Tony digs into why all the most successful camera companies, including Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax, and Fujifilm, are Japanese.

SPONSOR: Go to http://squarespace.com/chelsea & save 10% off your first website or domain with code “chelsea”

The answer is complex, with 4 major turning points: 1) In the 1940s, WWII's divided occupation of Germany set it back, while the United States' occupation of Japan seems to have helped the Japanese camera companies 2) In the 1950s, the Korean war brought many photojournalists to the US-occupied Japan, and David Douglas Duncan, in particular, had great success with Japanese lenses on their Leica cameras. In the US, Joe Erinreich promoted Nikon heavily. 3) In the 1990s and 2000s, US digital camera companies (such as Kodak and Polaroid) failed to transition to the digital era. 4) In the 2010s, the transition from conventional cameras to smartphones saw non-Japanese camera companies (such as Samsung) exit the market. Japanese camera companies didn't have the freedom to easily exit the industry because of the legal challenges around layoffs. The X-Tra Battery Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/x-tra/the-camera-battery-re-invented/) promises twice the battery life for your camera - but CanonRumors (http://canonrumors.com) discovered that the CEO's photo seems to be that of a stock model and the name doesn't seem connected to any real person. We dug deeper and found the true CEO, and the company's real address. Guess what? It's not a California company like they claimed.

DPReview, Petapixel, F-Stoppers and Canon Rumors, among others, publicized this kickstarter project that seems to have a fake CEO. F-Stoppers and Canon Rumors did sponsored posts, while DP Review and Petapixel.com's profits were based on advertising. How could these trusted outlets publicize a scam?

There's more to it than that, we found, and the real problem might have been calling it a scam without doing enough research. What can we do to prevent such problems in the future?

Did you know Kodak is STILL a billion-dollar company? This is the most overwhelming camera history video we have made. Kodak's founder, George Eastman, was interesting, brilliant, and strange enough to have an entire podcast dedicated to him. Did you know he was related to Emily Dickinson and the Colgate toothpaste people? Did you know he tried photography exactly once before realizing he wanted to improve the process? Kodak started with dry plates, evolved to offer film (and cameras to sell that film), became a monopoly, invented the digital camera, and then went BANKRUPT! WHY? Was it Kodak's fault? Could things have been different? Tony and I dug through entirely too much information, talked too long, had margaritas, and tried to sum it all up in an hour. There were too many bits of information so here are our Sources and Citations: https://docs.google.com/document/d/14UqtdRIJkVTcLX-_NrMOtbMrLId06j5Yt6ghse5yJJk/edit?usp=sharing

The JPEG file format is 30 years old now. A new tech, HEIF (stored in HEIC files and used in HAVC or h.265 video) offers more than 50% better compression AND better image quality, thanks to 10-bit color. Apple adopted HEIF, HEIC, and HEVC in 2017 for the iPhone... and NO OTHER CAMERA COMPANY HAS FOLLOWED. Just by switching file formats, your storage costs could be cut in half. You could buy memory cards that were half the size and half the speed. Your buffer would last longer and clear faster. In this podcast, I'll talk about the JPEG file format and how WE can convince camera companies to adopt this incredibly important new technology.

Nikon is expecting to lose $92 MILLION in 2020 on its camera business. That's bad, but it gets worse - Nikon is planning to reduce R&D, so we can expect the rate of their technical advances to decrease. Nikon is also predicting that their market share will decrease, and the total market size is decreasing, so their revenue will inevitably drop.

We believe Nikon can pull through this, but their current plans might not be the right plans. We believe they should cater to existing DSLR customers rather than trying to push everyone to their mirrorless Z system. We believe the Z system is an area for long-term growth, but producing F-mount products will help raise cash to keep the business running in the short term. Finally, we believe Nikon should INVEST and take an even bigger loss for a couple of years, allowing them to grow their market share instead of cutting it.

In the 2000s and early 2010s, Sony’s cameras were TERRIBLE. All proceeds (plus more) to http://sahareducation.com PLEASE GIVE
SOURCES and detailed corrections at http://sdp.io/sharbatsources (it was too long to fit into a description)

CORRECTIONS

There is one major correction to the video: I now believe Sharbat was not wearing a burqa when McCurry entered the school in their 1984 photoshoot. McCurry’s team has confirmed this. A burqa would have been covering both her eyes and face; Sharbat made an effort to cover her face but was not at the time wearing a veil that would have covered her eyes. My source indicated that she removed her burqa at McCurry’s request, but the source was referring to the 2002 photoshoot, not the 1984 photoshoot. I sincerely regret the mistake and appreciate McCurry’s team for bringing it to my attention.

To clarify, Sharbat covered her face with her scarf to protect it from McCurry’s view. As an adult looking back on the photoshoot, she expressed feeling angry at the time because she was confronted by a strange man and being scared and sad at learning that the photograph had been published. That all stands - the only part I’m correcting is that she was not wearing a veil to cover her eyes.

Near the end of the video, I try to tell Sharbat’s story and I say that her mother was killed in a bombing in Afghanistan. That’s how McCurry tells the story, but according to Sharbat, her mother died of appendicitis. I’m sorry for the mistake, and for your losses, Sharbat.

I also indicate that Sharbat ran away from the photoshoot out of fear. My recollection of her being afraid was based on the caption on the cover of National Geographic. However, Sharbat’s adult recollection of her feelings in the moment was that she was angry, not afraid.

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION

Steve McCurry's Afghan Girl (published in National Geographic) is one of the most famous photos of all time. I had planned to make a tribute video celebrating the impact of the photo, but as I researched it, I came across new interviews with Sharbat Gula from the past 2 years. Those interviews revealed the other side of the story, and that side was really disturbing.

TIMELINE OF THIS VIDEO

2/25/2019: We reach out to National Geographic and Steve McCurry's team for input.

2/27/2019: Neither NatGeo nor McCurry reply to our messages, so we record and publish this video without their feedback.

3/4/2019: Bonnie McCurry (Steve's sister and president of McCurry Studios) reaches out indicating that she feels there are factual errors in the video. However, she does not provide any specific information. We immediately make the video private to give McCurry's team the opportunity to create a detailed list so that we can update the video and make it as accurate as possible.

3/7/2019: Bonnie provides a list of 3 items she feels are incorrect in the video.

3/8/2019: You can see us address those concerns at this follow-up video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q_NAEaiC9M. We also made this video public once again, in its original form (including mistakes), for complete transparency.

Many photographers love the Micro Four-thirds mount for its small size and big feature set... But increasingly, full-frame mirrorless cameras are a similar size and produce undeniably superior results. With Canon and Nikon joining Sony in the full-frame mirrorless market, and Fuji creating value-oriented APS-C cameras, I think it’s inevitable that those lens mounts will lure most new photographers. Additionally, many existing Micro Four-Thirds photographers will be lured to competing camera systems because of the cleaner images, better low-light capabilities, and a wider selection of fast lenses. If nothing else, people think full-frame sensors always produce better images, even if that’s not always true. The first round of the mirrorless wars are over - Canon released the EOS R, Nikon released the Z7 (and announced the Z6), Panasonic announced the S1 and S1R, and Fuji launched the X-T3. We were there at the events as the camera companies battled to win back the full-frame market from Sony. We think some of the camera companies did a great job, while others made some serious mistakes.

We talk about 5 steps to success that we just totally made up based on our own life experiences, so take it for what it's worth.

1: Define your success. What specific accomplishments will make you happy? Where do you want to be in life, for money, lifestyle, relationships, and leisure time? Which of those are you willing to give up?

2: Know yourself. Evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses; we all have a few.

3: Build a team. Surround yourself with people who complement your skills. If you suck at something, find people who are good at that, and trust them to help you.

4: Make a 5-year plan. Know where you want to be in 5 years. Then, make smaller steps at 1-year, 6-months, 1 month, and TODAY. Yes, if you're going to be successful, it starts today. What are you going to do RIGHT NOW?

5: Re-evaluate and reset. One thing we can promise is that your plans won't go exactly as you hope. The world will change without your permission. Your team will fail you. You'll fail yourself. That's OK; you roll with those punches. It's OK to change your plan at any point.

If you feel like you've already found some success, congrats! We'd love to hear your success story in the comments (including challenges that you ran into along the way).

We explain Fair Use which allows people to use pictures for free under some conditions. Specifically, it provides exemptions for commentary, search engines, criticism, parody, news, research, and scholarship. While it's never black-and-white, courts make fair use judgment calls based on four criteria:

1) Purpose of use (such as commercial, nonprofit, or educational). Uses can be more than one of these, such as both commercial and educational. Being commercial doesn't prevent fair use, and being educational or nonprofit doesn't give you fair use under all conditions.

2) The nature of the copyrighted work. The more creative it is, the harder it is to claim it under fair use. For example, a strictly informational picture of a skyline would be easier to claim under fair use than a creative model photoshoot or light painting.

3) The amount of the copyrighted work that's used. If you only show a small portion of a video, for example, odds are you can claim Fair Use. If you show an entire movie, you probably can't claim Fair Use.

4) The effect on the market for the copyrighted work. If you publish a movie for free and that stops people from paying to see that movie, it's almost certainly not fair use. However, if using a copyrighted work doesn't reduce the value of the work commercially, then it's more likely to be fair use.

Even if you stay the same, the world won't. My dad had basically the same job his whole life. As a pro photographer or videographer in 2018, you won't have the same luxury. Our jobs change every year, and if you don't keep up, you probably won't get to keep your job. If you're wildly successful today, you'll probably still be doing well next year - but in five years, everything you've built could be gone. My advice: Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Keep one foot firmly grounded in what's working for you today, but move your other foot forward. Keep track of upcoming trends by staying close to young people and watching how they interact with photos and videos. Experiment, jump on the latest trends and have fun.

Two years ago a company used one of our most well-known photos on the cover of an iPhone case without our permission. This was misleading in a couple of ways; the product seemed to advertise that it could produce the results in our picture (it couldn't) and some people assumed we were endorsing the product. The product was in some of the biggest stores in Australia and New Zealand, including Target, and selling for about $70 AUD.

We tried to reach out and handle it nicely without getting lawyers involved, but the people who stole our photo immediately lawyered-up and tried to ignore us.

So we sued them. That wasn't easy! We had to hire lawyers in Australia, and finding an attorney was REALLY HARD. The defendants tried to get off without paying a fair amount... but in the end, it cost them a lot.

How much did we get? We'll show you our bank statement.
