We began a few years ago with a weekly College Football Show called the CFB Pick Em' Show every Thursday during the college football season. Over the past 7-months we've been playing "This is your life" with Tom and having him re-tell the stories of his youth, his early days as a teacher and coach, his hey days with a top program, his struggle to maintain it and his advance through a career that has made for a Hall of Fame career.
In this the "Lost" episode (technical issues with a computer and poor recording) we wrap up our long journey through Tom's days as a high school teacher and his transition into retirement. Though he's not active as a coach or educator, that doesn't mean he's not active.

There are a few teams that might come up and challenge including Boston College, Wake Forest and perhaps we might get a flash from Louisville. However, the likes of Florida State and Virginia Tech, formerly football powers are now basketball schools and their football tradition tarnished.

Big news in College Football as Texas & Oklahoma secretly talk with the SEC about coming over? This big shift could send shock waves through the rest of the college football landscape! We start with that and then get down to business with the previews of the Independents and then Mountain West.
Notre Dame played as part of the ACC last year and now have a tougher road to hoe as an independent this year. Could the shift that's coming in college football force them to the ACC full time?
The Mountain West is best out west with the Western division the stronger of the two. Nevada is a strong Top 25 contender this year with lots of NFL caliber talent on the roster including QB Carson Strong (pictured). Both San Jose State and San Diego State will be hot on their heels. Meanwhile a new coach at Boise State has anyone guessing what they might look like moving forward. As the cream of the Mountain Division (and usually the entire conference) they too could be on the move to a new conference as dominos start to fall in the re-shuffle we all know is coming!

For this first episode we talk about the Naming & Imaging Licensing ruling and it's affect on the college football landscape. We also talk about the transfer portal being the new normal, even for the smaller conferences such as the Sun Belt Conference and Conference USA.
Our preview starts with the Sun Belt which had one of the bigger stories of the Group of 5 last year with Coastal Carolina's amazing near undefeated run and (11-1) mark. The East division is the tougher of the two in this league including Coastal, Appalachian State and two other bowl teams; Georgia State and Georgia Southern. Meanwhile, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns are the best team in the west and the rest may struggle.
Meanwhile in Conference USA the West is best and the UAB Blazers will have their hands full with UT-San Antonio. The East is leaner, but Marshall, Florida Atlantic and Western Kentucky offer some intriguing teams that could compete for bowl games.

Everyone has a story, it's just that some are more interesting than others. Such is the case of educator, mentor and Hall of Fame basketball coach Tom Rettig. We've been exploring his career in the class room and on the hardwood through the years.
In this episode we talk about what was essentially a crescendo on his time as the Tippecanoe High School Red Devils Girls coach. A pair of good, competitive and lively teams that, like many of his other signature teams overcame struggles, a tough schedule and got better as the year went on. The seasons of 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 both were 15 and 17-win campaigns respectively, the latter winning 12-stright until beaten in the tournament. It also includes the period of time in transitioning out of the SRC to the Central Buckeye Conference and Tipp winning it the first year with a perfect (10-0) record in league play.

Everyone has a story, it's just that some are more interesting than others. So it is with coach, teacher, mentor and friend Tom Rettig, the Ohio Hall of Fame high school basketball coach and former Tippecanoe Red Devils girls basketball coach.
As we continue our second season, we come to a career cross roads as Tom's teams struggled in the late 1990's. The program however rebounded after an attempt to remove him as head coach in 1998. However, with friends, family, students and former players alike rallying around him (thanks to "Mrs. Coach") his job status was not in doubt after all.
From struggle to hard work and a rebound in talent, his Tippecanoe teams made a huge turn around in the years after. At least they did in the regular season. A couple of tough pills to swallow (as in tournament seeding draw pills) ended each season short despite promise and great expectation.

We've been discussing the life & times of the coach, rolling through the years of his career, focusing mostly on his time with the Tippecanoe High School Girls Basketball team. In this episode we talk of some lean years during and in the immediate aftermath of his time as Athletic Director for the Red Devils.
This period of time is marked by single digit wins, little tournament success and a trying and difficult period. However, as he explains it, it wasn't any less satisfying where it concerned effort, courage and the players he enjoyed.
Recorded for the first time face to face in his Tipp City residence, this 40-minutes was a real joy. In this conversation we talk about the 1985-86 Lady Red Devils who finished with a (24-3) record and a magical run to the State Finals. Tom talks about the details of how the team came together despite, in his opinion, not necessarily liking one another all the time, dealing with off-the court rumors of trips to The Bug Inn or Lost C Lounge. An 18-game winning streak propelled the team to the State Final Four match-up against powerhouse Akron Hobin and then the Championship game against Millersburg West Holmes--a team with a 100+ game winning streak at the time.

Such is the case of Tippecanoe High School class of 1986 graduate Jim Dabbelt.
Dabbelt is the author of The Dabbelt Report, the ultimate in promotion and recognition of girls high school basketball players in Ohio which he's produced since 2003. Dabbelt was a student of Tom's and was encouraged by him to be the team statistician in 1985-86 and has worked as a writer of high school, college and pro athletics over the years. It was Tom that encouraged him to put together Jim's passion for writing, sports and the girls game which was underserved in the journalistic world. He also had a front row seat for the 1985-86 season which had Tippecanoe in the State title game in Akron.

As we progress in our time line, Tom has arrived at Tippecanoe in 1979 as an English teacher and Boys Basketball assistant as well as assistant football and baseball coach. An eagerness to move back to SW Ohio had led him to the job and in 1982 a unique opportunity.
As former coach Jane Tollefson was pregnant, Tom makes the choice to coach the Tippecanoe Girls basketball program. One lure: being able to coach his daughters for a few years.

Everyone has a story, it's just that some are more interesting. Such is the case of Tom Rettig teacher and coach. In an extra large 1-hour episode we continue the latest biography podcast with the long time educator. We pick up from last week's conversation and move to the formative years of his career in the 1960's & 70's.
Our conversation starts with his time at Bowling Green State University and balancing a relationship and then young family with education and then work. Early on, Tom took on challenges in wanting to find opportunities where he could advance but was also in a good fit of being needed. From Lucas High School and coaching baseball, to coaching tennis at Dayton Fairview and then boys basketball at Holland Springfield and then Cardinal Stritch in Toledo.
Through it all, Tom was attending coaching camps and working camps to increase his knowledge and to gain experience in the coaching fraternity. This included working Don Donaher's camp at the University of Dayton and then, getting an opportunity in the 1970's to work legendary coach John Wooden's UCLA camp and forging a relationship with the Wizard of Westwood.
Thoughts of a college coaching career, however, fizzled when he wasn't able to deliver a future college basketball hall of famer as a bonus to his employment.

One of my favorite teachers, I've been blessed to keep a cordial relationship with Tom since high school when I first accidentally wondered into his classroom by mistake as a freshman. The following year, I did belong in his class and it was a transformational year. His encouragement and support was key in the rest of my education.
We'll explore the entire story of Tom Rettig from growing up in Lima, Ohio to his gravitation towards educating and coaching. Our conversations will include stories and recollections from his career winning on the hard wood and his love affair with basketball as well as his passion for teaching and young people.

The Big Ten is BACK!!! The Big XII is pretty awful. And, so is your host who accidentally cut off the program early and we had to add a second part.
We talk about the news from Tuesday of the return of the Big Ten Conference after their bumbling and botching of the once canceled season. Wyatt Davis & Shaun Wade will return for the Buckeyes which angers Meeeeshigan. Then, the Wolverweenies got some bad news with the departure of QB Dylan McCaffrey.
As we dig into the Big XII, we find it's a pretty garbage conference outside of Texas & Oklahoma. Listen for Part 2 for the Sooners preview.
The NFL? Really? Why not. Our Lions & Bungals might stink but we can still talk about who might make the play-offs this year. Seven teams will make the post season from each conference this season which is too many.
We talk about each division and some broad thoughts about who you might be talking about this season when they actually talk about football in between social justice issues which is what everyone watches the NFL for.
I like Tom Brady to lead the Bucs to the Super Bowl and lose to Kansas City. Big B like Baltimore over Seattle. Surely these won't be winning picks...but give us a listen anyway.
The Atlantic Coast Conference cannot be won, it can only be lost. Well, that's what we say anyway. It's Clemson and everyone else actually. Even with the addition of Notre Dame, this conference is all about Dabo's Tigers.

We've been talking about Kevin's unique story from his birth in Dublin, Ireland, rearing in Manchester, England and immigration to Florida in the early 1980's. We've talked about his family, his career path and the founding of the Pub, one of the oldest Irish pubs in Florida. In this episode, we talk about surviving 2004's Hurricane Charlie, the potential demolition of the building (while staff were in it) and when he took on an investor and they eventually locked him out and tried to take over his pub.

We've been exploring an incredible life story with Kevin and the founding and forming of the Pub. As we move into the late 90's and early 2000's, we now explore some of the concepts that Kevin wanted to instill in his Pub, including the idea of "we" with his staff and trying to understand what is called the 80-10-10 rule. The early days of the pub also included some interesting bar staff. We explore that, the nearly immediate need for expansion (a theme that would keep going for a long, long time!) and talk about the early days of the Pub.

The pub is in it's 24th year--a minor miracle--and it's been done by the will of this man and a dedicated army of family, valued workers, friends and fiercely loyal patrons. Many people call Kevin a friend and the joke at the pub goes "I know Kevin!" I have been blessed for 7-years to know him and he's allowing me to record his memories in his own voice.
