It’s A TRIBE Thing — Behind The Scenes of Successful Membership Sites: Recent Episodes

Stu McLaren

There is a BIG trend brewing that’s revolutionizing the way business is being done. Big companies like Netflix, Amazon, Apple and traditional companies like Walmart are jumping on this too.

But so are thousands of others - and they’re doing it by shifting to a recurring revenue model.

Meaning, more entrepreneurs than ever before have found a way to incorporate a membership or monthly subscription into their business model - and it’s transforming the way they operate forever.

No longer do they feel the pressure and stress of having to find new customers every single month. Instead, they just take care of the people who already bought from them and the monthly, recurring revenue keeps building month after month.

So how are they doing it? How are they marketing their membership sites? How are they keeping their members happy and paying month after month? And how have they built an incredibly tight bond with their tribe and online community?

That's what our show host Shelli Varela explores in this podcast.

You'll hear from people building low-stress membership business in just about every niche market you can think of. From photography and calligraphy to dog training, music, art, fitness, well being, self-improvement, blogging, interior decorating, day trading, meal planning, lesson planning and so many more.

You'll hear from authors, speakers, coaches, consultants, influencers, teachers and business owners who are all leveraging their existing knowledge and influence and transforming it into passive monthly income.

This isn't luck. There is a repeatable formula for producing a growing subscription income… and we'll show you what it is within the episodes of this show.

So if you're thinking you'd like to have your own source of recurring revenue each month or, you already have a membership site that you want to take to the next level, subscribe to this show today. Each week, your host, Shelli Varela, will be breaking down their success and uncovering the real story of how they did it… and how you can too!

The Recurring Revolution is here… the question is, will you be part of it? Subscribe to the show today!

When she finished graduate school, Mary Gilkerson had a portfolio and an MFA — but not the experience, skills, or tools to support herself as a working artist. She spent the next 20 years teaching painting to women all over the world, but also found herself at a crossroads: she could either stay in academia or become more active as her art career picked up momentum.

She then started teaching painting online, but found herself challenged by launching multiple times per year. Now, at MaryGilkerson.com she takes a more holistic approach to teaching aspiring and working artists, including the skills you need to grow and run your artistic business.

Today, Mary joins the podcast to share her journey from aspiring fine artist in New York to where she is today, how her great grandfather taught her about entrepreneurship, and how the membership model allows her to offer more than just painting classes while giving her the freedom she needs to create.

Kasey Hope is the owner of P’zazz Art Studio in Prattville, Alabama. After almost 12 years of teaching, her classes were maxed out beyond capacity. Furthermore, because her studio is located near a military base, many of her students were often moving away.

To reach a wider audience and keep in touch with families as they left, Kasey created Whatever Letter — a membership course that teaches hand lettering, fosters deep relationships, and builds community outside of her studio.

Today, Kasey joins the podcast to talk about the early versions of her membership site and what held her back, how TRIBE helped her to better serve her students, and how she uses Whatever Letter to collaborate, give to charity, and connect with people like never before.

As she was designing her first membership site, Nancy Case received a piece of advice: launch a membership around something you already have going on. She did just that, and now sells thousands of pounds of gourmet salt water taffy through a membership box service called Taffy 2 You. She sends her subscribers three bags of taffy a month - one for eating, one for sharing, and one for gifting and giving, organically growing her subscriber base along the way.

However, Nancy wasn’t always certain that something so niche could find a mass audience. Relying on both her friends to hold her accountable and a handful of marketing techniques, she was able to go from soft-launching with a small audience of buyers to having a waitlist for new subscribers, all of whom love to gift, give, and eat gourmet saltwater taffy.

Today, Nancy joins the podcast to talk about why the membership club model can work for almost anything, the power of memory and storytelling, and why you never need to worry about being perfect.

In 2017, after running a business farming organic vegetables on a large scale, Michael Kilpatrick came to a realization: there’s a massive need for great education in the farming industry. Many aspiring farmers know how to grow vegetables, but few understand how to market or sell their products, build businesses, hire teams, and manage people.

He founded In The Field Consultants to help independent, organic farmers succeed in the United States, where the agriculture industry is far more supportive of massive monocrop farms. After realizing that he was providing the same resources and tools to so many of his clients, he launched a membership program. He currently serves about 170 farmers internationally, many of whom have doubled their year-to-year revenue without spending more hours on their farms. His membership service allows him to bring in a recurring revenue stream while providing greater value to his clients — and allowing him more time with his young family.

Today, Michael joins the podcast to talk about the unique challenges that so many independent farmers face, how he leveraged his unique combination of skills to launch his membership service, and how he scaled in the era of Blue Apron and Amazon Fresh.
