We are FOR Visalia.
Neighborhood Church, located in Visalia, CA, exists to inspire people wherever they are to live like Jesus wherever they go.
We all face trials and hardship, and the temptation to give up when life gets hard is all too real. But what if the challenges we encounter aren’t just obstacles to overcome but opportunities for our faith to grow stronger?
In Part 4 of Note To Self, Forrest Jenan explores the idea of perseverance and how it’s not merely about surviving tough times–it’s about learning how to thrive in them.
Could pain, uncertainty, or frustration you’re facing right now be a part of something bigger–working to reshape your faith in ways you can’t yet see?
Everywhere we turn, we’re encouraged to indulge and satisfy our every desire. There’s a different path to consider—one where self-control is not just an outdated virtue but a gateway to spiritual growth and connection.
In Part 3 of our Note To Self series, Brian Ross explores how our cravings and impulses might be holding us back from a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God.
Could it be that the very practices we tend to avoid—like fasting, silence, and limiting our media intake—are simple things God uses to lead us to the freedom we crave?
We live in a world that celebrates knowledge–science, reason, and human achievement–but what if we’re missing something deeper?
In the second part of Note To Self, we explore Peter’s letter, where he calls us to add knowledge to our faith. Not just any knowledge, but a king that goes beyond the physical world and opens our eyes to spiritual reality happening all around us.
How do we break free from the modern spell that makes us think this world is all there is and align our understanding with a deeper, divine reality?
It’s easy to lose focus on what truly matters. The same way we need reminders to run an errand or make that appointment, we need spiritual reminders to keep out hearts aligned with Jesus.
Peter’s letter to early followers of Jesus speaks directly to this challenge, reminding them–and us–that following Jesus requires intentional growth and daily reminders of who we are called to be.
What does it look like to build faith and cultivate the kind of goodness that reflects Jesus, even in a world that may not understand or accept it?
Pain is the last place we want to be but when we can push through by following His lead, pain can lead to freedom.
When Jesus launched his new Kingdom, he turned the world's understanding of greatness on its head—power was found in weakness, and leaders were called to serve, not dominate. So why, today, do so many Christians get caught up in the pursuit of political influence as though it holds the key to saving our nation?
In this message, Forrest Jenan explores how Jesus transcends our current political landscape and invites us to embody a different kind of politics—one rooted in love and focused on the transformation of hearts, not just systems.
What does the love of Jesus require of us in today's polarized world?
In a world that seems more divided than ever, how do we bridge the gaps that politics create?
In this message, we’ll wrestle with how our faith calls us to move beyond the blame game and instead become a force for unity in a fractured world. Is it possible to disagree politically and still love unconditionally? Can we truly get along despite our deep differences?
Let’s explore the posture Jesus calls us to adopt in the face of division.
Is there such a thing as a Christian political party?
As we explore the intersections of Jesus’ teachings with modern political ideologies, we’ll discover that the values of the Kingdom of God often challenge the partisan lines we draw.
Are we willing to submit our political leanings to the lordship of Jesus?
Was the United States founded as a Christian nation? Can any nation be a Christian nation?
These questions spark debate and division, especially now with the rise of Christian Nationalism in America. We’re often caught in a tug-of-war between two perspectives.
How do the teachings of Jesus challenge our understanding of political power and engagement? And how to we avoid the pitfalls of division and idolatry?
We all need help. You’re not alone. But are we turning to the right sources? This week, we’re mashing up the Beatles’ classic “HELP!” with the powerful words of Psalm 121.
As we navigate life’s struggles, where do we find true, lasting support? And how do we seek it out? Are your habits leading you to true, lasting peace, or are they just temporary solutions?
What if the sense of belonging and peace you crave isn’t a place, but a presence? In this message, Jason Morones explores Psalm 84 and John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and uncovers the deeper meaning of home. How can these timeless songs guide us toward finding true joy and security in God’s presence?
What are you searching for? U2's “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” is more than just a song; it speaks to humanity’s restless search for meaning and fulfillment.
In Part 2 of Sounds of Summer, we’ll explore that search for meaning and look at the enduring hope found in Psalm 23.
The search for true peace and fulfillment is timeless. Do you ever find yourself searching for the same in your own life?
In Part 1 of the Sounds of Summer, we explore Psalm 4 and see how the themes of joy and security are also found in Led Zeppelin's classic rock anthem "Stairway to Heaven."
How does Psalm 4 guide us toward a life filled with genuine purpose and meaning?
As we close out our series on Paul's letter to the Philippians, Forrest and Jordan address some questions you asked during the series. Their conversation covers themes that come up in Philippians like salvation, prayer, heaven, and being content.
What if the key to transforming your life lies not in changing your circumstances, but in changing your thoughts? Changing your mindset and aligning your thoughts with the teaching of Jesus has the power to change everything.
Have you ever felt like giving up when the race of life gets tough? In Philippians, Paul uses the metaphor of an Olympic race to encourage us to press on and win the ultimate prize. How can we keep striving, even when obstacles seem too much to overcome?
Ready to revolutionize your relationships and daily life? This week, we’re uncovering a radical mindset that flips the world's definition of success on its head. When we embrace the selfless way of Jesus, it can completely transform our corner of the world.
As we dive into Paul's letter to the Philippians, his challenge was to “conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” How would this challenge have landed with his first readers?
How do you live as a citizen of God's Kingdom? And what does it mean to pledge allegiance to King Jesus?
In a world filled with religious noise, how can we truly live as authentic citizens of God's Kingdom? Jesus proclaimed that embracing the Kingdom life is the path to ultimate fulfillment, but sometimes religion itself can seem to stand in the way. How do we navigate the complexities of faith and cut through the clutter to experience the abundant life Jesus promised?
Our meals matter. Jesus used meals and dinner parties to teach profound lessons about community and the Kingdom of God. How can something as simple as sharing a meal redefine your relationships and perspective on life?
Imagine encountering Jesus as he speaks passionately about the Kingdom of God. It’s not about earthly kings and geo-political borders; it's about a profound shift in how we live and connect with the divine.
The core of Jesus' teachings was the Kingdom. How does it challenge our understanding of power, responsibility, and our place in the world?
Conflict is uncomfortable, and avoiding it can feel like the safer route—but it's also a surefire way to ruin a relationship. Why is avoiding conflict so damaging and how can facing it head-on lead to stronger, healthier connections with the people you care about?
If you've ever felt trapped in a spiral of negativity, constantly replaying moments of conflict or obsessing over what went wrong, you're not alone. Focusing on the negative can destroy even the strongest bonds. Are you dwelling on what's wrong, or are you letting love lead you?
We all have an innate desire to win, but at what price to our connections with those we value most? Striving to always get your way can turn even the strongest relationships into battlegrounds. Is insisting on having it your way enriching your relationships or eroding them?
Ever feel like your words are lost in translation, even with those closest to you? The fastest way to kill a relationship is through bad communication. What if the secret to deepening your relationships is changing the way you speak and listen?
Have you ever considered how one moment can change everything? The resurrection of Jesus Christ marks the most significant tipping point in human history, transforming not just the past but our lives today. What if the story of the resurrection could be the tipping point in your own life, offering a new perspective on hope, forgiveness, and love?
Amidst the jubilant crowd and waving palm branches, Jesus of Nazareth humbly enters Jerusalem on a donkey. This profound moment is an invitation to align our lives with the recognition of Jesus as King.
Will we worship King Jesus? Or will creation itself sing louder?
Feeling like you're constantly chasing others' approval? In this talk, Jordan Brokaw explores our addiction to external validation and what it takes to move beyond the desire to please everyone, embrace our true selves, and find freedom in being loved by God.
Are you ready to break free from the approval trap and discover your true identity?
Do you ever find yourself getting in the way of your own success and happiness? In this message, we’re diving into the messiness of life and the universal truth that we all face challenges, big and small. How can embracing our imperfections and seeking authenticity in our struggles help us find a deeper connection with Jesus and each other?
Ever felt the inner battle between wanting more and being content with what you have? In each of us are twin terrors lurking beneath our desires: Greed & Envy. But Jesus guides us towards a life marked by contentment and generosity. Are you ready to unleash the power of generosity to combat your inner monsters and live a life with nothing to lose?
Feeling gripped by your own "precious" desires and possessions? We all have a little "Gollum" within because what you love the most shapes you. How will you choose what you treasure most?
Ever feel like you’re constantly chasing more, never quite satisfied with what you have? There’s a secret to contentment and the perspective Jesus offers which challenges us to see the world in a whole new light.
While many belief systems promote peace and unity, there’s no denial that religious violence has left a bloody stain on human history. What do we make of these atrocities, and how much of them have religion to blame?.
There is a distinction between believing in Jesus and genuinely following him. And following him may not make life easier, but it offers a path to a better life defined by human flourishing.
Will Jesus make my life better? And if so, how will he make my life better?
Christmas is a reminder that God’s love transcends our excuses, bridging the gap in everyday relationships and inspiring us to love one another without judgment. Embrace the true spirit of the season and discover the power of living life filled with love and grace for others.
The collective soundtrack of Christmas is filled with joy, peace, generosity, and goodwill to all humans everywhere. But what happens when the soundtrack of this season doesn't match our current circumstances?
What do we do when our current reality looks and feels very different, maybe even the polar opposite of the joy, peace, and goodwill towards all?
"Jesus is the reason for the season."
This phrase is often seen on Christmas cards, coffee cups, and festive decorations. But what does it really mean? Why does the Christmas story matter?
In our teaching series, “Reasons For the Season,” we explore why Jesus was born and how that still matters to us today.

Have you ever felt like facepalming after a bad decision? We’ve all been there. Whether you’re trying to avoid that next mistake or you want to level up in wisdom, we see you. Join us as we embark on a three-week journey to explore three keys to the Road Less Stoopid: Integrity, Obedience, and Humility. This week, we'll focus on the first key, Integrity, and learn how it guides us to make decisions based on what's right and true, even when it comes at a cost.
Have you ever been afraid of the dark? In a world filled with uncertainties, fears, and challenges, it's easy to feel lost and alone in the dark. But even when life gets complicated, Jesus—the Light of the World—is with us, guiding us, and ultimately leading us out of the darkness.
Life is a series of contrasts – joy and sorrow, hope and despair, light and dark. And yet, it’s so much easier for us to focus on the shadows rather than the light. We can feel consumed by the darkness of personal failures, relational tensions, and uncertainties about the future.
But from the very beginning of creation, there has been a light to illuminate our path. A light rooted in timeless, unconditional, divine love. From the opening words of Genesis, we hear God’s desire for both our world and our lives: “Let there be light”.
Feeling stuck? In a world overflowing with constant noise, relentless demands, and the ceaseless pursuit of 'more', there exists a timeless secret longing to be rediscovered: the power of contentment.
Have you ever felt stuck in the past? Whether it’s nostalgia or trauma, it’s tempting to focus on the rear-view mirror of life. But what if God wants to take your life in a new and beautiful direction?
As we continue our study of Israel in the Old Testament, we see that God always makes a way for life to move forward, even when we feel stuck.
In the story of Exodus, we learn about a loving God who rescues his people from slavery. And yet, throughout their journey, the Israelites constantly complained. When the road got tough, they wanted to return to Egypt—to the bondage of slavery!
Getting unstuck can be uncomfortable. Jesus wants to lead us into something new, but we often prefer the safety of our comfort zone. Moving our lives forward requires a bit of bravery, some resilience, and a whole lot of trust in God’s faithfulness.
Jesus is the center of our faith and getting this right is critical. But over time, we’ve come to find the ideas about Jesus we’ve inherited or learned get in the way of effectively sharing our faith with others.
In this series, Jesus For Everyone, we’ll explore who Jesus, the context of his time and culture, what he taught, why he died, and more. You’ll be invited to embrace a version of Jesus so compelling, so defensible, and so irresistible, our lives, our city, and our church will never be the same.

When it comes to our church community, sometimes you might wonder: why do we do the things we do? Rather than going through the motions of empty religious rituals, we want you to understand the "why" behind everything we do.

Technology has made us more distracted, anxious, and exhausted than ever before, but Jesus invites us to experience rest and renewal through the countercultural rhythm of Sabbath.
Thanks to technology, we're drowning in information, overwhelmed with knowledge, yet starving for wisdom. How can followers of Jesus make wise choices in an age of information overload?
In a world where technology advances at an unprecedented pace, we find ourselves increasingly immersed in an artificial landscape. But amidst the incredible opportunities that technology presents, how can we maintain our authenticity as individuals and followers of Jesus?

Research shows that people complain approximately once per minute during a typical conversation. Why is it we complain so much? What would a conversation look like that was absent of complaining?
Do you sometimes wonder how anyone could believe Christ died for our sins, was buried, rose from the dead, and was seen? It was enough then. Maybe it’s still enough today.
God’s people have always been dreamers. And dreams are often God’s catalyst to propel us into his vision for our identity and calling. But when those dreams finally come to pass, they are usually different, harder, and longer … but also better.
It’s one thing to discover your identity and calling; it’s a whole other thing to actually grow and mature into the somebody who is like Jesus, and in doing so, your real, true self.
We often think of work as a means to an end, to get what we need to do what we want. Our work environment tends to be overlooked when we think of true ministry. But what if we could discover ways to have our inner calling as Jesus followers move it’s way outward and into our vocation?
You can’t get very far down the path of transformation until you discover your identity and calling, but this journey of self-discovery takes us straight into the maw of the beast: our sin. And even more: what some call our “shadow side.” But until we expose our blind spots to the light, we will never experience the life that Jesus has for all his followers.
For most of us, our identity is rooted in earth – what we do, what we have, what other people think of us, etc. But for followers of Jesus our identity is rooted in who we are becoming in Christ.
An overview of the journey all followers of Jesus are invited to go on. In ways that few people recognize, the journey into self-awareness is also the road to spiritual formation. As we become more like Jesus, we become more like our real, true self. It takes courage to go on this journey, but it’s worth every harrowing, beautiful step.
We are all a bunch of works in progress. None of us have it all together. But when we circle up and begin to share life with each other, we can learn from each other and keep each other from falling or being overwhelmed.
Have you considered what legacy you are leaving for the next generation? Will you be leaving something worth leaving behind? If you want generosity and compassion in your kids, it's got to be in you.
Think about the people who have made a difference in your life. At some point, somebody came along and their investment in your life helped you win. Don't you want to do that for the next generation?
This generation is the first that doesn’t need adults for information. But they do need adults for interpretation. What can we do to help the next generation to see the world in a way that sets them up for success?
The Greatest Generation. Baby Boomers. Generation X. Millennials. Generation Z. Each generation is distinct from those that came before and those that come after. They have different priorities and different experiences. They see the world differently. It’s easy for the generations to live in conflict and competition. But what is our responsibility to the generations that come after us?
A study shows that 68% of Christians believe "God helps those who help themselves" to be true. Some even attribute the idea to Jesus. Not only did Jesus never say this but it runs contrary to everything Jesus represents and to what he has to say about God.
If you want to grow spiritually, commitment isn't enough. You must be connected. That's what groups are all about.
Many people read the Old Testament only to be shocked by the violence they see, even some, apparently, sanctioned by God. In Part 4 of I Can't Believe In A God Who...., Joshua Ryan Butler, author of "The Skeletons in God's Closet," offers answers to objections people have about violence in the first half of the Bible.
Jesus came to bring comfort, hope, protection and joy to the world. But not everyone sees Him like that. If you’re one of those people, you're in good company. What characters from the Christmas story do you identify with the most? Because there's a little bit of each of them in us all.
For many, the Christmas season is complicated. It's a reminder of broken relationships, unmet expectations, and missed loved ones. But no matter your circumstances, Christmas can also be a reminder of the light that overcomes the darkness.
It’s so easy to allow our fear of the unknown to paralyze us. Let’s face it ... at times, it can feel like the future doesn’t look very bright. How often do we fill the unknown with terrible monsters of our own imagination instead of trusting in the One who dwells in the areas we fear the most?
We all have conflict in our lives. In Part 2 of The Struggle Is Real, Stephanie Bartsch recounts a story of conflict from the Bible, lays out the formula for every conflict and gives a challenge to embrace the only solution.
Hospitality is good faith in action. Author and researcher David Kinnaman challenges and inspires Jesus-followers to show the kind of hospitality that is a truly countercultural experience.
Serving others is the definitive attribute of what it means to be a student learning the ways of Jesus. When you give yourself away to others, it's one of the main ways God grows your faith.
If you want to grow spiritually, being connected in a group is vital to your success. You must be connected. That's what groups are all about.
The first step of a simple process of growing in a transforming relationship with Jesus is trust. But what is trust?
In Part 4 of Summer Mixtape, Forrest Jenan looks at uncertainty, not as a lack of belief, but as a chance to deepen our trust in Jesus.
The Bible. Used correctly, this book becomes our portal to Jesus. Used wrongly, it can be used to justify almost any evil. In Part 3 of Summer Mixtape, Forrest Jenan talks about Jesus as the ultimate word of God, and what implications this has for how we read and interpret the Bible.
In light of recent news from Minneapolis, Baton Rouge, and Dallas involving police conduct, riots and protests, this message from Forrest Jenan serves as a reminder of the role the Church in our world.
We each have a unique view of freedom. And we each choose what to do with it. What are you willing to do to leverage your freedom for others?
There are far worse things than lying to ourselves but what makes self-deception so dangerous is that it’s what clears the path for all other destructive choices we make.
Where did sin come from? What's at the root of it all? From a biblical perspective, it's when we (humanity) place ourselves in a position only God can occupy which keeps us from doing the one thing God wants us to do: love.
What is sin? We can’t understand sin without understanding shalom. At its core, sin is the vandalism of shalom. It is rebellion against the beautiful, harmonious, binary rhythm and ordering of creation, which was meant to result in the flourishing of our relationship with God, others, and creation itself.
Generosity requires a plan. But how do you make a plan? In this message, Forrest Jenan provides simple gauges to help you decide where and how much to give.
We all worry about money. What if we don't have enough? What if we lose what we have? This simple shift in perspective can free you from financial worries.
When it comes to elevating the value, dignity and worth of women, the Church has largely taken its cues from culture rather than being a corrective force within culture.
Everyone gives something somewhere. But there’s a difference between random acts of giving and true generosity. The good news is, it’s possible to learn how to be generous.
We don't believe Jesus rose from the dead just because the Bible tells us so. It's way better than that. We believe Jesus rose from the dead because real people like Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, James & Paul wrote down their experiences and shared them with others.
The resurrection of Jesus is unbelievably believable.
Spiritual Conflict is a really big idea that’s wrapped up in mountains of questions. The basic idea is that there is an unseen realm populated by cosmic beings who have aligned themselves with either God or Satan. At stake is nothing less than all of creation.
In an effort to make this big topic accessible and relevant, Forrest Jenan boils Spiritual Conflict down to this: Satan Attacks, God Empowers, and Our Choices Matter.
Heaven is often talked about as if it were a dream or someplace that only exists in fairytales. We want to believe heaven is real, but with so many differing opinions and contradictory information, it’s hard to know what to believe.
If that weren't enough, everywhere you look, a new movie or book comes out that tells the story of someone who died, went to heaven, and came back. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a straight-forward examination of what the Bible has to say about heaven and how heaven relates to the life of Jesus?
Forrest Jenan and Bryan Muirhead share thoughts about how hell has implications for how followers of Jesus live right now.
How can a loving God send people to hell? Many of us fear hell is a skeleton hiding in God's closet. Hell is a hot topic for the Christian faith that has a way of igniting fierce debate far and wide. Hard questions leave many wondering whether God is really good and can truly be trusted.
In this talk, Joshua Ryan Butler thoughtfully confronts our popular caricatures of hell and reveals that hell is consistent with, rather than contradictory to, the goodness of God.
In this special Digging Deeper Live, Joshua Ryan Butler talks about some often misinterpreted Bible verses relating to hell and answers questions from the audience.
Forrest Jenan and Dale Best talk about how a healthy awareness of the unseen can lead a followers of Jesus to display God's love to the world.
Back in the 1800's, medical discoveries about the unseen world of germs and micro-organisms effectively changed the way people lived. The Bible talks about an unseen world as well ... a world where God exists and where angels, demons, Satan, heaven and hell all seem to interact. It's a space or reality all around us that goes unseen but impacts everything we see and how we live.
Neighborhood Church is a Jesus church. We believe that the message of Jesus is for everyone. And if the message of the Church is for everyone then our church culture shouldn’t exclude anyone!
That's why we spend so much energy and resources as a church to create a culture and environment where adults, students, and children are inspired and challenged to allow the message of Jesus to invade their everyday lives.
2016 marks the 10th anniversary of our partnership with Houston School and its surrounding neighborhood. We could look back and think, Wow, we’re awesome! We did so many good things! Or we could try to do something amazing stretch ourselves further than we’ve ever gone in our quest of learning to love and like Jesus.
We all have mistakes in our pasts—financial, professional, academic, relational. Unfortunately, we tend to learn from our mistakes in the areas that matter least and repeat our mistakes in the areas that matter most. Sometimes that’s because we avoid owing our part of a mistake. It’s easier to blame others.
But once you’ve taken ownership of your part of a mistake, what do you do with the part owned by others? How do you get past the stuff other people have done to turn your life upside down?
We learn from our mistakes in the areas that matter least. We repeat our mistakes in the areas that matter most. Too often, we look at our pasts and our decisions don’t even make sense to us. We end up asking, “What was I thinking?” How do we avoid getting stuck in cycles of repeated mistakes that take our lives down the wrong path?
One reason history repeats itself is that we don’t own our part of our history. And the reason you don’t own it is there’s nothing to own—it wasn’t your fault! But if something important has come to an end and you are starting over, you must look back and own your part in order to move ahead. Your best bet for a successful future is to own your share of the past.
Many of us don’t like to follow directions. But there’s a price to pay for rushing into a situation without knowing what we’re doing. We get things wrong. And by the time we go back, undo everything we messed up, and then do it correctly, we’ve wasted more time than if we’d just followed the directions to begin with.
The consequences are usually mild when we ignore the directions for repairing a computer or assembling a child’s toy. But the price of rushing into a life situation can be steep. What if there were directions for the choices we make in life? What if we could avoid repeating past mistakes when we find ourselves starting over?
As much as we want war to end between nations, wouldn’t it be great to have peace in your own own heart? God desires a world without war and violence ... but your heart without war is also a defining characteristic of God’s plan.
It doesn't matter if you follow Jesus or not, you spend your time declaring the worth of something. Your kids. Your spouse. Your career. Your church. Your phone. Your sports team. Maybe even God.
If you spend your life declaring the worth of something, is what you’re declaring the worth of the most important thing?
O Come O Come Emmanuel, at its core, is a study of the Bible’s view of the Messiah. Who he was. What he represented. Why he came to earth. The song paints a picture of how the Old and New Testaments come together in telling about the birth and life of Jesus.
Jesus ends his Sermon on the Mount teaching in a somewhat surprising fashion. He stays away from inspiration and warm fuzzy feelings and gives us three metaphors for a person who follows Jesus: gates, fruit, and houses.
What if the point of prayer has very little to do with getting God to do stuff for us? What if we've gotten prayer all wrong?
By the time Jesus came on the scene, Jewish religious leaders had developed elaborate rules about making promises. Jesus addresses this in the Sermon on the Mount, saying that there are proper ways to use words in our relationships.
An idea that sets Jesus apart from all the other teachers and philosophers is this: love your enemies. There are those who teach pacifism but Jesus is the only one who takes it further and says love your enemies. What Jesus presents is not pacifism; it's something that's actually much more difficult.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus uses six relational situations to compare and contrast his ways to the ways of the Pharisees, the fundamental religious leaders of the day. One of those situations was anger.
Salt and light. Jesus was very deliberate when he used these two metaphors to describe the manner in which His followers love, bless and engage the world.
As we begin exploring the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, Forrest Jenan paints a picture of the historical, religious, and political landscape of the 1st Century. Jesus begins his teaching provocatively by announcing that the Kingdom of God is for everyone.
We believe Jesus to be humanity perfected; the full expression of God’s love and compassion. He is our “how to” when it comes to life. When we submit to him, our lives change radically.
This message is a look at just what this process of radical change is, what it means, and how we do it here at Neighborhood Church. We are a place that inspires people, teaches people, and equips people to live like Jesus.
Grace is God’s best idea. God’s magnum opus — his great work.
As we celebrate the life of our pastor and friend, Steve Harms, we talk about the value that was Steve's favorite. Steve knew and believed that the church is most appealing when the message of grace is most apparent.
The world is not the way it should be. We all know this. We can get lost in asking Why? but the authors of Scripture portray a God who is actively moving to make things whole and right. God is on a mission of restoration. And his church should be as well.
In this week's Digging Deeper, Dale Best and Forrest Jenan share more about our value of Inclusion.
If the message of the church is for everybody, then the culture of the church shouldn't exclude anybody.
We define authenticity as living in such a way that people see the real you. At Neighborhood Church, we believe it's Jesus that makes for a better and more real you. A better and more real you makes for a better world as you impact and love those in your sphere of influence.
Neighborhood Church has had some amazing success in it’s 67 years of ministry, but we can’t stay here. There are people and a world that need restoration but it is all too easy to think of church as just another thing Over the next few weeks, we’ll paint the picture of our future as a church and unpack the five core values that will get us there.
This past Sunday, Forrest Jenan talked about fear to end out Little Voices Inside Your Head series.
In this special edition Digging Deeper video/podcast, Forrest Jenan & Jay Kim explore a few more thoughts and ideas about fear.
Heights. Spiders. Death. Failure. The dark.
Our fears come in all shapes and sizes. But where do they come from? Is it wrong to be scared? And is it even possible to live a fear-free life?
This past Sunday, Jay Kim talked about disgust and how it's properties, when attached to people, can be destructive and harmful.
In this Digging Deeper video/podcast, Dale Best & Jay Kim explore a few more thoughts and ideas about disgust and the Eucharist.
Disgust is an interesting emotion. On one hand, it's something you use to prevent you from being poisoned or ingesting something unpleasant. But when you attach disgust to people or even yourself, it becomes harmful and even destructive.
The Scriptures tell us Jesus disregarded rules set up by religious leaders and crossed boundaries to show God's love to people that religion considered disgusting.
This past Sunday, Forrest Jenan talked about sadness and how it's absolutely necessary and useful as we navigate through this life.
In this Digging Deeper video/podcast, Dale Best & Forrest Jenan explore a few more thoughts and ideas about sadness and grief.
Sadness is an incredibly powerful emotion that can penetrate our very being. It can seem to be bottomless in its depth and feel altogether unbearable.
But while sadness is a dark and painful emotion, there's something about it that is absolutely necessary and useful as we navigate through this life.
This past Sunday, Forrest Jenan talked about anger, how it's an emotion reserved for God, and if acted upon, its ability to destroy relationships and ruin opportunities to display God's love to others.
In this Digging Deeper video/podcast, Dale Best & Forrest Jenan explore a few more thoughts and ideas about anger.
Anger is such an important topic because anger is this corrosive emotion that can run off with our mental and physical health, leaving the debris of broken relationships and missed opportunities in its wake.
This past weekend we kicked off a new series about emotions called Little Voices Inside Your Head. Forrest talked about joy and the important role it plays in the life of a follower of Jesus.
In this very first Digging Deeper video/podcast, Dale Best & Forrest Jenan explore a few more ideas about joy.
Every day, a choice is made that reflects that way we respond to life as it comes at us. The Scriptures speak to the importance of choosing joy. It doesn't mean we tune out the suffering and pain but joy is the emotion God wants us to embrace to partner with him in what wants to do in us and through us.
We live in a culture that is absolutely enamored with heroes. Superhero movies make the most money. Sports heroes are immortalized when they make the last second shot or hit the game-winning home run. Military heroes are memorialized for winning wars and saving lives.
Most of the time, we don't ever see ourselves as the hero but it is the role we were designed by God to play.
Jesus predicted that he would start a gathering, a movement ... what we call church. And that church would spread all over the earth and outlast the Roman Empire. It would change the world. His prediction must have sounded outlandish to even his closest followers. But here we are, two thousand years later, and the Roman Empire exists only in history books, while Jesus’ gathering is still going strong. The church is the hope of the world because the church is the vehicle by which God is bringing the solution to mankind’s greatest problems: sin, sorrow, and death.
The ability to believe is the most powerful force at mankind’s disposal. Everything that has been done, for good or bad, was done because someone believed it could be or should be done. Every problem that has been solved was solved because someone believed it could be or should be solved.
We constantly look for evidence to support what we believe is true. In the case of religious belief, that means if you believe deeply enough any religious system becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If that’s true, isn't it possible that Christianity is just an example of groupthink on a massive scale?
At some point in your faith journey, you will settle into a bargaining posture with God. “God, if you will... , I promise I'll... .” We all do it. That’s just part of religion — every religion. In fact, it’s so much a part of human nature that even some atheists and agnostics do it when they find themselves in desperate circumstances.
But is that really how God wants us to relate to him? The problem with a bargaining posture is we never keep up our end of the bargain, do we?
Guilt is powerful. Shame can be crippling. We all have things in our pasts that haunt us. We have sin. It only takes a word, a picture, or a name to bring it all back. We know we can do better from this point forward, but how are we supposed to fix the past? We can say we’re sorry. We can ask for forgiveness. But some of the things we've done hang over our lives like a cloud.
What can wash away our sins?
Practically speaking, rules are often the centerpiece of religious life. Many people think the Ten Commandments are rules that make a relationship with God possible. If you follow the rules, God will be happy. If you don’t, he won’t.
But what if a relationship with God doesn't depend on our obedience? When it comes to your relationship with God, what is the role of rules?
To only know God as a Father would be like only knowing daytime but never night — to see the sunrise, but never the sunset.
In this message, Forrest Jenan looks at how Scripture tells the story of a God who, at times, takes on motherly characteristics; feeding us, nourishing us, giving us what we need to grow and thrive, taking care of us in big and small ways, knitting us back together with love and grace when we’ve been broken.
The three largest faith traditions — Judaism, Islam, and Christianity —claim the same starting point: a man named Abraham. All three agree that sin made a mess of the world and God started his clean up operation with Abraham. God made a series of promises and Abraham’s response to those promises didn't just have implications for his personal starting point or the starting points of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. It had implications for your starting point as well.
Everything that exists had a starting point . . . including you. You may have started on purpose. You may have started by accident (from your parent’s perspective). You may even have started through the magic of medical science. Whatever the circumstances, you had a starting point and it began before you were aware of it.
Physical life is one of many starting points. Your formal education had a starting point. Your career had a starting point. Your romantic life had a starting point. Your experience as a parent had a starting point.
Faith has a starting point as well.
On the same Palm Sunday afternoon of Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, another parade was happening on the other side of the city. It was a parade for Pontius Pilate designed to promote the strength and power of the Roman Empire. When your compare and contrast these two events, we come to learn that Jesus came to Earth to show us that there's another way to do life.
We hear stories of religious fanatics who say and do things that look nothing like the life of Jesus. They give God credit and we're left scratching our heads at what's being done in the name of Christianity. The problem with religion and why it’s so destructive is so many people assume that religion and God are same. Religion was never meant be the end, but a means to the end.
We’ve all been picked on for something we had no control over. It’s dehumanizing. In all likelihood, you’ve also picked on others. It’s such a strange thing. It’s such a human thing. The easiest way to feel superior is to find a person or group we feel is inferior and power up. And we’ve probably all been guilty of that outwardly or inwardly.
One of the reasons Jesus came into the world was to change all that.
If there is a God, we all want to know what he’s like. We’re curious. Our tendency is to look in nature, outer space, or within ourselves to find clues about him. But that only provides us with an incomplete picture. Jesus made a radical claim. He said if you want to know about God, look no further than him. If you’ve seen the Son, you’ve seen the Father.
If you think about it, one of the craziest things we believe as Christians is that the God who made the world became one of us. Two thousand years ago, a man named John who hung out with Jesus wrestled with same question. And he was an eyewitness of everything Jesus said and did.
Why in the world would God do that?
The stigma attached to singleness isn't a new phenomenon. It has been around a long time. It turns out Jesus had important things to say about being single.
Are the Bible's teachings about women relevant? In this message, Steve Harms explains that Jesus' teachings about honoring women were extremely counter-cultural in the first century. They remain so today. So Christian men especially need to transform their thinking. And there are two simple steps to start with.
*Please note, this message is not appropriate for all ages. Parental guidance is suggested.
Culture convinces us - and sometimes we convince ourselves - that sex is only physical. But if that is true, why is the pain of sexual sin so deep? Because sex is not just physical. It was designed by God to be so much more. In this message, Forrest Jenan addresses common myths about sex outside of marriage and has two specific challenges going forward.
*Please note, this message is not appropriate for all ages. Parental guidance is suggested.
"When I meet the right person, everything will be all right." This way of thinking creates trouble in our dating lives and sets us up for trouble in marriage. In this message, Steve Harms challenges us to ask ourselves: "Am I the person the person I'm looking for is looking for?" And he previews God's list of behaviors that will lead to success in dating and marriage.
At some point in our attempts to get the most out of life, we lose control of our lives. We try to force one more thing in to our already busy lives and we reach a breaking point. Too much pressure causes an emotional breakdown. Too much debt causes a financial breakdown. Or maybe you're on the verge of a breakdown in your relationships.
What do you do when your worklife is so full you don't have time for the people who matter most?
We live in a culture that continually tells us to pursue a higher standard of living in order to improve our quality of life. But "standard of living" and "quality of life" aren't the same thing. One has to do with the stuff we accumulate. The other is about the peace we experience regardless of our circumstances.
What if your pursuit of a standard of living is undermining your quality of life?
We're all busy. Our schedules are packed with career, family, friends, church, and other responsibilities. Sometimes our days are so full that we don't enjoy anything because we're trying to do everything. Our relationship with God and with others benefits when we create breathing room in our schedules. But where do we start?
Our lives are busy and fast-paced. The lack of margin increases our stress and shortens our tempers. It can distract us from the most important things in our lives . . . and our relationships suffer. It can even affect our relationship with God because there's a connection between our willingness to create margin and our faith.
Life is better with breathing room.
When it comes to family, the only thing we all have in common is conflict. Family conflict is like no other because when you win an argument in your family, you don't really win anything. The conflict is never fully resolved.
What if there was a way to resolve family conflict by dealing with it at its source?
In his letter to the Ephesians, the apostle Paul drew from Jesus' use of power what is perhaps the most powerful relational teaching of all - an instruction that changes everything in family dynamics. It all comes down to asking a simple question: What can I do to help?
When the ideal is hard to attain, it's tempting to just lower the bar and redefine the ideal. This can be especially true when it comes to Jesus' teachings about family, which many of us have already fallen short of. In this message,Forrest Jenan explains why aiming for God's ideal is still worth it, even when our reality makes reaching it impossible.
