Hello, you’re listening to the Results Driven Organizations podcast, with Dr. Taunya Lowe; using my results driven philosophy of strategy, leadership, teams, and customer experiences; I help organizations develop their best kept secret… their human capital. This podcast is designed to expand the conversation with C-Suite leaders and those who support organizational growth and development and what it really takes to create, develop, and maintain results driven and high performing organizations. where we're diving into a crucial topic that's been on my mind lately: the importance of upskilling and reskilling leaders. For over a year now, I've been talking about the necessity of developing employees' skills and mindsets. But recently, after facilitating a meeting, I had a revelation that stopped me in my tracks, I mean, it hit me like a ton of bricks: leaders need to be upskilled and reskilled too. Think about it for a moment. How effective can an organization truly be if all its employees are growing and developing, but the leadership remains stagnant? It's like trying to sail a ship with a modern, high-tech crew but an outdated navigation system. Allow me to break this down further. In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, three key areas stand out as critical indicators that our leaders need developing too: critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and the ability to lead multigenerational teams. First, critical thinking. In an era of information overload and complex challenges, leaders must be able to analyze situations from multiple angles, make informed decisions, and solve problems creatively. Without these skills, how can they guide their teams through uncharted waters? Second, emotional intelligence. The days of the stoic, detached leader are long gone. Today's effective leaders need to understand and manage their own emotions while empathizing with others. EQ is a crucial skill for building strong relationships, motivating teams, and navigating the human aspects of organizational change. Third, let's consider the challenge of leading multigenerational teams. Today's workforce is more diverse than ever, with up to five generations working side by side. According to a 2020 Deloitte survey, 64% of business leaders cited managing a multigenerational workforce as a significant challenge. Each generation brings its own strengths, values, and communication styles to the table. Gen Z, the newest entrants to the workforce, are particularly reshaping workplace dynamics. Born between 1997 and 2012, they're expected to make up 27% of the workforce by 2025. A study by Dell Technologies found that 80% of Gen Z aspire to work with cutting-edge technology, and 91% say technology would influence their job choice. Moreover, a report by Glassdoor revealed that 77% of Gen Z workers value a company's diversity and inclusion initiatives when considering job offers. Our leaders need to be equipped with the skills to bridge these generational gaps, fostering understanding and collaboration across diverse teams. They need to know how to leverage the unique strengths of each generation while creating a cohesive team environment. For instance, harnessing Gen Z's digital nativity and desire for social impact can drive innovation and corporate social responsibility initiatives. However, a 2022 survey by Hibob found that 54% of HR professionals believe their managers struggle to lead multigenerational teams effectively. This underscores the urgent need for leadership development in this area. Leaders must learn to adapt their communication styles, mentoring approaches, and team-building strategies to cater to a diverse workforce. By upskilling our leaders in multigenerational leadership, we can create more inclusive, dynamic, and productive work environments. This not only improves team performance but also enhances employee satisfaction and retention across all generations. Leaders must be adept at bridging generational gaps, leveraging diverse perspectives, and creating inclusive environments where everyone can thrive. This requires a level of adaptability and cultural intelligence that many leaders may not naturally possess. So, what's the solution? It's time we expanded our focus on upskilling and reskilling to include your leadership. This means investing in leadership development programs that go beyond traditional management skills. Let’s create opportunities for leaders to challenge their assumptions, expand their emotional capacity, and gain practical experience in navigating the complexities of today's workforce. Imagine the potential of an organization where both employees and leaders are continuously growing and adapting. The synergy would be incredible. Teams would be more innovative, more resilient, and better equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. As we continue to emphasize the importance of employee development, let's not forget the critical role that leadership plays in organizational success. By upskilling and reskilling our leaders, we're not just investing in individuals – we're investing in the future of our entire organization. It's time to close the gap and create a culture of continuous learning at all levels. The results, I believe, will speak for themselves. Dr. Taunya Lowe discussed the importance of results-driven strategies, leadership teams, and customer experiences in developing high-performing organizations. She also introduced EEVA Online's virtual assistants as a solution to help manage overwhelming email and administrative tasks, allowing individuals to focus on more important matters. Lastly, she began a discussion on tackling communication issues in the workplace, promising to provide practical exercises in the episode. The Cost of Poor Communication in Workplaces Dr. Taunya Lowe highlighted the significant impact of ineffective communication on workplace productivity and financial performance. He cited a report indicating that poor communication costs companies with 100 employees an average of $420,000 annually. The doctor emphasized the persistent nature of this issue, even with increased technology. However, he also noted that communication training and development could lead to a 19% increase in overall team performance, as indicated by a study in the Journal of Applied Psychology. Active Listening Exercise: For everyone: Practice the "HEAR" technique: Halt: Stop what you're doing and give full attention. Engage: Make eye contact and show you're listening. Anticipate: Look forward to what the speaker will say. Replay: Summarize what you've heard to ensure understanding. Try this in your next meeting or one-on-one conversation. Feedback Sandwich for Leaders: When giving feedback, use the sandwich method: Start with a positive observation. Address the area for improvement. End with an encouraging statement or another positive point. Example: "Your presentation was well-researched. I'd like to see more eye contact with the audience. Overall, your delivery is improving significantly." "I" Statements for Team Members: When expressing concerns, use "I" statements to avoid sounding accusatory: Instead of: "You never listen to my ideas." Try: "I feel frustrated when I don't have the opportunity to share my ideas fully." Practice crafting "I" statements about a current work situation. Question Framing Exercise: For leaders: Instead of asking "Why didn't you finish the project?", try "What obstacles are preventing the project's completion?" For team members: Instead of saying "This won't work," ask "How can we modify this to achieve our goals?" Practice reframing three common workplace questions or statements. Empathy Mapping: Create an empathy map for a colleague or team member: What are they thinking and feeling? What are they seeing and hearing in their role? What are their pain points and potential gains? This exercise can help both leaders and team members understand different perspectives. Non-Verbal Communication Awareness: For one day, pay close attention to your non-verbal cues: Body posture Facial expressions Tone of voice Gestures Reflect on how these might be perceived by others and adjust accordingly. Clear Expectation Setting: Leaders: Use the SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) to set clear expectations for a current project. Team members: Write down your understanding of your role and responsibilities, then compare with your manager's view. Appreciation Circle: In your next team meeting, have each person express genuine appreciation for another team member's recent contribution. Conflict Resolution Role-Play: With a colleague, role-play a difficult conversation: Person A presents a concern Person B practices active listening and empathy Together, brainstorm solutions Switch roles and repeat Communication Style Assessment: Take a communication style assessment (like DISC) and discuss the results with your team. Understanding different communication styles can greatly improve workplace interactions. Visit Our Sponsors: Access thousands of audiobooks and podcasts anytime, anywhere. According to a Harvard Business Review study, leaders who dedicated at least 15 minutes a day to reflection and strategic thinking were 30% more likely to make successful decisions. Set aside 15 minutes daily for strategic thinking. 2. Gallup reports that employees who have regular check-ins with their managers are 3 times more likely to be engaged at work. Implement a weekly team check-in focused on goals and obstacles. 3. A study by MentorcliQ found that 84% of Fortune 500 companies have mentoring programs, citing improved retention and productivity. Start a mentorship program within your department. 4. LinkedIn's 2023 Workplace Learning Report states that 94% of employees would stay at a company longer if it invested in their learning and development. Create a personal development plan for each team member. 5. As leadership expert John C. Maxwell says, "Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn." Introduce a "failure of the week" share to foster a culture of learning. 6. Deloitte's 2023 Global Human Capital Trends report found that only 14% of organizations feel ready to address leadership succession and continuity. Dedicate time each month to review and update your succession plan. 7. A study in the Journal of Workplace Learning found that cross-departmental learning programs can increase innovation by up to 17%. Implement a cross-departmental shadowing program. 8. Warren Buffett once said, "The best investment you can make is in yourself." Start a book club focusing on leadership and organizational culture. 9. Google's famous "20% time" policy, which allowed employees to spend 20% of their time on side projects, led to the creation of Gmail and Google News. Introduce "innovation hours" where team members can work on passion projects. 10. McKinsey reports that companies that lead in customer experience outperform laggards by nearly 80%. Establish a feedback loop with your clients or customers to stay agile. Choose at least one of these ideas - or come up with your own - and commit to implementing it this season. Dr. Taunya uses the retirement of Mitch McConnell to discuss the importance of succession planning. "One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” said Mitch McConnell. At 82, McConnell has made history as the Senate's longest-serving leader. As he prepared to step down November 2023, he leaves behind a legacy of leadership. He acknowledges, “Father Time remains undefeated. I am no longer the young man sitting in the back, hoping colleagues would remember my name. It is time for the next generation of leadership.” However, are they prepared? Was there a succession plan? Who will develop the next generation? The departure of long-serving government officials raises concerns about the impact on the organization's future. The absence of succession planning threatens continuity, stability, and institutional knowledge. Succession planning is a strategic necessity, ensuring a talent pipeline is ready to fill key roles, reducing risks of sudden vacancies. It involves cultivating future leaders, identifying rising stars, and providing essential tools, training, and mentorship. Effective succession planning is ongoing and adapts alongside a leader's tenure, fostering a culture of continuous learning and talent management. This safeguards against the loss of institutional knowledge, ensuring a seamless transition of power. In today’s fast-paced world, the need for succession planning is urgent. It’s about securing a resilient and sustainable future. As we bid farewell to decades of leadership, let's commit to grooming the next generation of leaders to carry the torch forward with confidence and competence. I hope you enjoyed this episode. Dr. Lowe excitedly shares about Conscious Leadership. Picture this: the traditional top-down, one-size-fits-all leadership style? It’s gradually taking a back seat. Why? Because conscious leadership is in the driver's seat now, guiding organizations through the complexities of the modern world. So, what’s all the buzz about? Conscious leadership isn’t just another leadership style (because as you know, styles go out of style); it’s a mindset (mindset shifts are stable foundations for growth or stagnation) Conscious leadership is a way of approaching leadership that’s all about self-awareness, empathy, and seeing the bigger picture. Imagine leaders who not only balance the financial sheets but also understand the intricate web of relationships between employees, customers, communities, and the environment. That’s conscious leadership! Be sure and grab a copy of Results Driven Organizations: The 4 Keys to a High-Performance Workplace https://a.co/d/iqn3xcK AND be sure to grab our special gift

Adaptive leadership a leadership model that was introduced by Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky. Heifetz defines it as the act of mobilizing a group of individuals to handle tough challenges and emerge triumphant in the end.
a practical leadership framework that helps individuals and organizations adapt and thrive in challenging environments. September was Self–Care Awareness Month.
It is a time to remind us that taking care of ourselves, first and foremost, is essential. Self-care is often neglected in our everyday lives. We all tend to put others’ needs before our own, even our jobs. It’s crucial to remember, that we cannot fill another’s cup from our own empty vessel. While getting a massage or taking a walk are beautiful examples of taking time for our well-being or I prefer to call that maintenance. Self-care can be more expansive than that.

In this episode Dr. Taunya Lowe talks about Mental Health Awareness.
Mental health is a hot topic right now and that is great because the more we talk about it the more we can eradicate the stigma.
Mental health involves one’s social, emotional, and psychological well-being and affects thoughts, feelings, and actions. When one has positive mental health, they are better equipped to handle stress, be more productive, and realize their full potential.
Employee well-being has always been a concern for CEOs the pandemic has only magnified it. Prior to the pandemic employee stressors included individual debt, and other financial issues, divorce, childcare, eldercare, job pressures and doing more with less.
