Carylee Carrington calls herself an “accidental author”. Carylee has been writing from a young age, writing poetry, drama shorts and plays. When Alisa's new baby sister, Claire, is born, she has no idea what to expect. Will Claire be nice? Will Alisa have to give away all of her toys? Will Mommy and Daddy stop loving Alisa because baby Claire is here?
“New Baby Coming, New Baby Here” is the perfect way to help your child understand that when your family grows, so does the amount of love in your home.
Her daughters inspired the author Sheryl Smiley-Oliphant to create this book. "I was inspired to write this book after I was pregnant with my second daughter. I wanted a way to teach her and show her the different changes that will be happening to the family and how her life will change with a baby for good and maybe sometimes not so good at times, but it's good to educate her and so that she is ready to be the best big sister ever."

Sheryl Smiley-Oliphant is a Theater Teacher, Director, and Children's Book Author. In addition, she runs the YouTube channel Activity Author, where she creates simple and practical learning activities using quick preparation and household items that keep kids entertained with creative activities and games.
She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband and daughters Kimberly and Malia.

Every kid is a bit goofy, and Mr. Maloof was no different. Until he grew up and became quite a grump. Then one day, a little blue hair appeared right on the top of his head. With his new blue hair and the help of some neighborhood kids, Mr. Maloof is reminded the importance of staying young at heart.
The author, Danielle Marietta, shares that the story is one that came to her in a moment while interacting with her three children. "My seven-year-old is very goofy. We are often hiding and popping out on each other and scaring each other, and sometimes we still have to remind him that there's a time and place to be silly and to have the giggles, and there are times not to. But on the whole of things, I think it's important to remember that it's still important to have fun, play, and be young as we grow up. Once you start feeling old, you'll start being old. And I don't want any of my kids ever to feel old."

Danielle Marietta is originally from Seattle but has been living in the DC metro area for the last 15 years. While studying at Howard University, she met her husband. And although Danielle has always enjoyed writing, she did not take it seriously until she spent hours on end reading to their three children. She writes for them.

What happened next became a viral video that let the world know how beautiful afro hair was and how important it is to love yourself and acknowledge beauty not just in yourself but others. Thank You, It's An Afro is a story of self-love and afro appreciation and a great book to celebrate being yourself and your God-given beauty. It is also a great introduction to afro hair for those that are unfamiliar with it.

Meet Cassidy Brianna Bridges, an actor, author, influencer and kid entrepreneur. She was four years old when her short video made rounds on the internet in 2021 and went viral. A woman complimented Cassidy's hair when she replied, "Thank you, it's an afro!" Her adorable video reminds us how girls and adults should take pride in our color and beauty and always wear their natural crowns with confidence daily!
Cassidy has sparked a movement across the world! Her mom, Gabrielle Whetstone Bridges, shares that they've been getting messages from every continent since then. "Viola Davis shared it, and then Tina Knowles, and it kept going and kept going. So I knew that we were given a platform to share the message; we definitely made sure that we encouraged people to love the skin that we're in, and it's important to me as a parent to make sure that I'm instilling that message into Cassidy."
They developed the campaign to let children see themselves in clothing, home items, and a book inspired by people who reached out and were inspired by Cassidy. "People send messages saying, I'm encouraged to wear my natural hair. I'm inspired to wear my afro and know that it's beautiful to know that as professionals, I can still feel powerful and gorgeous with my natural curls, kinks and all. I wish that those things were instilled in me when I was that age."
The mother and daughter wrote their book entitled Thank You, It's An Afro which absolutely became life-changing for many people.

But I was waiting for inspiration. And so last year, in July, I was tidying up my room, she just came to me, and I saw a vision of her. She had on the glasses. I just immediately had her executed and wrote the story. I wanted children to know that it was OK to shine regardless of being bullied, regardless of not being accepted. It's OK to keep shining and being who you are. So that was the inspiration for Scribby."

The author shares, "Children need to see that we have a closer connection to our planet than we realize. We wouldn't even exist without it. So I wrote this little rap, it says, 'Let's give credit where credit is due. Without the Sun, there wouldn't be me or you!' We have to plant the seed in children at an early age that we are stewards of the environment and must take care of our planet."
Mrs. Fisher adds that she wasn't planning to become an author but knew that pursuing her passion would benefit many. "Science is intimidating, so you have to make it fun and in rhymes to get a child's attention. Being an author wasn't on my bucket list, but God had other plans for me to continue to promote literacy. And this is a gift for me to continue my passion for science and my love for teaching."

Because I knew how it would be in my head, I did the illustrations and painted everything first. Then I went back and wrote the words to match pictures, which is the opposite of how most people get the manuscripts done first."
The Runaway is a precious book that gently addresses the sometimes-hopeless feeling of anxiety and was inspired by a child who experiences this. Marianne hopes her young readers will come away from her book, understanding that anxiety comes in all shapes and forms and can happen to people of all ages.
Marianne believes a good picture book is one that captures the reader's attention from the very beginning, and whose storytelling is visually supported by its illustrations. She wants to impart a lesson that, while running away from problems is never the answer, discussion and imagining them a different way can help. She hopes her words make a difference to children and that her illustrations bring them joy.
When she's not writing and illustrating thought-provoking picture books for children, Marianne enjoys reading, painting, and hanging out with her husband and four children. She lives with her family and two dogs, three cats, two guinea pigs and a handful of hermit crabs, in Virginia. The Runaway is her debut children's book.

Two of Gwen's books have been nominated for NAACP Image Awards: 101 Scholarship Applications: What It Takes to Obtain a Debt-Free College Education in 2015, and You Are Wonderfully Made: 12 Life-Changing Principles for Teen Girls to Embrace in 2016. The latter was a book she co-authored with her daughter, Sylvia, who is a graduate of North Carolina Central University, an HBCU.
As a publicist, Gwen provides a wide range of marketing services, primarily for clients within the book industry. She co-owns Cushcity.com with her husband, Willie. Cushcity.com provides retail and literary marketing services within the African-American market.
Gwen is co-founder and national coordinator of the National Black Book Festival. This annual event, held in Houston, Texas, attracts over 100 African-American authors from across the U.S. and celebrates its 13th anniversary in October 2020.

Christine earned her bachelor's degree from The Pennsylvania State University and a master's degree from the University at Albany. During her career in the NYPD, Christine was a policy analyst, instructor in the police academy, and a 9/11 rescue worker. She retired in the rank of Sergeant.
While assigned to New York City Emergency Management, Christine became the first female Director of Watch Command. Her team of 35 coordinated emergency incidents in New York City and issued emergency alerts to the public 24 hours 7 days a week.
Christine spent years believing a cleft lip and palate, being the shortest kid in class, and a learning disability were holding her back. But the opposite was true. They taught her that what makes us different is really the foundation for understanding our superpowers.

There are tons of books on dog training for adults but not one written for kids. Author Andrew Waner III saw this big need and inspired writing the series Hudi and Tux: Adventures in Pet Learning. "I want to help children understand the responsibility of caring for pets. This also teaches them how easy it is to make a mistake, learn from it, and fix it; they will build confidence and process learning. The second part of the book is to help dogs and animals in shelters. They need supplies, food and even peanut butter. (Dogs love peanut butter.) They need help with adoptions and things like that. My goal is to help with sales of the book to help be able to give supplies to shelters around Louisville, Kentucky, to give them anything that they may need in these hard times."

Shondra M. Quarles is an early childhood educator and children's book author who resides in Dallas. In 2014, Ms. Quarles' students inspired her to write and self-publish her first e-book titled Kindergartner Wisdom: The Best Advice I Ever Got Came From Kindergartners. Shondra later published her first paperback book titled The Teacher Who Didn't Want to go to School in 2016. This book earned her a prestigious award from the National Celebrity Educators for authoring a book about teachers. The Teacher Who Didn't Want to go to School was also a children's book finalist for the 2017 and 2018 Indie Author Legacy Awards.
In 2017, Shondra co-authored a book about diversity titled Trees. In 2018, she published Black Lives Matter: A Picture Book for Kids and My Black is Beautiful. Both books were written to promote self-love. Shondra went on to be a featured author at the 2018 NAACP Convention, and her books were featured at the 2018 Essence Music Festival.
Her book Curly Hair, Don't Care was written in 2019 to encourage children to be proud of their natural hair. Other 2019 publications include Young King and Fati's Garden. Young King is a book of affirmations for young boys, and Fati's Garden follows a young girl who discovers the power of planting seeds.
In 2020, Shondra published The Three Bears go to School and The Teacher Who Was Quarantined and Couldn't Go to School. Her most recent publications are Jamal's Nursery Rhyme Remix, featuring diverse characters and No Calvin, a book about a boy learning safe choices as he goes back to school during the COVID-19 pandemic.

TuTu Goes Green is a book that teaches children how to live green through the wide eyes of an adorable little girl named TuTu. TuTu explores the world of green living from a child's perspective, learning the meaning and importance of traditional "green" concepts like reduce, reuse, and recycle while spreading the message that children can contribute to saving the environment.
In this fun and engaging book, children will learn that small changes to their daily routines, such as recycling old notebooks, turning out the lights, and using reusable shopping bags, can play a huge role in helping the environment.
✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Tulani Thomas was inspired to write children's books ten years ago while starting her family and practising corporate law.
"I knew that I wanted to raise my children with that green ethos. As I was able to stay home after my first child and look to populate his library with diverse characters and messages that complement what I was teaching him at home, I was hitting a wall, and I said, why don't I go and write a book? I know other mothers trying to raise environmentally friendly children are also looking for a tool like this."
She decided the best route forward would be to form her own publishing company and establish a green lifestyle brand to fill the void. TuTu's Green World, LLC was born.

In 2015, Evona suffered severe medical complications after a procedure in which her vocal cords were paralyzed, resulting in difficulty speaking, breathing, and swallowing. As a result, her life drastically changed, and she was left devastated while looking to God for direction. However, her tragedy led her to focus on her love for writing and began creating books that assist children and adults in coping with challenging circumstances.
These events led Evona to develop Strength Builders Publishing LLC that encourages individuals to press through their pain and conquer.

✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:Navjit Sandhu, known as Navi, is a licensed early childhood educator with fifteen years of professional experience. The idea for her book came when as a preschool teacher, she was planning a curriculum around multiculturalism and themes. "I found it so difficult to find books that were diverse and represented different cultures, and so at that time, I had a thought in my head that it would be so nice if there were more diverse books since Dora the Explorer was the only thing that there was at that time. I thought it would be so lovely to have something in my language. Fast-Forward 20 years, I just kept writing down ideas, and when I was pregnant with my son, I wrote the book, and it took me a couple of years to get it out after that."

In this episode, we are going to read “Amy's Travels” By Kathryn Starke.
✅ ABOUT THE STORY:
“Amy's Travels” tells the story of a globe-trotting girl who visits all seven continents on earth. The book’s main character was born in Peru and traveled to Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America and introduces Antarctica and Australia as well.
First published in 2006, writer Kathryn Starke shares that the character is based on her real life college roommate who had a very exciting story to tell. “Her father worked for the government and she traveled clearly all around the world. So this is Amy's true story that she gave me to write. And the reason I decided to write it is I am a former elementary school teacher and I taught first and second and third grade. And the seven continents are part of our curriculum in second grade. I could not find one story, a fictional story that took us to all of the continents. I found a nonfiction story for everyone, but that stubborn factual book I had to bring home from the library. And I found that we learn best through story. So I told the story of Amy to my students just using the map and using her journey. And when I realized that it not only made the children connect to other locations, but understood we have greater landmasses than just our community and our country. Then I turned it into a book with Amy's permission.”

My younger daughter has blond hair, blue eyes, fair skin and has my shorter stature. And my older daughter is very tall. She has an olive complexion like me, brown hair, brown eyes. And one of my daughters wears glasses and has a little bit of a speech thing, which I find very cute, but they were starting to get a little bit insecure about their differences in each other.
And then they started asking why certain friends had different skin colors and why certain friends might be missing a limb, and we have a lot of different types of friends and a diverse group and community. And so they're asking a lot of why. And so I couldn't find a book that was allowing them to have conversations with me. I didn't want an author to tell my kids what to think. And so I wanted them to be able to ask questions. So I decided to write the book that I couldn't find."

"Not So Different" is a powerful illustration of how important it is for children to understand other cultures and embrace diversity at a young age.

In this episode, we will feature our first children's financial literacy book, The Me That Needs to Be, by Ken Harvey.
✅ ABOUT THE STORY:
"The Me That Needs to Be" tells the story of Ken, an all-star pro football player who travels back in time to teach his younger self how to be more intelligent in managing money.
Ken would take himself through spending habits and knowing how to decide what to buy: NEEDS that are essential to survive versus what you WANT as an optional desire. A new pair of shoes and the latest video game would be nice to have, but one can live without them.
Budgeting comes in and divides into each of these buckets -- saving some money, spending some money, and giving some money away.
Fundamental but most often unpracticed truth for kids and older kids -- the title is a pledge and commitment that you will become "the man that needs to be" by making smart money choices.
✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Ken Harvey was drafted into the National Football League in 1988. He played outside linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals (formerly Phoenix Cardinals) and the Washington Redskins.
From playing professional football, Ken was inspired to write his first children's book when his two boys talked about a show on TV that he found out had no black characters that they can relate with.
Ken says despite having a successful career, he's made terrible financial decisions. "I was depressed. I had a lot of money, and I, unfortunately, lost a lot of money. That could be a cycle of going downhill. But I stopped looking at it as a mistake but as a teaching lesson to grow and learn from. What do I need to do so I don't repeat the same mistake?
As told in The Me That Needs to Be, my story is a gift for someone to hopefully learn from my mistakes and make wise choices. They can walk into any situation with confidence saying, you know what, I know I'm going to make money, I'm going to save money, I'm going to spend money, and I'm going to have fun."

Growing up in Poland, the Stefan Jaracz Theatre was Natalia's playground, a place where she eagerly watched her Mom on stage from behind the scenes. It was her mother's passion for the Arts that ignited Natalia's love of storytelling, acting, and photography at a young age. After immigrating to Canada in 1990, Natalia's artwork made several appearances in Toronto's Nuit Blanche. She was presented with the Young Talent Award from the Turzański Foundation for writing and reciting poetry.

In this episode, we're going to read Bitsy Bob Wants to Hippity Hop by Takisha Payne. This is a book about a small child understanding and using her God-given talents. Although her mother is skeptical, she never loses focus, and, along with encouraging words from her father, she excels with her hip hop dancing skills.
Takisha Payne was born in Warrenton, Virginia. Her love for writing began at an early age. In 5th grade, she received an award for an outstanding paper on "Saying No to Drugs." This started her love for writing. Specializing in poetry, her love to write increased. She began to write short poems with rhyming patterns.
In 2008 Takisha began to focus her rhyming ability on stories, which became her children's books. The first children's book, "Bitsy Bop Wants to Hippity Hop," was published in January 2013 and is available now on Amazon.

We All Honk The Same by Rachell Booker

In this episode, we're going to read The Not-So-Perfect Princess and the Not-So-Dreadful Dragon by Jayneen Sanders. Princess Petal is NOT what you would expect the ‘perfect’ princess to be. In fact, she is quite the opposite. Her princess dresses are torn and scruffy, she wears an old woolly hat instead of a golden crown, and she is very (very) loud. So, when Princess Petal meets a fire-breathing dragon while out hiking in the forest, both are in for a bit of a shock! An enchanting tale about friendship, diversity, acceptance, and being exactly who we are meant to be. The moral behind this story is imperative yet simple: we are all different and that’s okay, making judgments, and assumptions about people are not okay, all genders should be treated equally. Also included are Discussion Questions for parents, caregivers, and educators.
Jayneen (aka Jay Dale) is an experienced primary school teacher, editor, author, and publisher. She started her teaching career in the 1980s as an elementary school teacher in rural Queensland, Australia. She then moved to Victoria and taught at a number of inner-city schools. She is currently working with an educational publisher as the lead author of a new literacy series. Jay has written over 100 titles in that series.

On a humid hot day, Joshua and Pip are geared up and ready for a great day of fishing. On the way to Ogeechee Lake, they see a sign that challenges them to catch Calvin the Catfish. Pip is ready and willing to accept the challenge. However, Pip and Joshua soon find out that catching any fish, let alone the great CALVIN THE CATFISH, takes lots of patience and a little luck.
Mister John, or John Light, Jr., is a Librarian and Storyteller. You can often find him, at the library, leading Storytime and Music and Motion programs. Mister John has twin boys, Joshua and Jeremiah, whom he has told countless stories since their birth. Mister John is from Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from George Wythe High School, Old Dominion University, and Syracuse University. He is married to Deidre, the love of his life.

Children will LAUGH all the way through this silly AWARD-WINNING story about a young boy who stays home with a COLD and tries to rest and feel better when he suddenly gets sucked into a strange world where he is coached by a “freshly picked” trainer named Boogie, who then teaches him, how to fight a tough COLD. Will Boogie’s training be enough for our hero to defeat the big and mighty COLD? With determination, good instruction and a spoonful of luck, our hero may just have a chance.
Adam T. Newman is an award-winning children's book author whose childhood consisted of sports, reading comic books, and playing with action figures. His love for film, writing and cartoons led him to cross country to Los Angeles, where he landed a job working for a children's animation company.
Adam has worked for numerous film studios as an art director and graphic designer. He is also the recipient of the prestigious “World’s Greatest Dad” award, which his two wonderful kids presented in the form of a t-shirt.

At the pet store, Jamie discovers all types of pets available. Jamie has to make a tough decision about which pet to get until he finds his perfect pet, his perfect friend.
In 1999, Ramona moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she currently flies to work in Gillam, Manitoba, as a security guard. Starting in the late nineties, Ramona had her poetry published in ten different poetry book publications, which led Ramona to start writing children's books beginning with this one, Jamie's Pet.

Melissa-Sue John is a mom, wife, blogger, author, self-publisher, social psychologist, and psychology professor. She has several scholarly publications and awards, including a collaborative grant from the Institution of Educational Sciences entitled, "Seeds of STEM: The Development of an innovative early childhood stem curriculum," which focuses on designing an engineering curriculum for pre-K classrooms. In addition to research, she finds fulfillment in writing books with her daughters, Alyssa Simone and Olivia Lauren, as they attempt to increase literacy and appreciation for STEAM, and encourage youth to illustrate their art in her books.

Sophia is excited for her first day at her new school. She has a new dress, new shoes, and a new hairdo. Her mom has combed Sophia’s hair into cornrows with blue and white beads to match her dress. She loves hearing the beads in her hair hit together, like tiny wind chimes.
When she arrives at school, Sophia discovers her hair is different from the other girls’ hair. The children are curious about Sophia’s cornrows, and one even seems to tease her. Sophia is sad; she begs her mom to style her just like her friends.
