An axe to grind is not a bone to pick. It is to have ulterior motives, a hidden agenda. Think about it. You need to be aware of people with an axe to grind because they will manipulate and use you. If not to turn the grindstone then for some other favor. It's a bit like not inviting the vampire into your house. Or a Trump into a white house.
