Réveil – May 2. 2026 – at civil twilight 04:55 till sunrise 05:30 and more…

Like every year after čarodějnice/walpurgisnight/witchburning and anti-autoritarian solidarity day, we participate in the magic worldwide Réveil broadcast with an early morning open mike in a distributed connected live context; this year by Rural Development with Akihiro Kubota [Kawazu] Gívan Belá [Hranice] Geza Roman Bobb & Kirsten Reese [Berlin] Joanna Wyrwa [Długie] Dom Leroy & Jef Rollez [Kerminy] also again straight from the KRA garden and for sure everywhere else like mentioned! Full spring is here while full moon is all around (don’t kill the reflections and colours by turning on your smart artificial bulbs please), open the windows, breath, smell the blossoms and fresh flowers, listen to the birds, … Enjoy the weekend!

The Full Réveil Program 2-3 May 2026
The Hranice Into Light Local Stream on Sunday morning…

impressionsduréveildojmyzprobuzení2026orreversedintimeduring the réveil 2026 initiative there was a lot to set up and change
so once in a while small pieces of sound were recorded for testing
let’s say over 24 hours or maybe longer don’t know it was not intensional

when looking for the recordings the snippets were there as left overs ready
to delete useless almost but then it is striking that we all make some noise
the insects the birds the frogs the people the trees the air and much more

like a memory of the weekend hearing the surroundings a single room coming
back alive when chaining it all up in reverse sequence they become a kind of
twisted memory of these days and night and then you hear someone sleep walking

Some excerpts were included by Cense on https://censeearth.bandcamp.com/album/dawn-chorus-2026 Reveil 24+1hr broadcast started SAT 2 MAY 2026 at 06:00h (UTC+2) and looped the earth at daybreak: https://soundtent.org/reveil.html

that is how a year starts of course!

Thanks to creativity Art became 1.000.063 years old (according to…). Like every year we want to bring a present to the eternal global birthday party! Like the 3 kings we wanted to travel together there, but then we had to come each from another side and meet in the middle. We decided to send our preparations and ideas already ahead as a present. Soon these will come together, somehow while moving on….

Gívan Belá just remembered Hromlegn Kainn, an old friend and philosopher who only made funny remarks and bad jokes, and how long ago they were both working on the idea of trivialities and accidental events which affect and shape some of us more than hard learning and serious working; here is a set of unusual sounds recorded while travelling 1000 kms away and back just to be in time at home to be sick in bed (every party needs a party pooper!)

letthebellsringforartsbirthday2026Electronic greets come from Geza Bobb, using charged belly chimes, mogrified shamanic drum sublimes and fake wind. A not so smart machine calculated that for this music individual electrons had to travel an accumulated 4.258.056.060 kms inside the involved electronic circuits in the process of its musicking. In the employed human’s brain making the music required a multiple amount of electron trafficking compared to his electronic brother, while no exact measurement could be done due to personal rights issues. Both would report a poetic gain, though. United in a very old art.

During the residency, Viktoria Arvayova is continuing to work on site-specific improvisation by experimenting with field recordings and material from the local landscape. The goals are: to develop a set of digital tools for site-specific sound performances, to establish a methodology for improvisation and composition within natural environments, and to organize a participatory workshop that break the boundary between audience and performer, focusing on listening and field recording in the local landscape.

Stay tuned for more news and invitations later on this Summer…

This residency is supported by the International Visegrad Fund.

Here some wonderful recordings of the spatial sound/light installation at KRA and the collaboration concert by Viktoria (SK) and Munis (IT).

By The USB-C
or: The Underwater Skiffle Band – Collaboration— BTW: Better Than Underground!

For the annual KRA participation in the worldwide annual online Réveil initiative, we developed a contribution within our preoccupation with water and the surrounding highlands.

Hranice 3-4 May 2025

Briefly, we are worried about water, how we use and destroy it, how it is being reduced also in the arts to a theme, or project, or material. Around us we see the lands drying out, agriculture neglecting and polluting it, people wasting it. Maybe a deeper understanding of water as a necessary environmental thing and a creative approach can make us care more in our daily life as well. So that is why we started to think of different ways of sonifying waterstreams and ponds, rivers and canals, lakes and seas.

The USB-C is working together with international as well as local artists and audience, which can vary in participation. It can go from building DIY underwater instruments to simply recording, streaming online, spatializing different streams/recordings, working on analysis and synthesis. But most of all: while being performative and creative and for sure: in and around the water!

Throughout 2025-26 we will perform in several locations and make new instruments, find new sonifications, listen to more diverse natural situations, and most of all: perform along, online and onsite. If you are interested in participating as a musician, organizer, listener or whatever, let us know! Welcome…

Fountains as reservoir of myth and memory

The origin of fountains was to control the water. I like the sound of the word “to tame” better, as it gives me the image of wanting to understand and control a foreign element that feels almost alive…and I believe that in the past we perceived the bodies of water with much less mundanity than today, being able to sense and see the “spirit” of the water and respect the ways in which it wants to behave.
Was the fountain the first-ever tool for taming water? Perhaps, humans and non-humans in the past were creating fountains, directing the water flows to gather water for reservoirs, without even knowing it. An example of a beaver constructing a dam with a small water cascade comes to my mind, but also smaller-scale insects and[a] birds could, of course, be considered.
(Human-made) fountains in the past were used for storing water for drinking and bathing. And only later did they become purely decorative. With our control over having enough water accessible came the control over water flow. What once originated out of scarcity for water and inability to control it is now an object of showing off our superiority over the aquatic element. Splashing water to any heights we like, in any direction we like, for days on end. Excessive bourgeois water jets, decorated with sculpted human-looking gods and figures.
In this anthropocentric era, we are slowly heading back to water scarcity in a different sense: climate switching between radical droughts or radical rain seasons causing floods.
The mortality of fountains comes into question. If we want the concept of fountains to survive, we have to find a new contemporary purpose for them.
Coming back to an anthropocentric note, I would say that man-made things are now inseparable from nature, and they are intertwined in various ways. Both positive and negative, mesmerizing, oddly aesthetic, and, of course, also dangerous ways. The best we can do is not to get rid of man-made (or as my feminist side likes to call it, “human-made”) objects completely but to shift our sensibilities towards them. Zoom in and find ways in which they can be used for more-than-human purposes, trying to shift the perspective from a purely human one to a more eco-centric one.
Zooming into the microcosm of the fountain:
(Contemporary) fountains are still mostly reservoirs with circulating water. This means that they also have enough stagnant water for cultivating various algae such as stoneworts or cyanobacteria. Stagnant water is also perfect for protozoa or certain insects, which can reproduce in the water. In the urban environment with little space for these species, fountains can work as a small shelter for what we mostly don’t even notice, but what is still essential for maintaining a balanced ecosystem.[b]
The title “Fountains as Reservoir for Myth and Memory” represents our curiosity to uncover this other mythology of the fountain. Zooming into its depths and listening to its universe of algae, bubbling stones, and insects visiting the small body of water. Uncovering this mythology can be used as a research tool. Listening to underwater fountain sounds with a hydrophone, observing what specific plants are thriving in the fountain pool, and watching the surrounding environment to see what kinds of birds, insects, pollinators, and plants thrive around the more humid fountain environment. There are many ways, and we simply invite you to shift the perspective.
To zoom in and find the myths.
Finding together the new purpose for the fountains.

Water is full of metaphors and a fountain therefore becomes a well of infinite meanings. (…) .Fountain ruins reflect the dichotomy of eternity and temporariness of our artificial interventions. They form a mythical environment, which is neither a form of a rationalized space for the drama or culturally appropriated masculine principle, nor an organic space for the comedy of female principle, it is their synthesis, a monoclinous space of the third gender, according to the American art and architecture theoretician Aaron Betsky, it functions as a counerarchitecture, appropriating, subverting, mirroring, and choreographing the orders of everyday life in new and liberating ways.
These mythical micro-spaces are detached from the common reality – the greyness and monotony of the housing estates and urban order. They are spaces for play of children and adults in their physical and metaphorical form.
(Martin Zaiček, “Bratislavské fontány”)

To speak about water is to speak about the bodies of many.
Water takes many forms, not only in its physical state but also in the ways it is carried and shaped. The personality of water is such that it can imitate any shape; pour water into a glass, and it inhabits that form. And we—humans—are composed of 60 to 75 percent water. Have you ever thought of yourself as a watery entity? I often wonder, when I drink a glass of water, where are you coming from? Are you from the mountains? Which river are you part of? What did you see on your journey to my cup?
Of course, these are my own conversations with water—slightly idealistic and naive, perhaps simple. I understand that there are human-made systems directing the flows of water from sources, whether they are rivers, lakes, reservoirs, or groundwater aquifers. I know that water must be treated before it is distributed to remove contaminants and meet health standards. From there, it can be carried to pumping stations that maintain pressure and ensure a constant flow into a network of pipes (the so-called water mains), which are buried underground and vary in size depending on the volume of water needed. This is part of the distribution network, where smaller pipes branch off from the mains to deliver water directly to homes, businesses, and public facilities. This whole distribution process is monitored to ensure that the water remains uncontaminated and that the system functions as it should.
Many, many years ago—something our cells may still remember—we drank the water we encountered on our journeys. It was the most precious matter, the source of life we not only ingested but also used in ceremonies and rituals. We had gods dedicated to water; we prayed to the skies and raised our glasses as a sign of thankfulness for this gift on Earth.
What is water for us nowadays when we barely drink five glasses a day but fill our baths with approximately 150 to 200 liters of warm water? Today, we call these stories and journeys of gods myths. When does something become mythical? I wonder. Perhaps it is when something takes on qualities that elevate it beyond the ordinary. In the context of water, its access, and distribution, what is ordinary, and what lies beyond it? Are our perfected water systems beyond the ordinary, or has drinking directly from water bodies become mythical? Would our ancestors consider our perfect distribution systems and access to water a myth of the future, or has our approach to water became mythical?[c]
These are my own conversations with water bodies,
what are yours?

Marieke Van Ransbeeck (BE) is a professional folk musician, baroque musician, composer and arranger. With her bagpipes she performs with various national and international folk and baroque projects. She mainly plays the Flemish bagpipes, Baroque Musette and Swedish bagpipes. At KRA she worked on extending the instruments with electronics.

Dear people of KRA
The people of the PAF residency advised me to contact you with my following question.
My name is Marieke Van Ransbeeck, I’m from Belgium and I play the Belgian bagpipes.
At the moment I’m creating a new production for Dranouter Music Centre. This is a production for bagpipes and electronics. It’s still in the development stage, but the aim is to do a first show on November ’24.
For the development of this music I would love to be a resident at KRA the 30th of April until the 12th of May. I wonder if there’s still a space left for me during that period?
I would need a piano and also electricity (preferably also a monitor if that’s present) for the creation process.
Wishing you a lovely day! And lots of hugs from Belgium!

Wetlands are vital ecosystems because they regulate the water cycle and prevent floods. They are critical habitats for diverse species, from migratory birds to fish and aquatic plants. At the same time, they provide essential ecosystem services such as water purification and carbon sequestration, significantly contributing to global environmental health. However, despite these critical functions, they are one of the most threatened habitats by human activities: it is estimated that between 64% and 71% of the planet’s wetlands have disappeared in the last century.

Climate change, desertification, loss of biodiversity, … It is daily in the media, EU is proposing new programs for a green approach esp. to the countryside. And it is certainly around us, also about us. In spring near Zastrán farmers were putting new drainage pipes in their fields, while the apples and plums are drying out on the trees. This year we had the warmest September on earth ever recorded (globally +1.5˚C!). Within these changes, water management is playing a crucial role today. One reads about international measures to capture and keep rainwater, protect groundwater, revitalize ponds and rivers by reconnecting them again, of course also reforestation and the return of (green) water energy! Regional history shows that until WW1 the Vysočina region was mainly using waterpower. Elsewhere water turbines have been successfully deployed instead of solar and wind devices, neutralizing the negative environmental impact, empowering small communities, and preserving bio diversity.

Time to bring these things under attention, and to provoke urgent changes.

In the weeks leading up to Réveil, with a small group of (young to old) creative local people, we were preparing different ways of recording sunrise. A workshop on microphones and devices, hydrophones and the different appearances of water, some preliminary walks and recordings. Not only water and the environment, but water is the environment, and we are literally running out of it… but let the sun rise with you! For Réveil we were setting up a combined live stream from 3 locations, each 7 kms apart. With thanks to everyone involved and interested over the last weeks… Enjoy the sounds of Sunrise her under (water).

For this year’s Vysočina’s Open Studios, 7 & 8 October 2023, we participated in the Zastávka194 constellation in Chotěboř. Zastávka is a combination of coworking, shoemaking and other freetime activities, concerts and performances, with a social café Kohout, clothes and book exchange spots (SWAP), and the open DIY makerspace buttulab.space where KRA is supporting electronics and media for creative purposes (only). For the occasion we were showing youngsters how to make a contact microphone, introducing them to soldering wires and components, and looking for the hidden sounds in your immediate environment, to think differently about music and instruments.

Workshop and Concert by Krzysztof Topolski (PL)
Thursday 24th August afternoon 16h, at Zastávka Chotěboř, entrance via kafé Kohout.
Evening public open air concert at 19h.

Earlier in Summer I met Mr. Bambuch. He mentioned that he used to sing a Polish song called “Czerwone Jabłuszko”. I knew it, had heard it many times, and remembered the melody. It was a very inspiring and joyful encounter, filled with music. I sang this song accompanied by Mr. Bambuch on piano in his living room. This gave me the idea to work out a piece with this traditional song in mind. It became the inspiration for organizing workshops and a concert. (KT)

During the workshops, we got to know the song, tried to sing it, and perhaps subjected it to a creative deconstruction. We also explored the very interesting historical context of the song’s origin. The starting point for our musical activities was merely the song itself. Together we prepared an improvised concert where vocal elements blend with percussion and electronic music, recordings from various locations, and elements of the acoustic landscape. After the workshops, there was a relaxed open post-workshop presentation.

The workshop was open for any creative musician, amateur or professional, of any age.

Art’s Birthday Like every year, for the participation in the global celebration, we played online, using open microphones in the KRA garden, Hranice. 17 Januari 2023. The event started also the localisation version of the Rural Development performances, involving artists and other creative people from the neighbourhood, visitors and residents. Visit https://www.artsbirthday.net/2023

Reveil #10 As an experiments we started a local rendering of the virtual band/theme Rural Development with a participation in the annual 24h networked event Reveil. We organized a couple of workshops about the idea of Field Recodings: how to create a sonic scan of a natural environment. A representable Field/Area/Array/Mesh/… Instead of recording at one place with different microphones in specific positions/angles, we sit in an area with whatever recording gear we have. This is all streamed to a central point that checks the relative positions of the participants, and generates a binaural/spatial representation. Maybe we can move slowly and force the model into a set of vectors. Maybe it does not sound right to our human ears, maybe the birds are disturbed by this strange behaviour. Maybe nothing works next time the sun is rising. After all we are a silly species trying to make sense of everything by avoiding observing only. Hranice 6-7 May 2023. Visit http://soundtent.org/soundcamp_reveil.html and you can listen to the early morning sunrise streams here.

On/Off #9 After 8 successful editions, the Mothcatchers are back in the cowshed! A fine selection of exquisite alternative bands all different in style, manners, taste and sound. Find out for yourself: July 1. Hranice. Or check out the bands online!

Residents and creative visitors During the summermonths we are receiving guests again, after a 2-3 year Corona-pauze. We will update the activities and references as we are enjoying their presence and creativity. Feel at home and play: Krzysztof Topolski (PL), Maarten Buyl and Raphael Malfliet (BE)

Krzysztof Topolski: Sound is a kind of touch The title of the project is inspired by the statement of Maryanne Amacher, one of the precursors of sound art. Sound is an energy that we can feel physically, a bit like touch, it is also a force that when used properly can build and unite, or break and destroy when used inappropriately. The project is to focus on the study of the sonic side of prejudices, discrimination, or fear, e.g. concerning the foreign, unknown, or strange. I would like to consider how hatred sounds, what are the sound manifestations of unaccepting the unknown, and what is the role of sound in the process of the radicalization of behavior and social relations. Numerous historical and contemporary manifestations of human sound activity will be recognized and studied. They will include language and sounds of discrimination. I will observe how sound divides people and radicalizes individuals, what is the acoustic effect of radicalization of behavior, where it occurs, and how it manifests conscious or unconscious acoustic violence. I would like to investigate the different sensibilities and attitudes concerning this topic across our countries, and regions, in an intercultural context. Special focus will be given to considerations of the state of musical creativity. In this respect, jazz and improvisation in music can be treated here as positive examples. An important aspect will relate to the reflection on the state of the modern soundscape in confrontation with the original acoustic environment of nature. The rural acoustic landscape differs from the urban one and is chosen differently by the inhabitants. Reflecting on these differences will also become part of the project. When implementing the project, I would like to consider how the sound “affects us” depending on its intention, that is whether it has the including or excluding role. What is the role of music, sound, and the broader soundscape in the process of exclusion, radicalization, or joining, inviting, uniting? In my project, I will also focus on audio field recordings of soundscapes, including spoken stories, archives research and texts, music and film and audio-visual works, instrumental recordings, and musical rehearsals. The inspiration will be phenomena in the field of acoustic ecology, improvised music, deep listening, electronic and electroacoustic music, broadcast, radio and internet transmissions, active co-creation, and sound performance. I hope to work with the body, voice, rhythm, and drums and percussion as a manifestation of pulse and time. I will also concentrate on neurodiversity and various aspects of the perception of signals and stimuli from the environment through the senses. This also applies, perhaps above all, to people with the autism spectrum, whose very different sensory perceptions of the external environment and unusual activities and skills are still often not accepted and ostracized. These people do not fit into the average imposed by the environment, therefore they are rejected. As a final result of the residency project, it is planned to create a composition and organize a concert with the participation of the local community, musicians, and not – musicians, composed of texts, images, voices, sounds, and music. https://culture.pl/en/artist/krzysztof-topolski-arszyn

The Governors Sound artists Maarten Buyl and Raphael Malfliet are both based in Antwerp, Belgium and have been working together on different projects within the context of ChampdAction (BE), a former production platform for interdisciplinary works departing from sound and music. Even though their individual work is very different from one another, their common ground lies in the importance they address to the act of listening in social, historical and ecological contexts. From here they have engaged themselves with setting up a field recording practice and drawn influence from recordists such as Chris Watson, Jana Winderen and Mark Vernon to create fictional audio portraits. These storytelling’s dramaturgy consist of documented and collected sounds that embody a place, atmosphere or situation and are preserved as much as possible without the use of sound processing tools. During the Kra.Land Sound Of The Village residency Maarten and Raphael will focus on the Doubrava valley, between the Doubrava river and the Železné hory, and its rich mining history, with the extraction of silver and coal being the primary industry in the region. Though all mines have been closed and transformed into parks and forests, choosing this area as their primary region for recording addresses the economic and environmental influence of this region on current local communities. In coordination with Kra Kravin Rural Arts, a sharing of the process is set up at the end of the residency period. Watch and listen, but meantime read https://www.raphaelmalfliet.com/governors

The year went fast. Covid warnings diminished. KRA continued on the dual track it had started the years before: combining international events with local participations. During the Corona years, we stopped the residencies, festivals and workshops temporarily, but at the same time started up the buttulab DIY makerspace, together with Zastavka194 in Chotěboř. Several workshops (for instance about sound, music and 3D printing) but also concerts were organized there. At Kra we cut the grass for some limited outdoor dancing and well-being workshops.

Also, a number of internet events were organized, mainly as international collaborations: the performance String Sextets for Art’s Birthdayon January 17th 2022, and the 24 hour openmike/concert celebration Réveil of sunrise/dawn May 1st 2022. Also in May we were having a trip to Bratislava for a field recording workshop within the international sound art project Eavesdropping Danube by Polina Khatsenka (BY) and others.

The major Summer event was a production participation for the house band Rural Development. For Cultural Capital Esch 2022’s Radio Art Zone, they set up a 22 hour live performance. This combined an outdoor open microphone network with additional instrumentation based on the provided natural sounds. Kra was the headquarters connecting Berlin, Den Hague, Kerminy and Tokyo to the art radio studio in Esch. In the aftermath part of the performance was extended to Gdansk for the opening of Nina Czegledy’s art-science exhibition Sensoria at the City Gallery Laznia, situated in the old harbour. Most of the preparations were done outdoors at Kra, based on previous setups extending this experience in the audience participatory performance with a 40-piece choir Fanfara Gdansk.
