We often say we desire healing or freedom - but we focus on excuses rather than running to our ultimate healer & giver of life, Jesus. We focus inwardly & often form an identity surrounding our struggle.

We are told in John that Jesus is the vine - we are the branches. Without him, we are nothing.Do we truly desire a life that is free from sin? Or are we so comfortable in our sin that it becomes a part of us?

Do we want to be healed?

I feel like God is calling me in another direction but I’m not sure, how I know this feeling is from the Lord.

  • If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” James 1:5
  • Walking away from your old self is difficult but the Lord will prompt your heart when it’s time to switch gears.
  • Change of perspective. How I view work, relationships, and friends will change based on aligning with Christ.
  • Remember God gives us free will. When we are aligned with Christ he will guide our future.
  • The Lord speaks to us through his word and convicts our hearts & minds. We become sanctified in the word (John 17:17)
  • When we’re in the word we will know God's will because our decisions will align with the Bible. God will never ask us to sin.
  • God gave us the Holy Spirit to help us discern.
  • God will give us peace in the situation. God is a god of order, not chaos.
  • All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” 2 Timothy 3:16

The brevity of life: what is important?

  • There is a hyper-focus on achievement, money, status - worldly things - OVERWHELMING in our culture
  • It is easy to be swept up in the current culture & pressures to conform to the “rat race”, materialism, etc.

  • We are often left asking the question - what truly matters? What is my purpose?

  • Despite the rat race, God has placed eternity on our hearts - we long for something else
  • Ecclesiastes 3:11 “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.”
  • From gotquestions.org: In Ecclesiastes, Solomon lists the various vain pursuits that are equivalent to chasing after the wind:
  • • All things are done “under the sun,” that is, in a human life lived apart from any consideration of God (1:14)
  • • Pursuing wisdom and the understanding of madness and folly (1:16–17)
  • • Rewarding oneself with pleasure (2:10–11)
  • • Seeking immortality (2:16–17)
  • • Thinking one can control the outcome of his life (2:26)
  • • Envious competition with one’s neighbor (4:4)
  • • Trying to make a lasting name for oneself (4:16)
  • “James 4:14 says, “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” A vapor is a fine mist-like fog. It quickly burns away when the sun comes up. It has no substance and leaves nothing behind. Comparing our lives to a vapor illustrates how fleeting our days on this earth are. Life can feel endless at times, but the Bible reminds us that, compared to eternity, an individual life on earth is like a vapor chased away by the morning sun. It is important to recognize the brevity of life so that we don’t squander the time we’ve been given.

  • Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

  • Our primary reason for living must have eternal focus & it is wise to recognize the brevity of life instead of living a life of pleasure & indulgence
  • Love God, love others - how well do we do this?
  • Loving God is displayed in our priorities - where we spend our time and money, and where our thoughts are focused

  • This world is not our home

  • CS Lewis: “The fact that our heart yearns for something Earth can't supply is proof that Heaven must be our home.”
  • As Christians, we should have a vertical vision that empowers our horizontal living.
  • “So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” 2 Corinthians 4:18 NLT
  • Eternity is permanent, this is why it’s so important to witness to others and pray for more souls to come to Christ.
  • Our life is the seedtime of eternity — what is sown now — will be reaped in an eternal, changeless state.” — James Smith (from What is Life).
  • “Meditation on the shortness of time would cool the heat of our affections for the WORLD.” - Thomas Watson

  1. A Shadow: (psalms 102:11 “My days are like a lengthened shadow, And I wither away like grass”.)

Sexual immorality = porneia in Greek, meaning “illicit sexual activity”

Changing the word sexual sin for porneia leaves us with a strong message in the New Testament:

“The body is not meant for porneia but for the Lord” (1 Corinthians 6:13).

“Flee from porneia. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body” (1 Corinthians 6:18).

“But among you there must not be even a hint of porneia, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people” (Ephesians 5:3)

Jesus was always going after the heart…

“But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28)

What is the common theme of sexual immorality, sexual sin, pornography, and sex work/trafficking? It starts with lust & involves greed, exploitation, manipulation, and distortion of sex for one’s selfish gain.

Children are the most vulnerable and easily manipulated people group and we see them being targeted.

From ourrescue.org:

  • 40.3 million people are trafficked globally - 25% are children
  • Human trafficking is the second largest illicit activity in the world - only behind the drug trade
  • 72% of individuals trafficked were for sexual exploitation

From fightthenewdrug.org:

  • Research involving current and former porn performers suggests that exploitation and trafficking are common experiences in the porn industry, with pornography ranking as the third-most common form of trafficking reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.
  • Fraud, coercion, and force are all used to produce pornographic content.
  • Porn is used to groom sexual abuse victims.
  • Increased pornography consumption is linked to men’s enjoyment of degrading, uncommon, or aggressive sexual behaviors.
  • Approximately 91.5% of men and 60.2% of women report consuming porn in the past month, according to a 2020 study.
  • Because of desensitization, many porn consumers find themselves consuming more porn, consuming more often, or consuming more extreme forms of pornography.

Pornography and sexual sin is a warped view of what sex is intended for and has devastating consequences on the mind, relationships, mental health, and protection of women and children.

  • Amy Berg a filmmaker created a documentary called “An Open Secret” about the child sexual abuse issue in Hollywood exposing a lot of higher-ups in the film industry.

  • The cultural push is that there is no difference between men & women. We see distinct differences throughout the bible but there has been a pendulum swing in some circles.
  • Extremes of feminism & trad wives trends - where is the balance? How have we seen this in culture, in our own lives, and on social media?
  • Our purpose as women of God is not to fit a specific mold - there is nuance to everything. Our purpose is unique. It depends on your relationship status, living situation, family of origin, etc.
  • God made all of mankind equal in value but different in personality, purpose, and giftings. (Galatians 3:28 states that “there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”)… God made women different than men in a beautiful way - but what does that look like practically?
  • Proverbs 31 Woman - what is she? This is what she did over her entire lifetime - not at one period of time
  • Far more precious than jewels - she is invaluable
  • She is trustworthy
  • Hardworking
  • Provides for her household & is selfless
  • Entrepreneur
  • Strong
  • Generous to the poor
  • Her husband is where he is because of her contributions - teamwork

  • The great commission is for men & women - we are to make disciples & love others everywhere we go

  • Our purpose is to love God & love others - not to fit a cultural mold. Women have a purpose & design but our worth is not found in specific action items & a checklist.
  • ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)
  • “Do the next right thing with excellence and to the glory of God” - ABS
  • Where are you falling into “trends”? What unique purpose has God placed on your life?

1 Peter 3:3-4: “Your beauty should not come from outward adornments, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

Notes:

Simple Ways to Enjoy God

  • We tend to think of God as isolated to church, bible studies, or worship time during church.
  • God is the creator of everything - James tells us that every good gift is from above… Do we believe the lie that life is purposeless (nihilism) or think that everything material is evil (Gnosticism)?

  • We are commanded to LOVE God & Love others.

  • Loving God includes worshiping him through our day-to-day lives - and not solely on Sunday.
  • Our actions WILL be counter-cultural.

Ways to enjoy God & His creation in simple ways:

  • The world around us: Nature, walks, creation & beauty.
  • Love & humanity: relationships - enjoying moments with family, friends, and your church community - there is great importance in prioritizing community.
  • Creativity: Hard work - Art, creativity, being good stewards of what God has given us, the “flow” that comes when we are working in our talents and gifts given by God.

Importance of creating a habit of doing what connects you to God:

  • What situations or things bring you closer to God?
  • How can you incorporate more of this into your day-to-day?
  • Are you prioritizing ways to fight culture & reroot your mind on the goodness of God?

Simple ideas:

  • Carving out time in the day to walk in nature.
  • Time spent in His word (podcasts, devotionals, quiet time)
  • Dedicate time each week to meet in the community or spend time with loved ones.
  • What are your gifts or talent and how can you use them to glorify God?
  • What is one thing you might need to give up that is flesh-glorifying instead of God-glorifying? (music, tv, spending, idolization)

Anxiety & worry —> indicates a lack of trust in God or fear of loss/change. What is the root cause of our fear or worry? Gotquestions.org: The main reason we should trust God is that He is worthy of our trust. Unlike men, He never lies and never fails to fulfill His promises. “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19; Psalm 89:34). We can learn to trust God as we see him working in our lives & the lives of others around us. When has God been faithful in our lives previously? Why do we doubt him moving forward? Gotquestions.org: Should we trust in ourselves or in others who are sinful, unpredictable, unreliable, have limited wisdom, and frequently make bad choices and decisions swayed by emotion? Or do we trust in the all-wise, all-knowing, all-powerful, gracious, merciful, loving God who has good intentions for us? The choice should be obvious, but we fail to trust God because we don’t know Him. As already stated, we cannot hope to trust in someone who is essentially a stranger to us, but that is easily remedied. God has not made Himself difficult to find or know. All we need to know about God, He has graciously made available to us in the Bible, His holy Word to His people. To know God is to trust Him. Do I believe He will provide everything I need? There are a ton of references in the Bible about not worrying or being fearful. Why?  Because God knows our tendency as humans is to doubt.  We have to remember that God knows the future, He holds it in his hands.  “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” – James 1:6 God knows the desires of our hearts. We need to understand the second coming of Christ.

1st coming: Jesus as a baby. Servant, humble, meek, second chances. Dying for our sins gives us the choice of salvation, and eternal life.

2nd coming: Judgment day, War, paying for our sins, War with the devil.

  • Revelations 19:11-16 CHRIST ON THE WHITE HORSE— Describes Christ’s coming as a conqueror.
  • “Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”Revelation 19:11-16 NKJV

— His return could occur at any moment.

— Be steadfast and faithful to the call He has for your life.

— Share the gospel.

— Live out the truth that is only found in the Bible.

— Expect persecution. (2 Timothy 3:12 “…Everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ will be persecuted”.)

— Study & learn the BIBLE

  • Matthew 24:5-8 “Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.”
  • 2 Timothy 3:1-5 “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.”

— How should Christians view politics? What should our attitude be?

“Politics is merely a method God uses to accomplish His will. Even though evil men abuse their political power, meaning it for evil, God means it for good…”

  1. God’s law is above man's law.
  2. God is in control of all things. (Daniel 4:34 “…for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation…”)
  3. The government and politicians cannot save us.
  4. Ultimately our politics must align with the word of God. We are to live out God’s truth and live out His laws.
  5. Speak the truth in love. (Gay marriage, transgenderism, sexualization of children, abortion.)

We are to live out God’s truth

On today's show, we are talking about work ethic. The benefit of work is a theme seen throughout the Bible.

  • “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24

— God cares about our work ethic. He commands us to work hard in whatever we do. We do not work for the man but for God.

— The Lord created us to work, you can see this as early as Adam and Eve.

  • Genesis 2:15 “ “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

— Throughout the Bible God gives instructions on how to work.

  • “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23

— Work is important, it is not our identity but working for the Lord will bring joy in the most mundane activities.

— Rest is also important, this was seen when God created the heavens and earth. He rested on the seventh day.

  • “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it, you shall not do any work” Exodus 20:9-10a
  • Psalm 19 says that God reveals Himself to the world through His work.
  • “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

  • Where does God say our identity is rooted?
    • Being a child of God

        • For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.Washington-post, “a person’s name is the greatest connection to their own identity and individuality”.

A. We must see ourselves how the Lord sees us.

Galatians 2:20 “I've been crucified in Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me…”

B. We are saved by grace, meaning we are holy, saints, and blemish free. Because of that, we should live like it.

1 John 1:9 “He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”.

C. Are we sinners, saints, or both?

— We are born into the world sinners.

— When we are saved we no longer identify as a sinner, but as holy, blemish-free individuals in God’s eyes.

— We must remember who we are in Christ.

  • The Bible speaks about laziness (see proverbs 6:9-10)

  • The definition of doubt is “to lack confidence, to consider unlikely.

How can we battle doubt in our relationship with God?

  • Learn who God is and build a relationship with Him. Fill your mind with his promises.
  • “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” (Romans 10:17).
  • The more we learn about the Lord the more our faith increases.
  • Prayer stops doubt. God hears our prayers. When our prayers align with God's plan it will come to fruition. Luke 11:9-13
  • We can stand firm on the promises of the Lord.
  • “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.” James 1:6-7 NIV

Every human has limitations intellectually - therefore, our concept of the totality of the world, eternity, and God’s plan is hard for us to understand. It is impossible to grasp fully without the word of God.

Doubt comes from our sin nature: we trust in our own understanding—> doubt, which is a destroyer of life. Contrarily, faith is trusting God even when his plan goes against our reasoning & understanding.

Faith is simply trust. Genuine faith, belief, and trust will move us to action. Basic elements of Faith:

Taking God at his word and trusting Him to do what he promised. Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Faith takes risk and trust. “Living by faith and not by sight” Corinthians 5:7 Don’t mix this up for an irrational impulse, not bathed in prayer. Seek counsel from other believes and truth in God’s word.

Acts of Faith in The Bible:

Noah building the ark. Abraham preparing to sacrifice his son. Rahab sheltering spies in her home. David using a stone to defeat Goliath. Peter walking on water.

What is my heart posture? — A godly person strives to do everything with a “God-ward” perspective.

Those whose hearts are inclined toward God will make every effort to dress modestly, decently, and appropriately. Psalms 23: God Meets Our Emotional Needs

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

Psalms 23:1-4 NKJV

  • We try to distract ourselves from the disappointment that life can bring. How does this manifest in todays society? Anxiety, depression, anger, jealousy, no margin in our lives, “busyness”, etc.
  • How does the Lord restore our soul? “He makes us lie down…” Have you ever truly been quiet and still with God?
  • When I go through the valley who/what am I putting my trust in?
  • In what ways do I try to distract myself from my fears & failures instead of running to the Lord & resting in his presence?
  • Do I only lean on God when times are hard?

-The temptation in the valley is to quit. But David says even when he’s in the valley he will NOT fear. God gives us a gift even when we’re in the valley. He gives us his presence.

-When we run out of human options we will discover His supernatural presence.

-God doesn’t give us what we want - he gives us what we NEED. What fruit may come from this valley or difficulty that you are going through?

-In the shadows we get to see who God really is. We must not only trust God in the mountain tops but in the valleys.

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.” John 10:27-29 NKJV

Why are we Christians?

  • Important topic to discuss due to false doctrine being SO prevalent - often times we get lost in religion and forget the true gospel
    • Prosperity gospel, health & wealth, works based salvation, being “good enough” to earn our salvation
  • What does it really mean to be a Christian?
    • Surrendering to God, recognizing our own filth / sin, and living by the spirit once we accept Jesus as our Lord & savior
    • The gospel is so beautiful because it does not discriminate based on class, race, gender, background, or status
    • Talk about our own testimonies & our walks with God - what was a turning point for us?
    • What does born again mean? Means “born from above” or “becoming children of God” *see John 3:3-5
  • From the fall of man, each human was born sinful & with a heart loving sin & evil
    • No animal sacrifice would ever be enough to atone for our sin
      • From crosswalk.com: “God created an atonement for Adam and Eve’s sin based on the shedding of blood of innocent animals. These innocent animals served as substitutes. A substitute paid a price by blood which is accepted by God to restore the broken relationship. That is what we see all throughout the Old Testament in the sacrificial system.” Animals were sacrificed in the Old Testament, and in Genesis 3, to ultimately point to the Lamb of God.
    • Jesus was sent to earth as the perfect sacrifice for our sin - FINALLY sufficient
    • His death on the cross is what we actually deserve - it is a free gift to us & nothing we can ever earn
    • We all fall short & cannot meet Gods criteria. Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
    • As sinners we are spiritually dead.
  • From this sacrifice, we can life FROM grace - which produces works & good fruit
  • Share this freedom with others & bring others to Christ
    • Our lives are not meant to be lived for ourselves

Ephesians 2: 8-9

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

John 14:26

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

James 2:26

For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

God works outside of our realm of thinking in terms of time, time frames

Our human nature makes waiting challenging - we are always in a hurry and find it difficult to wait for anyone or anything

Patience is a virtue - do we exude this? Difficulty with patience reveals our level of trust in God’s timing

God’s perspective is eternal - are we aligned with the eternal perspective?

Trials develop perseverance - even challenges work to our good (Romans 8:28)

Hebrews 11: hall of faith

Many of these individuals never saw the promises fulfilled on this side of their lives However, the promises still stand & have been seen to fruition to this day! Ie. Abraham & his dependents as numerous as the stars Our view of timing is influenced by our selfish desire for our needs & wants, not God’s eternal plan

God’s timing is better than our own thoughts on what timing “should be”

Psalm 145:17… “The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does.”

Give examples of timing working out better than we anticipate

Jobs, business, relationships

Nothing can be added to God’s plans and nothing taken away

Ecclesiastes 3:11-14… He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.

Do we fear a lack of control?

Paul often talks about preaching by the spirit and not his own wisdom. God uses the foolish things to confound the wise. His power and timing is made known by the perfect order of our universe

Provers 3:5-6 Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.

A. Understand that my timing is not God’s timing. Do we trust God with our next step? B. Often God needs to develop us before we can handle the blessings He has for us. C. When our passion and desire align with God’s will, we are guaranteed God will bring it to fruition. D. Steward well what you already have.

Ways to avoid mishandling blessing:

Be diligent and take care of what God currently has in front of you. Trust in Gods timing. Appreciate where God has you right now. Use your blessings to bless others. Be obedient to God’s word.

Have you wondered what the Bible says about our involvement in politics? On this episode we dive into 5 main areas every Christian should consider when it comes to unity, politics, and the role of the church in the political realm. This is going to be a great one, enjoy!  Show Notes: 

Should Christians be involved with politics? How should a Christian view politics? Should our faith influence our political standing? How can we deal with political division in the church? Am I called to stand up or be a peacemaker?

Are all Christians called to be involved in politics? Some Christians will be called others will not feel the same convictions. If you feel a conviction about something, pray & seek wise counsel. If you still have the same conviction, going against this is sin. We do need to remember that who we elect will determine our religious freedoms. A divided world needs a united church. God calls us to search for peace and work to maintain it but also Christ had righteous anger in the temple.

Our political stance should be determined by our faith & what is clearly stated in the Bible.

Anything done from a place without faith is sin "So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin" (Romans 14:22-23) Faith pleases God. In fact without faith it is impossible to please God ( Hebrews 11:6 ). So it makes since that everything we do should originate and proceed from faith, otherwise we are acting of our own accord. Faith is relying on and believing in God's provision instead of ourselves. Hebrews says that "faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see" ( Hebrews 11:1 ). So in the kingdom of God, faith is very important. Paul says that "everything that does not come from faith is sin" ( Romans 14:22-23 ). This seems like a radical statement, but knowing how important faith is to the believer helps put into perspective everything he has been saying in this entire chapter. We are to exercise our personal convictions while keeping ourselves striving to know and obey his truth and will. When we operate in this way, we are operating in faith and God is pleased with faith. This gives us the freedom to live without reservation in His presence and he accepts this. In fact the Bible tells us that we are blessed by this liberty ( Romans 14:22 ).

We have to remember ultimate control and power is not in the hands of government but of God. (Daniel) God uses politics to accomplish His will. He knows that people will abuse their power but God can and will use it for His ultimate purpose. Recognize that the government can not save us. But God does establish all authority.

Ep. 30 Show Notes: "False Names & New Identities"

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

  1. What does it mean to be a new creation? Our lives are no longer worldly; they are now spiritual. Our “death” is of the old sin nature, it was nailed to the cross with Christ.
  2. What is the old self? refers to everything that is part of our old nature—natural pride, love of sin, reliance on works, and our former opinions, habits and passions. Everything out sin nature craves: LOVE OF SELF
  3. What ways do I hold onto my old self? There is a difference between continuing to sin and continuing to live in sin.
  4. How do I know if I have been made new? We go through a sanctification process (made holy) day by day, sinning less and hating it more each time we fail. Our new self hates the sin that still has a hold on us. The difference is that the new creation is no longer a slave to sin, as we formerly were. We are now freed from sin and it no longer has power over us. Romans 6:6-7

What is spiritual maturity? -Simply the process of becoming more like Christ (sanctification) -The whole point of having a faith is to grow in spiritual maturity & Christ likeness. -Think of a child, a 2 year old should act like a 2 year old we’re okay with that. But if a 12 year is acting like a 2 year old there’s a problem. We would say they are immature. -Being effective and fruitful in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus is the essence of spiritual maturity. Things to remember:

Everyone is at different places in their walk. We shouldn’t judge others but encourage & challenge them along their journey. We should remind baby believers of right and wrong from God’s perspective. It’s an ongoing process. Refinement never ends. Spiritual maturity requires a reordering of priorities. As Christians we have this power to submit to the spirit and be spirit led.

“I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me.” Philippians 3:12 NLT “No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead…” Philippians 3:13 NLT “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.” 2 Peter 1:3 NLT “The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.” 2 Peter 1:8-9 NLT

Dangers of dating when you are unequally yoked? What does the Bible say? Why does this matter? A. There is no spiritual harmony (the Bible clearly states this)

“What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?” 2 Corinthians 6:15 NLT “And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”2 Corinthians 6:16 NLT

B. Bad company corrupts good character. Dating/marrying a non believer can and will hinder your walk. (Corinthians 15:33) C. Settling for a relationship that is not God centered will NOT strengthen your relationship with God. It will be a distraction & potentially cause you to fall away from God’s will. Are you distracted or focused? D. When you choose to date someone, they are a potential marriage partner. You want to choose someone you desire to be on mission with. E. Is your purpose aligned with their purpose?

Can God Use Me? Short answer, yes! God cannot wait to use you for His glory!   • We often chase the idea of being “good enough” or “holy enough” to be used by God (checking off boxes & attempting to be worthy)
  • We have to understand we will never be good enough without Christ. We are not complete alone.
  • God uses imperfect people because he doesn’t have a choice otherwise. He knows we are fallen. (Everyone used by God was imperfect aside from Jesus)
  • Think about the disciples/famous people in the Bible: Were they perfect? Did Jesus still use them?
  • God has paid for your sins & wants to use you for his kingdom.
  • He has a plan for your life: spread the gospel with the gifts and talents he has given you.
  • He will use your struggle & brokenness to reach others. It can be a powerful part of your testimony.
  • God uses the foolish to confound the wise. He likes a “comeback” story that no one thinks is possible.

Episode 25: Why Men Need Women “The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the Lord.” Proverbs 18:22 NLT

It is not good for man to be alone. This implies that Adam was incomplete by himself. “Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Genesis 2:18 NLT Eve made up for Adam’s deficiencies.God recognized that there was a lacking in the mans life without a woman. That’s why the women was created to help the man. God is our helper. The same Jewish terminology used in Gen 2:18 is used when describing God/HS. The idea is that woman is the ideal partner to man. Woman was not created above or below but equal to man. The Hebrew word “Kenegdow” is used in the verse as well meaning: “according to the opposite of him”. We are created for relationships. GOD CREATED US TO NEED COMPANIONSHIP.♦️Ephesians 5:31 “As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” This does not mean that everyone needs a husband or wife. Look at the apostle Paul, saying that celibacy is a good thing as a believer (1 Cor. 7:7-9) and we can devote more time and attention to God potentially, if we are not married.

Additional Notes: ▫️Helpmeet: suitable, fit, proper for Adam. (Synonym for helpmate) The character of God is embodied in a man AND a woman. Femininity and the relational side of women is a part of God’s character. Masculinity : strength, protection, respect Femininity: nurturing, loving, giver of life All of these characteristics are embodied in men and women - not one gender Men and women were made different ON PURPOSE and for God’s purpose. “Be fruitful and multiply” applies to man and woman coming together for reproduction & attending to the growth of humanity. 1 Corinthians 11:12 “Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God."

EPISODE NOTES: What is spiritual discernment? It is the ability to tell the difference between truth and error.

  1. Wisdom is unattainable without God. The devils task in this life is to “blind the minds of unbelievers” -Without Christ we are blind fools.
  2. The world’s way of getting wisdom is different from God’s way. It is not bad to be knowledgeable or educated but spiritual discernment cannot be attained through worldly knowledge.
  3. Spiritual discernment ultimately has to do with wisdom and the ability to distinguish truth from error.
  4. How do we develop discernment?

  5. A. Ask for it & pray for God’s knowledge to be revealed.

  6. “‘Come and listen to my counsel. I’ll share my heart with you and make you wise.” Proverbs 1:23 NLT
  7. B. Train & practice through learning biblical truths. We need meat not milk to develop. Discernment is revealed through Christ and “developed through training in righteousness & prayer”
  8. “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:14

We gain discernment by getting to know Jesus through his word then aligning our lives with his truth.

  • How can we know truth from a lie if we don’t know the truth in the first place? Think counterfeit money, do you study all the fakes or become extremely knowledgeable with the real thing?

Show Summary: Why Women Need Men Where was this first seen in the Bible? Think Eve in the garden, encouraging her husband to eat the apple. She took on the role of the leader.

“Then he said to the woman, “I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you. ” Genesis 3:16 1. What is the mans role in the Bible?

God created man first then the woman from man. “Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Genesis 2:18 NLT The mans position is over his wife and under Christ. Man is the protector & provider Man is called to be the leader of his household The man leaves his parents and is joined to his wife, the two become one. (Genesis 2:24)

“But there is one thing I want you to know: The head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” 1 Corinthians 11:3 NLT 2. What is the women’s role in the Bible?

“Man was not made from woman. Woman was made from man, and man was not made for woman. Woman was made for man.”  1 Corinthians 11: 8-9 The women is the helper Child barrier Women need to accept the authority of the man (in the context of marriage). Women are not called to submit to any random man - they are called to submit to their husband’s authority. “Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.” Genesis 2:22 NLT

  1. Men and women are both created in the image of God. Our position is dominion over ALL creation. Men and women are equal partners in marriage (1 Peter 3:7)

Both possess equal value and dignity as divine image-bearers Male and female share equally in the assignment to rule over God’s creation. God commands male and female to “be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it” (Gen 1:28) Excerpt from the gospel coalition:  Even though God’s good design in creation may be marred by the Fall and by sin, God’s good design is not erased by the Fall and by sin. As the apostle Paul writes, “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer” (1Tim 4:4–5). Adam and Eve are indeed paradigms of difference even after the Fall, and those complementary differences have been pronounced “good” by God, and they are still good today.

Demonizing men (hating patriarchy) Encouraging women to “be like men” (a push for pursuit of high ranking job positions, high incomes) Encouraging promiscuity, abortion, overall sexual sin (my body, my choice) Pushing gay/lesbian/trans agenda Viewing women as the leader versus submissive to her husband.

What is pride? In today's culture self-centeredness seems to be a virtue. What does God say about pride? What does He say about humility?
