Inbetweeners are the animators who draw the pages in between the lead animators’ key frames. The in between doesn’t get a lot of attention, but it is essential to move the animation forward. The same concept applies to the “in between era” that connects Walt Disney’s passing to the Disney Renaissance. A tumultuous time period which often only gets a few chapters in history and is usually known only for mediocre box-office hits, now has its own book. Courtney and Emily welcome storyboard artist, screenwriter, director, and author, Stephen Anderson, to talk about that period that took us from the Walt Disney era to the Disney Renaissance in his book, “Disney In-Between: The Lost Years 1966-1986.” Anderson’s book gives you an in depth history of lessons animators, writers, directors, and studio executives learned while navigating how to run the Disney studio and Disney brand without Walt.

Many are familiar with Disney’s theme parks, cruise ships, resorts, and broader media empire, but did you know Disney tried to build a ski resort in Mineral King, California in the 1960s? Courtney and Emily are joined by authors Greg Glasgow and Kathryn Mayer to discuss how this resort never broke ground despite over a decade of planning. Their book, “Disneyland on the Mountain: Walt, the Environmentalists, and the Ski Resort that Never Was”, does a deep dive into this niche piece of Disney history that is often overshadowed by the simultaneous planning and opening of the Walt Disney World Resort. However, despite Mineral King’s unbuilt legacy, its roots can still be found in the theme parks and resorts around the world.

During the Disney100 centennial celebration of the Walt Disney Company, Disney’s animated films and theme parks have been getting a lot of attention. But what about its live action legacy? Many may associate Disney live action with recent remakes or Marvel and Star Wars, but with over 300 films, Disney has 70+ years producing live action films. To celebrate this medium, hosts Courtney and Emily welcome back author Spencer Wright to talk about his new book, “The Enchanted Disney: Stories of Walt, Hollywood, and Live-Action Film.” Wright wanted to celebrate actors of the Hollywood era in which Walt created the Walt Disney Studios. Actors such as Suzanne Pleshette, Debbie Reynolds, Maurice Chevalier, and Peter Lorre may be best known for films from other cinema studios, but they also shared their talents with Disney and helped shape the contemporary live action Disney studio we know today.

What’s better than one podcast episode? Two podcast episodes! It's a Disney Leadership Duo crossover between Book of the Mouse Club and Notably Disney.

Courtney and Emily welcome Brett Nachman of the Notably Disney podcast back to the show to talk about Disney Legend Jim Cora’s memoir, “Not Just a Walk in the Park: My Worldwide Disney Resorts Career.” Cora started his career as a park operations trainer and went on to lead Disneyland International which was responsible for bringing the magic of Disney parks to Tokyo and Paris. From his grandmother yogurt starter to his encounter with Walt Disney to opening Disneyland Paris, Jim Cora’s story teaches us to grow roots wherever life plants you.

In tandem with this discussion, your hosts join Brett on a new episode of Notably Disney to talk about Dick Nunis’ memoir “Walt's Apprentice: Keeping the Disney Dream Alive.” Both Nunis and Cora worked in park operations and helped transition and grow the Walt Disney Company and theme parks after Walt’s passing and have many lessons in leadership to share from their combined 87 years of experience in the company.

Consider yourself at home with this final installment of the British Invasion Summer Series. Hosts Courtney and Emily welcome back Dr. Doug Kern and Dr. Paul Cote as guest readers to compare Charles Dickens’ 1838 novel, Oliver Twist, to Disney’s 1988 animated film Oliver and Company. Drastically different, you will not recognize Billy Joel’s beloved portrayal of Dodger from the Artful Dodger in Dickens’ original story, but both the film and the novel have their own merits that make each a classic. You do not have to worry, the conclusion of this summer series has plenty of street savoir faire which might encourage you to revisit this pre Disney Renaissance film.

“You Must Be This Tall” to ride, but there’s no height requirement to listen! Consider this your “Keys to the Kingdom” backstage tour of this fun theme park novel, inspired by the experiences of a former Disney Cast Member. Courtney and Emily interview Natalie Keller Reinert about her book “You Must Be This Tall,” a fictional story set in America the Beautiful theme park featuring a cast of Patriot employees. Natalie’s multiple perspective story takes readers through the Patriot and park guest reactions to the company’s leaked plans to refurbish a beloved opening day attraction. A social media blogger causes further trouble for the frontline working Patriots who are just trying to get through the day with a smile on their face and their initial love of the park intact. The book opens the door to readers to become a Patriot employee for the day and experience what it is like to work in immersive entertainment. Any former front-line worker reading will definitely identify with Tabby, Sonia, and Antonia’s day to day park experiences in retail, attractions, and moving up into leadership positions. Thank you to our favorite magic makers who make the parks a welcoming escape from reality. Like the Reinert’s dedication says “You’re the heroes of this fairytale.”

Drama, romance, runaway teenagers, and…Walt Disney World? Believe it or not, Walt Disney World was featured as a setting in a Harlequin Romance novel in 1986. Courtney and Emily finally got their hands on this out of print novel by Clare Richmond and are spilling the tea on the book that fascinates Disney Twitter. Detective Daniel McGuinn and Barbara Emerson are searching for Barbara’s step-daughter who runs away from Baltimore to Walt Disney World. In true Harlequin fashion, Daniel and Barbara fall fast for one another and are looking for love as much as they are looking for Jacqui in Epcot’s World Showcase. Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair! Courtney and Emily return to their ongoing series, Fairytale Favorites, with a comparison of Grimm’s Fairytales “Rapunzel” and Disney Animated Studios’ 50th animated feature, “Tangled.” Like most fairytales, the original source material left Disney a lot of room for interpretation but did you know that the story actually moved from Italy, to France, then to Germany? Rapunzel’s history is as long as her hair and changes more times than Pascal during a game of hide and seek. If you’ve got a dream, you do not want to miss the discussion around this fairytale favorite.

Courntey and Emily wrap up the Legendary Summer Series with Dame Julie Andrews’ second memoir “Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years.” Andrews’ memoir takes place from 1962-1986 starting with her Hollywood debut in Disney’s “Mary Poppins” and ending with her second husband’s semi autobiographical film, “That’s Life!” Andrews reflects on the work and self discovery it took to balance a new career on the silver screen and a home life which included divorce, a second marriage, two step children, two adopted children, therapy, multiple family emergencies, and living around the world. In between hardships, Andrews also humbly shares all of the amazing opportunities and memories she has making movies and learning how to use and harness her talents. Courtney and Emily conclude the episode again talking about the criteria to become a Disney Legend and discuss how Julie Andrews managed to achieve it with just one film.

Courtney and Emily continue their Legendary Summer Series with “From Disneyland's Tom Sawyer to Disney Legend: The Adventures of Tom Nabbe” by Tom Nabbe. A Disney 55er, Tom Nabbe was a newspaper boy hired as a young teenager by Walt Disney himself to personify the youthful adventurer, Tom Sawyer, at Disneyland’s Tom Sawyer’s Island. However, his Disney career wasn’t limited to the shores of Rivers of America. In his 48 year career, he also spent time operating attractions, supervising food and beverage locations, and managing warehouses. He helped open Walt Disney World, Epcot, and Disneyland Paris but is most known for the Nabbe Grabber to help guests retrieve lost items in the parks. His recognition on Main Street and as a Disney Legend is well deserved reminding us that anyone can become a living legend.

Let’s get together yeah yeah yeah…for a Legendary Summer Series! This summer, Courtney and Emily are reading memoirs of Disney Legends. This episode kicks off the summer with “Forever Young” by Hayley Mills. Most known for her performances in Pollyanna(1960) and The Parent Trap (1961), Hayley made six films for Disney and grew up on the silver screen right before the eyes of her audience. Her memoir however, tells the story of the growing up she had to do off screen as she transitioned from a child actor to a young adult. Hayley Mills’ expert performance is extended to her writing. Her vulnerability and melancholic reflection pulls readers into her remarkable story. Courtney and Emily discuss her story through the films Mills made for the Disney Studios and why she is deserving of the Disney Legends Award.

It was all started by a …rabbit? The rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit were reacquired by Walt Disney Company in 2006, but prior to his homecoming, few people knew about Walt’s first cartoon character. Oswald was left to a few paragraphs or the footnotes of Disney history books, until David Bossert came along. In celebration of Oswald’s 95th birthday, hosts Courtney and Emily are joined by the author of “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons.” Bossert discloses how a casual online article turned into a multi-year search for the lost cartoons and a book that gave Oswald a chance to take center stage. Oswald was only created and produced by Walt Disney and his animation studio for one year. It was a tragic parting, but without the lesson’s Walt learned in the movie business with Oswald, Mickey Mouse and Snow White may have never graced the silver screen. Oswald truly is a lucky rabbit for the Walt Disney Company. Walt Disney once said “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” And Walt was right. Over 60 years later, Disneyland has evolved to include new lands, attractions, and a second park. But what was the park like from 1955-1966 when Walt walked down Main Street and took a Rocket to the Moon in Tomorrowland? David Alpert, host of E-Ticket to Broadway, lends his Disneyland expertise to hosts Courtney and Emily as they explore the Walt years of Disneyland in Marcy Carriker Smothers’ “Walt’s Disneyland: A Walk in the Park with Walt Disney.” Marcy Carriker Smothers takes guests clockwise from Mainstreet to Tomorrowland to see the park through Walt’s eyes. Meticulously researched, the first hand accounts from Walt, the Disney family, and Imagineers, paired together with dozens of photographs from the Walt Disney Archives will make you feel like you are really there. And you will be surprised how much Disneyland has stayed the same despite its many evolutions. Be it 1955 or 2022, some things never change. As Walt also said, “Disneyland is your land.”

“Marley was dead to begin with…” and what a beginning. Who knew a ghost story would be associated with the merriest time of the year? For their seasonal selection, Courtney and Emily are joined by guest reader Dr. Paul Cote to analyze Charles Dickens’ classic, "A Christmas Carol". The tale has been adapted for the stage since its publication in 1843, with film and tv adaptations to follow. Disney has three Christmas Carols for audiences to enjoy. First, in 1983 with the short film Mickey’s Christmas Carol, then nearly 10 years later as a partnership with The Jim Henson Company in 1992 and most recently in 2009 as a motion capture animation starring Jim Carrey. Fly with Courtney, Emily, and Paul over London through Christmas films past to discuss all three in comparison to the original text, and in the words of Tiny Tim, “God bless us everyone.”

If a collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali seems surreal, that’s because it is, literally. Hosts Courtney and Emily welcome back Dr. Douglas Kern to the podcast to visit a 2015 Walt Disney Family Museum exhibit through its commemorative book titled, Disney and Dali: Architects of the Imagination, to discuss the friendship between the two artists and, at the time, their unrealized animated short, Destino. The project’s completion in 2003 and the opening of Walt Disney World Resort’s Gran Destino Tower in 2019 enlightened many fans, including your hosts, to Disney and Dali’s friendship and their mutual admiration for surrealism, animation, and cinema. To most, Disney and Dali would seem an unlikely pairing, but as the Oscar nominated animated short, Destino, and artifacts from the Walt Disney Family Museum and The Salvador Dalí Museum proved, the two artists were destined to work together.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort, Courtney and Emily are honoring Cast Member contributions to the park through Jeff Heimbuch’s book “Main Street Windows: A Complete Guide to Disney’s Whimsical Tributes.” Honoring a Cast Member with a window on Mainstreet dates back to opening day of Disneyland in 1955, a tradition started by Walt Disney himself. Walt Disney World followed suit and opened with cast member windows in 1971 as did every international park in the coming years. Cast Members made one man’s dream into a reality, so happy anniversary Walt Disney World and thank you to the dreamers and doers for 50 year of magical memories.

She’s a supergirl and she’s here to save the world...or at least not pass out in her high school debate class. Twenty years ago, the world met Mia Thermopolis in the Princess Diaries. This film gave Anne Hathaway her royal debut to the silver screen starring alongside the practically perfect Julie Andrews as the Queen, who reveals to her granddaughter that she is no average teenager, but the heir to the Genovian throne. The Princess Diaries has everything we loved about a 2000s film - butterfly clips, scooters, and a rom com makeover montage. While we hold a special place in our hearts for this 2001 film, it actually has its roots in a multi-volume series! Join hosts Courntey and Emily along with their friend and guest, Leeann, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Meg Cabot’s The Princess Diaries as they discuss the many differences between the film and its original text as well as all the moments that make this story a Disney live-action classic. If she doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will. Hosts Courtney and Emily discuss Maureen Johnson’s, “Hello, Cruel Heart,” in honor of Disney’s latest live action film, “Cruella.” Before Cruella became the fur frenzied fashion icon that we know from the 1961 animated film, 101 Dalmatians, Cruella was Estella. “Hello, Cruel Heart” is a young adult novel that takes place before the events of “Cruella” focusing on Estella's (Cruella) teenage years as an aspiring fashion designer in 1967 London. You’ll be surprised how little Dalmatian there is in the book, but instead you get the fabulous fashion and music scene of the swinging ‘60s. Before you watch “Cruella”, enjoy “Hello, Cruel Heart.” You might identify with this Disney villain more than you realize.

For women’s history month, Courtney and Emily immersed themselves in the stories of the working women of the Walt Disney Animation studio during its classic and golden age. Often the story of women in the early days of Disney Animation begins in Ink and Paint, but author Nathalia Holt instead focused on the more male dominated work spaces like the story, concept art, and animation departments. Moved by the tribulations and triumphs of Bianca Majoli, Grace Huntington, Retta Scott, Sylvia Holland, and Mary Blair, Courtney and Emily reflect on the legacy of these women who were integral to the Disney animated features beloved today.

Today, the world knows of the Muppets and the magic of puppetry, but Kermit the Frog and Sesame Street didn’t come out of thin air. They were born of Jim Henson’s creativity and work ethic. From the early days of Sam and Friends, to Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth, Jim Henson’s passion for puppetry created a new medium for storytelling that today is accepted as the same gold standard as any Walt Disney creation.

Our current Instagram and TikTok culture is most associated with content creation, but Disney fans have been spreading the magic over the web since the 1990s. Join your hosts Courtney and Emily for a podcast party about “It All Started With a Blog: Detangling the Wide Web of Disney Bloggers ” by Paul Lane. Each princess is distinct in her character, story, and art which resonates just as uniquely with every person who follows her on her journey. The Disney Princess is a powerhouse brand of the Walt Disney Company and has created many milestones and magical moments using the art of animation storytelling. Experience this journey with your hosts Courtney and Emily as they review “The Disney Princess: A Celebration of Art and Creativity” by award winning author and animation historian Charles Solomon. As his research and analysis shows, it was not by chance that every princess is an individual worthy of her own recognition; it was by design.

He can do it all; animation, character, story, staging, design, theme park attractions. He is one of Walt’s nine old men, his renaissance man, Marc Davis. Marc is well known for classic Disney attractions such as the Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Haunted Mansion. And what better way to see the attractions through Marc’s eyes than hearing about them in his own words. Pete Doctoer and Christopher Merrit’s “Marc Davis in His Own Words: Imagineering the Disney Theme Parks” allows readers to meet Marc for themselves. In this episode, Courtney and Emily, meet Marc in volume one and explore his career from his early days in animation to his transition to WED and creating attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean.

Walt Disney once said, "There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on treasure island." Like us, Walt was inspired by books and enjoyed reading. If not, we would not have Disney’s animated Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, or 101 Dalmatians nor live action films Swiss Family Robinson, Pollyanna, or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Walt learned the power of storytelling from books and brought them to life in his films and theme park. On this episode, hosts Courtney and Emily are joined again by Jim Korkis to talk about the books that inspired Walt Disney to become a master storyteller.

Hosts Courtney and Emily are joined by film historian and author, J.B.Kaufman, to discuss his book, The Making of Walt Disney’s Fun and Fancy Free. Take a trip back to 1947 for one of Walt Disney’s legendary package films featuring “Bongo” and “Mickey and the Beanstalk”. Both features were in extensive development since the 1930s and changed animators and directors multiple times before becoming the double feature short known today. Package films are not among the most popular Disney Animated Classics, but as J.B. Kaufman demonstrated in his book, a film does not have to be a box office hit to be significant to Disney and animation history.

Happy Women’s History Month! Hosts Courtney and Emily celebrate the hundreds of unsung female heroines of The Walt Disney Company, the inkers and painters of animated films. Mindy Johnson’s Ink and Paint traces the role of women from the creation of Walt Disney’s Alice Comedies to the computer colored features of “Disney Renaissance” classics like Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin or Lion King. Women have always been a part of The Walt Disney Company, but their story is rarely told in such colorful detail.
