Sheila Wilson's guest Liz Dalton R.N.BSN has worked many years as a nurse. She was assaulted in 2015 and to this day is having depression and PTSD. The assault happened in the patient’s room. Security was called. The police came in to evaluate and take the information on the issue. Supervisors were there. Liz told everyone about the incident when she could finally speak.

What happened after? Were the supervisors and colleagues supportive? Did the police file a report? Did security file a report? Did the person that assaulted Liz get arrested or go to Jail? Violence in hospitals is shocking. What is being done about this?

Today Sheila Wilson's guest is Tracy Phillips R.N.BSN. Tracy has worked in hospitals for many years and worked in many departments. One of Tracy’s jobs was working on safety and quality for patients and employees. Healthcare workers get assaulted frequently and it was mentioned that a survey was done that showed 70-80% of nurses alone get assaulted by patients, patients' families, and even their friends.

Tracy spoke about the incident reports and how important they are to get data. Doing an incident report after being assaulted or threatened is a valuable tool. Having electronic charts make it easier to write incident reports. Having incident reports and documenting the threat and assault will only help to stop the violence.

Sheila Wilson guest Jone, a registered nurse who has been a psychiatric nurse for 44 years. They spoke about the mental health issues and the fact that so much more is happening in the world today. It is alleged corporations want all the beds filled all the time, profits over patients? However, staffing is an issue. Nurses are leaving in numbers today; they are burned out and frustrated. Being a psychiatric nurse is a specialty. Like many other fields in nursing the coronary care unit, intensive care unit, etc. you can’t learn it in a week or 2 months. Just learning how the patient acts with their behaviors takes time. Is the patient pacing? or not eating? Yelling, talking to himself/herself or to a person that is not there.

My guest today is Joanne, a nurse that was assaulted 7 years ago. We discussed her assault and how she was pushed by a woman that was having a panic attack.  From that push, she experienced severe pain, and using ice didn’t help. When she was seen by the Physician and had the correct treatment she was told that push or shove dislocated the hardware that was in her shoulder from a skiing accident years ago.  Causing severe pain. She would need further surgery.

We also discussed PTSD and going for therapy was extremely helpful. Being assaulted leaves a scar on most people, it works differently on everyone. Joanne a nurse that worked many jobs, many hours a week not only lost her ability to work but also lost all her income and had to use her savings.

In all honesty, you need to listen to this Nurse and her story. There are many Nurses that may have very similar stories, could be your daughter, sister, or wife that encounter these brutal assaults in a hospital setting

She spoke about different methods the perpetrators use; some are very nice others are not. We also spoke about how this affects us, the emotional turmoil, doubting ourselves, not believing this is happening to us. What am I doing wrong to have this happen?

Sometimes it takes months to believe you are in a bullied situation. She stated it took about 6 months to realize her situation and she left that environment.  There is legislation out there to help the employee, not in every State yet.! “Having a safe workplace benefits not only the employee but the public and the business”.

She had neck, shoulder, and back pain after her patient jumped on her back taking 7 people to get her off. We also discussed the lack of support from the Administration, the Manager, and the union she belongs too. The support from the staff was terrific and made her feel supported. Being assaulted, out of work, not feeling well, not being able to do what you normally are able to do is overwhelming.

Sheila Wilson’s guest today is a registered nurse Laurie Spahl R.N. that has been on strike for 301 days! Returning to work will be very exciting she stated, she will go back to a job she loves! Laurie spoke about how she and coworkers handled the strike, the walking, the weather, the hardships of being on strike.
The community was one of the biggest supporters and the nurses themselves stuck together supported each other when things got tough. When they were walking, people in cars would blow their horns, yell encouragement out the windows that gave them support.
They had donations from the community of food, diapers, formula, and a lot of other items. They felt going on strike was the right thing to do to protect their patients. They stayed together thru thick and thin and showed us all that if we do stick together for something so important it will work. For more information and contact https://bit.ly/3tA3VJ9

During the interview, we discussed the violence and the issues that can occur when someone is having a difficult time. We discussed the use of security guards and if there were hands-off or hands-on and also what the staff needed to do if they were assaulted.
We also spoke about “what would it be like to have something that the patient has been diagnosed with ” How would it feel, if it was happening to us? One example that was said, is a patient couldn’t get the voices in his head to stop talking all day and all night it was awful for him. For all the patients we need to have compassion, understanding, and to step back and ask what is s/he going through?

Sheila Wilson, the host of Stop Health Care Violence, recently interviewed a nurse the was brutally assaulted by a patient in a psychiatric locked unit. In this interview, she tells Sheila she was with a patient and the next thing she remembered was waking up from being unconscious. She heard a person yelling he is killing the nurse! The voice she heard was from a patient and she stated if it wasn’t for him, she probably would be Dead! He saved my life!
Her story is frightening, that this type of violence could happen in a hospital. The care received from the staff was also appalling!
Be prepared to listen and try to understand how this happens in a hospital setting. Violence from the patients towards the staff is unbelievable but true.

Sheila Wilson, President of her non-profit Stop Health Care Violence. Sheila is doing this series to bring more awareness of the injuries that many nurses have experienced in the Emergency Room. This series was created before the pandemic Coronavirus-19 happened. We realize that this pandemic is bringing much anxiety but this violence will still continue to the health care worker. It is still important that we still provide a platform for the many that have been injured throughout the years. Their stories need to be told and heard even in this time of a world pandemic.

Time is still moving forward and how you choose to be part of the solution that is up to you.

Sheila Wilson speaks to Virginia Weymouth Ferreira a Nurse that loved her profession as a Nurse, finally left ER Nursing because of the assaults she had encountered. It is very sad that you cannot be safe in a profession that you love.
