In 2023 Mustangs Mariana Alvarez-Cortez and Ava Collins, having just completed their freshman years, recorded a "Mustangs Ahead" podcast offering advice to incoming LRHS ninth-graders. It was one of the most popular podcasts in the school's history. This year, as graduating seniors, Alvarez-Cortez and Collins look back at their LRHS experiences, and once again offer advice, this time from their newer, more mature perspective. They hope new, and current, Mustangs find their thoughts valuable.
The Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) class of 2026 graduated May 18. Around 600 Mustangs walked across the infield at Bradenton’s LECOM Park into their futures. This edition of the “Mustangs Ahead” podcast captures some senior memories, thoughts and – maybe most important – advice for future classes. New podcast editors Katelyn Bagshaw and Cassidy Barnhart caught up with graduating seniors and gave them one last chance to sound off…as Mustangs.
America recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 - Oct. 15 every year. According to the Library of Congress the observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. The period histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Lakewood Ranch High School recognizes the Hispanic heritage of students and teachers during this period, and this edition of the "Mustang Ahead" podcast shares some of their thoughts and ideas.
Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) seniors have many ways to remember their final years of high school. Traditions such as prom and homecoming are familiar across the nation, but some Mustangs have more individual ways to enjoy the year. Creating unique memory boxes, parking sports and backpacks can help students celebrate their individuality as well as their academic accomplishments. This episode of the "Mustangs Ahead" podcast highlights several LRHS seniors who share different ways to commemorate their participation in the class of 2026.
The LRHS Class of 2024 graduated May 16. Nearly 600 Mustangs stepped into their futures at Bradenton's LECOM Park. A class this size has a variety of memories, some shared, some single, but all special. That means the school has a very different feel as classrooms, the cafeteria, the gymnasium and the parking lot have a lot more empty spaces. LRHS offers students a variety of college and career preparation opportunities. Classes, clubs and extra-curricular activities introduce Mustangs to the demands of the workplace. Students must also consider, however, such often-overlooked skills such as attendance, commitment and attitude to succeed. In this episode of the "Mustangs Ahead" podcast, LRHS teachers and students discuss their appreciation for these "soft" skills and the opportunities they'll present in the lives of today's students.
Spring break is March 25-29 for all Manatee County schools, including Lakewood Ranch. Mustangs are looking forward to a break before returning to the challenges of wrapping up the school year. Both students and teachers have travel and relaxation plans, or intend to enjoy relaxing around the house. Whether they're called "trinkets," "knich-nacks," or "decorations," items in a classroom can reflect a teacher's personality and interests. They can also help students by creating a more welcoming and comfortable environment. Mustangs will soon register for the 2024-25 school year. LRHS offers a wide variety of academic and elective classes. Students can sign up for college level, honors and standard academic courses. They can also investigate a variety of electives...everything from agriculture to early childhood education to TV production. Additionally, students can take online courses or dual enroll with local colleges. There are many options and this episode of the "Mustangs Ahead" podcast offers words of advice when it comes to making important decisions that can affect a student's future.
The Super Bowl is perhaps America's most popular single sporting event. Tens of millions of people, many not even football fans, will tune in to see the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers. Lakewood Ranch students and teachers will watch the broadcast...some to see the game and some hoping to catch a glimpse of music superstar Taylor Swift, girlfriend of Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce. In this episode of the "Mustangs Ahead" podcast Mustangs share their big game thoughts and traditions.
LRHS opened in August 1998. There have been many changes to the school and the community over the last 25 years. Mustangs are spending 2023-24 celebrating the school's successes, memories and legacy. Mustangs are transitioning from the first to the second quarter of the school year. The new grading period means new challenges, especially after the disruptions caused by Hurricane Ian. Both teacher and students however, appear ready to meet these demands and continue a strong school year.
