Back from their hiatus, Lion Around hosts Gina Geliche and Monica Freeman are finishing off their year with the send-off episode. Recorded where graduation takes place, the Paavo Nurmi Center, Freeman and Geliche recall what they have learned throughout their collegiate career. Experience is the best teacherOne of the first points that Freeman and Geliche make, they knew prior to their time at FinnU.  However, Freeman stated that through her experiences in college, the idea of “experience is the best teacher” has stood out to her, especially in her last two years. Don’t be afraid to be ambitiousFreeman and Geliche expanded upon this point in different contexts. Mentioning some of the opportunities available to students at FinnU, Freeman reminisced about applying for her internship and for the Paloheimo Fellowship. Geliche applied the point to fashion and talked about the time she chose to wear a tutu to her welding class. Either way, Freeman and Geliche encourage students to chase after their dreams.Realize that adults are also “winging it”Both hosts admitted that there have been moments in college where they had no idea what was happening or what to do in certain situations. Geliche brought up job searching and discussed her attendance at the Adulting 101 workshops were a reassurance that she was on the right track. Take time for yourselfMental health is important. Freeman and Geliche highly encourage taking time out of your day to relax. Naps are a vital aspect of Freeman’s and Geliche’s personal mental health care regime. The hosts suggest taking naps during college because you may not be able to enjoy them outside of college. Be active on campusAttending campus events adds to one’s college experience. A consistent attendant to college events, Geliche mentioned attending college events allows her to interact with other majors and community members whom she enjoys meeting. Explore the areaGoing off the idea of community, Freeman and Geliche suggest that students explore the area. Living in a scenic area, there are many opportunities to explore if students are willing to be adventurous.  Take a class that makes you thinkFreeman believes that students should take classes that make them think outside of the box. Using her freshmen philosophy class as an example, Freeman stated that was intimidated to take the class but, in the end, enjoyed the content and the teacher so much that she ended up taking another philosophy class with the same teacher. Geliche added onto that saying that she loved her speech class, because the class was consistently engaging. “Give the course a chance,” remarked Geliche, you never know when you are going to stumble upon something you enjoy. Build a relationship with your parents/ have a support systemRelationships with parents change after high school. While they may not do your laundry anymore, parents are a good support system to have and are your “spiritual guides into adulthood.” Having a support system outside of your parents is vital as well, in Freeman’s opinion, because it is another outlet to reach out to in times of distress.Winding down, Freeman and Geliche stated their gratitude for receiving the opportunity to host Lion Around. If anyone would like to connect with the hosts, LinkedIn connections are highly encouraged.

Monica Freeman and Gina Geliche are back this week with a new episode of Lion Around. Recording on the Finlandia Fridays set, the co-hosts are joined by Haley Makela and Samantha Richards. Makela, a senior marketing major from Atlantic Mine, was featured on the “What Does Your Major Do” episode earlier this semester. Richards is a senior accounting major from Dollar Bay. Geliche, Freeman and Makela will all graduate in the spring, while Richards will graduate in December. With graduation in the near future for all of the students, they chose to talk about LinkedIn.

All four students have LinkedIn accounts, Makela and Geliche having their accounts for the most time. Freeman made her's within the past year, and Richards within the past month. With LinkedIn being an important tool for students and professionals in the workforce, here are some tips on how to use LinkedIn from students who have a vague idea of how to use the app.

SIX TIPS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS USING LINKEDIN CREATE A PROFILE Tip one from the students is to create a LinkedIn profile, if you have not done so already. LinkedIn is an easy way for potential employers to find job prospects. With a LinkedIn profile, one can also look and apply for jobs, while building their network of connections. Profiles are important to have if you are graduating or looking to get a job, whether it is part-time or full-time.

REMEMBER YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNT AND KEEP IT CURRENT For tip two, Geliche stressed remembering you actually have an account. The account should be updated often, so the information on the account is current. Whether or not someone uses LinkedIn to its full potential, it is an important tool to have. Remembering that you have an account and using it every once in a while, can be beneficial to current and future employers.

USE A PROFESSIONAL PORTRAIT Tip three is have a professional portrait for your profile. For Finlandia students, FinnU has a portrait session every semester for students who need or would like a professional portrait. LinkedIn users can also add cover photos to their profiles. Makela’s cover photo is a basketball court, because she would like to get a job in sports. While a cover photo is not necessarily needed, the group decided that the cover photo should reflect what you are interested in. LinkedIn will also inform you how your profile ranks and what should be added to improve it.

BUILD UP YOUR PROFILE WITH EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS Tip four add your past and current job experiences. Good profiles have up-to-date information on them. With job experiences, users should also post any skills and volunteer work. LinkedIn also allows users to upload media to their profiles. Freeman, for example, has her resume posted on her account. Makela suggested to Geliche that she should share her portfolio on her profile.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR ENDORSEMENTS The group also suggested to ask for endorsements. Employers and co-workers can comment on a user’s profile by endorsing the skills they listed on their profile. Along with endorsements, recommendations can be added to profiles as well.

NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK Networking is an important aspect of LinkedIn. Building your network is staple to the app, as it is in the workforce. The group recommends continually building your network. Makela and Freeman can attest that networking has helped them open doors in the past.

Makela, Geliche, Richards and Freeman hope these tips were helpful to those who needed help with LinkedIn. For those who don’t need help, keep connecting and don’t forget your password!

Most people will admit that dating is hard, and dating in college is even harder, at least for some. Nowadays, dating apps are prevalent in college dating culture. Resident single ladies and hosts Monica Freeman and Gina Geliche decided to see if dating apps were truly worth the hype by creating profiles.

Freeman starts the podcast off by mentioning how the idea initially came about. After recording the previous episode, Freeman and Geliche were discussing what the next podcast should be about. Mistaking the dates, Freeman said the next episode would go out around Valentine’s Day and jokingly said that the two should talk about their non-existent love lives.  Long story short, the idea stuck and resulted in the current episode.

For the episode, Freeman and Geliche both downloaded two dating apps. Both hosts downloaded Tinder, currently the most popular dating app, and then the dating app of their choice. Geliche chose Bumble as her second app, while Freeman downloaded the app Hinge.

Creating the Tinder accounts first, Freeman and Geliche had to sign up for an account and add in some basic information. Information that was needed included gender, sexual orientation, school and age. Accounts are not complete until at least one picture is added. After pictures are uploaded, users are ready to start swiping. For those unfamiliar with the app, Tinder finds potential dates within a specified radius. If users are interested in someone, they swipe right on a profile. If they are dis-interested, users swipe left. Profile can include several pictures and even a bio, where users can share their thoughts about what they are looking for.

After creating the Tinder profiles and getting the hang of the app, Freeman and Geliche moved onto their second apps. Creating her Bumble profile, Geliche learned that Bumble can be used for more than just dating and can be used to find friends or to network. Freeman and Geliche both noticed that their second profiles took considerably more time to create than their Tinder profiles. Both hosts had to fill out actual prompts to create their profiles, with the prompts appearing on their profiles.

With the profiles created, the hosts compared the processes of creating profiles for their different apps. The hosts admitted that their second profiles took longer to make, asking more in-depth questions like political and religious stances. The second apps, while similar to Tinder with liking and looking at pictures, offer more information when choosing potential dates. Freeman stated that on Hinge, to create the profile, three prompts have to be chosen and answered before the profile can be created.

While Freeman and Geliche continue to look for their soulmates, check out previous episodes of Lion Around as well as the rest of the podcasts created by the Finlandia Podcast Network in the links below.

Hosts Gina Geliche and Monica Freeman are asking the serious questions in this week’s episode of Lion Around. Recorded in Maki Library, Geliche and Freeman collected a few guests to see what they think various majors do in their school work. This episode is brought to you by the person who referred to art school as “crayon college.” Geliche stated that she has heard the term before and that people tend to assume that art majors color all day for their degree. Wanting to challenge this perception, Geliche came up with the idea to ask students in other degree programs “what do you think my major does?”

Accompanying the hosts are students Haley Makela and Lane Brown. Makela is a senior marketing major. Also a captain on the women’s basketball team, goalie for women’s soccer, vice president of student senate, member of Alpha Lambda Delta, and employee of the bookstore.  Brown is a sophomore who was formerly studying nursing but is now studying for a degree in criminal justice (CJ). He is also a member of the baseball team. As a friendly reminder for the listeners, Freeman and Geliche also stated their majors. Geliche is earning a degree is fiber arts with a minor in Finnish studies, and Freeman is working towards a business degree in marketing and graphic design.

Kicking off the discussion, Geliche admitted that when she thinks of Makela’s major, she imagines Makela using an old school calculator and doing a lot of math. Makela corrected Geliche stating that while she has taken an introductory math class and two semesters of accounting, business majors tend to do a lot of writing. Brown also chimed in saying that he also writes consistently for his degree.

Turning to criminal justice, Makela described the degree as reading pieces, summarizing the pieces and then writing about the pieces. Freeman assisted in this description by saying not all CJ majors go to the police academy. Brown supported Makela’s statement by stating that someone once described his degree as a “backup English major.” What Freeman stated was also correct, CJ majors can go into the police academy as a career path, but they can also go in the federal sector or go to law school.

Brown then tried to describe Geliche’s major. Between Makela and Brown, the common consensus was Geliche makes clothes and knits for her degree. While the two were not far off, Geliche agreed that she does sew and knit, but she hates sewing. Geliche enjoys weaving, and does a lot of computer work to create different pieces.

Rounding out the conversation, the group discussed Freeman’s degree, primarily focusing on the graphics aspect. Makela described graphic design as hanging out with professor Tom Adolphs and being frustrated when Adobe products don’t work correctly, while also bringing in the business aspect of what color will make people notice this piece. Brown assisted with description by adding that Freeman has to decide what layout works the best and is the most eye-catching. Freeman agreed with the description, and added onto it mentioning that with her degree she can go out and assist small businesses since she has the “best of both worlds.”

Back for their last semester, hosts Monica Freeman and Gina Geliche hit off the first Lion Around of 2019 talking about… well their last semester and what that all entails. Recording in Old Main, where Freeman and Geliche’s Finlandia stories started, the hosts recount their hopes and fears of their last semester.

Facing her last semester, Freeman stated that many people have asked if she is graduating in the spring, which is typically followed by what her next steps are after graduation. Freeman and Geliche both agreed that while the thought of their last semester is exciting, it is also intimidating not knowing where their lives will be come May. Geliche stated that she has been receiving the “are you graduating this year?” question for the past three years.

With the semester already in swing, Freeman and Geliche discuss the difficulties and horrors of looking for jobs. A daunting task for anyone, Geliche talked about the need for experience and specific skills to apply for jobs and how some jobs may train you on the job, but there is always the concern of whether or not the trainee will be getting paid during training. Freeman is hoping that her internship within the marketing and communications department will help her land a job instead of landing another internship. The duo also talked about their previous jobs, with Geliche gaining work experience by working several different jobs on campus and babysitting throughout high school. With the talk of work experience, the hosts also mentioned the importance of resume building.

Along with job hunting, Geliche and Freeman have talked about moving into together and looking for a place to live, if they are hired in areas that are close enough to each other. Both hosts are determined to find jobs before finding a residence. The hosts also mention that there are certain things they are going to miss after graduation, like the changing of the seasons. Both Freeman and Geliche love fall, but spring in the U.P. holds a special spot on Freeman’s heart. While both seniors are not opposed to living in the U.P. right after graduation, they are both hoping to spread their wings and see other places.

With finals out of the way, senior co-hosts Monica Freeman and Gina Geliche are looking forward to their final semester at Finlandia. Along with their final semester, Freeman and Geliche are excited to be home for the holidays to dive into their favorite Christmas traditions. Unmentioned in the podcast, the duo recorded the episode in the Hoover Center, which used to house the president and his family. Currently, the Hoover Center is where the president’s office is located. To start the podcast, Freeman and Geliche discussed Christmas traditions that they are participate in, as members of the Servant Leadership House. Each year, the house members watch some sort of Christmas special, in previous years it has been Merry Christmas Charlie Brown, while most recently it has been the Saturday Night Live Christmas Past. Freeman mentioned that she has seen the skits so frequently, that she can quote them word for word. The SL House also decorates for Christmas, putting up a tree that was donated to them. Along with the tree, the House hangs stockings, which they have oodles of. While the house already had stockings when the first group moved in, each new member of the house receives a stocking for Christmas. The house currently features over 20 stockings. Moving on to personal family traditions, Geliche discussed an old Italian tradition that her family partakes in called the Festival of the Seven Fish. Long story short, the festival uses a lot of salted fish that is eventually fried. Freeman and Geliche than moved on to discussing Christmas cookies and gingerbread houses, and the physical struggle of making cookies that look presentable. One of Freeman’s favorite traditions is putting her family’s tree up, a job that she has been in charge of since high school. Freeman stated that her family’s tree can’t go up until after her dad’s birthday, which is in early December, but the tree normally goes up after Freeman comes home for the holidays. Geliche’s family has a tree for every room, and each tree is decorated differently. Freeman and Geliche also discussed their mothers’ nutcracker collections, which take up some real estate in their homes. Geliche brought up more Italian traditions with Saint Nicholas Day on December 6th and La Befana, who delivers presents to Italian children on the eve of Epiphany. As Geliche describes, as the wisemen past through to see Jesus, they meet La Befana, whom they invite to go see Jesus. Turning down the invitation at first, La Befana changes her mind and decides she needs to bring gifts, so she packs up toys and heads off to see Jesus, leaving toys in children’s shoes. To wrap up the year, and the podcast, the Lion Around team would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays. With the holidays coming up, Lion Around hosts Monica Freeman and Gina Geliche sat down to talk about a serious topic, what to get a college student for Christmas. Recording on the second floor of North Wind Books, Freeman and Geliche discussed the excitement of receiving kitchen utensils as you grow older. With several categories and puns to get through, Freeman and Geliche started with useful cookware/ kitchen items.

WHAT’S COOKING? Freeman first suggests a slow cooker for college students, since slow cookers tend to be an easy way to make food. The hosts would like to remind students, or family, that dorms do not allow slow cookers, so be mindful of housing policies when purchasing gifts. Recipes and cookbooks are also an option, especially for the students who have to cook for themselves, or as Geliche suggests, just find a roommate who will cook for you. Coffee gifts are another suggestion, including beans, prepackaged mugs with hot cocoa or coffee, or a travel mug. Geliche suggests a reusable water bottle, a handy tool to use to avoid being called upon in class and keep you hydrated.

SOCKS, SOCKS, SOCKS Moving on to clothing items, the top clothing item, agreed upon by Freeman and Geliche, is socks. Especially thick socks, because it can be cold in the Keweenaw. Weather appropriate clothing is also suggested, like bibs or heavy coats. When looking at bibs or coats, Freeman and Geliche swear by Carhartt, stating the outer gear stays warm and lasts for a long time. Slippers or socks with grips are great too, at least they are to Freeman, who has slipped down the stairs in her house. Sunglasses, watches and fitness trackers are also great ideas.

STUDENTS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN Freeman stated that for the past couple Christmases, and birthdays, that she has asked for people’s favorite books, to expand her book shelf and her “what to read” list. If books are not your thing, movies are also great. Quality headphones and subscriptions to streaming sites, physical magazines or “goody boxes” allow students to fill time that is not spent not studying. A good camera that is separate from a phone is another idea, especially if the individual likes to pick up hobbies and be creative. Blankets, candles, haircuts and massages also made the list.

MISCELLANEOUS Last but not least, Freeman and Geliche had several suggestions that did not fit in the previous categories. These suggestions include anything dealing with cars. For example; a tank of gas, an oil change, snow tires, an auto survival kit and a sturdy snowbrush. Tools and fans, while they may not be the most exciting gifts, are some of the most useful, especially if students are in dorms that are hot or need to fix anything within their rooms. Geliche talked about “decking everything but the halls” in the Servant Leadership House, when Freeman mentioned that ornaments made the list.

To finish off the list, Freeman and Geliche agreed that when in doubt, money and gift cards will suffice as gifts to help pay for groceries or gas. Stopping by your favorite local bookstore wink wink is also a great option. Keep your eyes peeled for the holiday episode that will be coming out later in December.

Sitting outside the 5th & Elm Coffee located on campus, Lion Around discussed all the best coffee shops in the Copper Country. Both Monica and Gina are regular-ish coffee drinkers, who believe that coffee is beneficial to keep students functioning during their college careers. Geliche started drinking coffee within the last two to three years, while Freeman picked up the habit her senior year of high school. Due to their caffeine habits, the Lion Around hosts have scoured the Copper Country for coffee shops during the past three years.

Favoring the unique aspects of the local shops more than the pre-packaged chain stores, the list they formed does not have Biggby Coffee on it, nor does it have the on-campus coffee shops located on Michigan Tech and Finlandia’s campuses. Freeman and Geliche decided it would be important to discuss things like; price for a plain old cup of joe, specialty drinks, food menu, distance from campus, personal suggestions, study ability, hours and unique aspects of the shop.

HOUGHTON COFFEE SHOPS Starting with Houghton, which has the most local coffee shops, the first shop discussed is 5th & Elm. Originally started in Calumet, on the corner of 5th and Elm, the shop has two and half locations, one in Calumet, one in Houghton and a small shop located on Finlandia’s campus. While Houghton may not be the primary location, it tends to be the one that drives the most traffic. Freeman and Geliche praised the food menu at the shop, which is stocked with different sandwiches, salads, wraps and breakfast items. Freeman mentioned that it is the only place she knows of in the local area that sells matcha green tea for anyone who needs a caffeine buzz but doesn’t necessarily enjoy coffee.

Also, in Houghton is the Bookworm, Cyberia and Steep & Brew. The Bookworm is located at the split in the road that takes drivers into downtown Houghton. The shop sells used books, meats and ice cream, outside of coffee. Bookworm is also one of the local shops that offers a punch card when you purchase their beverages. Freeman and Geliche suggest stopping by Cyberia to buy their coffee shakes or blended drinks. Cyberia offers various discounts throughout the year, for example in fall if you wear Ugg boots, customers can knock a percentage off their drink. The shop also offers free cereal after a certain time if customers come in wearing their pajamas. Outside of the fun perks, Cyberia has a quiet atmosphere for students to study in. Steep & Brew is the final coffee shop in Houghton, and is the only local coffee shop that has a drive through. What it makes up for in drive through-ness, it lacks in inside space, since it is a part of an antique/resale place.

HANCOCK COFFEE SHOPS KC Bonkers is Hancock’s premiere coffee shop. While also selling coffee, customers can come in and shop for toys as well. Freeman and Geliche love to go grab a coffee and play the games that customers are able to play when they come in. Geliche suggests buying a Bonker Bubbler, a carbonated drink that customers can choose the flavoring for, as well as unicorn milk (cream) and clouds (whipped cream). In the coffee vein, Freeman suggests getting the Kablooey, which is a mocha with spices in it, so if customers have a low spice tolerance, Freeman suggests not getting that. Monica Freeman and Gina Geliche found themselves back in the Jutila Center for this spooky episode of Lion Around. With its history of being a hospital and rumors of ghost stories, the uninhabited floors of Jutila seemed to be the place to conjure up some Halloween magic. Both non-believers in the supernatural, Freeman and Geliche tried to keep the stories as local as possible and would like to thank North Wind Books, Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen, and author Jennifer Billock for helping with the search for stories.

Covering some of the more obvious stories, like the Paulding Light and the Calumet Theatre, Freeman and Geliche brushed on some (possibly) lesser known stories like Lake Breeze Resort in Eagle Harbor, Phi Kappa Tau in Hancock, Jeffers High School in Painesdale and of course the Jutila Center.

Doubling as Finlandia’s art campus, many students stay late to work on projects, and some students have had unexplainable occurrences happen while staying past hours. One example happened to Geliche while she was working in one of the computer labs. “I had this strange feeling of being watched, so I sat at a certain computer so there was nothing behind me. The feeling didn’t go away so I got up and closed the door to the lab. After hearing the door knob rattle and a door slam I decided that I was done for the night.” Several other students heard the same door slam, while others have stated hearing sounds like someone is running and children laughing. Former Michigan Tech students have stayed the night at Jutila to test whether or not the building is haunted. The students did pick up some paranormal phenomena on their “ghostie contraptions” as Freeman refers to them, experiencing various temperature changes on the floor they were on.

Freeman and Geliche also talked about two mine cave-ins that happened around Crystal Falls at the turn of the 20th century. Ghostly phenomena have also been sighted in the areas around the mines. If the legends are true, Freeman and Geliche highly encourage seeing whether or not you can see the lights of mining helmets in the Michigamme River.

The hosts ended the recording talking about weird things that tend to be common place at the Servant Leadership House. Freeman and Geliche are not convinced the house is haunted, and that the strange things all have logical explanations attached to them. You can determine if Monica and Gina are wrong by listening to the entire podcast below. Geliche and Freeman, as well as the entire Lion Around crew, want to wish everyone a safe and spooky Halloween!

To celebrate homecoming this weekend, Finlandia University welcomed one of its most highly regarded graduates to campus with Jordan Siegler (’09) visiting the set of Finlandia Fridays. Siegler is an alum of FinnU’s International School of Art & Design, has served as Finlandia Alumni Board President since 2016 and works in fundraising for Wisconsin Public Television.

Siegler spent last weekend in town to take part in the Alumni Board’s annual fall meeting. At the meeting they discussed many things, including their role with the institution.

“We are champions for the future of Finlandia,” he said. “We work with leadership here on campus, with Finlandia networks across the country to engage people, to build support for the university, and figure out what people need from the alumni board.”

The role has been exciting for Siegler, and he wants to make sure people are aware that they are always looking for new people to get involved. If you, or someone you know, is interested in joining the Finlandia Alumin Board, please get in touch with Olivia Myers at olivia.myers@finlandia.edu or (906) 487-7499.

While Siegler is excited about the alumni board, he’s more captivated when he thinks back to the experience he had at Finlandia University’s International School of Art & Design

“What I took away from my education at Finlandia is a process of critical analysis, thinking and problem solving, which is at the core of design,” he said. “Those lessons can be applied across the board in your life and career. My experience here absolutely led to the success I’m seeing in my career and my life now.”

The decision to come here was aided by being one of the early students to earn the Brule Scholarship, his first impressions of FinnU’s faculty and facilities, and his desire to study abroad. Before graduating he was able to make a trip to Finland.

“I learned a lot, traveled a lot, and made relationships that I still have today with exchange students that were there and Finnish students that were there,” he said. “It changed my life.”

Cue drum roll -- It’s homecoming week! FinnU is bringing homecoming back and there is an all-star lineup of events. This week's episode was recorded in Old Main, the school's original building.

Formerly known as Suomi College, and started in 1896, Old Main used to be the only building on the campus. Freeman and Geliche kicked off the special edition episode by recounting the special times they had at their high school homecomings. Geliche stated that she had a special attachment to homecoming since she was in the pep band, who’s job was to pump people up. Freeman mentioned that homecoming was the one thing she looked forward to after starting the school year, and she loved going to the dance to “whip out her white person dances moves.”

Reflecting on homecoming prior to recording, Freeman referred to the themes that were apart of homecoming and the competition associated with the themes, stating her class was competitive, so when classmates didn’t dress up “they received frowny faces.” Geliche talked about how her school had two pep rallies, one to announce homecoming, and the other to pump the school up for the football game. The theme for FinnU’s homecoming this year is "Bleed Blue."

For the entire week of homecoming, FinnU students are able to compete in the Blue Warrior Challenge. The challenge will have students competing against each other by having them go to various events, where they will score points. The person with the most points at the end of the week will be crowned the Blue Warrior, gaining eternal fame and glory and marshaling the homecoming parade on Saturday.

In the parade, spectators will be able to see Riku’s Royalty, or the homecoming court. Students were nominated by their peers, and voting is underway. The winners will be the two students with the most votes at the end of the week.

Other events happening during homecoming week are an alumni social where students will be able to talk to alumni and expand their networks. A pep rally will also take place on the Friday before the homecoming game on Saturday. For a full list of the homecoming events go to finlandia.edu/homecoming.

The Lion Around podcast went back into Finn Hall for its third episode, which focuses on college cooking tips and tricks. Finn Hall (short for Finlandia Hall), is the only residence hall on FinnU’s campus, and it is equipped with community lounges on each floor. Each lounge comes with a microwave, stove top, mini fridge and, sink so students can cook for themselves outside of cafeteria hours or instead of going to the cafeteria.

Since many students are on their own for the first time, here are some tips that Monica Freeman and Gina Geliche have compiled to (hopefully) help with the nightmare that is cooking in college.

FAST- AND EASY-TO-MAKE FOODS If it all possible it is good to have a basic knowledge of a kitchen prior to arriving at college. It’s not a big deal if students don’t, but the more active students are in the kitchen, the easier the transition to college cooking. An easy food to make in college, according to Geliche and Freeman, are eggs, particularly scrambled eggs. Scrambled eggs can be cooked a variety of ways and can be “spruced up” to the student’s liking. Geliche and Freeman also mention other easy-to-cook foods like noodles, oatmeal and the college staple, popcorn. Also important, or at least to Freeman, popcorn buttons on microwaves lie, and do not actually cook the popcorn appropriately, which can set off fire alarms.

DORM-FRIENDLY KITCHEN GADGETS Dorms are relatively appliance friendly. Finlandia students are allowed to bring in a variety of appliances, save for toaster ovens and hot plates. While the sizes can vary, Freeman and Geliche suggest that students purchase a mini fridge(s) for their rooms. By doing so, the students have their own place to store food and leftovers. Having your own fridge also negates the need to use the community fridges that are in the lounges, so students don’t have to worry about their food being taken by other ravenous students. Microwaves and coffee pots, regardless if you drink coffee, also made the list. Coffee pots can be used to make ramen, noodles and instant meals with heated hot water. Freeman and Geliche also advise students to have basic kitchen utensils, like a plate, a bowl, fork, knife, spoon, reusable water bottles and mugs.

GRAB AND GO FOODS OR SNACKS In the hustle and bustle of college life, students may miss café times, so Freeman and Geliche suggest keeping these “quick” foods on hand. First off, fruits. Bananas, apples and oranges tend to be the fruits that best accommodate the college budget. Granola bars are also fast and can be eaten to and from class, or depending on your teacher, in class. Bread and peanut butter are also basic staples that can be used in a variety of ways. Freeman personally prefers the old fashioned, yet very portable PB&J, especially when she has homemade jelly. Rounding out their list with crackers, ramen, fruit snacks, seasonings, instant oatmeal, pudding, yogurt and chips.

This week Finlandia Fridays turns into Faculty Fridays as Assistant Professor in Philosophy Dr. Patricia Grosse was on set to answer the question - what is philosophy? Dr. Grosse talked about that and a lot more in this week's episode, starting with what the word literally means. Philosophy is the love of wisdom.

"If you love wisdom, you love philosophy, you should take my classes," she said to start the episode.

In a world where working in the trades or focusing on STEM-related degrees seems to be all students hear about, Dr. Grosse is excited to be providing an alternative that many students will find interesting, rewarding and fulfilling.

For the second episode of Lion Around, Monica Freeman decided to test a few student’s knowledge with a Michigan slang test. Freeman tested her co-host Gina Geliche, as well as art and design students Denia Bent and Ramona Kuhn. The idea initially came from Freeman watching Youtube videos of actors and actresses sharing slang from their respective countries or states, which made Freeman curious as to what was considered Michigan slang. After some research, and some discussions with fellow Michiganders, the Michigan slang list was created.

It was the hosts’ goal to test students who were not from Michigan and Bent and Kuhn were deemed as the perfect candidates. Bent originates from Florida and is in her junior year at Finlandia. Prior to coming to FinnU to play softball and study art and design, Bent had never been to Michigan, so winter was a little bit of a shock for her. Kuhn on the other hand, has experienced winter her whole life, hailing from St. Cloud, Minnesota. In her second year at FinnU, Kuhn had also never been to Michigan prior to coming to college. With introductions out of the way Geliche, Bent and Kuhn prepared to navigate the exciting challenge of the Michigan vernacular.

Some of the slang was easier for the guests, like Yooper and pasty. Other words were not as easy. The biggest word that was up for debate was the word “doorwall,” a word that is more commonly used in southern Michigan. The word is another way to reference a sliding glass door, or a patio door, but when confronted with the word, Geliche, Bent and Kuhn all responded with similar answers, basically saying that a doorwall is a wall full of doors.

Many laughs were shared throughout the span of the episode. To test your knowledge of Michigan slang, check out the episode below, and subscribe to the Finlandia Podcast Network to catch every episode of Lion Around as well as other Finlandia podcasts.

Subscribe to Finlandia Podcast Network on your favorite podcast app or site to catch every episode.

Lion Around: first time to school versus last episode notes: For the first episode, Freeman and Geliche streamed from Finlandia Hall to discuss the differences between coming to school freshmen year and senior year.  As for most freshmen, Finn Hall was where both Freeman and Geliche started their Finlandia experience. After a year or so of dorm living, Geliche moved into the Servant Leadership House, with Freeman moving in a year later. The pair have been roommates in the house for the past two years, going on three, as they prepare to graduate.  Freeman started the conversation by mentioning the differences in responses that she has received between the years, mentioning that freshman year people want to know where you go and what you are going for, versus senior year where people want to know what your plan is after college. Geliche responded to that by saying she finds that question to also be difficult since she wants to go to graduate school but is unsure she would like to pursue further.

Freeman and Geliche also brushed on the importance of keeping track of keys and ID cards, with the thought that ID cards can help students receive discounts in a variety of places like movie theatres, restaurants, stores, museums, etc. Knowing what to pack and what not to pack for college was another topic of discussion, with both Freeman and Geliche stating that they overpacked their first year and have “dialed it down” since. The pair of hosts admitted that moving home with the amount of stuff they have left at the House throughout the years could be somewhat difficult.

This week Finlandia Fridays sits down with Board of Trustees President Julie Badel. Badel was in town, from Chicago, for the annual winter Board of Trustees meeting. She explains her joy of coming to the Upper Peninsula every year as it is where her mother grew up. It is a place she has grown to love and she "never complains about coming up here. It feels like home."

Badel became interested in Finlandia University while attending the Finnish American Lawyers Association meeting. She was approached by, at that time, Finlandia President Robert Ubbelohde inquiring if she'd be interested in Finlandia's Finnish Council. To which she replied "of course!" Badel goes on to reminisce of her fond memory of entering the meeting as a complete stranger, but feeling at home and welcomed the instance she stepped foot in the door.

Finlandia University, the only Finnish founded university still in operation in North America, has brought many great memories to Badel. She adores the students and their energy stating this is something she doesn't see at other universities.

Host Michael H. Babcock elaborates on that point, "there is so much one-on-one attention, which is really an awarding experience for many students." The attention to the students directly is something offered at Finlandia that is unique to other universities. At Finlandia you are not a number or a name but a friend to other students, faculty, and staff.

As a nursing school, it’s important for Finlandia to continue to evolve its offerings to make sure students are provided the opportunities they need. That was the thought when the university created a RN-BSN program in the early 2000s, and it’s the thought that keeps that program going strong today in its latest evolution: the university’s first fully accredited 100 percent online program.

In this week’s edition of Finlandia Fridays, the RN-BSN program is explored with Program Director Mark Miron. Miron talks about the program’s early days and introduces the new $15,000 price guarantee. That pricing puts Finlandia University as one of the most affordable RN-BSN programs in the nation – and the only one where a student will know with certainty what their total bill will be before they even begin.

RN-BSN programs are designed for working Registered Nurses who have earned an Associate Degree in Nursing (AND). The courses are all offered online, allowing these working nurses to continue their studies while they manage full-time jobs that often include extra shifts, working nights or working weekends.

Miron talks about how the program is specifically designed for local nurses – including formatting the pricing structure to make the program extremely cost effective for nurses at Aspirus clinics. It’s also a common option for students graduating with a two-year degree from Upper Peninsula community colleges like Bay College and Gogebic Community College.

This week Finlandia Fridays speaks with art therapy major Laurin Labonte. Art therapy is a new major offered at Finlandia first made available to students in 2013. This major has a wide range of uses as Labonte outlines it can help immensely with Alzheimer patients, PTSD sufferers, and even patients recovering from car accidents. Art has been found to carry numerous therapeutic properties that can aid in emotional behavior and even motor skills with Alzheimer patients.

Labonte will be the first Finlandia student to graduate with an art therapy degree but it hasn't taken her long to find her niche in society. Laurin is doing her internship at Garden View Medical Center in Calumet working with Alzheimer patients. She works with these individuals by preforming art therapy practices with water paints helping them with motor skills and also trying to tap into memories. During the painting process Labonte will converse with the patients about their memories and what they are painting, this taps into older memories that may have otherwise been forgotten.

Finlandia University is excited to be able to offer more unique degrees such as art therapy. We love the ability to give students the option to take advantage of a program that isn't offered elsewhere and allow them to experience things that may have otherwise been unavailable.

This week on Finlandia Fridays we feature Finlandia’s men’s ice hockey coach Joe Burcar as he previews the future of the program and the ongoing season. The Houghton County Arena is a very familiar place for Burcar, winning the Harris Cup in 2007 and finishing his first stint with the team at a 104-96-11 record. Burcar remains the all-time winningest coach in program history and plans to continue his legacy.

Burcar says his choice to move back and coach was a no-brainer. He enjoys the atmosphere and the strong hockey culture associated with the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. While the hockey program at Finlandia has struggled as of late, Burcar fully intends to bring it back to the glory and prestige of that of the 2007 Harris Cup winning team.

The lions take on Concordia University this weekend looking to pick up their first win of the season at home. Game times are set for 7:15 PM on Friday (11/11/16) and 4:00 PM on Saturday (11/12/16). We hope to see you there!

On this installment of Finlandia Fridays special guest Dr. Hilary Virtanen discusses the Paloheimo Fellows Program with host Michael H. Babcock. This program offers a unique and special experience that allows four lucky Finlandia students (of any major) the opportunity to study abroad in Tampere, Finland. This program runs for three weeks every May and is guided by Finnish expert Dr. Virtanen. In Finland students will gain knowledge on social scientific techniques to observe and analyze the deep rooted Finnish culture along with experience in writing, media documentation and intercultural communication. 1c7a7910

Finlandia and Dr. Virtanen alike are grateful for this opportunity to take students abroad to such a wonderful area. This is all made possible largely to the generous support of the Paloheimo Foundation, which covers almost all expenses during the trip. Although this trip is open to any major, Finlandia requires students be in either junior or senior standing by January, and have an overall GPA of above 3.0. Applications are due by November 9, and this course is allotted at three credit hours.

For more information about the program or to read the blog dedicated to the trip head over to finlandia.edu/paloheimo.

This week on Finlandia Fridays Michael H. Babcock discusses the PTA program offered at Finlandia University with soon to be graduate Devin Smith. In this installment of Finlandia Fridays Smith outlines his personal experiences here at Finlandia University and on his time in the PTA (Physical Theory Assistant) program. Smith touches on topics including his first experiences at Finlandia, his personal involvement in the PTA program and the PTA Club.

Smith's collegiate path has been everything but traditional; coming in as a 21 year old freshman after playing junior hockey in Montana and enlisting in a program that allows him to go to different clinics experiencing hands on training is something that most students cannot say they have done. The ability for students to visit different facilities and get real world training is something that Finlandia is very proud of.

All topics discussed in this week's episode can be found on finlandia.edu/pta along with other opportunities and scholarships.
