Conversation with dancer and choreographer JASMIN SHEPPARD about PREPARING GROUND – a new dance work that invites us to join First Peoples’ care of Land as an urgent act for our shared future.PREPARING GROUND is a First Nations-led dance work co-directed by pioneering indigenous artist Marilyn Miller, alongside Jasmin Sheppard and Katina Olsen. It dances of the future Future—a world where care for Country and community continues generationally. Conversation with artist THOMAS THORBY-LISTER about his solo exhibition SITE ACTIONS showing at Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf from 9th of April. to 11 May 2025SITE ACTIONS is an exhibition of site-responsive paintings that engage with the natural environment that surrounds Woollahra Gallery. The landscape acts as an active participant in the creative process, with elements such as rain, wind, sun and water leaving marks on the sheets of linen, which are eventually rendered in subtle monochromatic tones to reflect the natural hues of the environment. Allowing the natural forces to shape and imprint their textures onto the fabric, Thomas Thorby-Lister relinquishes a part of his agency to give a greater voice to nature and engage in the collaborative process of ‘making with’ more-than-human. Conversation with artist Carolyn Craig about their most recent solo exhibition – ALGEIC INTENT – on at Firsdraft gallery (Sydney) until 15 March 2025. ALGAEIC INTENT investigates the ways in which Algae thrive in the wreckage of capitalism. The work intermingles breathe, sound, image and desire through diffractive echo, to leak affect and challenge conventional narratives around social responsibility that isolate bodies as discrete entities that sustain the meritocracy myths of capitalism.Carolyn’s practice operates through conceptual ideas of how power is embedded within material exchanges – between bodies, objects and at a quantum level. They see material practices as a relational act connected to political spaces and the broader arts ecology, and have founded artist run space SCHMICK Contemporary in Haymarket with this ethos in mind. Conversation with performance artist Alan Schacher who works across the terrain of dance and installation, with an interest in architectural experiences and the performativity of public space. His performances “attempt to eke out the essence of site, materials and objects in relation to and with the performer’s body, the situation, and memory of place.”From Friday 27th to Sunday 29th of December, Alan will take a performative drawing residency at Drawspace gallery in Enmore. Conversation with walking-artist and curator MELINDA HUNT talking about the group exhibition WALK WITH ME, taking place at Drawspace in Sydney from 28 November to 22 December 2024.WALK WITH ME gathers nine local and international artists-researchers who utilise walking as part of their practice, encountering and mapping the walking sites and terrains through the medium of drawing. These drawings are not only reflective of the sites seen, but also the sites felt or experienced through the multisensory phenomena and the biodynamics of the walking body. Conversation with artist Belinda Yee about her coming solo exhibition INCREMENT at the Wentworth Galleries (Pitt St, Sydney) 7 to 10 November 2024. An exhibition of large-scale drawings, plus a live movement-based performance, INCREMENT explores the notion of temporality as reflected through the cold stone media – such as marble, graphite, sandstone – and soft tissues of the human body. Belinda’s work stands as an embodiment of time passing, with fugitive materials that reflect the fragility and impermanence of existence itself. Conversation with the Artistic Director of The Living Room Theatre, Michelle St Anne, about their latest work THE SEEPING WOMAN. The LIVING ROOM THEATRE has been in existence for more than 20 years and is known for giving voice to the unspoken and unseen. They create works that are non-linear and composed through movement, light, sound, and atmosphere – rather than the rigidity of the given language. In making the Living Room Theatre works, Michelle St Anne often reaches out to collaborators who come from diverse art disciplines. Conversation with painter and performance artist KATYA PETETSKAYA whose solo exhibition 'Am I Nature' is showing at Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in Katoomba until 8 October 2023. Katya Petetskaya’s works are made through gestural language and expressive mark making. The experiences that are stored in the body are translated into the large-scale abstract paintings that are left to feel alive, vibrating with energy. Her process-driven practice is led by the choice and use of materials, which she treats as collaborators who propose their own ideas and limitations to which she responds.Katya’s current solo exhibition – Am I Nature – investigates the complex relationship between humans and nature, which we on the one hand feel a part of and equal to whilst also trying to overcome and master. Lucia is an Italo-Australian writer living on Gadigal land. She is a regular reader at venues around Sydney and, in the written form, her works can be found in Riverstone, Sydney Review of Books, and LOR Journal. Lucia’s writing is playful, ecological, and queer. She holds a Master of Research in poetics, and works for an environmental NGO.

Conversation with Lleah Smith about the project FUTURE SCHOOL developed with Year 3-6 students at the Kandos Public School as a creative re-imaging of the traditional classroom, followed by the experiences of 'home-schooling' during the Covid-19 lockdowns. FUTURE SCHOOL is a framework on how to work with young people so their voices and opinions are heard, valued, and incorporated into the decision making processes. It is a project that builds and develops young people’s confidence, questions the hierarchies of knowledge and the function of the school within the community.

Conversation with artist Elizabeth Pulie, whose retrospective '#117 (Survey)' is at the UNSW Galleries from 15 Jan - 10 April, 2022. Back in the 80s and 90s, Elizabeth Pulie was involved in a conceptual painting project interrogating the definition of art and its commodity status. What is art? has been the question behind all of her work, including the Relational Art project where she edited and published magazine ‘Lives of the Artists’ and ran ‘The Front Room Gallery’, from the front room and the kitchen of her house. She is currently - since about 2012 - engaged in The End of Art project and her practice has expanded to embrace not only painting, but also sculptural textile works, and video art.
I am indebted to Elizabeth Pulie's curator James Gatt for many of the questions that have informed this conversation. His exhibition tour, alongside 'The Reader', was an invaluable resource in learning about Pulie's practice and gaining inspiration for structuring this interview.

Conversation with Kazahstan-born, Sydney-based interdisciplinary artist and writer Julia Bavyka. We talk about their latest project The Risk Taking, developed as part of the writers residency at Firstdraft. The project explores the politics and possibilities of dreams/dreaming, and considers dreams as "a form of knowledge production," when other forms of knowledge no longer provide the assurance. We also talk about issues of fatigue, precarity, and over-work; topics that often feature in Bavyka's work. As Bavyka says: "In order to dream you need to sleep." So what type of resistance and revolution needs to happen first, in order for us to dream - both individually and collectively.

Freedom Wilson is a printmaker who draws on location, to explore and study plant and fungi biodiversity. This process emphasises the importance of plant relationships functioning at a micro level when looking at the Australian landscape as a whole. She has been drawing and researching in the Gardens of Stone pagoda country before transforming life size plant drawings into macro, portrait like silkscreen prints. Her work carries a message of conservation for the preservation of these fragile areas.

On Monday 12 April, I was in conversation (from 05:10)with author, multi-species justice advocate, and environmentalist Danielle Celermajer, talking about and reading from her recently published book Summertime, written in the shadow of 2019/2020 Australian bushfires. We spoke about what is it to have a felt connection to land and embodied knowledge of climate change; about stewardship and responsibility; and about the possibilities between climate despair and hope.
After Danielle (from 30:30), I was on call to cross-disciplinary artist, Julie Vulcan, discussing the body of work she made in response to the wildfire that roared through the bush home she shares with her partner, trees, plants, fungi, critters and creatures. The fire miraculously spared her modest house which was now standing amidst a sea of ash. This ash, as well as the remembrance, care, and regeneration, became motives for Vulcan's recent works: Rescript, Dark Interludes, and a poem Ash. She tells us more about each in this interview.
We also speak about her ongoing body of work, WishingDARK which addresses the problems of saturation with light, or light pollution, and what we might be missing on when we loose the connection to and experience of darkness. For this part skip to 1:02:04.

TRANSRIPT: ”I was thinking how we usually don't hear the voices of people who record the sounds; they are the technicians behind the machine who make other people, or objects, or animals, or environments audible. I wanted us to hear the voices of these people so I invited them to record their voices in a way that is not articulated, trained, or aestheticized. It can be strange and unplanned, unexpected.
I wanted to unite all of these voices through their vulnerability and through their, let's say, trust that the other person who gets their sound will make something new out of it. So, one records it and then sends it to the next person who reacts from the same uncultivated and un-aesheticised perspective.
I think it's not very easy to participate because you have to record yourself in a way that cannot be evaluated as good or bad; beautiful or not. And also, you don't know what the end result will be because the next person may cut some part, add something else, and so one. But this is precisely what I was drawn to. I was drawn to this exploration that is not controlled and is based on trust and letting go, being ok with the fact that in this 'voice rally' or audio letter the next person will add something new and do something different, change it.
I also wanted to do this project with people that usually record sound because they can record the sound really well so it becomes a kind of body presence. I wanted for the sound to be technically really good so you can really connect with the person through the sound. It's not just some noise where you can't depict if it is a breath or some strange voice or... I did not want for the technicality to stand in between you and the other person. I wanted it to come into your ear without the interference so you can really connect with these other bodies. And in what I got back from people, I can really feel their body presence.
But of course, as with any audio work, it asks for a different kind of attention and perception. So you have to say yes to this particular kind of impulse that comes from the headphones. In order to connect to it and feel these voices, it's important that you don't look around, don't eat a sandwich or think about the things you will do in the next half an hour, but that your perception is a bit more calm and slowed down.” (Petra Mrsa, April 2020)

In 2019, I was commissioned to write a text on ‘Why Dance Matters Now?’ for Delving into Dance and Critical Path’s Interchange Festival. As I was writing, the fires were blazing across Australia and I thought a lot about the interrelation between our human bodies and nature that surrounds us (and that we are). As part of the process, I recorded a number of podcast-conversations with dancers, musicians, installation artists, somatic practitioners, wanting to know (amongst other things) what the concept ‘spatial awareness’ signifies to them. Are dancers more spatially aware than other people? Is this why dance matters?

This Artemis Projects podcast is with Melbourne-based theatre and performance maker Mish Grigor whom I Skyped on 20th August 2020 during the second wave of Covid19 lockdowns and shortly after her first ever digital performance titled 'Wasting Wasting Wasting Time' performed as part of Taipei's ADAM.
In this podcast Mish and I talk about her experience of performing via zoom - what were surprises, what challenges, and how does she feel about the liveness and the intimacy of the ‘in real life’ or ‘in person’ theatre being replaced by the digital interface. Can the same or a similar level of intimacy be achieved online?
The question we keep asking is: are we rushing to go online and therefore missing on an opportunity to slow down, rest, and cultivate deeper thoughts? Is speeding up in order to adjust and catch up with changes, blurring the clarity of our vision? Could ‘wasting time’ and doing nothing be the most responsible thing to do right now? And what do we even have in mind when we suggest that time could be wasted?

Back in December 2014, comedian Cait Harris and performance artist Ivan Cheng recorded their works for the x-mas show on Eastside Radio 89.7fm.
Cait Harris is a Sydney based performer and writer of plays, films and short stories. Her stories can be found in the ebook The Sturgeon General Recommends Cait Harris with Momentum Publishing and she can be seen performing on ABC 2’s new series Storyclub in January 2015. Every so often Cait can also be seen performing at the comedy venue Giant Dwarf on Cleveland Street, Redfern. In the comedy skit recorded for our show, Cait plays a radio presenter who after numerous unsuccessful relationships falls in love with a cockatoo.
Ivan Cheng is an Australian artist whose practice focuses on the damage in interpreting notation. As well as collaborative projects, he has shown conceptual performance work in Europe, North America, and Australia. Having studied at the Royal Academy of Music and Sydney Conservatorium of Music, he is developing scores which relate to formalism and history across cultural form, interested in the temporal act of reading and sight-reading. For our show, Ivan performs the text titled Duksy River, Disky River, Dusky Rivet. The text-score is followed by an experimental version of Silent Night composed by Ivan in collaboration with Polish-American sound artist Derek Piotr as the first track of a hypothetical Christmas album. The poem was also inspired by Ada Smailbegovic’s essay ‘Cloud Writing: Describing Soft Architecture of Change in the Anthropocene’ where she writes about ephemerality of clouds and says: “Clouds' edges always remain pliable and soft, casting them towards other clouds and the infinite possibilities of mixing and dissolution.”
A conversation with Croatian performance artist Josipa Bubaš and poet/fiction writer Neva Lukić, recorded via Skype in April 2020, at the very start of the Covid19 lockdowns.
The interview took place while I was taking part in Neva and Josipa’s workshop ‘Goosbumps’ which was originally meant to happen offline in Croatia but due to Covid restrictions had to find an alternative way of operating and that alternative was, of course, the zoom.
As we speak of this workshop, we reflect on the transition from the real to the digital and wonder if we are witnessing the birth of a new era. What would be gained and what lost if art and our lives would indeed transition to the digital space, and is there even a way to stop this from happening?
We entertain the idea of lockdowns without Facebook, Instagram, zoom, etc. and question what would Corona look like without technology?

This Artemis Projects podcast is with Croatian multi-media artist Petra Mrša with whom I spoke over Skype, between Sydney and Rijeka, on 30th April 2020 during the Covid19 lock downs.
I was drawn to Petra’s work after coming across her multi-disciplinary propositional works ‘Rehearsing Family’ and ‘What about the body?’ both of which were particularly relevant now that our homes became our universe and the technology took over our bodies in unprecedented ways.
I was interested to talk to Petra, who holds degree in sociology, psychology and photography, about the body in the time of social distancing and online streaming; what direction might art take after the Covid; and how might our relation to nature be affected by it all.

Conversation with Berlin-based visual and performance artist Darko Dragicevic whom i’ve called over Skype to talk about his projects ‘failure in practice’, in which he not only explores our individual and collective relationship to failure within artistic practices, but also the broader cultural and historical definitions of value and success.
This podcast was recorded during Covid19 period of social isolation and physical distancing, a unique historic moment for the art community, and i was interested to speak with Darko about what ‘failure’ might mean to us in this particular context.
Weaved around this topic of failure is mine and Darko’s conversation about difficulty of slowing down and doing nothing; importance of empathy and thinking bigger than our personal needs; a need for art that is inclusive and collaborative and a value of which is not measured by income and finances; and why are we as the society excluding elderly people, their voices and wisdom from our everyday and art practices.

With the controversy of the Miller Point public housing evictions still in the air, a new documentary provides a fly-on-the-wall perspective of life on the Redfern housing estate 57 Lawson. Chronicling the every day lives of public housing tenants it attempts to give us a glimpse of an often misunderstood portion of the population. Stephen Hill spoke to the film’s director Ben Ferris about this experimental documentary.

We met in Belgrade, Serbia to talk about the dance video XX filmed through her collaboration with German sound artist and filmmaker Thea Soti.

This Artemis Projects podcast is with Swedish artist Fanny Hellgren whom I called over Skype to talk about her series of works 'Withering Postures' exhibited at the Nevven gallery in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Made of paper-pulps and transformed into a large-scale wall-tapestries, 'Withering Postures' bring attention to commonly discarded materials, making us rethink what can be of value and what can be beautiful.
Always left in the state of changeability and often in the state of impermanence, Hellgren’s works bring attention to time, pointing to the fragility of all matter and reminding us, the viewers, of our own materiality.
In this podcast, Hellgren talks about the inspiration behind her working methodology, the question of archiving the impermanent works, concept of alchemy, and how she tries to defy the rules of gravity.
We also address Oscar Wild’s statement that “all art is quite useless” and Agnes Martin’s that “Art is the concrete representation of our most subtle feelings.”

For the 5th edition of the ADSR zine (@adsrzine), I wrote a piece on 'in-between' spaces in art practice, when one idea is completed and the new one only yet to be born. The writing was inspired by my conversation with Sydney-based artist Lux Eterna and this is a sound collage extracted from the larger interview and carried by sound design of Trevor Brown who engaged with the theme in terms of space, its fulness and emptiness.

In this episode of DANCE CINEMA we speak to Australian artist Lux Eterna about her butoh and bodyweather inspired dance film AURA NOX ANIMA shot in the dunes of Anna Bay in Port Stephens, Australia.
Through the use of slow pace and wide shots, AURA NOX ANIMA brings us back to our bodies, reawakens the awareness of our susceptivity to the natural order, and encourages contemplation of the cyclical nature of life where decay and renewal superimpose to create a liminal place of passage into something yet foreign and new.

In this episode of DANCE CINEMA we speak to Slovenia film director and editor, Sašo Podgoršek who together with world-renowned choreographer Iztok Kovač created a stunning dance film "Vašhava", performed by the international dance company EnKnapGroup.
Divided in three sequences, "Vašhava" starts with François Truffaut inspired scene, more precisely his Fahrenheit 451 movie where government forbids reading of books. We finish with a melancholic farewell scene, the filmmakers' homage to the industrial town Trbolje which was undergoing radical transformation as the film was being shot.

In this episode of DANCE CINEMA we speak to Anja Dimitrijevic, Belgrade-born and Venice-based theatre and film maker whose dance video VALLE DELLE SFINGI was inspired by the mystical zoomorphic rocks discovered in the northern part of Italy.
In this podcast Anja speaks about how these zoomorphic rocks inspired the choreography, how the choice of sound communicated the idea of extension of time and why, although she comes from a theatre background, she finds interest in non-narrative structures that privilege abstraction and intuitive level of perception, drawing inspiration from theatre maker Robert Wilson who says: “I don’t want to tell stories but draw stories.”

In this episode of DANCE CINEMA we speak to Laura Cappellesso, editor of dance film MARMO, shot in Tuscany and inspired by the vision of Italian sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti.
Envisioned and directed by Nancy Allison and with choreography of Laura Boato, MARMO contemplates the emergence of a work of art out of a raw material such as a block of stone, or in the case of a film, out of many hours of film rushes each having a numberless creative paths one could follow.
In this podcast, MARMO’s editor Laura Cappellesso takes us through the journey of making the film as we consider the similarity between sculpting and editing and the idea of ‘setting the work of art free’.
Laura also speaks about her approach to to haptic visuality and why she felt it necessary to emphasise polarities between matter and spirit - solidity of marble and fluidity of moving bodies.

An interview on the run… recorded straight after Mila's Fotopub festival performance Rocking Chairs, in a 15 minutes gap before her transport from Novo Mesto back to Berlin.
We briefly speak about the key aspects of her practice through which she explores status symbols and aspirations for ‘better life’ with the focus on diaspora and issue of integration.
We speak about her work We have a wonderful life, a multimedia project consisting of a six- channel video installation and photographs sent to her family by relatives that moved to Australia in the late 90’s.
We also speak about her work Tante aus Deutschland (Aunt from Germany) which she made with her aunts who live in Germany since 1993 to expose the issue of integration in the new culture and to deconstruct the image of wonderful life.

Goran Rister was one of the group of young artists who in June 2015 came across an abandoned building in the central Belgrade. It turned out that the building was a former workshop for the repairing of the music instruments of SFRJ army orchestra. Left to rot, the building was a treasure trove of historical objects and documents, an archive that Rister turned into a Kvaka museum, a place for reflection on the relation to the cultural heritage, what we choose to keep, what to discard.
"Kvaka 22" is also an artist run space dedicated to innovative and experimental art practices, international collaboration and general support for young artists and curators. It hosts exhibitions, concerts, performances, film screenings, talks, residencies, and more.

Marija Bjekic's work explores and references the 20th century utopias, the position of working class, and the architectural structures that govern the behaviour, until they collapse.
We met to discuss her hyperrealist drawings combined with the geometric, almost grid like forms inspired by Russian Constructivism and Bauhaus.
"This forms are in very sensitive fragile uncertain balance. Human figures are balancing on them, or holding them, or building from them."

David Pujado is from Barcelona but fell in love with Belgrade, its brutalist architecture and creative vibe, and made it his home. Here he opened a small photography dedicated gallery, then started the Serbia's first international photography festival, Belgrade Photo Month.
I set with him at KC Magacin to talk about how it all started, what type of photography he personally likes, what other art forms inspire him, and what is the role of silence in his art and life.

Met in Belgrade with Dejan Golic, one of the members of Belgrade RAW to talk about the beginnings of the collective as they celebrate ten years of their existence.
The collective was founded in 2009 by five photographers who found each other on Flicker and agreed that there was a lack of real, raw footage of their city.
Now in their 10th year, they count eleven members and have two books under their arms.
So what has Belgrade RAW meant for those involved and how did it influence Serbian photographic scene, hear in my interview with Dejan.
