In part one, Tom explained the Theory of Entrainment and his “aha!” moment when he realized that something in music had changed post 1995.
We had inadvertently lost the natural interpersonal musical entrainment, which occurs between artists and their music and their audience as a result of the mass adoption of digital technology. Tom's prior experience as a recording engineer came into play as he began to advance his hypothesis.

Well, Happy New Year and welcome to this week's episode of #ForWhatIt'sWorthwithBlakeMelnick. This is part two of our episode, #UnderstandingthMotivationtoInnovate with my guest, #Dr.TerrySoleas from #QueensUniversity. Dr. Soleas's seminal research on the factors which motivate people to innovate is key to making innovation more understandable, accessible, and actionable to individuals and organizations alike.
We need to resist thinking about innovation as the preserve of geniuses, and we need to avoid lionizing individuals and giving them singular attribution for large scale innovations and inventions. We need to begin to focus on the process of innovation as a collaborative knowledge building effort to address complex social challenges.
In part one, Dr. Soleas and I attempted to clarify the difference between invention and innovation. We discussed his personal motivations behind his research, the desire for social justice to ensure that those who have the drive to innovate are able to do so. In part two, we explore the dimension of cost and and expectancies from and motivations for innovation, as well as the design considerations which formed the basis for his research ...for what it's worth.

This week on #ForWhatItsWorthwithBlakeMelnick an episode of #TheSpaceinBetween called #LittleFeatAG.
As our listeners know, we've been doing a fairly deep dive into the music of Little Feat. I had a great interview with Mr. Bill Payne, co-founder and pianist for the band, and during that interview we discussed the need to encourage new listeners to Little Feat. What came out of the interviews, both with Bill and with some of the fans on the street before their show in Seattle this past summer was Little Feat fans are a little bit stuck in the past.
For many hardcore Little Feat fans, the band essentially ended with the death of Lowell George in 1979. And yet the band has continued to evolve and progress and introduce new musical stylings along with a range of new vocalists following the death of Lowell George over 40 years ago.
In this episode we're going to take you on a interactive musical journey into the music of Little Feat A.G. We've created a public Spotify playlist with all the songs that we discuss in this episode.
In the show information we've put chapter markers for each of the records we discuss. If you want to listen to part of the episode and then listen to a couple of songs from a particular record and then flip back again and listen to the interview, you can use the markers for each record in the show notes and get right back to where you left off.

I spent a lot of time listening to interviews given by Bill over the years , looking for a different angle, something that we could talk about that perhaps nobody has talked about before.
One of the comments Bill made in one interview was, "We lost Lowell George, we lost Richie Hayward. We lost Paul Barrere - If we were to lose Bill Payne, Little Feat would still survive"

We have an exciting announcement for y’all! We are going to be having #BillPayne, Co-Founder and Pianist extraordinaire of #LittleFeat as a guest on #ForWhatitsWorthwithBlakeMelnick and #TheSpaceinbetween!
This will be a multipart experience encompassing the journey from #VictoriaBC to #SeattleWa to see #LittleFeats 45 Anniversary Tour of their masterpiece live record, #WaitingforColumbus.
We’ll be #puttingonoursalinshoes and jumping on the ferry from Victoria to Seattle harbour, On route we will interview #FeatFans onboard and later on the streets of Seattle prior to the show.
We have been given permission to record at the show, so we’ll bring those recordings your way as well, and we will also be conducting “spot interviews” following the performance on Aug. 6th.
AND on August 9th, Bill Payne will join me as a guest on the show!

This week on #TheSpaceInbetween, #AnsweringTheStones another moment in time from Tom Locke's great new book by the same name
In the late fifties and early sixties, music fans were introduced to answer records, songs that were sometimes a parody or a sequel to established hits.
A few that come to mind are Jeanie Black's, "He'll have to Stay" in 1960. The answer record to Jim Reeves smash hit of 1959, 1960, "He'll Have to Go", Jody Miller's 1965, "Queen of the House" the answer to Roger Miller's 1965 smash hit, King of the Road and Leslie Gore's, 1963, "Judy's Turn to Cry" the follow up record to her hit, "It's My Party."
In most cases, these answer records usually came out a few months after the success of the records, they were emulating. One exception to this rule, however, was an answer record that took eight years before it made it on the charts. Recognized today as a core rock and roll record, it went all the way to number one.

This week on #forwhatit'sworthwithBlakeMelnick. is the next instalment in our #PasstheJam series, called #ManofaThousandFaces. #PasstheJam, highlights the work of both experienced and emerging musicians. For the past month or so. We've been featuring the music of our current artist in residence, #HeatherGemmell for all the intros and outros to the show.
It's now time for Heather to join me in passing the jam to an exciting new artist. Our next artist in residence is a two time Juno nominee. He has been composing and performing in Canada for over five decades. He is a prolific songwriter and composer. In 1986, he was nominated for a #JunoAward for his song #MonawiththeChildren on #TrueNorthRecords. He was nominated for a second Juno in 2004 for the Best Children's record for #AntsinYourPants.
He leads #TheLouisianaSnowblowers, a local roots blues, jazz combo, and plays drums in #ThreeCordJohnny, one of Toronto's premier, R and B collectives. He is the guitarist in the touring show. #WhiskeyJackPresentsStoriesandSongsofStompingTom. A multi-instrumentalist, he co-founded and led the monthly #RoosterUkeJam in Toronto and co-produced #CanadaUke's ...and he was a guest on our premier episode of our new series, #IntheCompanyofReadersandWriters ...For What it's Worth

This week on #TheSpaceinBetween, another #MomentinTime from #TomLocke's new book by the same name. In this episode Tom pays tribute to Bubble Gum music with a 1969 hit single.
According to an early 1969 article in #Cashbox Magazine, a Welsh newspaper called #MiningNews had mentioned the hard rock music of a group of coal miners who would dig by day and play rock and roll by night. The story goes that a London, England club owner rushed to Wales and descended at 18,000 feet beneath the surface to sign the group ...quite a story

Welcome this week's episode of #TheSpaceinbetween, another rock 'n roll memory from #TomLocke 's new book, #MomentsinTime.
The time is 1968. Today's featured artist was born in British Guyana and moved to London in 1960. He formed a Jamaican / British rock/reggae quartet and had a massive hit in 1983 with #ElectricAvenue which made it to #2 on the UK and US pop charts.
He had another hit years before that back in 1968 with #BabyComeBack. The song reached #3 on the charts and was later recorded by Bonnie Raitt and UB40. He was nominated for a Grammy in 1988 for his anti-apartheid song, #GimmeHopeJo'anna .... An astute businessman who founded #IceRecords and built the #BlueWaveStudioComplex. He is of course the amazing #EddyGrant ...For What it's Worth

Well, welcome to this week's two-part episode of #ForWhatit'sWorthwithBlakeMelnick called #LongHairedCountryGirl . This episode is the next installment in our #PasttheJam music series, where our current artist in residence #BlairPackham a will join me to help pass the jam to an amazing new artist.
Rooted in the heart of the Kootenay Rockies. She draws her inspiration from the wild and rugged landscape that she calls home from the river she wades in and from the small town working life that. With our use of traditional instruments, kinetic foot percussion, old time lyrics. She puts herself into the category of roots and blues with just a hint of old time and bluegrass.
She has recently incorporated playing electric lap steel into her live shows where she fuses her love of blues and bluegrass together into a rock and roll one woman. With the help of an upgraded boss loop station and Octavia pedal, and a pair of hand crafted butter box. Cahones set up as a kick and snare drum.
She can recreate a sound that could only be accomplished before with a three-piece band using distorted slide, guitar and foot drums to cover bands like led Zepplin, Joe Walls, CCR, Muddy Waters, and Jimmy Hendrix. She has taken her solo shows to a whole new. She has played alongside some of the best musicians in the east and west Kootenays, and over the years has developed a multi instrument, musical diversity, which she brings to every musical project and performance.
She has developed a style that is truly unique and a reflection of who she is. From delicate stories of love and loss, to tongue and cheek murder ballads, to rock and roll covers that get the crowds out of their chairs dancing. She writes from the heart, resulting in a degree of authenticity, seldom seen in a live performer. Check it out ... For what it's worth

For those of you that are new to the show and unfamiliar with this series, here's the skinny. What began as an idea, born from our frustration, with the inability to play recorded music on for what it's worth because of the cost and restrictive nature of copyright laws particularly as they relate to podcasts as morphed into something completely different, a creative, new approach for supporting artists, their music and their stories. One which breaks free from traditional industry norms and the typical directed listener experience. It's an approach, which places, the artist and their music at the center, and allows listeners to hear music they might not otherwise be exposed to and develop a deeper connection with the artists and their stories.
For the past month or so, we've been playing songs written by our current artist in residence, Canadian music icon #BlairPackham for all the intros and outros to the show. Before our next episode of #PasstheJam where Blair will join me as a co-host to pass the jam to an exciting new artist, we're going to have a bit of a musical interlude where I get to be a DJ and play all of Blair's tracks in their entirety.

Well welcome to this week's episode of #ForWhatitsWorthwithBlakeMelnick, called #LivingtheImpossibleDream part 2, in our music series called #PasstheJam, with my guest Canadian music icon @Blair Packham
In part 1, we discussed Blair's early career as a singer / songwriter, the founding of his band, #TheJitters. Those heady days in the late 1980s, where they opened for Heart, the Kinks, The Byrds, and played large venues, both here in Canada and abroad.
We heard about his time in the studio and the various personalities he worked with over the years. Blair shared some great stories about his time as a radio show host with CFRB and Q107 and the guests he interviewed over those years. And in particular, his favourite interview, the soulful Solomon Burke. We concluded the episode with a discussion about Blair's passion for teaching songwriting.
In this episode we pick up from where we left off, and then focus on Blair's songs and his soon to be released new record called #SongFood. We will be joined by current artist in residence, @OliverMcQuaid who will take a deep dive into the art of songwriting with Blair, and help me to #PasstheJam. I hope you enjoy this episode

Music is a reflection of both our history as well as our social consciousness. It helps us make sense of the world and allows us to make personal connections with it. Perhaps more than any other art form, music is evocative; it triggers vivid memories of childhood, falling in love, loss and sadness - it forces us to look at ourselves to remember who we were and who we are.
Music always makes me feel connected in a Jungian sense. It makes me realize that the struggles I have are not mine alone, they are shared. Simply recognizing this makes me feel less alone and ultimately better.
I’m a big fan of the Blues. In the late 70-’s early 80’s I lost my connection with popular music - it just didn’t resonate., so as great bluesmen, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee said in one of their songs, I became a “white boy lost in the blues” I began to seek out roots music wherever I could find it. Fortunately Toronto in the early 80’s was a place where the great blues artists were readily accessible to me in a number of small venues. I had the chance to see and meet some of the greatest blues artists of our time - Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Albert Collins, Fenton Robinson, Son Seals and a great many others - before what I will call the blues renaissance which occurred the nineties, when popular artists, realizing the contribution these aging blues players had made to the world of music began to appearing as guests on their records, thereby raising awareness of the blues form and these great artists in the minds of a white listening audience.
So here’s the rub, while blues themes tend to focus on “Feeling Blue” about things which happen in one’s life - “The Thrill is Gone”, Baby Please Don’t Go, The sky is crying” etc. the blues are about acknowledging our pain our feelings of loss and sadness, and by doing so, we feel better.

We've just surpassed 2000 downloads of the show, not counting streams and this episode marks our 37th since the release of the podcast, back in June of 2020. During this time we have chronicled the impact of the COVID pandemic on the lives of Canadians and we've attempted to raise awareness around issues, which are foremost in the minds of people. we saw the show as an opportunity to engage with people from all walks of life; To hear their stories and their ideas for a changing world. The show can best be described as eclectic, covering a wide range of themes and topics from technology to innovation, politics, social enterprises, literature, music, and sport.
This was intentional, largely based on our belief that all knowledge is connected and that good ideas from one field of endeavour can be transferred and adapted to advanced knowledge In another. We realized we were in a unique position to affect change and to rethink our world. I am really excited about this week’s, 2 part episode called #CampfireJesus. It is the first in person interview we’ve conducted since the show began (albeit at opposite ends of an 8 foot long banquet table); the second episode of our #PasstheJam music series, and the inaugural “passing of the jam” from our current artist in residence, @BenHunter to an exciting new artist, OliverMcQuaid. Oliver is originally from Squamish B.C, but has lived in Mexico for large periods of time. He now lives in Kimberley BC with his family. He is a local legend in the East Kooteney’s and has played at various events and festivals throughout the Province over the years, as a duo with his cousin Kurt, as a solo act, and most recently with his band, The Tumbleweeds. Heavily influenced by the music of John Prine, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, Chet Atkins, and Jimi Hendricks, he is a prolific songwriter drawing inspiration from "the land" and the writings of existentialist philosopher, Fredrick Nietzsche. He is a gifted entertainer, who effortlessly draws his audience into each and every performance - From soulful ballads to rock'n, foot stomping country blues, he keep folks on the edge of their seats (if not completely off their seats during his performances)
Part 1 of the interview, Oliver discusses his songs, musical influences, the impact of Friedrich Nietzsche; the importance of family, and his early days as an aspiring singer / songwriter
Part 2 of the interview we are joined by Ben Hunter, the current "holder of the jam" live from Los Angeles. Ben and Oliver do a deep dive into the art of songwriting; the music business, personal motivations, and future career aspirations, all with disarming openness, humour and honesty. Pass the Jam Music SeriesWhen the idea of Pass the Jam was born, we imagineda creative new approach for supporting artists, their music and their stories; one which breaks free from traditional Industry norms and the typical directed listening experience. An approach which placed the artist and their music "at the centre" and allowed listeners to hear music they might not otherwise be exposed to, while developing a deeper connection with the artists, their stories, and their music. At the same time we hoped that having artists directly involved in "Passing the Jam", would foster connections between the artists themselves, leading to opportunities for collaboration; new musical directions, friendships, and provide a great listening experience for our audience.
I think you will agree this episode is a testament to that vision.

As a result of the Pandemic parents, students, teachers, and employees, have been forced, out of necessity, to adapt very quickly to learning and working within technology supported virtual environments. This has posed significant challenges for all concerned. It is not simply a technology challenge, but also a design challenge. The traditional ways we think, work and learn are not always adaptable to online environments, nor do they leverage the considerable and distinct benefits of e-learning.
Virtual schools represent the changing face of education in the 21st century, but will they be allowed to realize their true potential?
Virtual schools offer the possibility of the global classroom, democratization of knowledge, student driven learning, robust, authentic curriculum that is constantly being improved upon by each successive group of learners and the knowledge they share with one another. Virtual learning, can remove geographical, socio-economic, cultural barriers as well as address student's unique learning challenges.
The question is, how can this potential be realized in the face of present education and political structures, which hearken back to the Industrial Age?

COVID 19 has had a significant impact upon all industry sectors; the world has changed and continues to do so; we will not be going back to the way things were, post COVID. If nothing else, the Pandemic has illustrated the importance of Knowledge and reliable knowledge flows from Government, health officials and business leaders in protecting the health and well-being of our citizens and in advancing the collective, global effort to produce and deliver a vaccine.
This reality has forced organizations of all kinds, to re-think their business and the sectors in which they operate. While this is especially true with small and medium sized businesses, it is also true for large, multinational corporations.
As all industry sectors are being forced to adapt to exponential change, largely as a result of advances in digital technologies, knowledge is fast becoming the new commodity and competitive differentiator in the Marketplace. The application of advanced analytics and algorithms allow these firms to capture knowledge about all of us - our habits, our lifestyle preferences, where we go on vacation, what we like to eat, our political bent. and then sell this knowledge to their customers.
The adoption and application of Knowledge Management strategies and practices are being used to support cultures of innovation in workplaces, resulting in increased value capital for organizations.

What we're seeing with technology overall is, the creation of a lot of productivity that is actually excluding people from the kind of wage growth and the middle-class growth that we saw before the invention and adoption of modern computing and robotics.
I don't think we're going to see a future with no jobs. I think we're going to see a future with a whole lot of low quality, low income jobs. And a few high high-income, high-quality jobs at the top. And if you don't believe me, just look up the economy right now. This is what's been going on for the last 20, 30 years. we've seen that the slow shrinking of the middle class, we've seen more low income and low quality jobs being created proportionately, , the share of jobs rather than our low income low-quality in Canada and in most OECD countries, is increasing

The Pandemic has had a particularly acute effect on the Entertainment Industry. Performing artists of all kinds have been unable to practice their craft and engage in their passion for live performance. In the case of musicians, the situation is not all bad. Musicians have had time to turn their attention to songwriting, recording and to improving their brand - The business end of things, as it were

As Canadians, we have a front row seat to the drama playing out south of the border which illustrates what can happen when the gap between the haves and have nots; between the rich and poor becomes too large.
The future of our economy is at best uncertain - with mounting job losses, businesses shuttering across the country; the changing nature of work and school; the shifting economic and political relationships between, and amongst nations; the mounting climate crisis.
These are big, complex challenges requiring us to engage in #socialinnovation; To consider bold ideas to protect the health and well being of our citizens and our nation as a whole.
One such idea worthy of serious consideration is the implementation of #BasicIncomeforCanada.

The recent U.S. elections caused much anxiety for citizens of the United States and for many democratic countries around the world. Four years under the presidency of #DonaldTrump, has changed perceptions of America and has shaken the very foundation of #LiberalDemocracy.

Calling all rock stars, instrumentalists and singer songwriters!
In this episode of the Space, called #passthejam, we discuss an idea, which would allow us to play new music on the show …a bit of a contest as it were. We are searching for new music for Season 3 of #Forwhatit’sworthwithblakemelnick and #thespaceinbetween.
As @CamBrown and I are both huge music fans, we have been continuously frustrated with current copyright laws, which prevent us from playing music on the show. Especially as our use of recorded music would only serve to promote the interest of artists and their music. The exponential growth of podcasts as an expressive broadcast medium has demonstrated the current copyright laws are woefully out of date and in need of reform.
However until the laws are changed, we have come up with a creative and solution which will allow us to introduce and promote new music and new artists to our audience on the show …. With September fast approaching, North American families are typically focused on preparing for the start of the school year. In normal times, this can be busy and stressful for parents, students and teachers. Under the shadow of the COVID 19 Pandemic it is something different entirely
We have seen a significant up tick in infection rates of COVID 19 across the country since July. This increase has largely been attributed to young people, feeling the need to be social after so many months of isolation. It would appear from contact tracing, the greatest risk for transmission is large gatherings indoors - Bars, restaurants, house parties etc.
As the weather begins to cool, and people start to spend less time outside, the risk of infection and transmission for all of us will increase - The science is quite clear. Knowing this, should we as society further exacerbate the risk of infection, transmission, and death, for the most vulnerable members of our society, by allowing our schools to open in September? What are the alternatives?

As the coronavirus pandemic shrinks life in major Canadian and American cities — limiting familiar pastimes and discouraging the use of buses and subways and other forms of mass transit — hundreds of thousands of us are flocking to one of the most basic forms of mobility: the bicycle.
In March, nationwide sales of bicycles, equipment and repair services nearly doubled compared with the same period last year, according to the N.P.D. Group, a market research company. Sales of commuter and fitness bikes in the same month increased 66 percent, leisure bikes jumped 121 percent, children’s bikes went up 59 percent and electric bikes rose 85 percent.By the end of April, many stores and distributors had sold out of low-end consumer bikes. Now, the United States is facing a severe bicycle shortage as global supply chains, disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak, scramble to meet the surge in demand. (New York Times)

We find ourselves in the Eye of the Hurricane. The mass anti-racist protests in the US and in countries around the world, following the death of George Floyd have been largely directed at policing, as a root cause of systemic racism, but will defunding the police, or making them more accountable really produce the outcome we are looking for? …. or do we need to look deeper?

Tom is the Chairman of Workplace Innovation Canada Network, Executive-in-Residence for Teaching and Learning Innovation, British Columbia Association of Institutes and Universities, Victoria B.C. Canada, Monash University Faculty of Arts, Melbourne VIC Australia. Tom also served as Associate Vice-President for Learning Resources and Innovation at the University of Waterloo.
