Bizarrely, this is a song that has been widely adopted by secular culture in the most unusual ways and for some very odd reasons (and sometimes no reason at all). Since our very first episode on Amazing Grace has continued to be our most popular, we thought that it might be fun to do an entire episode on the life of its author, John Newton. With all the social justice stuff and with Black Lives Matter becoming such a household name this year, the conversation felt all the more pertinent.
You see, John Newton was a slave trader, and contrary to the popular narrative, he continued in that trade even after his dramatic conversion. In this episode, we talk about his experiences on both sides of slavery, how we all struggle with sanctification, and whether John Newton's activities in earlier life mean we should be slower to sing his songs.
