The “swashbuckling, intrigue, and a dash of magic” continues in Book Two of Tales of the Left Hand, as the Duke of Kohaya gives Tesca and Kayrla a new mission, one that takes them outside the Quad: A search for the secret haven of the most legendary pirate to ever sail the Frees. But time is precious, for the Duke’s enemies are hot on their heels.
When the Duke arranges for the pair to escort the enigmatic Captain Grivus on his expedition to find the haven (and treasure) of the notorious pirate Praeditorus Rex, Kayrla is thrilled at the prospect of going to sea once more. But unbeknownst to her, the Duke has given Tesca a second mission of greater priority than the first, one that may propel the Quad into war if it is revealed. This extra wrinkle further complicates matters as their journey proceeds. As their ship is attacked by a wily foe, the pair devises a desperate plan to survive that pushes both Tesca’s swordsmanship and Kayrla’s spellcraft to their limits, but will it be enough to save them?
Epilogue. Kayrla struggles to carry on despite her grief and fulfill the mission now entrusted to her.
Tesca realizes the price that must be paid to give the Cutlass enough time to get free.
As the pirate sinks, dragging the Cutlass down with her, Tesca, Wick and Jacomo board the enemy vessel to find a way to separate the two ships before both are lost.
Kayrla’s spell is unleashed, surging out of control and threatening to destroy the Cutlass as well as the pirate.
Tesca conceives a desperate strategy to drive off the pirate once and for all, requiring Kayrla to create the largest spell she’s ever made.
Kayrla uses her magical talent for repairs to keep the sails intact and the pirate at bay, but for how long?
The pirate unleashes a secret weapon to destroy the Cutlass’s sails and leave her dead in the water.
Hoping to uncover the ringleaders of a potential mutiny aboard the Cutlass, Kayrla tries to enlist the help of an old friend.
The entire ship turns out to watch the competition between Kayrla and Jacomo to determine which of them is the better sailor.
Kayrla is drawn into a competition with Jacomo, one of the new sailors on board the Cutlass, then discovers that there’s still one member of the old crew still on board.
The company reaches the rendezvous point, and Kayrla is surprised to find that the ship coming to pick them up is her old ship, the Cutlass.
Fleeing into the jungle, the bandits hot on their trail, Kayrla and Grivus are forced to make a final stand.
Kayrla experiences the wild interior of the Quad as the company journeys overland to the rendezvous.
