In this week's episode of the EdTech Speaks podcast, Dr. Sher Downing interviews one of our own team members, Jeremy Hopper, Senior Director of Learning Solutions at Downing EdTech.

Throughout the conversation, Jeremy shares about his journey in the field of instructional design and its evolution over the years, as the challenges arose from moving to virtual content and the importance of the user experience in online courses.

Jeremy shares his experience working in both higher education and the private sector, highlighting the different roles and responsibilities of instructional designers in different contexts. Discussions lead to the transition and impact of the pandemic on the shift to hybrid learning and the use of technology in instructional design. They conclude with a discussion on the future of learning experience and the importance of continuous learning and intentional design.

Takeaways:

  • Instructional design has evolved over the years and now encompasses various roles and responsibilities, including instructional development, training, writing, and technology integration.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift to online and hybrid learning, highlighting the value and benefits of online education.
  • Instructional designers need to stay updated with emerging trends and technologies, such as AI, AR/VR, adaptive learning, and media development, to create engaging and effective learning experiences.
  • The future of learning experience lies in personalization, cultural relevance, and catering to different learner preferences and needs.
  • Visual design, interactive content, and microlearning are key elements in creating engaging and consumable learning experiences.
  • Curiosity, continuous learning, and intentional design are essential for instructional designers to stay innovative and deliver high-quality educational content.

On the topic of Instructional Design evolution, Jeremy says, "A lot of businesses can just take what they have now and put it up online and sell it, but that doesn't mean people are going to engage with it or resonate with it. Instructional designers are having to transition to learning experience designers. So in the past, it was very much instructional design. It's just taking the instructions, designing them, putting them up. You're just designing the educational process. Now we're designing the educational experience where we want students to really engage with the material. We want the material to resonate with them. We want to shape how they're experiencing everything." Learn more and connect with Jeremy here:

When is the last time you heard about data fraud? Living in 2023, it probably wasn't long ago that you read an article or heard a news piece on the topic.

We welcome you to listen in to this week's EdTech Speaks episode as we interview Nick Lambert. Nick has been working with technology companies his entire career. Starting out with IBM and Sanmina-SCI, Nick moved into the decentralized space in 2011 with Scottish start-up MaidSafe and was their Chief Operating Officer for seven years. Nick is now the CEO of Dock Labs AG, the company behind the Dock network who has created Dock Certs, a platform that enables organizations to create and manage decentralized identities and verifiable credentials.

We live in a world where anything can be faked. In a digital world, it's harder and harder to know what information is true and what isn't. Our most important data is now digital, and it's increasingly easier for people to manipulate and fake it to their advantage. This has led to widespread mistrust between people and puts companies at risk of serious liabilities.

Nick says, "To make it worse, traditional verification processes are broken. Verifying the authenticity of data is costly, time-consuming and inefficient. It's a huge burden to put on companies that need to consume data. Manual data verification is not suited for today's fast-moving world."

Enter...DOCK. When using Dock, organizations can end data fraud and reduce verification costs. Dock's Verifiable Credentials Platform makes data fraud-proof and allows stakeholders to verify its authenticity in seconds – making expensive, time-consuming, and manual verification processes disappear. Specifically, organizations in the education sector can now prevent diploma and certificate fraud, and reduce the time and cost of verifying these documents. Diplomas can now be fraud-proof and instantly verifiable.

In this episode of the EdTech Speaks podcast, Sher has the privilege of interviewing Tucker Graves, CEO and Co-Founder of the Pineapple Academy, a company with a mission of advancing the world's deskless workforce through training and skills development. The Pineapple Academy was founded by two friends who refused to accept the levels of turnover in the food service industry (about 30% higher than the average of all other industries).

Tucker grew up in the food service industry, first working at his family’s food distribution business serving 4 states in the Midwest. From there he started several restaurants and cafes in Kansas City where he learned food service operations. Always the entrepreneur, he later went on to create a company to help serve the independent Senior Living Communities with a new model of a Group Purchasing Organization (GPO).

Tucker found his passion in helping caregivers manage their communities through cost management services and providing food service operations with the tools to improve patient and resident satisfaction. He understood that Hospitality and Culinary Arts are the cornerstones of a thriving culture in healthcare communities. Today, Tucker enjoys being personally involved with clients in coaching them in their overall Business Strategy, Staff Learning and Development Strategies, and Marketing Strategies.

As a legal scholar and author, Steven has been a prominent figure in the field of legal education for over 48 years. Steven's journey began in 1974, when he started writing and publishing books for law students, focusing on simplifying and enhancing the learning process.

Today, as the principal author of the acclaimed Emanuel Law Outlines series, he's dedicated to helping law students effectively master complex subjects. He has challenged traditional "Socratic method" and case-oriented approaches, developing more efficient ways for students to grasp the substance of law-school subjects. EmanuelAYCE.com provides law students access to a vast library of study aids through a subscription model, fostering a more personalized and effective learning process.

Steven says, "Education is about to be transformed by the use of AI/Machine Learning methods (like Chat-GPT), which will give each student a truly customized learning experience. Anyone who wants to "teach" others should be actively exploring how these ML-based methods can create an entirely new way of delivering educational content, because these will (I predict) largely supplant traditional methods of instruction."

Welcome back for another brilliant interview on the EdTech Speaks podcast where we interview Ryan Gialames, an experienced edtech product and design leader as Head of Product for Robot & Pencils’s education technology. He is responsible for launching edtech products, such as Student Apps, and bringing them to market while also driving the future innovation of these products. Although Ryan’s background started in theatre and filmmaking, he now uses those skills to engage with educators, designers, and technologists to create innovative learning experiences.

Today, Ryan shares how Robots & Pencils provides students with a seamless, customized experience that supports each learner’s unique needs. Powered by Salesforce, their Student Apps integrates backend systems, including CRM, SIS, and LMS platforms, under a user-centered frontend. This technology is a breakthrough in the educational technology field as its unique method of consolidating all student data eliminates the data silos that normally impede the ability of staff to support students.

Ryan says, "A one size fits all approach no longer works for today’s learners pursuing higher education. They’re juggling demands involving finances, jobs, family members, and other personal issues. Each person has different needs, goals, and prior knowledge to be accounted for. Often, these individuals care less about degree titles and more about learning specific, in-demand skills that will get them where they want to go."

To answer those varying needs, Robots & Pencils has helped to design and build a variety of accessible, inclusive, and customizable learning experiences that support learners of all types. As a whole, they provide solutions and...

  • Build platforms that offer flexibility in how and where students learn
  • Create pathways that accommodate unique and evolving needs
  • Focus on Outcomes and key skills learned
  • Show how education outcomes align to industry needs
  • Ensure learners own their learning progress and skills data

What an intriguing guest on the EdTech Speaks podcast! Tune in as I interview a thought leader and expert in the field of air quality and purification, Frederik Hendriksen. Before COVID you may not have given much thought to the topic, but since 2020 when the entire world was restricted to 6 feet separations and mandatory masks, air purification has become a need versus a want.

Frederik joins us today to share how his company, Rensair, provides an air purification solution through technology, protecting and enhancing lives through clean air.

Rensair’s portable, hospital-grade air purifier is helping businesses and communities get back on their feet. Our patented technology, which combines H13 HEPA filtration with germicidal UVC light, was initially developed to meet the strict standards of Scandinavian hospitals. It traps and destroys more than 99.97% of airborne bacteria and viruses, including the Coronavirus family, helping to protect lives through clean air.

Rensair's Company History:

The core technology behind the Rensair air purifier was developed twenty years ago by Henrik Hendriksen, a Danish ventilation engineer, and Fredrick's father.

When one of his sons developed severe allergies as a child, Henrik couldn’t find a remedy. So he invented one. Leveraging his deep knowledge, he combined the most advanced hospital-grade air cleaning technologies in a compact, portable design.

Subsequently, his innovative design was sought after by hospitals, institutions and care homes across Scandinavia.

Henrik’s legacy endures today. In 2020, his twin sons Christian and Frederik Hendriksen set up Rensair to evolve the original product design, continue its manufacture and distribute it worldwide. Watch the story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZe21Nfdy\_4&feature=youtu.be

Frederik says, "Air purification is key to mitigating the risk of Covid infection. If companies are to encourage employees and customers to return to their premises, practical steps must be taken to prioritize health & safety. Just as people expect pure water from the tap or hygienic food from the supermarket, so too they expect clean air in buildings and shared spaces. It’s not just an expectation, it’s a human right."

Have you heard of Wyebot?

If not, then be sure to tune in to today's episode of the EdTech Speaks podcast where I welcome back Roger Sands, co-Founder and CEO of Wyebot, Inc.

We unpack the ideas behind Wyebot, a WiFi automation platform used in education facilities, as well as enterprise and healthcare facilities. During our conversation, we discuss how Wyebot makes sure WiFi networks are optimized and working to their fullest potential, which is especially important considering the amount of technology we use on a daily basis.

What's the differentiator? Wyebot’s AI-backed technology automates and solves WiFi issues that would normally be ticketed to engineers. This process, according to the company, results in a 70 percent reduction in WiFi problem tickets and a decrease in onsite problem-solving visits by up to 80 percent.

When asked about his prediction on tech and education trends for the future, Roger says, "Technology will become more and more important and hybrid schedules will still be popular. This hybrid work environment is with us, the industry has mastered it, and we need ways to support this new ecosystem."

Roger has 17 years of executive management positions in successful networking startups and Fortune 500 companies. Prior to Wyebot, Roger was the Business Line Manager for Hewlett-Packard’s WW WLAN business growing it from #6 to #2 market share. Roger joined HP via the acquisition of Colubris Networks a wireless startup where he held a number of executive positions including co-CEO and was instrumental in the HP acquisition. Prior to Colubris, he was a GM at Accton Technology founding the enterprise wireless business and building it to #3 market share via 6 strategic partnerships. Roger also held senior management positions at 3com, USRobotics and Bytex Corporation, and he holds a Masters and Bachelors in Electrical Engineering at Northeastern University.

Thanks for tuning into another great episode of the EdTech Speaks podcast where we are joined by Ross Young, EVP of Linewize, a rising classroom management and technology company.

He helps K-12 school districts meet the challenges of today’s connected learning environment by leading product strategy, sales and customer experience. Ross has deep expertise in the EdTech and cybersecurity industries, a passion for technology and its ability to drive social impact, and a strong understanding of how to effectively integrate classroom management tools into school districts while complying with security, safety, 1:1 scale and procurement.

Ross is incredibly passionate about protecting kids and teens in their digital journey, especially because he once intercepted his daughter interacting with a predator online before it was able to escalate. When he’s not busy supporting and protecting every child’s digital journey, Ross can be found chasing his kids on bikes, skis, scooters or across the football field at his home in San Diego, California.

Listen in as we discuss surveillance vs. security when it comes to digital monitoring tools and EdTech tools and how they can protect students from harmful online behavior and help find early indicators of violence, self-harm and bullying.

Ross mentions that he has a variety of technical tools in his classroom management and digital monitoring software. Linewize can help school districts protect their students and avoid violent incidents. It can also help parents ensure their kids are navigating the digital world a little more safely.

He says, "Moving forward, I expect to see an emphasis on mental health awareness in EdTech monitoring tools. I also expect to see more tools emerge that will help to measure the effectiveness of the EdTech systems being utilized."

Today, the EdTech Speaks podcast interviews Ahsan Rizvi, CEO and Founder, Kiddom. Ahsan's story starts out when he was a young boy, going to school in Pakistan. When he was in 7th grade, he wanted to switch school systems, because that was the best way for him to get into colleges in the US. In order to attend the new school he had to pass an entrance exam, and based on the results, the school picked one, single candidate out of 1,100+ each year. He managed to pass by studying through the summer while all his friends were outside playing soccer (which he really envied!). This set the framework (at such a young age) for understanding the power of education.

This background led Ahsan to create Kiddom, the first all-in-one education platform for high-quality digital curricula. It integrates curriculum management, instruction, assessment, and communication tools into one solution, saving schools valuable time, resources and money. With the flexibility to access and edit curriculum from any location, Kiddom is the only education platform that can effectively support teachers and learners engaging in in-class, blended, hybrid or distance learning scenarios, as well as in the quick pivots between them. Headquartered in San Francisco with an office in New York City, Kiddom is a team of passionate educators, designers, and developers building technology to enable all teachers and learners to unlock their full potential.

When asked about his hardships, Ahsan said, "It took 7 months to get the first investor meeting for Kiddom’s first round of financing, since I had no connections in the community. Going through the constant rejections from investors was hard without a paycheck. Getting that first “yes” was a huge step towards making Kiddom a reality and that lesson of tenacity has helped shape that same tenacity within Kiddom."

Listen in as Ahsan shares how the Kiddom platform can be the key to great education of the future, built for all students of all abilities.

HOT TOPIC: Evolution of Learning

This week's episode of the EdTech Speaks podcast welcomes Rebecca Eller-Molitas, Adult Education Consultant, speaker, trainer, and writer.

Rebecca began her adult education career overseas as an ESL teacher in Japan. Since returning to the US, she has been fortunate to teach and lead in the nonprofit and educational community with roles in all areas of adult learning including ABE/ASE, GED, ESL, Digital Literacy, teacher training, and Transitions. Approaching adult basic education with an intention to understand its various parts has given her deep insight into how silos within the system can come together - from programs, to workforce, to funding.

During the interview, Rebecca leaves us a thought-provoking reminder when she says, "Adult Education is a bigger need in the US than most people realize. Many adults still lack basic literacy and numeracy skills, and this impacts all areas of society from health to employment to a child's success in school."

Phil is the Founder of the Master of Business Leadership (MBL) executive coaching program. For the past 21 years, he has been helping executives and their organizations achieve remarkable results through Emotional Intelligence. There are MBL alumni in the US, Canada, UK, Europe, Japan, Africa, Australia, the Middle East and Saudi Arabia.

He leaves us with a solid piece of advice when he says, "Invest In Yourself. The best advice I can give you and your organization is to take the leap of faith of investing in yourself. The development of your emotional intelligence will ensure your personal, business, and career success. An organization’s profitability and success are a reflection of its level of emotional intelligence. Without an ongoing investment in the development of its emotional intelligence, it will eventually collapse. The biggest challenge organizations face is in changing their people, not technology. Advancing the habits, mindset, and behavior in order to embrace change and technology can take years."

Hot Topic: Digital DisruptionsCrystal Kadakia is a 2-time TEDx speaker, OD consultant, best-selling author of The Millennial Myth and Designing for Modern Learning. She is the co-creator of the Learning Cluster Design Model. Crystal is an organizational change expert taking on challenges in topics like ways of working, inclusion, community building, learning, and productivity for the Digital Age. She uses her strengths in systems thinking, dialogic change, sensemaking, and team process design to help clients like General Mills, Sierra Club, Atlassian, Genentech, and the World Bank to develop their organizations. Crystal has a bachelor's in Chemical Engineering and a master's in Organizational Development.

Join me as Crystal shares her viewpoints on how technology alone isn’t enough to evolve modern learning. She emphasized the need for professionals to evolve our mindsets, approaches, and methods so we can make the most of the technology we invest in. Technology today is ready to move learning out of the classroom, but learning design capabilities limit many organizations. As a designer, Crystal explained that once you have the know-how to design out of the classroom, you can finally take advantage of today's technology and make assets accessible, searchable, social, and engaging. Cue Learning Cluster Design!

She says, "Don’t be afraid to question the status quo - whether that is in your own field, your leadership, your organizational culture. Questions that aren’t asked, aren’t answered. Persevere - as a friend once told me, we are building sandcastles of transformative change at the edge of the ocean. It’s okay if change doesn’t happen with the first sandcastle. There are many of us working on moving this big ship."

EdTech Speaks interviews another intriguing guest by the name of R. David Lankes. David is the incoming Virginia & Charles Bowden Professor in Librarianship at the University of Texas at Austin. His latest book Forged in War explores how today’s technology and media world is a result of over a century of war and conflict.

He teaches online, researches online and presents online. Noticing a pattern here? Every part of his job is enabled and transformed with technology.

Much of his focus on this episode is on librarians. These are community-based agencies of change linked across all parts of a community (schools to public to medical, to law, to academic). David encourages others to see librarians as partners instead of simply service providers. Libraries today are more than simply book services, which seems like an archaic concept, knowing what we know today.

He believes that mass social networks for professionals will evolve to peer-based learning networks, accelerated by advances in machine and deep learning. The future of education is better by combining experience with publicly available professional development with formal education. If this doesn't come to fruition, he thinks that higher education as we know it may implode from becoming over commoditized credential engines of job training.

Recapping the interview, David says, "Academia can be an entrepreneurial place if we think differently. Libraries and Librarians are agents of disruption and reconnection."

Welcome to a very unique episode of the EdTech Speaks podcast where we are joined by Seth Raphael, who is officially the youngest guest we've had the pleasure of interviewing.

Seth Raphael is the founder of LinkJoin, a website that organizes and automatically opens virtual classes. He is a student at Las Lomas High School, but also an entrepreneur and programmer. During his virtual 2020 school year, he noticed that he was struggling to remember to join his classes. So he created LinkJoin to help himself and others never be late again. His programming journey started small, with occasional summer camps where he learned the basics of coding and its concepts, but Seth's interest and knowledge spiked during the summer of 2020, when the world was in lockdown and he was stuck inside. After taking a full-fledged online course on Python, he became interested in making websites and quickly picked up the rest of the technologies needed. And when the need arose for one to automatically open his meetings, he knew how to make it. Seth enjoys playing piano, tennis, and ice hockey in his free time, and derives joy from beating his parents at backyard ping-pong.

Seth has proven that you don't have to be an adult with multiple degrees to succeed in making a product to help people, you can just work towards a goal of solving a problem, learning as you go.

Seth says, "Just getting started is the hardest step - if you have an idea and you think you can get it out there to help people, then just get started and see where it goes."

David Wells is the founder and president of Wells Consulting. After finishing his MBA at the University of Chicago in 1989 he began more than three decades of work in custom database system design and development. Many systems placed in production are still in daily use more than a decade after original deployment and continue to expand in scope and functionality.

When asked about his career journey as an "accidental entrepreneur" and David says, "I didn't really plan it, but it's worked out fabulously and I love the flexibility, and I've always worked anywhere I wanted to. Now, all of my focus is primarily on helping businesses to become more sustainable, to have that triple bottom line approach of not only focusing on the financial element but also what they can do in order to have a positive impact on the social and environmental aspects of running a business...we integrate a lot of that into the coursework."

Join us for the newest episode of EdTech Speaks, hosted by Sher Downing, Ph.D. as she reviews guests from our podcast launch through today. Tune in for five guests speaking on a wide variety of topics, sharing their expertise and knowledge.

There are 5 lessons we've learned during the pandemic:

  1. We’ve learned that you can earn an education online.

  2. We can be productive both with virtual meetings and remote working.

  3. We have learned to shop without being in stores; the ability to select items based on pictures, descriptions and recommendations has become pivotal in how we have changed our shopping experience. This is not only for food and necessities, it will change how retail is perceived for the future.

  4. We need a community. Never before have we needed others for assistance, help to move forward, or even just to hear our thoughts and concerns. The personal experience has become necessary even online.

  5. Medical treatments such as online nurses and dialing a physician have become useful for many situations.
