Chronic pain. It’s estimated that 1 in 5 people globally suffer from chronic pain and this number increases with age. Now, I’m not talking about acute pain, which comes and goes. Chronic pain is pain that lasts more than 12 weeks and may appear without any initial injury.

Hashimoto’s is among the most prevalent autoimmune disorder affecting about 10% of population. Hashimoto's patients are especially prone to increased risk of chronic pain as it’s also a recognized cause of fibromyalgia, and chronic widespread pain.

Listen in to hear about Your Brain’s Role in Chronic Pain, what I have learned about the path that often leads to chronic pain, and how to get out of it.

Has your journey of learning about Hashimoto’s been confusing? Does it feel like there’s too much information and not enough clarity on how it applies to you as an individual? Everyone claims to be an expert, or at the very least has advice to share on how to solve your problems, yet is it really the direction you need to take every time you get new info?

I have been reflecting on my own journey since I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, as well as my professional journey from educator and school administrator to personal trainer, then added health coach to my credentials, and most recently completed training to certify as an Integrative Health Practitioner.

I absolutely love learning. Even more than learning, I love helping others through teaching what I learn. The process has been lengthy and yes, tons of information that at times can be very conflicting on how to approach my own Hashimoto’s needs for increased energy, weight loss, mental clarity, emotional stability, and really just overall wellness.

Listen in to hear what I’ve learned from these experiences and how conflicting information along the way from doctors, educators, research, media, family, and friends, ultimately led me to successful outcomes.

Today's Dig Deeper Resource:

Check out the book by John C Maxwell called Failing Forward, turning mistakes into steppingstones for success. This is not a book about Hashimoto’s, but it’s an easy read by a fabulous author that will help you with the mindset you need to navigate failures.

One of the most common questions I get asked by clients just starting their wellness journey is:

“What should I focus on first, sleep, stress, toxins, hormones, gut issues, diet, or exercise?

The answer is, it really depends. There are so many ways to approach functional or integrative wellness and there’s really no cookie-cutter formula.

Having said that, if I were starting over again, I would focus first on functional lab testing. Listen in to hear why.

In the process of getting to this diagnosis, and sharing the results with a few close friends, I learned that there are many questions that you all may have that are similar to the ones that have come up from my friends.

Questions I will review today are: Isn’t Hashimoto’s something only girls get? How did you find out? Is Hashimoto’s hereditary? What were his signs/symptoms? How early should children be tested for Hashimotos? In addition, a puzzling statement that came from one of his regular doctors which was "I’m confused on how he was positive for Hashimotos, yet his thyroid levels were all in range, I’ve not seen this before.”

I hope today’s episode will bring some clarity, and wisdom on how to approach this with your own children as they navigate their health journey.

Conceiving can be especially challenging for patients with thyroid disease. I personally struggled with infertility and multiple miscarriages that could have been avoided if I knew more about Hashimoto’s when we were trying to conceive. I believe we go through challenges in life for a variety of reasons, but ultimately, I believe we should learn from them, and help others avoid the same hard lessons if at all possible.

Today I will review 4 questions related to conceiving when you have Hashimoto’s:

  1. What should I do before trying to conceive?
  2. What kind of doctor should I see?
  3. What should I bring to my first preconception visit with my doctor?
  4. What should we discuss at my first visit?

I recently read in the book “Reversing Hashimoto’s” written by Dr. Anshul Gupta that Hashimoto’s patients could benefit from supplementing with Acetyl L-Carnitine. So, I decided to dig a little deeper to learn more about it.

L-Carnitine supplementation has been shown in a 2016 research study of patients with hypothyroidism to significantly improve both physical and mental fatigue. For Hashimoto’s patients, fatigue, brain fog, and muscle weakness are all common complaints, even after regulating their thyroid hormones.

Listen in to learn what L-Carnitine is, what role does it play in our body, and how to determine if you should consider adding it to your own nutrition plan.

If you have Hashimoto’s, then you know what a roller coaster of symptoms and emotions it can be. I’ve had so many listeners express their frustration of how their doctor starts them on thyroid medication, and then simply tells them to follow up in 6 months to a year. They are led to believe that is all that can be done. They end up usually getting very little, if any relief from symptoms, and in many cases they even get worse. Today, I discuss this topic and offer some resources to help you get a better understanding of why this happens and how to get help.

Today I have the great pleasure of a candid chat with a new local friend of mine,  Hope Holcomb.  She has been married for 23 years, and a mother to three amazing children.

She was a stay at home mom for about twenty years, then decided to go back to school, get her associates degree, and work in the school systems with children that have special needs.

She was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in January 2002, and has strived since then to not let it define her. Hope says, “having an invisible disease like Hashimoto’s sucks, but with the downs come the ups. I feel abundantly blessed in recent years to have supportive family, friends, and medical community to better care for my needs.”

Are you struggling to lose weight or manage healthy blood sugar levels? Maybe you’ve been diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or diabetes? Metabolic syndrome is also associated with patients who have thyroid dysfunction.

Dr Jarrouge is a board-certified physician in internal medicine and nephrology. He has been a hospitalist since 2013 in Houston, TX. As a hospitalist, his job is to take care of acutely ill patients admitted to the hospital for a myriad of medical conditions.

In his early 30s, he wrestled with a host of health issues including back pain, high blood pressure, prediabetes and was 35 lbs overweight. After being frustrated with conventional approaches, he took a radical departure from mainstream medicine and used lifestyle to completely reclaim his health.

His personal experience and realizing that patients who end up in the hospital the most are often metabolically sick, has shifted his professional interests to focus on nutrition as his main tool to combat chronic metabolic diseases, primarily obesity and type 2 diabetes. He currently coaches people remotely how to change their lifestyle and helps them reverse their chronic diseases and come off medications.

Did you know thyroid disease in men entails many of the same symptoms as those that affect women with a thyroid disorder. Men, however, may also experience some indications of a thyroid issue that are unique to their sex—some of which you may not immediately associate with the condition such as low sperm count, loss of muscle mass, and erectile dysfunction. Many men don't consider that they could have thyroid disease, even if they have classic symptoms.

In honor of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day which is October 15th, I wanted to discuss some of the research I found on hidden causes of infertility and pregnancy loss as it relates to thyroid patients. This is a near and dear topic for me personally, as my husband and I suffered the loss of 5 pregnancies in what seemed to be linked directly with my thyroid malfunction and/or Hashimoto’s disease. This led us on a long journey of questions along the way. For today, I will cover 3 that you also may find helpful:

  1. How can thyroid disorders effect your fertility?
  2. Can Hashimoto’s cause infertility or miscarriage?
  3. What can I do to prevent fertility or pregnancy complications related to thyroid disease?

At some point in your Hashimoto's journey, you may have heard about a food allergy test. You might be wondering if this is worth the time and money to get tested. A food allergy test can be a helpful tool to diagnose your allergies, but it's not always the best option. For example, if you have Hashimoto's disease and are feeling exhausted after eating certain foods, an elimination diet may give you more information about which food is the culprit. In today’s episode I will be discussing food sensitivity testing vs elimination diet. I’ll review what each of them are, the pros and cons of each, which one you should do first, next steps on your symptom free lifestyle, tips on how to make food sensitivity eating easier, and some resources to help along the way.

I’d like to introduce you to a new friend of mine, Heather Nowak. I learned of her first on Instagram, and was intrigued by her success in her personal health and fitness even in the midst of Hashimoto’s. How we tolerate our conditions, and methods we use to heal can also look very different. Ultimately, I hope Heather’s story brings a little comfort in similarities, and inspiration with possible new info on ways to improve your health, just like Heather.

Heather is a wife, a mother, a college student in a Masters of Social Work Program, and makes her health and fitness a priority in her Hashimoto’s healing journey.
