How do we gain control when we feel like our life is out of control?

Pastor Adam Smallcombe kicked off our new year with a new series, Free Destined, on God’s sovereignty and human decision. Nothing happens without God’s permission, God’s foreknowledge, and God’s will. God is in control. So how does our free will work with His foreknowledge? While God is in control, He’s not controlling. God has given us control of some things. Anxiety and worry may creep in, when there are things beyond your control. Find peace in knowing God has predestined us for a purpose and His will not return void. Your situation may not change but God will allow the situation to change you. The biblical idea of predestination has less to do with a destination and more to do with destiny. Less to do with where you’ll end up but with who you’ll be when you get there. So pick a destination and watch what God will do in you on the way to the destination.

Do you believe in destiny?

Pastor Adam Smallcombe sets us up for 2023, and charges us as believers to step into the fullness of our destiny. So why does God choose the people He chooses? Better than asking the question, “WHY?” the real question is “WHAT FOR?” As the Church, we are God’s workmanship, which puts more emphasis on God in the equation of our destiny.
We were not created by good works but FOR good works. Good works speak to God’s sovereign plan. It’s up to us to put it to work.

What is the “thrill of HOPE?”

How do we process mental health as Christians? In this panel discussion, Pastor Adam Smallcombe, Pastor Keira Smallcombe, and Pastor Michelle Stewart unpack hope and tackle the tough conversation of mental health, depression, and suicide. The holiday season can be hard for some of us, and we see this affecting many people both in and out of the church. What does it mean to hold onto a Living HOPE in every season? In the Christmas carol, O Holy Night, we sing “a thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices…” As believers, we know that Jesus is our Hope, our Blessed Hope. We hold onto the knowledge that Jesus has overcome the world. And for that, we have the victory.

In 2023, we’re excited to launch the Hope Hangar as a part of our Vision. Check this out at http://vivechurch.org/vision for more information.

What is a soul worth? How do you appraise the worth of a soul? In this week’s message, Global Lead Pastor Adam Smallcombe unpacks a line from the Christmas Carol, O Holy Night, “… and the soul felt its worth.” Your soul care is important, it can be shaped and formed. How you handle your soul is up to you. While we were weak, Christ died for us. We look at value by comparing ourselves to others. What makes us valuable to God is that we are marked by our Maker. Only the One who gave it all can determine what it’s worth. When you have self-worth, it changes your outcome in life. When we understand our worth, and the price paid for saving us, it should change our perspective of ourselves. It is God who gives us worth, and we get to add value by putting our worth to work for a greater purpose

Is Christmas a pagan tradition?

This question might appear redundant, and the answer might be different than you think! Pastor Adam Smallcombe had a conversation with Pastor Keira Smallcombe and Pastor Chase Wiggins to discuss what is pagan versus what is holy about Christmas. Bigger than that, what is our role as believers in this world?

What would it look like for the saints to start seeing their spheres as platforms to redeem people to Jesus? How do we become redeeming agents in different secular sectors of life?

It’s simple: You simply BE… Be the example of Christ in every place. Bring the perspectives and positions of heaven into an ungodly world.

Are you walking around with a boxed gift? Or are you ready to start to unbox this gift of Jesus?

It’s officially the Christmas season, the best time of year! Pastor Keira Smallcombe kicked off December with the best gift — a message titled “Unboxing Jesus.” Isaiah 9:6-7 tells us that Jesus was given to us as a gift. As we unbox the gift of Jesus we discover He is a Wonderful Counselor, our Mighty God, an Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. Are you ready to unbox the gift of Jesus this Christmas?

Is Jesus really The Only Way?  In a world that celebrates unlimited choices, how do we embrace the power of limitation? In the final installment of our series, Only The Church, Pastor Ben Lee gives us the key to combat too many choices. Choose Jesus — He is The Only Way. As a people we often associate options with freedom. By hearing that there is Only One option, it can appear limiting. But when we fully understand the reality that Jesus is The Only Way, The Truth and The Life, we receive full freedom in Christ.

Barry Schwartz says, “… the paradox of choice suggests that having too many choices actually limits our freedom.” Hearing Jesus is the ONLY way, is the most encouraging thing for us as believers. In His grace, we receive the redemption of Jesus so that we can be in relationship with God. Because Jesus is The Only Way, God fulfills His redemptive plan through us, Only the Church, by bringing heaven to earth.

Have you ever thought, “If only I was [       ]… THEN I can be used by God.” How might we be disqualifying ourselves from what God, in His grace, has chosen us to become?

In the third installment of Only the Church, we continue to see that Onlyº has degrees to it. Pastor Adam Smallcombe digs deeper on the limiting perspective of “If Only…” The truth is, when we disqualify ourselves, we discredit God’s wisdom. If only the Church would realize the full power we have in Christ Jesus… If Only we understood we are chosen by God, not by merit but by His grace upon grace. We are qualified by God’s Grace,  and for that, we boast in the Lord.

The Bible uses different images to describe the nature of the Holy Spirit that indicate various dynamics — In the baptism of Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended “like a dove.” In Acts 2 the disciples encountered the Holy Spirit like “a mighty rushing wind” and descended upon them “as tongues of fire.” While these are mere descriptors attributed to the Holy Spirit, it’s important we understand that the Holy Spirit is a ‘WHO’, not a “WHAT.”In this first installment of the Temple series, Lead Pastor Adam Smallcombe begins to unpack the person of the Holy Spirit and how we as believers are carriers of the Holy Spirit. We are not only carriers of the Spirit but by baptism of the Holy Spirit, we are activated in the full power of God.

When it comes to our assignment here on earth, how many of us are operating like we are the last round pick or not picked at all? What are the qualifications that make somebody a candidate to be selected?

You need to stop second guessing you are selected because you are used to being rejected. Not only are you pre-selected or pre-chosen, you are called for a purpose. Until you realize how called you are, you won’t do small things with excellence. When you were selected onto team Christian - you didn’t sign up to have followers, you didn’t even sign up just to be a follower, you signed up but to MAKE followers. This is your win; to bear fruit - fruit that will last. The enemy doesn’t care how many days you live so long as you don’t live in the days you have. Pastor Michelle closes the series ‘No Time To Die’ with a commissioning ceremony - activating you in the call God has for you, in a message titled ‘Selected For Service’.

Do you treat Sundays as your “supercharger”? Do you expect to be filled back up to full on Sundays after being depleted during the week?

Sunday was not meant to be a supercharger when salvation already was. We have the power of the Holy Spirit to transform anything and everything. Continuing in the series ‘No Time To Die’, Pastor Vance Roush explores this and much more with a sermon titled ‘Dead But Not Done’. Anything that keeps you separate, stuck, locked up in fear is not from the spirit of God. The Holy Spirit wants to redeem language and culture. What makes a good evangelist? In the next installment of the series 'No Time To Die', Pastor Adam helps re-frame the way we approach evangelism with a sermon titled 'Peter Explained'. Your story is a series of small events rather than just a singular dramatic moment. It's often more effective to tell the story of what God has done in your life than a theological explanation of Him. Share your experience with the grace of God so that others can share in that experience as well.

Have you ever found yourself on a need to know basis?

It turns out there are some things that are nice to know and some things that you need to know. There is however one thing that every believer needs to know, what is your mission. This is known as the ‘Great Commission’, or in other words the main mission that is given to every disciple of Jesus. If you already know about the mission maybe what holds you back from fulfilling the mission is the fear of the unknown. When what you DO KNOW is greater than what you DON’T KNOW there is NO ROOM FOR FEAR. In the final installment of the series ‘Best Church Ever’, Palo Alto Campus Pastor Michelle Stewart brings a powerful message titled ‘Best Church Forever’. The next generation will be able to win and fight their battles because you have fought and won your battles. Jesus calls us to have a child-like faith to overcome battles and build an eternal church. Every generation has a part to play in the eternal church. Eternity is in the balance.

Pastor Adam Smallcombe challenges the view that the church should fit in a descriptive statement. The church should reflect the kingdom of God, which doesn’t fit a singular description, it cannot be boxed. The church is about action and its evidence is the outworking of lives being set free and transformed.  What kind of church are we? You tell us!

What is the Church to you?  What isn't the Church to you? Does your view of the Church cause you to be critical? Tune in as Pastor Adam dives into the scripture to unpack these questions with a timely message titled, ‘Not Your Average Church’. The church is not powerless and is the only eternal element on earth. Being planted in the church always follows being connected to Christ. You cannot treat what is sacred as common. Whatever you treat as common in your life will always give birth to criticism! Train your mind to take captive those thoughts that allows you see the church as common. The reason you think the church is common is because you see it as something you attend and not something that you are. Everything you think originates from what you believe in your heart. Examine your heart and seek repentance to restore your heart.

Are you a faith talker or a faith walker?

Sometimes you speak faith but you don’t have the practical application behind it. Pastor Adam Smallcombe continues the vision series, ‘Spare No Expense’, with a powerful message, ’Scrappy Faith’. When you resign yourself to fate instead of having a functional faith you are removing yourself from any responsibility. Faith is an invitation to partner with God. Faith employs the natural and the supernatural. God can do a lot with a little, but he cannot multiply nothing. When you have something that you consider nothing, you eliminate the supernatural element of God. Scrappy faith is not elegant, it requires your involvement. The only thing you cannot afford to do is disqualify yourself.

If you want to cling to good, it's in your grip on grace. Pastor Carly O’Rourke continues the series ‘All Ways All Good’ with an incredibly powerful message titled ‘Get a Grip on Good’.

How do we deal with confusing situations? Do we let our fear or faith takeover? The most confusing situations often possess the potential to produce the most clarity. When we fail to see God’s vision in our lives, is it because of a lack of sight, or is our lack of vision due to our sight on the confusions of the world? Fear can be contagious but we must lean into our faith and allow for our CONVICTION to be CONTAGIOUS. Tune in as Pastor Adam delivers the next message in the Distinct series, ‘Clear and Contagious Vision’.

What is God's purpose for my life? What is God's call for my life? How does God's calling fit in with my passion? Often we are unsure how to answer this because we fail to assess what we are free from and what we are free for. God's grace has provided us with great forgiveness but also with great permission. So while it is hard to determine WHAT we are called to do in our lives, we have the permission to focus on the WAY we do it as a representative of Jesus. Tune in as Pastor Adam delivers the next message in the Distinct series, 'Permission for Passion'.

How do we transform from being an actor in our own story to taking control and authoring our own story? In the final installment of Psalms for the Summer vol. 3, Pastor Adam Smallcombe challenges us to take control of our minds. Romans 12:2 instructs us to not be conformed to this world, but transformed by the renewing of our mind. While the enemy has a plan to conform our minds, God has a plan to transform our minds. This is the pattern we see in the Psalms. The Psalmist wrote about victory on the backdrop of hardship. They knew how to adjust the frequency of heaven. Instead of denying our situation and the circumstances surrounding us, we must AMPLIFY the volume of heaven. The volume is always in our control. So no matter the setting to your story, make heaven louder in your life.

In this conversation, Pastor Adam Smallcombe and fathers from our community discuss their experience as fathers. Given the current climate of injustice that is being fervently fought right now, how do we teach our children accurate history, without causing them to be jaded by our hurts and experiences? What we need to accompany that fight against injustice, is a fight for fatherhood. A fight for strong leaders in the home, that love their wives, love their children and love Jesus. This is the time to talk about what it looks like to lead a generation into a new perspective of freedom with a healthy mindset.

In part two of a collection of messages on the Holy Spirit, Pastor Adam Smallcombe speaks on The Everyday Leading and Guiding of the Holy Spirit. While considering the various functions of the Holy Spirit, our comforter, counselor, teacher, what does it mean that the Holy Spirit is our helper? Pastor Adam unpacks that we don’t just receive INSIGHT from the Holy Spirit, but the FORESIGHT to know what it’s all for. Foresight takes our experiences and reveals its purposes. And all we need is the foresight to know that God’s got every step under control. With that, we take each step of faith, knowing the Holy Spirit will guide us every step of the way.

Pastor Adam Smallcombe delivers a message entitled FIX THE FEED, on the INSIGHT of the Holy Spirit. In uncertain times, we might look outside for what will satisfy ourselves. Whether it is our news feed, social media feed, or the food we feed on, we are constantly searching for something more. This is often how we approach the Holy Spirit. As believers, we would be completely missing the mark if we were to get stuck looking for the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, over the application of the Holy Spirit. Fixing our feed allows us to receive the insight of the Holy Spirit, and when we change the flow to see inside-out, we start to affect the world around us. And in every season, no matter the circumstance, we can be fully satisfied in Christ.

In the final installment of the FIXED Series, Pastor Keira Smallcombe preached a message called My Faith is FUNCTIONAL. When wondering if our faith is working, Pastor Keira reminds us to keep running laps of faith. For faith only works when we work it out. In response, which testimony do you want? The testimony of one who WATCHES others work their faith and possess their promises? Or the testimony of someone who WORKS their OWN faith, and touches their own promises?”

View Details

In the third installment of the FIXED Series, Pastor Adam Smallcombe delivers a powerful word, called My Faith is Firm. It begs the question, what does a firm faith look like? With highs and lows, it can be challenging to see your way through the waves of life. But the series scripture, Hebrews 12:2 advises we "... fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and pioneer of our faith..." And the fact that we have seasons of uncertainty doesn't mean that our faith isn't firm. It's all in how we frame it. How are you framing your faith in this season?

View Details

How do we develop a faith that is focused, in a season with so much noise? In the second installment of the FIXED series, My Faith is Focused, Pastor Adam Smallcombe focuses on fixing our eyes on God. That when faced with opposition, we have the opportunity to build endurance in our faith.
