In this episode of the #VoiceOfVeritas podcast, Zoe Sands, Social and Community Marketing at Veritas interviews Phil Lewis, Senior Director of Global Strategic Partnerships Alliances on How can an Enterprise stop becoming obsolete. This podcast follows on from his recent blog on the same topic.
Enterprises need to innovate and expand into new markets to survive, invest in new technologies or risk stagnation or become obsolete says Phil Lewis. In order for a board to approve large scale IT projects, you need to show how the investment will help grow the enterprise, reduce costs and or reduce risks for an IT budget to be signed off. Phil also mentions in the podcast a formula developed by McKinsey (2009) for allocating IT budget, called; the Three Horizons Model, which allocates resources; people and budget. The model splits the IT budget into three uneven buckets; first you allocate 70% of budget to existing technologies, secondly allocate 20% to fund new technologies that currently exist today but are not used, and then finally allocate 10% of the budget to be used to look at new technologies that aren’t in the market at the moment. Using this model will help future proof your IT spend.
Phil also mentions how Veritas can help enterprises grow, reduce costs and reduce risks. Listen to the podcast to hear Phil talk about how an Enterprise can stop becoming obsolete. If you found the podcast interesting please do share it on your social networks.

In the latest episode of #VoiceOfVeritas, Zoe Sands, Social and Community Marketing at Veritas interviews Phil Lewis, Senior Director of Global Strategic Partnerships Alliances on Digital Transformation - A journey to escape oblivion! This podcast follows on from his recent blog on the same topic.
Though there are many definitions of Digital transformation, Phil explains that in this case, it is taking manual business processes and automating the processes that will generate data, which can then be utilised for new business purposes. He says technology is at the forefront and is driving change and churn. Many industries are changing and evolving and new entrants disrupting markets.
Nowadays, new entrants and start-ups see data as a commodity, or as an asset that can be sold. Some people say that data is the new oil, but Phil says data is the new water, freely available, which needs to be collected. Executives are now seeing the value in data and how it impacts share prices. During the episode Phil shares some digital transformation use cases.
Phil also advises that those wanting to start on a digital transformation journey will need to first simplify the core IT infrastructure, free up resources and invest at the edge, look at how data is collected and then look how you can get business insight. Doing this, you’ll then be able to innovate at the edge. However, this doesn’t guarantee success, as there is a high failure rate on big data projects, the reason is lack of planning and understanding what you want to achieve and what you have at the beginning. Listen to the podcast to hear Phil’s views and advice on digital transformation. And if you found the podcast interesting please share on your social networks.

In this latest episode of the Voice of Veritas, Zoe Sands, Social and Community Marketing at Veritas interviews Ian Wood, Senior Director and Head of Technology Practice EMEA on the latest 2019 South Africa Databerg Research findings. During the interview, Ian explains that a #Databerg is a concept developed by Veritas and describes the makeup of data stored by an organisation. This is a similar premise to an iceberg, where you can see some of the data (above the water) and some you do not (below the water) - in this case, the data below the water is dark data and ROT data.
Results from the 2019 South Africa Databerg Report show that the composition of clean data has almost tripled at 28%. Dark data has reduced to 41%, this is fantastic news, as it shows South African organisations are starting to get a handle on their dark data. There is still more work to be done in terms of classifying ROT data with organisations needing to stop storing everything forever, as typically people tend to be data hoarders and want to keep data in case they need it in the future.
Ian shares some useful data management tips and says data visibility is key in order to manage the data you have and that you need to create a workable data governance strategy sponsored by the executive team to prevent a data hoarding culture.
Cloud adoption rates are only slightly increasing in South Africa, not as fast or widespread compared to other markets Veritas has surveyed. Public cloud is still not anywhere near where it should be for South Africa says Ian. He highlighted that there are still concerns over cloud lock-in and how organisations get their data out of the cloud, this main concern has halted cloud adoption rates in South Africa.
The episode concludes with advice on disaster recovery and achieving data regulatory compliance. Find out more by listening to Ian’s podcast interview on the 2019 South Africa Databerg Research.

In this latest episode of the Voice of Veritas Zoe Sands, Social and Community Marketing at Veritas interviews Arthur Dell, CTO for Emerging Markets on The Datasphere. During the interview, Arthur states that to identify and classify critical data is sometimes difficult to solve, using machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to help distinguish between what is critical data and what is not is essential. The more information you have the more difficult it is to manually classify data, hence the need for using automation in classification.
Mobile, the Internet of Things (IoT), Multi-Cloud, Digital Transformation, AI, Machine Learning and Quantum Computing are all driving change and new business opportunities but are also creating exponential amounts of data. With the adoption of new technologies people are creating unstructured data at a phenomenal rate and this is a challenge for organisations on how to classify this data and identify what is relevant for business and what can be used to help gain competitive advantage.
Arthur also touches on cloud as an enabler and disruptor for digital transformation, and that any transformation an organisation implements has the potential to create risk because of change. He also talks in more detail about the use cases for AI and quantum computing and that coupled closely together are the next frontier of disruption. He advises that to derive value from data you shouldn’t demonise data, but instead harness the power of data by using AI and machine learning. In this Voice of Veritas podcast episode, we’re digging into the truth in Information. Zoe Sands, Social and Community Marketing, Veritas, interviews Ian Wood, Head of Business Practices EMEA, Veritas, on the latest Databerg research.
How can you get a handle on your dark data? Veritas just recently launched the second Databerg research for the United Arab Emirates.
In 2016, we rolled out how organizations are effectively managing their data and the key obstacles they faced. Our survey results then uncovered that the biggest challenge was visibility into their data. Veritas then coined the term “Databerg” in our analogy when looking at the types of data an organization must manage.
What is a “Databerg” is a concept similar to an iceberg. Above the surface Below the surface, organizations don’t know what data resides their and how valuable the data is. It’s known as “dark data” or better known as data that is not classified. Above the water is the “clean data” or better known as the data an organization understands.

In this Voice of Veritas podcast episode, we’re digging into the truth in Information. Zoe Sands, Social and Community Marketing, Veritas, interviews Brett Samuel, Technical Sales Manager, Veritas, from GITEX 2018 discussing Ransomware.
Ransomware is still an ever-present occurrence; however, we’re hearing about it less in the media. The number of customers that have shared their concern this week at GITEX 2018 is astounding!
In the Middle East, the Oil and Gas industry is being very badly hit by ransomware. Veritas is here to help customers solve the problem through data protection.
Fundamentally, you need to have a way to get your data back without paying the ransom. How can you prepare? You want an offsite copy that you can recover from and be back up and running as soon as possible. Can’t rely on just one copy. It’s not enough! So, here’s the 3-2-1 approach: You need to have 3 copies in 2 different locations and 1 offsite. Veritas gives customers the ability through LTR and the integration with cloud to protect their data.

Since the announcement of Netbackup CloudCatalyst, it is now available as a physical appliance, virtual appliance and as a container on the Flex Appliance.
Customers are increasingly looking to take advantage of lower costs of object storage in the cloud. Moving deduplicated data to object storage in the cloud will reduce costs even further.
Often deduplicated data must be rehydrated and deduplicated a second time before it can be moved to object storage in the cloud. NetBackup CloudCatalyst eliminates this second step by moving deduplicated data directly from NetBackup to object storage in the cloud, saving time and ultimately cost.
