In August 2024, unrest swept across the UK after the tragic killings in Southport, fuelled by online misinformation and weaponised fears about migration. In Bristol, the tension erupted in Castle Park and outside the Mercure Hotel, where asylum seekers were housed. The police presence was thin. The danger was real. And yet, what happened next was extraordinary, ordinary Bristolians put their bodies on the line to defend their neighbours. We Don’t Do That Here is a one-hour audio documentary from Bristol's community radio stations - BCfm and Ujima, weaving together multiple in-depth interviews with those who lived it: refugees inside the hotel with their children, activists and local residents on the streets, police officers, youth workers, charity leaders, journalists, and community broadcasters. Their voices reveal the fear of that week, the courage of those who stood in solidarity, and the deep divisions that surfaced under pressure. The programme also investigates the powerful role of media and misinformation, such as how a single false claim spiralled into riots, how national outlets inflamed stereotypes, and how community radio and grassroots networks became lifelines of truth. Listeners hear not just about what happened, but why, and what it tells us about Britain in an age of polarisation.Above all, this is a story of resilience. From smiles through hotel windows to grandmothers holding banners, from grassroots charities to city-wide counter-protests, Bristol’s communities demonstrated that hate would not go unchallenged. This documentary asks: what does it take to keep a city safe, welcoming, and united, and what can the rest of the country learn?A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR CONTRIBUTORSContributors:Muneera Pilgrim – Creative and BroadcasterRoger Ball – Academic ResearcherAnonymous – Afghan Asylum SeekerJim (Not real name) - Bristol Anti-FascistsSerena Sergeant – Avon & Somserset PoliceDesmond Brown – Growing Futures CICOlivia Lamont Bishop – Borderlands BristolMaya Mate-Kole – Mwanzo ProjectProducers: Marcus Smith & Miranda RaeSound Design: George ColweyPhoto Credit: Simon HollidayFunding: Bristol City Council

This exclusive BCfm podcast was commissioned as part of Resourcing Racial Justice (RRJ) reflections, learning and evaluation.

The four people charged with criminal damage for toppling the statue of enslaver Edward Colston were recently found not guilty by a jury. It was a historic case which made headlines the world over. But here in this podcast, we talk about an aspect of the trial that you will not hear about in the news: love.

Using archive news footage, interviews with campaigners, and scenes from the courtroom, presenter Priyanka Raval - who was there for the duration of the trial - looks at the remarkable role of love, compassion, and allyship in this case. We ask, was this a win for racial justice? And what role does love play in our efforts for social justice?

Presented and Written by Priyanka Raval Produced by Marcus Smith and Tin Hinson

Phoenix from the Airwaves The Untold

In a community centre in inner city Bristol, next to the nursery, and the café and the hall for local meet-ups and yoga, sits a very special place. The BCfm – Bristol Community FM – radio station. From their studio next to Easton community centre’s reception, 204 volunteer radio presenters broadcast to the city of Bristol and beyond. Dezzi Rankin (the resident Sunday morning reggae host), Shout Out (LGBTQ+), Silver Sound (for the older listener), Mid-Week Sports bar, Real Women – they’re all here.

Pat Hart has been the station manager for ten years – and also the station’s breakfast presenter. “I don’t think there’s a single part of life in Bristol we don’t represent.”

It is always a struggle, but with grants drying up, the station has found itself living more and more of a hand to mouth existence. At the beginning of 2019 he found himself asking the council for more support, but nothing could prepare him for what was around the corner. “If I’d have had a crystal ball, I might have run away at the beginning of 2019.”

One fateful day in August at 11am, Tony Johnson launched his 50th Anniversary of the Moon landings special with Telstar. “I plugged my MP3 stick into the usual slot… and then I smelt something strange. Looked to my left, and saw the smoke coming from somewhere behind the desk.” He did his next link, alerted the receptionist to the need for a fire engine, and then as the studio filled with acrid smoke, he queued up an hour’s worth of music. “The radio host’s worst nightmare is dead air.”

Pat arrived to find the studio completely destroyed, the insurance documents illegible from fire damage, and his thoughts turned to the listeners. The longer the station is off air, the more perilous their situation becomes.

Can Pat get the station back on air - and fast?

Produced by Polly Weston for BBCR4
