They say, "you miss one hundred percent of the shots you don't take," "you have to be in it to win it," or "You can't win if you don't play." Often people, and Christians specifically, realize that the game isn't a game at all--it's real life--and life for eternity. For the truly searching, the tough question is, "Can I know God's will?" The answer to that question may not be as challenging as it seems. Let's chase after Him and learn about his purpose for our lives.
We all experience hard times. At times it may seem that the bad things that happen, happen to those that have done nothing wrong to deserve it. There is so much evil all around us, is there any good? Can a Good God exist? This Sunday we will take time to dive into this really hard question to understand the goodness of God despite the evil around us. Jesus responds to the hubris of two Apostles (James and John) who ask for a favored position in heaven. The truth is that Jesus reveals what that request will require--something that first only He could do. In fact, in the process, he shows us the effectiveness of approaching things from the opposite perspective….

Are we seeing things through the lens that comes from the view presented by the word of God? Often in big challenges or transitions in life, it seems our nature to notice the bad and extremely difficult, rather than the good God has brought. The Apostle Paul, while in prison, teaches us to Rejoice Always, Be nice to each other, and always look through God’s lense. Doing this will help us progress and find freedom from the things that may hold us back in our transition, relationships with each other, and God.
It’s hard to say goodbye. There are good reasons for that. But there's also a unique measure of power, love, and life to be found within that simple word. Join Pastor David for his final word to Capital Church as he talks about why’s it so hard to say “goodbye" and why “goodbye” just sounds different when a follower of Jesus says it.
When Jesus called people to follow him, he did so to START something good in their lives; right then. He was inviting them to step into God’s beautiful vision & plan for their lives: a full and abundant, rewarding life of flourishing. In the final week of our series, we’re talking about the reward of following Jesus. Specifically: how to reap that reward…in this life. Starting today.
When Jesus explained the path to flourishing, he included some challenging calls to obedience, to high productivity, to positive attitudes, to effective prayer, and to sacrifice love for those you make not like. Yet, along with these impossible goals he also promised a source of power to accomplish them all. In week 3 of our “Flourish” series, Pastor David introduces the power-Source for our purpose and explains how to ‘tap in’ …and how to ‘stay’ in.
Jesus promises a life of flourishing. But not one without loss. In part two of our “Flourish” series, Pastor David addresses the big question: ‘What will I lose if I choose to follow Jesus?’ The church hasn’t always dealt well with that question. Some don’t deal with it - as if there’s no cost to following Jesus. Others speak of nothing else - as if following Jesus is signing up for misery. Both bad approaches bind us to living okay-lives with minimal-impact. We’ll discover that the second step to true flourishing is to deal with the question directly.
God has a vision for your life: for you to flourish and help others do the same. Most of us, however, would admit that we’ve been living short of “flourishing.” Our lives are not as full or fruitful as all that. But Jesus says, they can be! …and He has a plan to get us there. On the first Sunday of 2021, Pastor David casts God’s vision for a new kind of year and a new kind of life. We’ll discover that the first step to flourishing has something to do with knowing your true self - and that has everything to do with knowing Jesus.
We all love to hear “thank you” when we’ve done something for another person. It never gets old. But on the other side of the coin, when someone has done something for you, there are times when merely saying “thank you” doesn’t seem enough. Sometimes you feel so deeply grateful to that you’ve got to do more than say it… you’ve got to show it. This week, Pastor David concludes the “Thank Full” message series by talking about what a ‘heart of gratitude’ looks like in action.
"You win some and you lose some." It's a well known expression. But it's not in the Bible. In fact, the Bible insists that there is victory for every battle you're facing in life. The challenge is getting yourself into a position to see and experience the win. This Sunday, Pastor David unpacks the amazing story of King Jehoshaphat to show us how to bring victory into view in our own lives.
When a stranger does something kind for you, you instinctively say “thank you.” It’s common courtesy. It's almost natural. But are your expressions of gratitude as free-flowing at home? When kinds things are common, is gratitude more rare? How about with God? Is it possible to become so accustomed to God’s goodness that we start expecting it and stop expressing our gratefulness for it? This Sunday, as we examine the difference between being glad for God’s gifts and being grateful, we’ll learn how to unleash the blessing behind the gifts that God gives.
This world certainly has enough stress in it to fill a whole lifetime. The question of “will I ever feel safe again” has been asked so often throughout history. Sometimes there’s a lull, but every generation, every decade causes us to ask, “will we ever feel safe again?” All of us want to feel safe, but the truth is, there is no safe space. Nothing on this earth can provide us a safe place because we live in an ugly world.
Relational issues can create stress that affects so many other areas in our life. It’s like quicksand, the longer we are in it, the deeper we sink. But freedom is possible. There’s a part that God plays and a part we must play. This week we’ll learn the freedom-giving of forgiveness and receive tools to let the offense roll off so that joy can roll in.
