NAN SEYMOUR – “FIRST RESPONDERS FOR GREAT SALT LAKE”As poet-in-residence on Antelope Island, Nan led day-and-night vigils on behalf of the Great Salt Lake throughout the 2022 and 2023 Utah State legislative sessions. During her weeks on the receding lake shore, she assembled the praise poem called irreplaceable, a collective love letter containing over 400 individual voices from citizens.
The 2024 winter vigil featured twice daily demonstrations of love for the lake at the Utah State Capitol. Advocates of all ages walked with giant blue and white fabric waves in silence every morning and celebrated the lake’s many species with jubilant singing and dancing each evening. Over 1200 people participated in the 68 demonstrations during the session. Find out more @ www.saveourgreatsaltlake.org

LISA BICKMORE – “SOMETHNIG BORROWED”Lisa Bickmore is the author of three books of poems. The second, flicker (2016), won the 2014 Antivenom Prize (Elixir Press). She won the 2015 Ballymaloe International Poetry Prize for the poem ‘Eidolon,’ which appears in her third collection, Ephemerist (Red Mountain Press). She is the founder/publisher of the new independent nonprofit Lightscatter Press (lightscatterpress.org). In July 2022, she was named the Poet Laureate for the state of Utah, and in 2023 was awarded a fellowship from the Academy of American Poets for poets laureate

VIRGIL JOHNSON – “FORGIVING”Virgil Johnson is an educator and Native American activist who graduated from Southern Utah University. His work focuses on bringing Native American voices to the forefront of discussions about governance in the State of Utah. This is exemplified by his work to seek representation on the Utah Governor’s Cabinet. Virgil is also a marine veteran, and has served his community as a teacher, principal and coach. He served as the Chairman of the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation and as the Chairman for the Tribes of Utah.

David Lindes – Story: “How to Leave” – Original Song “Gold in the Ashes”David’s work has been featured on PRI’s The World and NPR. Born in Guatemala City, he immigrated to the United States at age 9 and spent his adolescence in the agricultural communities of California’s Central Coast. He later graduated in Latin American Studies from Brigham Young University. His book “Mi tierra—Homeland” is an intimate look at his journey to the US from Guatemala. In eight chapters, each accompanied by an original song and included in both Spanish and English, David addresses themes of migration, identity, justice, and belonging. At times poignant and at times defiant, it’s a vivid take on the Latino immigrant experience in today’s America. This story was part of a collaboration with Outside Magazine. David’s story and song will air later this year on their popular podcast, OUTSIDE @ https://www.outsideonline.com/podcast/
