There comes a time in every person’s life, the existential question is asked of oneself: “Who Am I?” I maintain that every sentient being on the planet is programmed to ask this question. It relates directly to the truth of our oneness. After all, we are on a journey seeking to get back home. What I find most interesting about the question, “Who Am I?” is the fact that the answer is in the question, similar to the anagram Now-Won, which is the word NOW spelled backwards. This reminds us that when we are in the Now, we have Won our presence in any of life’s moments. Who Am I, when read in reverse, is I AM.

What are our greatest fears? I am quite certain that if you polled one million people on this planet, you would find death at the top of the list. It is not so much that we spend our waking hours up right and solely focused on this fear. It is the movie score that is playing very low and distant in the background of your “Movie Mind.” I full-heartedly love going to the movies. Most days, music is constantly playing in my mind and heart for whatever is manifesting in my life. If I am playing with my daughter, a sweet string section fills the moment.

When I first learned about goal setting, I wrote them down. I even thought if I wrote down all the steps it would take to accomplish the goal in reverse, I would have a fool proof plan. It was not until I abandoned this practice that the truth was revealed to me. When I was in my thirties, each year on my birthday I would set five or six goals. I loved working on my Mac computer with the list of goals. Using creative fonts and colors to liven up the page that would hold all my hopes for this year’s list, I remember the uneasy and restless feeling I got every year setting these goals, not really accomplishing many of the previous year’s attempts and having uncertainty as my companion on the entire journey. Why was this such a hopeful yet hopeless process?

Have you ever thought of someone and how they are feeling, then out of the blue they call you? In 2016, I had a thought about a client with whom I had not seen or heard from in many weeks. I had been the instrument that enabled him to acquire a great win-fall of abundance. Working as his property manager, I helped him for six years. Then he wanted to sell his town-home. I attempted to do just that but to no avail. I took the real estate off the market due to the fact that it was over-priced.

Success leaves clues. It makes perfect sense to not reinvent the wheel. When one person has a loving connection or union with another, it is logical to repeat the steps to that outcome. Thomas Troward (1847-1916), an English author, observes the mind-set that an optimistic person would endeavor to take when charged with inspiration. I imagine that the team at NASA never thought, We cannot go to the moon, it is just too far away. Likewise, Christopher Columbus’ focus was not on an unknown adventure that just might yield the discovery of the new world. Energy flows where your focus goes. We get what we think about all day and all night long. Yet, in a relationship, this energy more often than not, seems to get misguided and focused on what we do not want.

If human beings can reconcile this mystery within themselves, life will become a balanced abundant existence. The counter intuitiveness of life can seem confusing and disjointed. This is why being a Now-ist is essential to living. One must learn to live in the physical restraints of time and the infinite oneness of the spirit. When you can be in the present moment with all of its variety and challenge, knowing that you are ONE, you have just mastered your life. Time, space, and circumstance will not hold sway over you.

There is an ancient story in the Buddhist tradition that offers up a great teaching on the power of connection, or in this case, disconnection. For in order to know what you want, it is important to know what you do not want. Buddha was well-known for his ability to respond to evil with good. There was a man who knew about his reputation and he traveled miles and miles to test Buddha. When he arrived and stood before Buddha, he verbally abused him, he insulted him, and he challenged him; without letting up, he did everything he could to offend Buddha. Buddha was unmoved. He simply turned to the man and said, “May I ask you a question?” The man responded, “Well, what?” Buddha said, “If someone offers you a gift and you decline to accept it, to whom then does it belong?” The man replied, “Then it belongs to the person who offered it.” Buddha smiled, “That is correct. One of my favorite books of all time is Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, which has been translated into sixty-nine languages. It is a brilliant tale of a shepherd boy, Santiago, in search of buried treasure. He does not know what the treasure is or if he will be able to surmount the obstacle along the way. A journey that starts out seeking worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasure found within.This truly is every person’s story. We are all out seeking to, make it, in the world. We are all trying to create a life that will fulfill our needs, wants, and desires, focused mainly on a world of form and recognition. I was this boy most of my life, until an event occurred that changed my “Personal Legend” as it is called in The Alchemist. A Personal Legend is your life’s spiritual purpose.
