This iconic book about being remarkable or being invisible has stood out as a marketing go-to book for many decades now. In this week’s episode I’ve finally have had a chance to read and review this book.

Why I decided to read the book:

The P’s of marketing: product, pricing, promotion, packaging publicity to name a few

Regular cows are quite boring, but a purple cow would be interesting (for a moment)

Be remarkable throughout the book: if there isn’t something interesting about your product then it is invisible

You have to go where you competition is now - the farther the better

  • Be the most at something: the oldest, newest, loudest - test all of them

The Cycle of the Cow:

  1. Find way to alert fans of your new purple cows
  2. Make it easy for early adopters to share
  3. Once you’ve made profit, let someone else run
  4. Reinvest and create a new purple cow (plan for failure because it is hard)

Not standing out is the same as being invisible. Being remarkable means not being liked by everyone

Don’t make a product that is for everyone, be specific with you niche and hone in on their needs

Don’t cater to the masses, cater to the customers that choose you and that you want to have

  • It’s a lot easier to sell to someone who is already in the mood to buy.

Create things worth talking about - Invite users to make recommendations for the product

  • Most Importantly: Take your company profits and invest in creating something new

Common Cycle:

  1. Buy ads
  2. Get more distribution
  3. Sell more products
  4. Make a profit

Elizabeth loves small business owners, and as one she knows that entrepreneurs love what they do, but that doesn't mean they love all the things they HAVE to do.

She works with small business owners who love what they do, but the sales and marketing part of their job sucks their will to live. We work together to put systems and schedules in place so that the sales and marketing part of your job isn't the worst part of your day.

One of her favorite systems is a regular newsletter. Yup, she thinks newsletters are a great way to connect with your network when you aren’t selling them something. I promise it won’t hurt and you might find it’s an easy way to find new clients and keep current clients and customers eager for more.

A show you probably know very well, but a series that has taken me a pandemic to stop and binge. Yes, I'm talking about the folks on Madison Avenue. Here are my top 7 quotes from Mad Men:

  1. “Advertising is based on one thing: happiness. And do you know what happiness is? Happiness is the smell of a new car. It’s freedom from fear. It’s a billboard on the side of a road that screams with reassurance that whatever you’re doing is OK. You are OK.” - Don Draper
  2. “Make it simple, but significant.” – Don Draper
  3. “I’d never recommend imitation as a strategy. You’ll be second, which is very far from first.” — Peggy
  4. “Fear stimulates my imagination.” - Don Draper
  5. “The president is a product. Don’t forget that.” –Pete
  6. “Who knows why people in history did good things? For all we know Jesus was trying to get the loaves and fishes account.” –Roger Sterling
  7. MYSTERY QUOTE - Listen to the episode to find out!

This week we dive into a book analysis of Measure What Matters by John Doerr. Many of us have heard of SMART goals, but what about OKRs? (Objectives and Key Results).

TOPICS:

  • Google implementation and success with OKRs
  • Intel model for success
  • Objectives = vision/inspirational
  • Key Results = Milestone
  • Goals should be public + clear to get buy-in, Everyone working in same direction

OKR’s behind all billion dollar products:

Google Search, chrome, android, maps, youtube, google play, and gmail

OKRs Create = focus/commitment to product, teamwork, accountability, stretch better than animal performance revents, instill continuous improvements, importance of culture

How to Create Effective OKRs

  • Crush the purpose for a task (make it overly clear)
  • Setting goals for the next 6-12 months, setting goals is important (non action or nondecisions leads to nothing)

Creating a goal driven culture

OKR tips:

  • Keep the number of quarterly OKRs to 3-5
  • All key results must result in the obtainment of the objective or else it is not an OKR
  • OKRs are not set in stone, you can change them along the way for the process
  • Goals need to be specific and time bound

MyFitnessPal Example

Intuit Example:

Scoring assessment after: 0.07 - 1.0 is success, 0.4-0.6 progress made but not completed, 0.0-0.04 (failed, little to no progress made)

Reflection Questions:

  • Did I accomplish all of my goals, why or why not?

  • What obstacles did I encounter?

  • What did I learn that I can apply to next goal?

  • The YouTube story

  • Adobe Check-In’s

  • Bono’s One Campaign

Summary: how to manage lofty goals or a company where there are a million things that are a priority. Measuring things back to Key Results that are measurable and obtainable.

Everyone remembers the hoops they grew up on — that distinct sound of the swish of the net, the slap of the bank shot on the backboard, and the thousands of imaginary walk-off buzzer beaters. BUCKETS came to be organically as a way to preserve and admire the neighborhood hoops throughout our city, Portland, OR.

Three years and 350+ hoops photographed later, our ode to the city culminates in a coffee table book of these neighborhood hoops.

Dollar For is a nonprofit organization that, through innovative practices and a community-oriented approach, advocates for families with overwhelming medical expenses.

After founder and CEO Jared Walker experienced several family medical emergencies and couldn’t find any organizations to help with the bills these emergencies brought, he started one himself.

Dollar For fights for those who find themselves in an all too familiar position these days – stuck with a mountain of debt after a medical emergency. Dollar For provides relief to these families, working with a team of attorneys to delve into hospital programs and streamline the process of debt relief for qualifying patients.

The world of healthcare finances can be complex and confusing, and certainly not something a family dealing with a medical emergency should have to worry about. Dollar For simply saw a need that no one else was fulfilling and, until the healthcare system can support these efforts itself, we’re committed to helping every family we can escape crippling medical bills.

We have some very exciting news… we’re changing our name to VidMark!!

  • Video & Marketing combined
  • Why change (media marketing gets lost with social media marketing, not a lot, if any podcasts at all covering video marketing specifically)
  • This will provide more focus for me and for you as the audience (so taking my own advice finally)
  • Video marketing is an interesting and vast topic, haven’t seen too many other podcasts with this kind of focus
  • What we hope to provide - comprehensive, lots of guests, still dabbling and overlapping into other marketing tactics
  • Logo reveal (explain thought process), Redesigning intro and outro
  • Lens into video production in particular (keep things simple)
  • Hope this is helpful to you, I always try to make it fun, interesting and informative
  • A little sneak peak at the next few episodes, I’ve interviewed other video marketing professionals in Portland as well as businesses that are successfully implementing video into their overall marketing strategy.

Until next time, make sure you’re hitting the mark!

I've been wanting this feature for a long time now and LinkedIn and has finally made it possible to send short form video content to platform users! In this episode I will be going over:

How LinkedIn Stories are different than instagram

  • Professional
  • More value
  • But fun side as well - things that are professional and fun (golfing, sponsorship, volunteer events)
  • Not bragging, but showcasing
  • Highlight portfolio type work for my freelance friends
    • More behind the scenes
    • Triple down for those who have the resources

Why excited

  • 1 More way to connect and test your audience (polls, trial of what people watch, etc.
  • Provide more intelligent content (self improvement, etc.)

Predictions:

  • Shorter attention spans
  • Value-add over everything
  • Lose trust pretty quickly by messing around (more serious platform)

Opportunity-Cost:

  • Low thought (document, don’t create - gary vee tribute)
  • Quick to capture
  • Fast results to measure (24 hour lifespan)

Feature Intrigue:

Question of the Day - makes it easier to remember, low cost to LinkedIn to build the most basic features and test quickly.

Wishes:

  • Add some cool filters, some different engagement features (maybe more data visualization on results eg: pie charts, )

Tips:

  • On Camera: Do many takes if you have to
  • Lighting: Film in front of windows at home
  • Audio: Listen for background noise (music, trucks, tv’s)
  • Bonus: Make sure to look into the lens of the camera

Leaves are changing, people’s attitudes are changing and the world has now been dealing with COVID-19 for about 9 months now

1. Shorter Days

  • Less light and time
  • Leaves are changing color, keep that in mind for filming projects

2. Holidays are coming!

  • Prepare some culture videos around the holidays
  • Singing Christmas carols, maybe wishing your customers a safe and happy holidays
  • Holiday sale (discount on brand videos for the new year)

3. Great time to start planning a media content (my recommendation brand video)

  • Script writing (brand statement)
  • Vendor
  • Shot ideas (what are some of your day-to-day activities)
  • Plan for about 1-2 month turn around

Starting a Podcast

  1. More people inside, better to start now than in 2021 when feel even more behind
  2. Kids are back in school (should be focused during the day)
  3. Keep up with trends

    1. make sure you content is mindful and sensitive to all groups (election, thanksgiving, end of year celebrations)
    2. Planning content around sporting events (NFL, Stanley Cup)

      1. Will affect your content interactions

Emma didn’t start out in tech – she was a strategist for global consumer brands. Her job was to help products make an emotional connection with customers. Then she fell into B2B and met her first tech client. She was shocked at how cold and technical their marketing was...and how it sounded just like everyone else. So I helped them differentiate with a message that made their disruptive technology easy to understand — and connected to their deeper why. In the process, she found her own “why” — to help visionary startups tell their story, so important technology gains traction to help make our world a better place. She works with Visionary Founders/CEOs of tech or tech-enabled products and Kickass Marketers. She offers strategic messaging development that will simplify your complex product, differentiate your brand and convey genuine value to your prospects – in just 6 weeks. Her Meaningful Messaging approach is proven to resonate with your target audience and differentiate your company. The secret sauce? Blending her experience in B2B with magic from consumer branding, conversion copywriting and human psychology.

  • Trust, are you reliable, will you make their life better, do they respect you? Easily outline the steps a customer must take when working with you, Envision the steps a customer would take after purchasing your product. Make it easy on your website for customers to find resources

  • Generosity will be rewarded by customers Motivators: getting some sort of power or position, becoming whole/complete because of something, self realization to make them whole).

Status Update example: Starbucks star rewards program Completeness example: tools offering to make you super human Reaching full potential examples: Rudy, Legally Blond, Dove forensic sketch campaign (what woman thought looked like vs stranger description)

  1. The character 2. The problem 3. The plan 4. The success Where to Use your one-liner a ton: memorize and say (pretend like you’re an actor), have team/company memorize, website, business cards, on the wall, packaging - over use it!

  • How to cultivate online relationships

  • What platforms I have found good relationship success

  • Finding Your Tribe (Groups)

  • getting active online

  • Engagement

Getting Active:

  • Asking Questions

  • Answer Questions

  • Commenting

  • Sharing helpful information (So much info online, you can be a filter)

Problem: Join generic, too broad range

  • Dial it in to your geography, can you actually meet these people?

  • Dial into your industry

  • Service

  • Targe audience

  • Cherry pick off competitors

OUTREACH:

  • Talked about group - then individual

  • Alliances, business prospects, supporters

Alliance: Would you like to collaborate, share information

Prospect: Can you help them with your service offerings?

Supporters: People who like your content or show - ask for feedback, how can you better help them? (Extend to current audience)

Speaking of Supporters - THE POWER OF RESPONSE

What people currently do:

  • Many people - Read, don't respond

  • Treat people like robots, not human

  • Personalize it

  • Emojis are popular (depends on the professionalism of your brand)

Online Relationships: Not sure why we treat these any differently, It takes more than just one interaction to get to know someone - same is true with simply liking a post and moving on, Reach out individually, comment, circle back - set up a phone call if feeling ambitious (Create reminders on your favorite app tracking service, etc if you have to).

Podcasts are the modern blog, people who have personality, speaking ability, charisma. More intimate than reading. Popular and easy to access.

Who, What, When, Where, Why

Tip: Important to segment: people want to do advice, personal, and interests. Stick to one topic/issue per channel

When: What days of the week are you going to post. In the early stages try not to get hung up as there is a learning curve to finding your production schedule.

Where: iTunes, Spotify, Sticher

Video form on YouTube (make little segments about popular issues)

Why: Personal why: Mission statement for why you want to do it

  • Helps build professional brand and credibility

  • Audience Why should listen

Equipment: Field recorder (on the fly) | Zoom H4N | Lav mic (not as full sound as a traditional podcast mic)

List of stuff for beginners

Computer: Audacity is free, I use Premiere

Outlining/Content Planning: Content (Dreamstorm), Guests (start talking, asking if interested)

Tips I've learned along the way: Do what you can with what you have, Be easy on yourself, especially in the beginning, Ask people who know you for ideas (trust me people will have thoughts)

Segment useful information

Promotion: Instagram, YouTube sections, Facebook group (like-minded people), Answer questions on Quora, Take audio and make into blog post/post audio clip within blog, Add to business card, Place on website, Facebook Page

Thanks for checking out the media marketing podcast. I'm your host Bryan Cargill. And today we're going to be talking about video. I Know video can be a little confusing little daunting. We watch it all the time. But have you actually implemented video into your own marketing strategy? That is what we will be talking about today. And yes, I know it is somewhat ironic that I am doing a podcast about video but have no video to show for this podcast. That is because A video is its own beast and I think for myself I know what it takes and I'm somewhat of a perfectionist. So just to get things off the ground with this podcast, I think focusing on one thing at a time which is just the audio component then incorporating via video later on will be something that will help motivate me and continue to produce episodes which in the early early early stages of a podcast for those of you who have not Started one bar looking to do that. It takes consistency and it takes has a learning curve and just building up those habits and producing something that your audience can look forward to each week. Each month is a big part of the whole production process. So my own personal background in video is I've been doing it for about seven years. I started out as just a hobby with some friends and it's later developed into a career at my previous. And yeah, I've been doing it ever since I think it's a great way to leverage your personal brand. It's a great way for people to see you as a professional and get that emotional connection and it's shareable and its unique just to you.

Hello and welcome to the media marketing podcast. A great place to learn about all things video photo podcasting and how to create and market those assets. But, I won’t be doing it alone, I’ll be bringing on some guests who are much more knowledgeable than myself and might just do things a little differently, and have some other great strategies that you can implement yourself. Which is great - this podcast is as much about me sharing as it is learning alongside you in this experience, exploration, journey.
