This week we're coming away with more questions than answers as we explore the well-known favourite, I Stand Amazed in the Presence. We'll be discussing the claim to the title 'King of Gospel Music', pondering some of the debate that has arisen over some of the lyrics, and reminding ourselves that the gospel is indeed both marvellous and wonderful. All that and more!

In this week's episode, we're talking about Fanny... Ridley Havergal! She's the writer of Take My Life and Let it Be, an encouraging song of devotion to God. In this episode, we learn a little about the life of this talented hymn writer, discuss just a few of the many Bible verses this song references, and we discover that having beautiful feet is actually in the Bible. All that and more.

We're tackling an important topic this week as we dig into the hymn, The Church's One Foundation. We'll be looking into the controversies surrounding the writing of this hymn (and its tune), questioning our attitude towards the church, and reminding ourselves just how much Christ loves his precious bride. We've covered quite a few hymns, so in our newest episode, we thought we'd dig into the history of a hymnbook. We'll be looking into the very special friendship of John Newton and William Cowper and how this led them to create one of the most influential hymnals in the English language: Olney Hymns. To this day, this hymnbook is still used and is something of a monument to their friendship.

In this, our fiftieth episode (I know, right??), we're bringing you a William Cowper classic we can't believe we haven't talked about yet: There is a Fountain Filled with Blood. There will, of course, be some blood in this episode, but there's also a whole ton of hope and encouragement, and we can't wait to dig into this hymn with you!

There's so much going on at Hymnpartial HQ this week that we're taking a break just to rest and regroup. However, with football season reaching a fever pitch (see what we did there) we'd like to share with you an old classic and well-known football anthem, Abide with Me.

Bizarrely, this is a song that has been widely adopted by secular culture in the most unusual ways and for some very odd reasons (and sometimes no reason at all). Why is a song about longing for God to walk with us through death so often sung at unbelievers' funerals? What has it got to do with football? And why did it cause such a stir in relation to the Indian Army in 2020?

This week, we're talking about a hymn that was more recently revived by the David Crowder band, but actually goes way, way back. Our hymn for the week is All Creatures of Our God and King, but we'll also be taking a look into the tumultuous, yet fascinating life and beliefs of its author, Saint Francis of Assisi.

In celebration of Hymnpartial's first birthday, we thought we'd take a look back at a few of the lessons we've learned and ways we've been convicted through the last 52 weeks of podcasting. We talk about how we're constantly amazed by the lives of the human beings behind the hymns, how we're convicted by how often we don't pay attention to what we're singing, and we reflect on how the hard work of podcasting is absolutely worth it.

Also, listen to the very end to find out the answer to a question you've never asked about the podcast. And tell us: what's something you've learned (big or small) from listening to Hymnpartial?

We decided that our next two episodes would be on a joyful theme, only to discover that by pure coincidence, both the songs are hymns which are frequently mistaken for Christmas songs.

In this week's episode, we talk about big fluffy dogs, Romantic era poetry, and pre-WW1 history - although Cara is trying her hardest not to go off down a series of interesting literary and historical rabbit trails. We also talk about the hymn Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee and the Beethoven symphony it was taken from. All that and more!

What are you reading in your Bible at the moment? This week we'd like to remind you of the excellent hymn, How Firm A Foundation. This is no stuffy classic, it's a wonderful song that talks about the beautiful gift the Bible is, often lifting lyrics straight from Scripture itself.

In a world that tries to undermine the Word of God, this is the perfect hymn to remind us to trust the word of the God who cannot lie.

We're aware that we have quite a few more recent additions to the Hymnpartial family, so we thought it would be fun to introduce (or re-introduce) ourselves.

The funny thing about podcasts is that you can feel like you know someone very well without really knowing much about them, so this week, we decided we'd give you a wee peek behind the mic.

In this episode, we talk about how Monet accidentally joined an orchestra, why Cara thinks 'Celtic music' is too broad a term to mean much, and, of course, what possessed us to think we would start a podcast.

  • Luke 1: 46-55; 1:68-79; 2:29-32

  • John 1:1-18 (or at least part of it)

  • Philippians 2:6-11

  • Colossians 1:15-20

  • 1 Timothy 3:16

  • The opening verses of Hebrews 1

In this episode we do a quick recap of the life of Isaac Watts, take a moment to bask in the wonder of our freedom in Christ, and speculate on whether our hymn-writer was referencing Milton or Paul (as if we'd know!).

The important thing to remember as we face each of our struggles, is that God is still on his throne, he's sovereign and he's in control. So when you find yourself, weary, worn, stressed, or just tempted to gloominess, come back to this song and the Psalm it's based on, and remember who's really running the show.

This week we bring you a song that, coincidentally, is one of the finalists or our Battle of the Carols. Even after Monet reveals the complex story of O Come, All Ye Faithful, we still have no idea where it came from or who wrote it, but Cara decides she'll say it's hers since just about everybody else has claimed it as their own. Would you dare argue with the king of Portugal?

We also strip back all that rupapumpumming and uncover the story behind the well-known song, Little Drummer Boy. It's beautiful for sure, but is the heart behind it enough to make it a song we should be singing in church?

We're back again with our second Christmas episode. This time, we're talking about ye olde classic, Hark the Herald Angels Sing. We've got some serious saltiness about people tweaking other people's lyrics, an accidental Christmas song that's not actually about Christmas, and another one of those popular songs that maybe isn't as deep and spiritual as it sounds (but we still like it). We are very much excited here at Hymnpartial - Christmas is coming and we are so ready for it (if you can't tell)! In this week's episode, we're talking about how the story behind Silent Night could have been written by Hallmark, whether Away in a Manger is just a little bit creepy, and why on earth anyone is still singing Little Donkey. Since our very first episode on Amazing Grace has continued to be our most popular, we thought that it might be fun to do an entire episode on the life of its author, John Newton. With all the social justice stuff and with Black Lives Matter becoming such a household name this year, the conversation felt all the more pertinent.

You see, John Newton was a slave trader, and contrary to the popular narrative, he continued in that trade even after his dramatic conversion. In this episode, we talk about his experiences on both sides of slavery, how we all struggle with sanctification, and whether John Newton's activities in earlier life mean we should be slower to sing his songs.

Don't worry, we're not abandoning our reformed roots and claiming to be having audible chats with Jesus, we're just looking at a rather wonderful hymn, I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say.

This week, we're introduced to Horatius Bonar, Monet takes us on a whistle-stop tour of the 1843 schism in the Church of Scotland, and we find ourselves encouraged by the reminder of the wonderful comfort of the presence of God with us.

Whip out your passports, we're off on a journey around the world this week as we trace the development of the song we now know as How Great Thou Art. From the sea storms of Sweden to the sweeping beauty of the Carpathian mountains, to the post-war refugee camps of Sussex, this popular hymn journeyed across four languages over fifty years before it found itself in the form we know today.

Do you know any of the extra verses or different translations of this song? Have you ever come across 'the Martin Luther of Russia'? And did you know this song was originally Swedish?

After a brief, but refreshing break, we're back this week with a song all about the gloriousness of God. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty is one of the best known hymns in our hymn books, but did you know it was originally German?

Brace yourself, this episode has us puzzling over accusations of 'muscular Christianity' (yeah, we're not sure either), asking whether it's possible to compete with J. S. Bach's musical skills (probably not), and digging up history as we find out what this song has to do with fossils of all things (it's ironic really). Join us as we explore this hymn of praise!

If you've got those post-weekend blues, we're here to tell you: it doesn't get any better than this! Today, we have for you the simple classic, Jesus Paid It All.

This hymn has a wonderful combination of rich lyrics and a pretty tune, and has a satisfying providence about its beginnings. We find ourselves talking about why some people have reservations about 'choruses', the weird phenomenon that is eggcorns, and, of course, the abundant grace of God. There's so much we're still learning and figuring out, come learn along with us.

Have you had any songs stuck in your head recently? We've both had a particular hymn we just haven't been able to shake. Last time we were together, the minute one stopped thinking about it, the other started singing it and it was back to square one! But do you know what we do when that happens?

We make an episode about it.

His Mercy is More may be a (very) recent hymn, but it's packed with good theology and edifying lyrics, all set to a memorable tune. If there's anything you want buzzing around your head all week, it's the truth that Christ's mercies are greater than our sins.

What do you think about when you hear the word 'mission'? And what's is got to do with those of us who are just 'regular' Christians?

If you need a little help getting going with your week this week, then boy do we have an episode for you! This week, we're talking about the hymn, Facing a Task Unfinished. For many, it's an unfamiliar hymn, for some it was brought to their attention recently by the Getties, but whether you know it or not, it's one to add to your hymnbook.

As you know, we Hymnpartial ladies really love Scripture, so we're delighted to spend this week talking about How Firm a Foundation.

This is no stuffy classic, it's a wonderful song that talks about the beautiful gift the Bible is, often lifting lyrics straight from Scripture itself. In a world that tries to undermine the Word of God, this is the perfect hymn to remind us to take our Saviour at his word and trust what he has said.

Through sickness, through tragedy, and through the bitterness of lament, the Christian can always find strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. Join us as we talk about this beautiful hymn, Great is Thy Faithfulness, and how the Christian's great hope can confuse and convict the world around them.

Boy, do we have a cracker for you this week! As we discuss the age-old classic, Rock of Ages, we discover that Toplady was not the friendliest of fellas (although he does have an IMDB page all of his own), and despite his bitter feud with the Wesleys, their theology aligned on the most unexpected subject.

This is one of those ones where you've got to hear to believe it!

This week, we talk about the modern classic, In Christ Alone and the apparent controversy that has sprung up around some of its most powerful lines. Should we really be singing about the wrath of God? What actually happened at the cross? And can writing a hymn really be as simple as grabbing a cup of coffee together?

We're back on the hymns this week with the somewhat controversial song, Nearer My God to Thee. In this episode, you'll find several sinking ships (literally), and a Cliffnotes introduction to Unitarianism as the ladies discuss this poetic hymn.

Is it ok to sing hymns potentially written by unbelievers if the lyrics are biblical? Is Nearer My God to Thee poetic or merely sentimental? And was there room on that board for Leonardo DiCaprio? What do you think?

This week, we're building on what we learned about the history of gospel music and looking to its cultural influence and impact. Are gospel songs really talking about biblical stories? How closely linked is this genre with civil rights movement? And how much of different non-church music styles is it ok to adopt in our corporate worship?
