Suicide is considered by some to be a shameful, selfish act, but guest Drew Bergman has decided to speak publicly about this issue to decrease stigma and perhaps save lives. Drew, now a marketing and business student at Temple University, suffered from depression since the 7th grade, and began to self harm. Eventually, he attempted suicide twice before bouncing back and finding his footing as a suicide prevention advocate. Joining Lisa and Drew is Dr. Mary Morrison, the Vice Chair for Research in Psychiatry at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple.

On this new episode of Bouncing Back, Lisa Bien talks to Jullian Taylor, a senior and football player at Temple University, who works to inspire others and serve as a mentor to his younger teammates. He tells his story and how he started off as someone who was unsure of himself and not working to his full potential, but through hard work, he achieved healthy self esteem. To lend her expert knowledge, Monica Williams, a local life coach, also joins the set.

The road to redemption for two guests is the main focus of discussion this episode of Bouncing Back. By taking responsibility for their actions and empowering themselves despite adversity, they now join Lisa Bien to share words of wisdom to those that may be dealing with similar problems.

Chip Frenette, then a Temple student, became involved in a raucous lifestyle that landed him behind bars. But with a new life outlook he began a journey on the straight and narrow, with Temple as a foundation. Tyrone Werts was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, but with a commuted sentence he was able to turn things around. He now serves as a public relations consultant for Temple's Inside-Out program. 

The final guest is Professor Jerry Stahler, a clinical psychologist working in the Geography and Urban Studies department at Temple University, who speaks on his work studying those that have grown up in difficult neighborhoods. In their discussion, the stigma of imprisonment is highlighted as a continuing cause of turmoil.

Ooka ("Richard") Lee is an international student from Dalian, China, who is majoring in Media Studies Production, a TSG member of the Main Campus Board, and an international resident coordinator. Before becoming so heavily involved in campus life, Lee struggled with isolation and finding a place to fit into. Lee tells his story to Lisa Bien: his journey of coming to America and becoming withdrawn from life around him, but slowly going on to find communities around Temple where he found companionship. Joining the program for the second half is Martyn Miller, the Director for International Services. Miller expounds upon assisting students through the process of coming the USA, introducing them to American culture, and how Temple students can forge stronger bonds with international students.

Host Lisa Bien invites student Ethan Wasserman to share how his life has been impacted since receiving a diagnosis of ADHD in kindergarten. Ethan describes how this disorder not only made it hard for him to succeed academically, but also caused him to feel mentally inferior, which in turn damaged his self-esteem. Utilizing the Wellness Resource Center (HEART) on campus, he has since learned techniques to cope with ADHD, which allow him to help others as a peer educator and mentor at Temple.

Providing clinical and general insight into this condition, Lisa Bien also speaks to Lauren Highsmith, a Temple alumna and current Student Resources Coordinator for the University’s Disability Resources and Services department.

About two million American adults, or about 1 percent of the population age 18 and older, have bipolar disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Bipolar disorder can show up in many costumes. It can be happy or sad, euphoric or desperate, energized or exhausted. Lisa Bien invites Sarah Zigler, a Temple student that lives day-in and day-out with bipolar disorder. Opening up to Bien, Zigler touches on her paralyzing depression and her darkest moments dealing with bipolar disorder.

Later Bien brings in Kate Schaeffer, the Program Coordinator for Alcohol & Other Drugs, Interpersonal Violence, and Mental Health with the Wellness Resource Center, to speak about her work with Temple students fighting bipolar disorder, symptoms to be aware of when meeting someone with bipolar disorder, and what resources are available at Temple for students in any state of poor mental health.

Host Lisa Bien helps bring light to an issue that is sometimes considered taboo: suicidal depression. Temple alumna Garden Wellington Logan expresses her feelings of grief and guilt after the suicide of her brother William.  Garden looked to resources such as grief counselors and organizations like the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to answer her to gain a greater understanding of suicide prevention. Joining the two later in the program is psychiatrist Thomas Newmark who gives viewers a list of warning signs that may indicate if a person close to you is contemplating suicide.

Bo shares how he learned to accept himself and build relationships outside of his family unit instead of choosing to live a life of self-hatred and duplicity.

Bouncing Back is an effort to give Temple students and other viewers insight into their own misgivings concerning self worth. In the pilot, Temple alumna Anna Tate shares her experiences with a debilitating eating disorder and explains how she fought her self-doubt to “bounce back” and regain her love for life and herself. Also appearing alongside Lisa is Temple professor of education psychology, Dr. Frank Farley. Farley, who has appeared on Good Morning America and The Today Show, shares his expert advice on the subject of self love.
