre Network Centre of Excellence in Danville Business Park during the week and John Purcell spoke with him about the importance of broadband for the economic development of the region, his appointment as EU Trade Commissioner, and Brexit.
