The Newstrength Way is a podcast created to empower people to pursue the strongest version of themselves through movement, learning and connection.
Join host Jacob Hodson and guests as they share their experiences, insights and strategies to living a stronger life
A few months ago I was shared a story of the curveball thrown to a young man Conner Alexander.
From nearly dying in a car accident that took the life of one of his best friends, to being told he was unlikely to walk again. When I learnt of his story he was back walking, paddling around on a stand up paddleboard and defying all odds. I reached out to this incredible young man to try and learn more about his story and help share it with the world.
What I learnt in this interview was not only has Conner defied all the odds to be here right now but he truly defines the word resilience. Make sure to listen in and learn from his incredible story
After a short pause, the podcast is back!
We went through a very quick turn around into a new gym but we're back up and running in our new home. This episode Nath and I caught up to talk about what we feel COVID taught us about the fitness industry and the future we see ahead for the microgym scene.
The Newstrength Way just hit Episode 100. Thankyou all for listening and your feedback throughout our first 100 episodes.
Today we welcome Max Bristow to the podcast to share his story, Max has been lifting since back in the 1950's and has had a wealth of experience in multiple disciplines including powerlifting, weightlifting and bodybuilding.
At 76 years old Max has also influenced many of the great lifters to have come out of the hunter region and is very well respected for the hard work he has put into the growth of strength sports in this country.
Max was kind enough to welcome me into his home gym to share his story and as a fanatic of strength culture it was an absolute honour to get to meet and talk with a man with his experience.
This week we welcome to the podcast Mell Green, Mell has won the Australian Powerlifting Union National title along with breaking the deadlift record in both Powerlifting and Strongman in her weight class.
We talk about her story of finding lifting only a relatively short time ago into falling in love with it and the people in the sport.
If you could get in shape in 12 weeks but put the weight back on afterwards or do it in 12 months and never have to do it again which would you choose?
Depending on these, your going to choose different diets, different training, different lifestyles.
These choices are all fine as long as you know what those choices feed...
If you want to keep the weight off then choosing fad diets and hours of cardio probably isn't the right choice
But if you only care about the photo at the end of the diet then thats cool too.
This week we welcome Nerida Bint, owner of Lissome Newcastle's first Women's Only Strength and Fitness Facility. We talk with Nerida about her story of how she lost 20kg, left her old job to pursue personal training where she went on to run women's only bootcamps that over time became Lissome. We talk about the importance of inclusiveness and how Nerida focuses on crafting community within her gym.
Don't think you have the time to improve your health and fitness?

Keep finding yourself looking for the missing link in your nutrition, training or life?
Thinking someone is holding the secret as to why you're not where you want to be?
The secret is in Self Leadership..
Not waiting for others to give you something to follow, making a commitment to yourself and taking action daily towards those goals.
This is a bit of a special episode. Last week we had Jess (my fiance) come in and present for our clients a masterclass session focused on Emotional Wellness.
We do these every week for our clients covering a range of topics and get in experts like Jess to teach their specialties and let our clients ask questions first hand. This one in particular got some amazing feedback from those who jumped on or watched the recording so we decided to share it on the podcast
If you're serious about reaching your goals you have to never miss a monday.
Here's why

After being separated to social isolation thanks to COVID we got the Newstrength Crew back together to do a podcast episode answering listener questions over zoom.
The range spreads from our favourite and most hated exercises, to combating motivation struggles, Thor's upcoming 501kg deadlift world record attempt, to olympic / COVID conspiracies and possibly our favourite question yet..
Would you rather fight 1 horse sized duck or 100 duck sized horses.
Listen in for a fun laid back podcast with the crew to get you through your social isolation
When it comes to fat loss we all know that it comes down to energy intake vs. expenditure...
When we dive a little deeper into expenditure we get a few pieces of the pie that we can influence.
One of the biggest limiting factors we see holding people back is choosing training based purely on what burns the most calories in the session rather than what will facilitate larger over energy expenditure in the long term
This week on the podcast we welcome Raissa Vogler, strength coach and one of Australia's top strongwoman competitors.
We talk Rai's journey into the sport, her advice to women considering trying out strongwoman or other strength sports along with what she's taken from being surrounded by some of the world's best strength athletes and coaches in her time.

Don't let the lockdown get in the way of your goals..
We share 9 strategies to get great results with minimal equipment or load.
This week we welcome back to the show nutrition expert Elin Granstrand to help you navigate how to manage your nutrition and health while living, working and training from home in the lockdown happening across aus right now.
With everything going on to do with Corona Virus right now theres a lot of obstacles in getting your training done. We've had the Arnold's expo in Melbourne cancelled with 5 days notice and our competition moved 90 minutes away
Jacob covers how it's important to take these obstacles and find the opportunity within them
This week I cover some of the most common nutrition myths we see people come to us with. This episode was inspired by the great work being done by previous podcast guest Elin Granstrand who is actively working on debunking these myths with her content regularly
Most people getting started into strength training get stuck in the 5-day bodybuilding split and hold themselves back from getting results
Often they haven't built the discipline to turn up 5 days per week and skip out on a day or two every week plus they aren't yet strong enough to need a full week to recover a body part
We promote beginners to focus on hitting full body sessions focusing on a main lift and then hitting assistance and accessory work to round out the session
This week on the podcast we welcome long time friend of ours and physiotherapist Connor Gleadhill.
Connor has worked in the clinical setting and in assisting rehabilitation to performance in the law enforcement setting and now works is on the path to changing how we understand and treat pain.
Connor and the Future Health Network team are currently holding workshops around Australia to help health and fitness professionals better communicate and work around pain
Apologies for the late episode this week guys...
Recording day was interrupted by the birth of our beautiful little girl Millie a few days early. So today's podcast was inspired by Millie's last minute arrival before we were to be transferred to the John.

Progress isn't always tangible.. You can't always put a number on it. That's why we need to focus on creating opportunities to see our momentum as we create it and start to fall in love with the process.

Pressure can take you to a whole other level if you let it...
Jacob talks why you should apply pressure and urgency to your health goals
On the back end of hosting our first Strongman and Strongwoman Contest over the weekend.
We had nearly all our athletes outperform their training on every event and rise to the occasion to give their best on competition day.
Jacob discusses the key to allowing you to rise to the occasion starting with how to approach your training along with making the right decisions outside of your training to get the most out of your performance on the day...
Accountability isn't just for people who are struggling to stay on track..
Even the most successful people use others to be accountable to as a means of driving their success and bringing up the urgency and necessity of projects.
Today I share where having mentors to keep me accountable have helped me achieve success in setting up the business and in my own training, not to mention with the clients we have worked with.
Today we welcome Kate Robinson one of our clients here at Newstrength onto the show. Kate recently shared her journey to the rest of the Newstrength Tribe through our private facebook group.
It was something that touched our team knowing that we've been able to have the impact on someones life the way we try to everyday.
She shares her journey getting into training with us. Her change of mindset and beliefs over the last year and some tips that have made the biggest difference for her.
I spent way too many hours playing pokemon as a kid on my gameboy so when NS client Sam tagged me in a post on facebook about pokemon and challenged me to do a podcast about it I knew it was too much fun to miss out on.
Even though this sounds like a gee up of an episode there's actually some great parallels between achieving success in the pokemon games and success in life.
The boys sat down to reflect on the last few years in business going into how they met, building their friendship and coming to starting NS.
Then they go onto the lessons they've learnt and what's to come here at Newstrength in the future.
Want to lose body fat but feel like you get stuck with all the information out there?
The focus needs to be on consistently taking action on only a few key steps.
Today I focus on the 4 simple things that when you do well will always lead you to getting great fat loss results!
Today we sat down with Newstrength Client, Central Coast Rooster's U16 Strength and Conditioning Coach and Newcastle's Strongest Winger Mat Craig.
Mat and I met years ago back working for the same company, our relationship hit off through our mutual love of footy and work ethic in training. Since then Mat and I have remained good friends and we've had the pleasure of working together to get him even more powerful than he already is.
I had a tonne of fun talking with Mat about his journey.
Most people don't know where to start with their training. They fall into the trap of having to do bodypart splits because thats what the muscle magazines and the majority of people in globo gyms are following...
But for new lifters there's many better ways to simply maximise the results they're after.
Jacob takes us through the basis of a simple, effective program for new lifters.
After watching Westside Vs. The World it made me rethink the things that led to their success.
A big part of their lifters success came down to attitude and simply identifying their weaknesses and doubling down on what they need to do to achieve success...
Are you spending all your time on your strengths and no time on your weaknesses?
Annaliese returns and sits down with Jacob to discuss her recent strongwoman contest, dealing with competition nerves, coaching and her accidental celebrity status of BEVFIT to the Newstrength Tribe.
How well do you stick to your word?
We all have a problem with others not keeping their word with us... yet we often have no problem with breaking our words to ourselves.
Lets imagine this situation happened to you...
Your working the job you love with great people, a big vision for the future but the business isn't going to well..
You're boss comes to you and asks you to take on more work, to really push yourself but the catch.. you have to take a pay cut.
Would you do it?
Listen in to this story of a friend of Jacob's and theirs an important lesson in the end...
What could you do this year that is so impactful that it changes the course of your life for the next year?
Jacob shares an idea he learnt a few years ago that has held true and helped guide him towards growth through his past few years from Triathlons to becoming a NSW Strongman Champion and recently competing Crossfit.
Get comfortable being uncomfortable to accelerate your personal growth
Today I sat down and interviewed one another one of our clients here at Newstrength Nic Ashford..
The very special part of this is we are excited to announce that Nic is joining our team as the newest coach.
We spoke about Nic's youth and exercise, his growth through training starting in his garage to joining NS and what he's found has helped him most.
We loved it and we hope you do too.
Everyone loves saying you get out what you put in but.. If you do the right things in your training you actually get out more than what you put in It gives you the results you want, while helping build your confidence, your belief of possibility for yourself Not just leaving you drained, tired and burning a few extra calories
Sometimes what you want to do and what you need to do are the same thing..
That's what most people call the perfect situation
Other times what you want and what you need are two very different things
This leads us to a bad spot..
Of course we want to do what we want, what's fun and exciting.
But that's not always going to lead us to our goals...
Sometimes we need to do the things that are necessary over the things that are fun to get us moving in the right direction
Certain qualities help us through challenges in our journey to success in our fitness, strength, business and careers or all round in life.
Bravery and Commitment are certainly two of those qualities.
We can all get caught waiting for the right time to take action...
It's something I'm way more familiar with than I'm proud of
But I've learnt the only time this changes is when you just start taking action, without worrying about the whether it's the right time or not.
Because the right time only ever feels that way once you've started or once you can look back on it.
Today we have special guest and Newstrength Client Grace Parker..
Grace has had an incredible transformation from never lifting before to Deadlifting 150kg a feat many men would be proud of, and recently after this interview was recorded competed in her first Strongwoman Competition.
We talk about Grace's background with sports and exercise, how training has changed her and why she believes more women should embrace their strength.
Your Kindergarten maths teacher tricked you...
Sure by numbers addition is simple.. but in life the numbers don't quite add up
Often things we do have a greater flow on effect and achieve more as a whole than what the sum of the parts would.
We look at how these pieces can influence the results in your training
It's easy to get caught trying to find out all the details before starting..
But often starting is what teaches us most of the information
I used to have a lot of trouble with this too, researching all the information I could find before trying something..
But what it lead me too was putting it off and not getting to where I wanted to be
Until a mentor of mine taught us to focus on speed of implementation, trial things and figure it out on the fly...
Today's is a very special episode. Jacob sits down with Sam Foran one of our clients at Newstrength and talks about his journey into training.
From embracing the learning culture of NS to deadlifting 200kg as a 78kg guy in under 12 months of training. We speak about how training and competing with his girlfriend Grace keeps him accountable and motivated, where to next with his future goals and what changes he's found in himself since starting at NS.
The fitness industry has been pushing the high intensity train for too long.
We don't believe everyone should be spending all their time on just high intensity training.
Most people we've worked that had come from that background have been able to get better results while not starving themselves of foods and being able to train less.
How?
Using training methods that promote long term results and not just burning calories in the short term.
Not everyone has unlimited hours to train.
Some people have busy jobs, family commitments or even athletes in season where there's other things competing for your time.
But just because there's less time doesn't mean you need to expect to get less results.
Over the years of training and coaching we've found many people to be able to get insane results training just 2-3 days a week as long as they follow the right systems.
The fitness industry wants you to believe routine is the enemy...
But success in all disciplines of life consistently has shown that routine is the recipe to success.
People who get the best results have routines around their food, their training, their sleep. They don't leave it up to chance, they find what works and they spend their time on it.
Jacob discusses the benefits of having routine built into your life in the journey to reach your goals!
What's the next step?
Is this session leading somewhere?
Training, life and business is all about having a good plan and being able to execute on that while being able to change on the fly when you have new information
But what happens when you don't have a plan in place first?
One of the biggest problems we see is coaches not having a plan for their clients past making something hard on the day. That's not good enough if you ask us.
Everyone wants the most bang for their buck right?
When it comes to training whether it be for building muscle, losing body fat or even just getting fitter. Strength training is the foundation to being able to achieve it at the highest level for you.
Sure not everyone needs to be a world record powerlifter but having a solid strength foundation transcends into many other aspects of fitness, something that can't be said about other physical attributes.
Jacob is back for a new format of the Newstrength Way.
We're going to be bringing you 3 episodes a week, starting with some quick motivation and action during the week and then finishing the week with our usual more in depth topics or interview episodes.
Today Jacob talks about embracing the process rather than fixating on your goals.
Intermittent fasting has gained popularity in the past 10 years amongst those seeking fat loss and even more commonly in the entrepeneurial world for its cognitive benefits
But how does it actually work and do you need to do it everyday like many of the promoters push?
Jacob and Nathan share there experiences with Intermittent Fasting, where they believe it works well and how to make it work for you.
We've heard many times how people 'let themselves go' after having a baby.
The lack of sleep combined with having to look after the little one leads to many people choosing the route of convenience rather than the one supporting their own health goals.
Newstrength Owner Nathan is right in the middle of this journey himself now but isn't falling victim to the same troubles many people get stuck with.
Now nearly 10kg down since little Macey Mandeno came into this world he's been training hard even though it doesn't quite look the same as it did before the little one.
We talk about how he balances the baby, training and career. How things have changed in that time and what advice he would give to young parents trying to keep their training up while looking after their kids.
People think every coach or fitness trainer was just born fit and strong. That they've never had troubles training or being motivated.
Today we sat down with one of our coaches Annaliese to get the real truth behind a coach's story.
We talked about what got her into training, how being empowered by her personal trainer Andy led her to becoming a coach herself and how her training has changed over the past 5 years.
How many days a week gets the best results?
Should you do two a days or two sessions a week?
Nathan and Jacob help you find out the answer based on where you are in your training journey right now...
This week we have the pleasure of bringing to you a conversation with two of our good friends Rod and Jeni who run The Movement Collective in Newcastle.
We talk about their journeys into movement training, what they've found most people need the most help with after working with their clients the past 4 years and also Jeni's involvement in the upcoming Stars of Newcastle event raising money for the Cancer Council.
We can be all guilty of thinking we need something special in our training plan or diet...
Thinking that the basics aren't enough to get the results we want.
Nathan and Jacob take us through their experiences with training programs and what they've found works best for themselves and clients
How to train for fat loss would be one of the biggest arguments in the fitness and health industry.
We present our ideas on the hierarchy of fat loss and where you should place your time and energy to get the results you want.
