A meditation master once said if you wear the same clothes every day, eventually, you'll begin to recognize yourself. If you practice Proprioceptive Writing every day, eventually, you'll begin to hear yourself. Trust yourself; you're on the right path. And remember the magic rules for self-trust: Write what you hear, listen to what you write, and be ready to ask the Proprioceptive Question.

Writing the Mind Alive

Looking back over the last decade, I can see more clearly how the divine discontent I felt wasn't a sign that something was wrong with me or my life, but instead was simply a signal of my growth and potential pulling me forward.

I’ve also realized that finding ourselves, recognizing ourselves, and trusting ourselves is something we learn to do. But we have to stop thinking and begin doing.

Practice over time helps us learn and unlearn—continuous and repeated practice, allowing the methods you choose to vary over time.

In 2017 I became curious about the Proprioceptive Writing method, but I didn’t establish a practice. Over the last few months, it's become clear that this practice is the framework for our next learning journey in Within (U)niveristy.

If you’re seeking ritual, wanting to cultivate a Wisdom Rhythm, develop a contemplative practice and connect and learn with others, this experience may be for you.

Our first gathering will be on February 22nd at 7:30 CST, followed by weekly community writes every Tuesday until Holy Week. It’s my bridge from Winter to Spring and a practice I’m looking forward to accompanying me through Lent.

Please join me in Within (U)niversity or reach out to apply for a scholarship if this resonates with you.

Suppose you’d rather dip into the method on your own? In that case, I recommend the book Writing the Mind Alive: The Proprioceptive Method for Finding Your Authentic Voice by Linda Trichter Metcalf and Tobin Simon.

May you be well in all ways,

Vivi

Today’s show explores the concepts of fantasy AND reality, certainty AND paradox, now AND what’s next, alone AND together, etc. You get the picture. We can be in neither AND both at the same time. Let’s dive into these ideas together!

Shaina Barnholt is an Energy Mentor, Self Exploration Coach, and Shadow Advocate who describes herself as a “weirdo.” She loves holding safe spaces for others to explore their darker sides and live out their dreams. To sum it up, she is an advocate for self-love who helps people find and free their blocks and blindspots.

Show Highlights:

  • Why the concept of moving into something while moving out of something else is difficult to understand
  • How the pandemic craziness has led us to question our truth in the middle of the “system” we know
  • Why it’s not our fault that we are human and built in certain ways
  • Why we are taught to think more about what others think than what we think of ourselves
  • How Shaina practices self-love to breathe and find out what she needs
  • Why there are layers to what we need in pausing to ask questions with courage
  • Why “different” is scary and comfort is addicting
  • How growth can happen in tiny steps
  • Why inside change is harder than big outside transitions
  • How your experience can create change and tell you differently than your beliefs
  • Why Shaina’s “perfect” life on paper didn’t feel right, but now it’s the opposite--a terrifying life on paper that feels full and grounded
  • How achievement and happiness may not align for everyone
  • How to create new circles of “your people” by being YOU and loving who you are
  • How leveling up in your own consciousness can move you to a new level with different people
  • Why some relationships, like a broken bone, need to grow apart for a time in order to grow back together better and stronger
  • Key takeaways:
    • Have the courage to ask questions.
    • Give self-love and compassion to yourself.
    • Be patient in today’s microwave culture.
  • How your love, compassion, and forgiveness for yourself allow these qualities to grow in your relationships with others
  • Shaina’s tip: ”Find community and lean on them.”

If you’ve ever traveled the tube in London, you’ll hear an automated voice say, “mind the gap” when the door opens, reminding passengers not to fall into the crevice, that space between the train and the platform.

Today’s special guest, blogger Elizabeth Martin, from mindingthegaps.life, talks with Vivian about the opportunity she had to take a “gap year” many years after getting married and having a family. In her blog, Elizabeth documents these changes in her life as she strives to fully experience them. We are reminded to be careful where we put our feet, so as to avoid the crevices. You may not know where you’re going, but if you’re fully present, then it can become an adventure and a mindful experience, not just another day you can’t remember after rushing through it.

Join Vivian and Elizabeth for tips on how we can more fully value our daily experiences by “minding the gap”.

Today, Vivian and Elizabeth Discuss:

  • The difference between doing and being
  • Family and obligations to our roles as younger women (and younger men) can preclude taking time to be mindful
  • Is this who you want to be, or what you want to do?
  • The transitioning of a role
  • Being open and guided
  • Experiences can become the gifts that you give your family, rather than things
  • The “homeless plan” or home-free plan for a year, became more than that
  • Trying to let go of plans and mastering letting go of the outcomes
  • Setting intentions but not being married to the outcomes
  • The concept of “fallow time” - allowing yourself to just think
  • Learning to sit alone and being comfortable with yourself
  • Practicing things that make us uncomfortable
  • Allowing your adult children to parent their children
  • We go through life and when we reflect, we see it differently
  • What is the practice you’re going to choose?
  • Who sold us Retirement, what the heck is it, and why do I have to buy into it?
  • End of work to end of life - lack of rituals and ceremonies
  • Inspiritus, the Latin word for “breathe”, and its importance for minding the gap
  • Leveling off from management to leadership
  • Letting go of our expectations of how we want our children to turn out
  • Letting go of judgment and accepting people where they are
  • Meditation: meeting your past self and future self
  • Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable
  • Cutting ties to the anchor: are you anchored to the right things?
  • The term “elder” doesn’t mean “old”. The term “elder” means “it’s time to give back”.

Equilibrium and liberation are two of the significant insights that Vivian shares with us, of her own personal journey to wholeness.

Things that might seem simple by outward appearances can actually have deep roots, and it can take some time to navigate your interior life, tapping into what your spirit calls you to, rather than what has been culturally conditioned into your psyche.

Join Vivian as she discusses her year in review, plus dig into some soulful details about “The June Journey of Joy”, the quest for this quarter. Find out how you can train yourself to live a more joyful life.

Today, Vivian Discusses:

  • Tapping into what your heart says
  • Learning to be a part of my culture by reclaiming it
  • Diversity is us being ourselves, together, in a LIVED way
  • Living into the verb of being me
  • The lesson is in your practice
  • Fear gets your attention
  • Not moved by fear, but inspired by joy
  • Being subjective, instead of judgmental
  • Investing some time in identifying where you are right now
  • Training yourself to recognize simple joys in life
  • Moving with the flow, not with the force
  • Our brain has a bias toward the negative, but you can change this
  • Learning to interrupt a pattern
  • Knowing where you rest your attention is important
  • Beauty and wonder is accessible to you, wherever you are
  • Magic ratio of 5:1

Today, we have another heart to heart conversation with Char, Nancy and Vivian! We never know where these conversations are going to take us, but we are always impacted and enriched by the conversation.

Our lives have a format, almost a cadence to them that we don’t always understand. But in the same way that the spaces between music notes are as much a part of the music as the notes are, the punctuation in our lives adds to our stories. Join us as we dig in and see where we will end up.

Show Highlights:

  • Space is important in written word and even in music. With spoken word, we tend to want to fill every space.
  • It isn’t often that we get to have conversations where have the space to think and adapt.
  • All participants of a conversation aren’t always wanting the same thing out of the conversation.
  • The written word allows us to have the opportunity to edit our thoughts and words.
  • When you are with the right people, interruptions can be ok and aren’t always unwelcome.
  • Vivian finds herself grateful for poetry.
  • Char shares the poem, The Time Has Come by Derek Walcott
  • Sometimes our brain needs some distance from memories to be able to reflect on love and be open to the reality that what we think may not always be right.
  • Sometimes we have to direct our brain and re-direct our thought patterns so that we aren’t supporting changes we want to make.
  • An intuitive mind is a sacred gift.
  • We many times aspire to follow our hearts, while getting completely lost in our heads.
  • Why we run from our fears.
  • Vivian shares that the best decisions she has ever made in her life were not a result of her intellect - they were decisions made against all odds.
  • Facts and truth aren’t the same thing.
  • Change doesn’t last forever, but it is worth the discomfort when you get on the other side.
  • All the ladies share a tool from their tool kit to help you stay in touch with your heart and get out of your head.
  • The Guest House by Rumi

Today’s episode is another heart to heart conversation with Nancy and Char. We’re talking about meaning and story, and how our different perspectives affect how we view events. • Giving yourself space to not edit your thoughts or writing can also lead to new perspectives
  • Sometimes you can’t tell a story when you are still in the middle of the story. It takes getting past it to be able to share it.
  • Facts don’t persuade us - the experience, meaning and emotions are what persuade us.
  • Being open to others means realizing that someone else may have something to offer to a conversation.
  • We have to be circumspect about who we allow to teach us.
  • We adopt identities that we don’t always reflect what we think about ourselves.
  • Self-discovery isn’t always easy, but it can be fun and definitely worth it.

It's easy to assume that once you know your purpose and mission in life, that there are few barriers to actually accomplishing your mission. However there are times when, even though you know your mission, for some reason, you can't find your voice to speak the truth of your mission.

In today's episode, I talk about the time this happened to me. It was this past year and I just couldn't even verbalize why I couldn't record a podcast, but I just knew I couldn't. I pulled the plug on the podcast, and was ready to pack it in. When I told my podcast producer, Christy Haussler about this, she sent me an email that I read and re-read again and again. Eventually, I found my voice again. Learn what I did and how I dealt with myself during this difficult time.

Show Highlights:

  • Finding your voice happens over and over again throughout our lives - it's not a one time thing.
  • Why you have to give yourself grace and space when you can't find your voice.
  • How Christy's email helped me give myself room to flounder a bit.
  • Women in particular, are susceptible to losing their voices
  • Where to find support when you don't even understand what is going on with you.
  • Podcasting has been a tool that has given thousands of women a voice AND a platform.
  • Why patience with yourself is critical when you can't find your voice.

Teresa Ott isn’t afraid of the unconventional. When you find yourself questioning “why are we doing what we are doing”? - just because it’s what's expected - it’s time re-evaluate your answers. When she and her husband started questioning why they needed to have a house at all - they began looking for some out of the box ideas. Living in an RV was supposed to be a temporary transition - but after each started second guessing whether the other would “go for it”, they finally reached the point that they were done!

Turning Inward is all about the questioning process and figuring out why you are doing what you are doing and setting your life up to reflect that answers that you want to have to those questions.

Show Highlights:

  • The transition out of the traditional life isn’t easy or quick
  • You can’t put your transition on a calendar and make it happen on schedule.
  • When you do what you are “supposed” to do, it puts you in a perpetual cycle of assimilation.
  • Tribalism wants you to fit in and wants you to be like everyone else - but it isn’t your only alternative.
  • It’s ok not to have everything all figured out. Give yourself the whitespace.
  • In order for creatives to create, you have to give yourself the space to create.
  • If we waited to speak until we had it all figured out, we’d miss so much learning from the doing part of the journey.
  • The more you learn about something, the more you realize you don’t know a fraction of what there is to still learn.
  • You have to find people to support you and believe in what you are doing, but no one else can give you the blueprint for your life.
  • Sometimes your relationships will have to shift to accommodate your transitions.

Steph Lagana - business coach and a spiritual healer. Made a significant move when she decided to leave her career and pursue spiritual healing.

There was a time in Steph’s life when her health was failing and she was in a place where she wasn’t in alignment with her spirit. She knew some changes had to take place and she had a support system of people who believed in her and came to a different conclusion about Steph than she did. They held the vision for what Steph’s life could really be - a life of service that didn’t completely suck every bit of life out of her. Learn how Steph found the courage to transform her life, and how you can do the same.

Show Highlights:

  • Your friends and your inner circle are so important in your life, so choose them wisely.
  • You can learn new things about yourself by going through difficult times.
  • Work can take so much of our lives, that we don’t have anything left over for us.
  • We don’t really wake up, many times we wake down.
  • Always serve from your overflow. Otherwise, you become resentful.
  • “What’s else is going on right now?” Use this question as a tool for self-awareness.
  • If your world is falling apart, find a world that is creating for you.
  • Your journal is a great space for you. Any place devoid of productivity is a good space.
  • Our conscious awareness is only 2% of what we can see. Our sub-conscious is 98%.
  • Don’t dismiss your own intuition.
  • Einstein time - scarcity of time is a figment and it doesn’t serve you.
  • Notice the thoughts you are repeating to yourself - do those serve you?
  • Your answers rest in that place of slowing down.

If you need a pep talk, stay tuned to the very end of this episode and be affirmed that you are going to be ok. You can’t even imagine what the future holds for you and it will all work out and be ok - if you will allow yourself the space to come into alignment with your true desires.

The foundational principle of almost all religions is love. To love ourselves and love each other seems to be at the core of what connects us to the Divine. Organized religion has historically not been tolerant of a person attempting to find their own path to Source. Today’s show is a conversation with Nancy Guerrera about the walk through the journey of determining the distinction between religion, spirituality and what’s right for each person.

Vivian has come to appreciate mysticism for many reasons. Although Vivian doesn’t use her Catholic religion as a talking point in the show, she’s been able to find a way to allow both religion and spirituality to co-exist in a symbiotic way in her head and heart. It’s rare to have a discussion on spirituality that isn’t filled with dogma and demands, and this discussion is about giving each of us the freedom to find our own spiritual path - because we know that spirituality is a personal journey whose destination is love, but the path to love will vary from person to person.

Show Highlights:

  • The concept of metanoia - change in one's way of life resulting from penitence or spiritual conversion.
  • Metanoia is the Greek origin of Jesus’ first teachings - changing your mind - translated into English as repent, but that isn’t what it means at all.
  • We go through a new birth 5 or 6 times in our lifetimes.
  • The tension around “am I doing something against my faith” by exploring mysticism and other spirituality practices.
  • The disconnection between the head and the heart can be a barrier to spirituality
  • There is a difference between spirituality and the religion that is practiced.
  • Looking at the differences between the historical version of religion and the cultural practice of spirituality can help ease the tension you may feel between the two.
  • There is truth in all religions across all time.
  • Being open to different types of spiritual experiences allows you to use all the tools available to you
  • There are more similarities between different religions than many would have you believe.
  • You can receive a sense of belonging from your spiritual practice.
  • Each person will have their own spiritual journey, and to try and force one set journey on everyone actually strips away the freedom that spirituality affords.
  • Looking at spirituality through child-like eyes can help you see things clearly.
  • Original sin vs. original design
  • Sin is a lack of a holistic approach in paying attention to your own thoughts and feelings about your spiritual path.
  • People don’t relate to religion because it doesn’t naturally feels intuitive, magical or self-empowering.
  • The shame surrounding religious traditions will rob you of the joy of your self-discovery.
  • Mysticism is about the experiential knowledge - the drawing out from within.
  • Balance or harmony - you need to be free to find your own “song”
  • Art as a spiritual practice? Have you ever considered the gravity of elevating art to that level?

Have you ever asked yourself if there's a better way to live? Have you ever wondered if you could be better? Do better? If you have, then Vivian has a hunch that you're ready to wake up and change. Listen in to find out why she thinks so and what you can do to assist the process.

This episode is a conversation with you, to give you a nudge and find out if you're ready to wake up and begin the process of transforming yourself. Vivian explains that the reason for wondering about a better way to live is because the act of bringing something into your awareness, allows for a choice, or a change. It's a way for you to become aware and design a different way for yourself and you already have everything you need, in order to do that. She points out that you can't avoid pain in your life, however, it is within your control to lessen your suffering. Listen in as Vivian explains how you can use your attention to change your brain so that you can begin to wake up and see things more clearly.

Today, Vivian discusses:

  • That the thread throughout this episode is whether you're above or below the line.
  • A visual aid to help you help you to find out whether you're above or below the line and what it means.
  • What Twenty-First Century Training is all about.
  • That wherever you rest your attention, you're going to take in information.
  • Becoming aware of where you place your attention because it shapes who you are.
  • Why you need to pause before you take action.
  • Accessing the part of your brain where all the juice of life is- in the pre-frontal cortex.
  • Creating a choice for yourself, above the line.
  • What expanded awareness (above the line) looks like.
  • An explanation of Michael Beckwith, of the Agape International Spiritual Centre's model of the template on the evolution of our consciousness, or the different ways of being.
  • How you can bring more awareness to your natural wiring.
  • Books that Vivian recommends, by Dr. Dan Siegel, about using your awareness to change your brain.

Today's show is inspired by one of Vivian's favorite mystics, Anthony de Mello. His last book, The Last Meditations of Anthony de Mello, The Way To Love, is a book that she keeps very close at hand and refers to often, as she resonates so closely with his writings. Listen to today's show and learn how to really love and accept yourself and develop your awareness, through the teachings of Anthony de Mello.

Vivian explains that the premise of his writing is that love springs from awareness- and awareness is really her thing! She points out that in order for us to truly begin to love, we have to awaken that awareness and it's really not that easy. In fact, it's painful - as de Mello says, “The most painful act is the act of seeing, but in that act of seeing, love is born.” Vivian explains that most of us are really not content to be ourselves because we are programmed from birth to be dissatisfied- or to be anything other than what we really are! She points out that any change that you make is always accompanied by inner conflict. She talks about how people suffer from seeing the achievements of others that they believe not to be possible for themselves. She also talks about how difficult it is for most people to be kind to themselves and what a challenge it is for people to simply accept who they are. Listen in today, as Vivian shares more of her wisdom, as inspired by the mystical writing of Anthony de Mello.

Today, Vivian discusses:

  • Why most people really tend to disregard their own gifts.
  • The Way of Self-Understanding.
  • Why everything that she does is around awakening and awareness.
  • Observing and studying yourself, without judgment, rather than trying to change yourself.
  • What will happen to you from observing yourself, rather than trying to change?
  • What happens to people, as a result of the transforming light of awareness.
  • The difference between ego violence and nature violence.
  • The amazing effect of awareness on your neurological system.
  • Why you need to notice what enlivens you and really brings you to life.
  • Noticing where your life becomes drained from you.
  • Risking failure and really not knowing.
  • Chiseling away at the layers that cover your soul.
  • How you can touch your own heart- be still, wait patiently and watch closely.
  • Allow the discomfort- don't push it away and wait patiently.

Vivian is back on the show, after several months sabbatical. She naturally follows the Texas Two Step process, in that she tends to withdraw at times because she's leveling up. Join Vivian today, as she starts out with a little freestyle, for you to get to know her again.

Today, Vivian explains what caused her to withdraw this time and she talks about the different formats that she's gone through with this show, since starting out, years ago. She says that although she finds that the deepest fulfillment and meaning for her, come from working with people one on one, she's still committed to her promise to continue to show up on the podcast. She feels good about the transformation that's gone on over the last number of years, since she was downloaded with the set of instructions to love being human and she used this podcast as a way to turn around and offer these instructions to you, as well. Listen in today, as Vivian shares what she knows in her knowing and returns to the show, to hand the tools over.

Today, Vivian talks about:

  • How she retreated from her instructions, after being hit by a car in 2013. Not her highest choice.
  • That her work is about growing in awareness.
  • That noticing, naming and nurturing allows things to fall away without effort.
  • What happens as you grow in confidence and courage and develop your skills of awareness.
  • Why this podcast is called Turning Inward.
  • Who she serves.
  • That turning your focus inward sharpens your saw.
  • That you don't have to be religious, but you do need to have faith.
  • Being grounded in your own values and turning towards love.
  • What she does, for the most part, through maintaining a Spiritual Practice.
  • That she will help you in developing your own, personal Spiritual Practice.
  • Moving slow and steady in working out what is really for the greater good.
  • Developing a Spiritual Practice, as a Modern Mystic.
  • That she works with people all around the world.

Do you realize that you're actually much smarter than you think you are? Would you like to find out why, or how you can come to see that for yourself? Then join Vivian today and learn about how you can go about raising your awareness and developing your insight.

Today, Vivian talks about the Five Day Experience that she hosted in January and has now made available for you on her website. She describes it as a slow drip of daily insight to bring awareness to the fact that you're smarter than you think you are. She discusses what she leads you through in it and that the core intention is not one of self-help because you're not broken. She also discusses how, after a transformational process, people have a tendency to go back to logic and looking for facts, like trying to figure out a maths problem- and that's just not the way that it works. So, slow down, listen in and learn about how you can tap into your own inner wisdom, by becoming aware of what's going on in and around you. You're going to love this show!

Today, Vivian talks about:

  • A relevant and beautiful speech by David Foster Wallace, that she shares a part of with you today.
  • How we all tend to get lost in the intellect.
  • Her own recent transformation and how she found herself looking for the logic in it- knowing that that it wasn't going to serve her.
  • That you need to keep reminding yourself to pay attention to what's right in front of you and to what's going on inside of you.
  • That her Five Day Experience is not about self-help, it's training and insight that will take you through.
  • That she got the name 'You're Smarter Than You're Thinking' from Winnie The Pooh.
  • She goes through what she teaches on each day, in her You're Smarter Than You're Thinking Five Day Experience.

If you're looking for the right kind of inspiration to become all that you can be, without holding back, join Vivian today, as she encourages you to lean into the best within you and let all your actions come from a place of love and peace.

Today, Vivian ponders something that came up twice in her recent dreams- twins. After the second dream, she understood that it was telling her that two things can both be true at the same time. Today she talks about how we often make a choice, choosing one thing and disregarding the other, without considering that both could be appropriate. She talks about how healthy it is to have love as the motivation for all your actions and reminds you that no matter how big you can dream, the potential for what you can actually do is even bigger than that... but you have to be open to it, to let it happen. She also points out that it's possible for you to do your very best, and yet accept that the outcome is outside of your control. Join Vivian today and discover so much more within yourself than you have ever believed possible.

Today, Vivian talks about:

  • How difficult it was for her to accept the idea that she deserves what she has and that she deserves even more.
  • The inspiration she got from a conference she attended over the weekend.
  • The question she asked herself: “Can I be all of me? Will that be okay?”
  • Her fundamental belief that God is love.
  • Her teachings revolving around kindness and love and taking inspired action.
  • Opening yourself to receive more than you already have.
  • Letting your actions spring from love and peace.
  • Any action done in love is spiritual.
  • Her definition of fear.
  • How fear depletes your resources.
  • A Cognitive Behaviour Therapy model which aligns with love being human.

Live your Truth from the Inside out

This short episode is an update on my message and methodology intended to help you imagine a new way to lead & live.

Question what you're thinking to get to your inner knowing.

Awareness isn't learning something new it's letting go of what doesn't serve your greatest good.

Choose to move in the direction of love.

Human - Where am I? What do I need?

Being - The state of your doing. Your personal spiritual practice.

Love - Not what it is, but what you know it isn't

You’re in the right place if you’re open to seeing things a bit differently and also experiencing life fully through all your senses, especially your intuition. Sarah and I will walk you through an audio experience of Martha Beck’s Finding Your Way in a Wild New World: Reclaim Your True Nature to Create The Life you Want.

I believe that our new revolution is Evolution. You can create your wild new world; we’ll show you how to begin. The future of our work provides daily meaning. We can work with a greater sense of purpose.

So reduce the head noise, get some space and resonate instead.

We’ll be with you the entire ride.

Wishing you well now and all ways,

Vivian

Week 12: Chapters 14 & 15

In the final call of this audio course, we reflect on a very important concept: how helping yourself helps others. From there we discuss an array of topics from the infinity loop of rest and play, empowerment and meaning making to finally discuss the importance of community and connection in the process of healing.

This chapter, and entire book for that matter, shows how being authentically you is essential to your happiness and work in the world. Bringing our complete, true identity into the world is shifting from a luxury to a form of survival. Being the real you in each part of your life—work, home, social circles etc.—will no longer consists of distinct roles or personas. What this also helps us see more and more each day is that it’s not just survival, but one of the best ways to live. If that’s not awesome, I don’t know what is!

Although this concludes the audio course and book club, we’d like to invite you to consider never-ending reciprocity.

Allow yourself to daydream about the possibilities of what can come from helping yourself. In what easy way can you do this for yourself today? Maybe you could even give it a try…

We look forward to continuing to connect, share and support you within and between, Teammate.

Xx,

Sarah

Week 11: Chapter 13

Forming Your Art, Mending Yourself is the focus of today’s conversation. We discuss the different ways we naturally mend ourselves and the roles they play in what we have to offer to the world. In this chapter, Martha outlines ways to explore this and we do so together in the recording.

Current events that are often shown on the evening news and social media depict depressing scenes of conflict. And while it is true that there are many suffering in this day and age, we are also living in an era of great opportunity. Today’s conversation may ignite gratitude and appreciation for being a part of this global transformation.

If you haven’t already, complete the list Martha provides regarding the 10,000 hours of deep practice on page 240. If you are having a difficult time coming up with ideas, go back to a hot track. When was the last time you found yourself truly immersed and enjoying the present moment? What were you doing then? Who were you with?

Week 10: Chapter 12

Forming is what it’s all about in this recording. We discuss the key factors necessary to form and I do a bit of coaching with Vivian to set some intentional forming in motion.

Paradox finds its way back in today as we explore the irony of letting your attachment to something go as a founding principle to forming what you desire. On the other hand, it makes complete sense when you look at things that already function this way, like planting a seed and letting the flower bloom.

Give yourself a moment to follow along with the forming coaching in today’s call or walk yourself through it. Release it---drop your resistance--let it go.

After, maybe have yourself a jam session with the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0MK7qz13bU

…we dare you! :P

Sarah

Vivian

Week 9: Chapter 11

In this recording we venture towards the theme of the hero’s call to adventure and explore ways to move towards love instead of away from fear.

Connect the things that want to connect through you. This is part of our purpose. We create new connections that haven’t already existed, and will continue in non-existence without us. Kiiiind of powerful, if I do say so myself!

Reflect upon your life and where you are now. Can you recognize specific times when you were called to adventure to live out the hero’s saga? Did you allow yourself to be broken open? What’s the resistance? What’s the goodness that can come from answering the call? Perhaps it’s time to get that journal out again.

Week 8: Chapter 10

On today’s call we jump into metaphors and more puzzle cracking. This leads us to examining purpose, employment, what that looks like in the world today and the metamorphosis the traditional models are experiencing.

The new way of doing is bringing your attention to the presence of being. If you are stuck, find natural rhythm and movement. Go for a walk or watch the rain fall, connect with that and observe what happens.

Week 7: Chapter 9

In today’s recording we continue discussing imagination, but with respect to suffering, our problems and how imagination helps us solve them. We also chat about science and its credibility related to imagination and Vivian does a bit of impromptu coaching.

Martha Beck often says it’s best to think like a dog. When you find yourself with a problem, first determine if a dog would perceive this same situation as a problem. If so, and it’s clear what a dog would do…do that. Otherwise, walk yourself through the four steps so that you can clear up the physical problem. If not, enjoy.

Week 6: Chapter 8

We’ve reached the imagination station. Vivian shares one of her experiences with us and why imagination is such a dominant player in her life.

A recording or two ago we lightly touched on the power that lies in potential. Today Vivian does a beautiful job illustrating that moment when she recognized and acknowledged potential in the moment after coming out of the bathroom and choosing to do what she wanted to do instead of living out the usual pattern. I love how something so powerful can be as simple as that!

We challenge you once a day to find space to recognize potential before a decision is made or acted out. What does it feel like? Become aware of it so that you can access it more readily.

Week 5: Chapters 6 & 7

In this recording we take on two chapters each dealing with relationships; those created out of connection with our furry friends and others not so furry. Who better to help us with that than Disney/Pixar’s 101 Dalmatians, The Little Mermaid and Inside Out? We also take a look at where we are placing our attention and Vivian helps us get a bit more hands on with some experiential learning exercises and techniques. Things even get a bit weird between Vivian and me when discussing liberation, leadership and listening. We keep it real!

We invite you to pay attention to your focus. Do you know where it is or why it is there? Once you’ve found it, try placing it on your inside self. Notice where your attention really wants to go. If you notice a funky-shaped leaf on your way out the door from work or a brightly colored candy package in the check-out line has caught your attention, perhaps you can give yourself a minute to check it out.

Are you allowing yourself to feel the wisdom you’ve been trying to teach yourself?

Week 4: Chapters 4 & 5

We transition from the topic of worldlessness to oneness in this recording. Martha explains that ‘Wordlessness is presence in the magical realm; Oneness is connection and communication through it.’ We also recognize our body as a tool for communication and play around with body dowsing.

Play around with the spoon bending and try body dowsing a couple of times. If this seems a bit too far out there, can you allow yourself to pause your disbelief? If not, how come? Have fun with it and get curious.

Week 3: Chapters 2 & 3

We dive right into ‘sense drenching’ today! Together we continue to discover the influence awakening our senses and training our focus has on our everyday experience. Vivian and I also introduce you to one of our fun phrases and dabble in the world of paradox.

Vivian mentions her awareness of an increase in choice and response and touches on the common response of ‘either/or’ whereas ‘yes/and’ is also an option. This triggers me to pay attention to where I only recognized ‘either/or’ when ‘yes/and’ was available to me.

Play with some of the koans Martha provides on pages 43 & 44, or find some examples of your own. Take time to contemplate them and observe what happens.

Find Your Truth, Week 2: Chapter 1

Today’s conversation focuses on Martha’s concept of wordlessness. We chat about being, doing and the difference between the two. These ideas may sometimes feel a bit abstract, so we also share a few of our practical experiences with them.

As it is mentioned in the recording, wordlessness doesn’t have to be this lofty meditation practice or routine where thoughts are absent.

In what ways do you already find yourself naturally dropping into wordlessness? Are there any, if even for a couple of seconds? Take note of the situations you find yourself in or what you are doing when you are able to ‘go there’.

11:00 Using Love_being_Human as a tool

13:35 Living in the present

Vivian’s 50 words she was asked to write when she was preparing to cross the stage to accept her Doctorate in May 2009:

As I make my way across this stage, taking the final steps towards this commencement, I celebrate this journey as I begin another but I also pause and turn towards you as I reverently bow in gratitude grateful for your confidence and thankful for your love and friendship and also hopeful that when history writes my story, as I cross that great stage called life it notes that I have achieved success. Success in my devotion to my family, working with my community and to improving the lives of others.

18:00 Transcript and Video of Full Commencement Address by Jim Carrey

"But even with that, comes a feeling of divine dissatisfaction. Because ultimately, we’re not the avatars we create. We’re not the pictures on the film stock. We are the light that shines through it. All else is just smoke and mirrors. Distracting, but not truly compelling.

I’ve often said that I wished people could realize all their dreams of wealth and fame so they could see that it’s not where you’ll find your sense of completion."
