This is the PAINE Podcast. A podcast for physician assistants to prepare for passing the PANCE/PANRE, as well as staying up to date on clinical literature. Every month I breakdown a topic on the NCCPA blueprint and tell you what you need to know when studying for your boards. I also tackle the current literature that may be practice changing, as well as other emerging medical practice topics.

I apologize for the time between clinical episodes but March/April has been a doozy in the Maday house. Between finishing up gymnastics season, planning my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah for June, and ramping up my training for a Scottish games competition in May, I haven’t had a lot of free time to get a episode out. But fret not my friends……I got one for you to close out April. Today we will be reviewing the newborn exam and all the things you need to know on your peds rotation to examine a brand new tiny human fresh off the lot!

Hopefully your 2021 has started off on the right foot and you have put 2020 in the rearview. For the cardiovascular topic of 2021, I wanted to cover something that really gave me fits while I was in school and even in clinical practice……bundle branch blocks. We will review the electrical conduction system of the heart, the EKG criteria for diagnosing, and common conditions and pitfalls that are associated with these special types of dysrhythmias.

Nosebleeds. Seem pretty straight forward, and for the most part, they are. Buuuuuut, there are some nuances and special considerations you need to think of before you throw that pack in there and send to ENT. So for this episode, we will cover the anatomy, leading causes, signs and symptoms, and management of a common complaint to the ED and primary care.

It has been a hot minute since I did a psychiatry podcast from the blueprint. Full disclosure….it is not my strong suit. On top of that, the double topic months are hard to crank out two quality podcasts and, unfortunately, psychiatry has suffered. So for the 2nd podcast of May, I am going to cover the screening tools for some of the more common psychiatry conditions we encounter in clinical practice.

Since the blueprint for neuro is not very extensive and the pathophysiology can get pretty complicated, I figured I would do a quick and dirty review of headaches. Hit the blueprint specific topics, review red flag findings, who to scan, and how to treat.
So, back in 2016 on episode #11, I reviewed the cyanotic congenital heart diseases and said I would (at some point) cover the acyanotic lesions. Well, my friends, the time has come. For the pediatrics topic of 2020, I will review the big four acyanotic CHD (VSD, ASD, PDA, CoA) on the pediatric EOR and PANCE blueprint to wrap this topic up.
