All voters in our country are, or should be, independents! That is the mantra of our wonderful and successful guest, Governor Gary Johnson, who was the Libertarian candidate for President in 2012 (with your host as his VP running mate) and in 2016. What would our country look like had he/we been elected? Transparency and financial responsibility at all levels of the federal government, facing problems directly and openly, as he did as Governor of New Mexico, listening to people about their problems and suggestions, and getting the government out of areas it doesn't belong, like healthcare and education. As Governor Johnson describes it, he is a stickler for the truth, and he would have gotten knowledgeable and forthright people into his cabinet, and listened to them! As he said when he asked me to be his running mate, Jim, feel free to disagree with me publicly during the campaign, but tell people what my position is too, and be sure you're right. Our guest is an expert in the history of our Constitutional Convention, and came up with the idea to use my new musical, Convention: the Birth of America as the theme for a new show called Becoming America. America is a Perfect Idea. The United States of America is a Work in Progress. That captures who we are! This week's guest is Larisa Bolivar, an immigrant from Peru who was raised in Virginia by parents who fell for the DARE agenda that all marijuana use was harmful. So she and her husband became Cannabis Refugees and moved to Colorado, where she has been and is now heavily involved in the legal distribution of cannabis both for medical and recreational purposes with the Cannabis Consumers Coalition. Larisa says that not only is cannabis an anti-inflammatory, it also promotes balance in our systems, minds and spirits, and also helps our relationships with others. And legal cannabis has quality control, enforces age restrictions and does not provide dealers who want their customers to move on to hard drugs. But she also has first-hand experience in seeing how many governments are putting needless licensing requirements onto legitimate distributors, which mostly crowds out small businesses. This is a timely issue presented by a most knowledgeable lady.
this week's guest Manny Klausner, Esq. is a mainstay, titan and pillar in the Libertarian Party! He is an expert in constitutional, election and media law and business litigation matters who was converted to the Free Market and Liberty while a student at NYU Law School. Since then he has been hugely involved with Reason Magazine, Reason Foundation, Federalist Society, Institute for Justice and the Individual Rights Foundation. If it is an important and positive Libertarian movement, Manny Klausner has his fingerprints on it. Klausner's key to a successful society: Voluntary Consent. Raised in a terribly abusive family, placed in 18 foster homes between ages 13 and 18, kicked out of the system at age 18 with no resources, human-trafficked, prostituted, drug-addicted, raped and left for dead. So how could this week's guest, Ms. Lauri Burns, have survived, much less become a genuine Guardian Angel for hundreds of young ladies who suffered a similar fate? Fear is the best way for governments to gain power over us and to reduce our Liberty. Our guest today is Dr. Sam Sugar, who is a general internal medicine physician in Florida. Based upon a bad experience he had when a guardian was appointed by the court for one of his family members, he researched the issue and found that this type of abuse is widespread all around our country. So he shared his findings in his book called Guardianships & the Elderly: The Perfect Crime, and now he shares his experiences and insights with us. Judge Jim was the presiding judge of the probate court in his county and had never seen instances of what Dr. Sugar described. But based upon this interview Judge Jim promised publicly to try to get the FBI to investigate this situation. Personally I have never met or even heard about anyone who has attained the status of Eagle Scout who was not successful in life. And this week's guest, Mayor Ethan Reynolds of New Carlisle, Ohio, is no exception. At the age of 19, having just graduated from high school, Ethan was aghast that his city was about $5.6 million in debt and not doing anything about it. So he ran for city council on a platform of financial responsibility using the slogan of We were borrowing money and no one was speaking for the average citizen -- and won! And, over time and through Ethan's leadership, other Libertarian-minded people also ran for and won positions on the city council such that, when he stepped down as Mayor in May of 2019, the city had a budget surplus of $1.8 million. Hear first hand on this episode as to how this came about, and maybe you will want to elect the equivalent of Mayor Ethan Reynolds to be on your city government as well!
In today's edition, New Jersey attorney Charles X. Gormally explains how governments all-too-often promote programs that sound good to the voters, but in reality don't work. These include rent control and healthcare, as well as attempts to prohibit or over-regulate cannabis. Hear insights on these subjects from a different perspective. If the incentives are adjusted to promote businesses to provide low-cost housing, controlled cannabis and quality healthcare, that is what we will receive. But if bureaucrats ignore those incentives, the results will be products of lower quality and higher cost or, with cannabis, the illegal Black Market. As only our second repeat guest, former Congressman, State Senator and business school and law school Dean Tom Campbell gives us great insights about how an understanding of economics and incentives can result in prosperity. Citing his teacher Dr. Milton Friedman's comment that You get more of what you subsidize and less of what you tax, Dean Campbell shows us how government has been subsidizing bureaucracy and poor results, and taxing productivity -- to everyone's loss, except the bureaucrats. He further states persuasively that the FDA, which slows down and makes much more expensive the process of developing and distributing medicines, should be reformed by allowing it to ban medicines that are found not to be safe, but allow us as customers to decide if they are effective. He also makes a persuasive case that we should change from an income tax to a value-added consumption tax. (Tax consumption instead of income!) So many people will do so much better addressing their problems if they know where to turn for help. On April 8, 1992 I did something quite unusual for a sitting trial court judge: I held a press conference. (Judges don't do that!) But as a former criminal defense attorney in the Navy JAG Corps, federal prosecutor in Los Angeles and, at that time, trial court judge for 9 years, I had seen first hand why and how our policy of Drug Prohibition was not working. And who better to discuss it than a conservative judge in a conservative county who had never used any form of illicit drugs. So in this show I will explain my experiences and my transformation from a former drug warrior to someone who favors a policy that reduces the harms that can and will come to societies by the presence of these sometimes harmful and addicting substances. Yes, the drugs can be harmful, but it is the drug money that causes a majority of the problems! (Think about the problems in Mexico!) And, I hope you agree, it is not only all right to discuss these issues, we are perpetuating the problems if we do not!

And one effective way is the Peer Court program, administered by the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Orange County. This weeks guest, Eoin Kreditor, Esq., is a long time active supporter of CRFOCs Peer Court. This program, with the assistance of the County Probation Department and various police departments, brings real juvenile delinquency cases to 18 different high schools each school year, and empanels high school jurors who then ask probing questions both to the subject and the subjects parents about why this offense occurred, and what the subjects want their future lives to be like. Instead, we should bring back competition and individual decision-making by again making us partners in our own healthcare needs. We lead the world in incarcerating our people, illicit drugs are freely available, especially to our children, and our drug money causing violence and corruption here and all around the world. But we have hope, because if we regulate and control marijuana like wine, and bring these other sometimes dangerous and addicting drugs under the control and guidance of medical professionals, like has happened in Switzerland for years, harmful drug usage will go down, and so will the crime and violence.
