The Beloved ﷺ described prayer as the "pillar of the religion". As Muslims, we're commanded to establish the five daily prayers. For many of us, the routine of it can lead us to becoming absent-minded as we perform them. Without presence, we fail to grasp the true significance of what it means to be in connection with our Lord.
In this episode the significance of prayer is elaborated based on the Hikam, or Aphorisms, of ibn 'Atā-illah and the commentary on them by Sidi ibn 'Ajībah.

The greatest weapon in modern warfare is the media, which Malcolm X warned us can make the oppressed appear as the oppressor and the oppressor appear as the oppressed. Nothing demonstrates this so clearly as in the case of Palestine.
At the time of recording this episode Israel's terrorist army was entering its 8th day of bombardments on Gaza after having in the previously backed illegal settlers expelling Palestinians from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah and attacked worshippers in al-Aqsa Mosque.
I wrote an article about Hamas back in 2014 during the Israeli assault on Gaza at the time. Sadly, not much has changed. I’m re-sharing it because we all need to get our facts straight and not fall victim to the rhetoric and gaslighting of propagandists, some of whom are the duped ones of our own community. As we enter the month of Sha'bān we must use this time in the way the Beloved ﷺ taught us - to prepare for the month of Ramadan. Sha'bān is a blessed month in which our deeds for the entire year are raised up to be presented to the Lord of the Worlds. Our Beloved ﷺ would fast more during this month than any other, and our scholars and predecessors encouraged approaching this month as a training period for Ramadan.
In this episode the virtues of Sha'bān are discussed and a recording of a recent live session at Al-Andalus Academy's Halaqa covering the Hikam of Imam ibn 'Atā-illah that discuss obedience to Allah is shared.

Alhamdulillah, we’re now moving into our fifth year at Al-Andalus Book Club and with that comes our fifth booklist. My tongue is incapable of expressing how grateful I am for this blessing; the conversations we’ve had and the ideas we’ve been able to develop over the years with each book we read. 2020 was a strange year. It was one that forced us back to fundamentals. Our relationships with God, ourselves, family and the world around us. One of the themes that dominated the past year was the nature of science and what expertise (if any) is required to discuss (with authority) an opinion in relation to science. What is science? How do we attain knowledge? Can we agree on any scientific fundamentals for discussion on which we can build knowledge and understanding? Intersecting with that we’ve seen discussions on God, reason and whether we can have science and religion speak to each other on these topics rather than as mutually exclusive areas of knowledge and practice. It seemed fortuitous that one of the reasons I launched Al-Andalus Academy in January of 2020 was to offer courses that would synthesise our knowledge of the physical and spiritual world as Islamic civilizations have done in the past, without realizing that a pandemic would hit only a couple of months later that year and starkly bring these issues into focus. With this in mind, this year’s booklist will focus on the nature of human reason and scientific inquiry and its relationship to Islam. In this episode I'm sharing the recording of the first webinar for our first book of the year, Mistakes Were Made (but not by me) by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson.

Death is the transition from this ephemeral world to the eternal abode. It's an inevitable part of this life. Yet, many of us live as if we're going to be here forever and get stunned when this calamity befalls us.

As Muslims have become increasingly integrated into social justice movements and the entertainment industry, many prominent figures are taking actions that align with the dominant ideology in these spheres. Despite their apparent unrelatedness, a common theme runs through Muslim hijabi Instagram influencers taking off their hijabs, comedians mocking Islamic practices like the dua, and political allegiances made in the name of combating Islamophobia.
In this episode, the distinction made by the late Algerian sociologist and philosopher Malek Bennabi between aesthetic and moral sensibilities as they manifest in the lived experience of the Western European and the Muslim is used as a framework to understand the current trends observed among Muslims in the West.

The Beloved ﷺ told us that a time will come when confusion will reign supreme and believers will be bewildered. It seems we can't go a week without Muslims online jumping into another moshpit that adds to the chaos and further obscures matters rather than bringing any clarity or benefit to the actions of the limbs or the heart.
This is a recording of a talk I gave on Saturday, October 26, 2019, in Sydney, Australia at Mīzān Avenue about the Fourth Pillar upon which the religion of Islam rests as per the Hadith of Jibreel peace be upon him - the Signs of the Hour.
This was not a storytelling talk. Knowledge and action in Islam are intimately linked, and knowledge of the Signs of the Hour implies an imperative to act, which means there’s a whole aspect of fiqh most of us haven’t been exposed to. I hope to be a means of elucidating this area so that it serves as an antidote in these confusing times where a person wakes up a believer and becomes a disbeliever in the evening, or ends his day as a believer and wakes up a disbeliever.
May Allah protect us all from such tribulations.

Shaykh Hamza Yusuf is considered by a number of official entities to be the most influential Muslim leader in the West. Given his public status, he has attracted much attention, some of which has of late been negative given the political engagements he has been involved in. Due to an increasing level of attacks targetting Shaykh Hamza's integrity and questioning his fidelity to the Muslim community, many Muslims are starting to doubt their trust in Shaykh Hamza.

Lady Khadijah RA was the first and while alive the only wife of the Beloved ﷺ. Their relationship was of immense significance and the love the Beloved ﷺ had for her did not diminish with her passing. Lady Aisha RA said she was never jealous of any of the wives of the Beloved ﷺ as she was of Lady Khadijah RA despite having never met her.

The Reliever (al-Munfarijah) is a poem composed by the great Tunisian scholar Yusuf ibn Muhammad at-Tawozari at-Tilimsanī (d. 1119 AD/513 AH). He was known for his mastery of the various Islamic sciences but his erudition and rhetorical abilities became his defining feature to the degree that he was known as ibn an-Nahawi (Son of the Grammarian).

What is the point of what you do? Whether it's educational, career, or business pursuits, life is filled with transitions that end with the ultimate transition from this stage of our existence to the next. As we pass from this world we take nothing with us, and when we meet the angels in the grave we get hit with the reality that none of our titles, accolades, and material wealth meant nothing in and of themselves. Arriving at this realization before our death can trigger an existential crisis. This is not a matter of addressing our specific purpose, but a matter of answering the larger question of life's purpose.

Ritual acts of worship in Islam are intimately linked with natural phenomena, and with the current reliance upon technology, many have created an artificial division that has resulted in the deprivation of the spiritual dimension of these rituals. This bonus episode features a Friday khutba delivered on the first Friday after Ramadan 1439/2018 was concluded with the usual debates about how to determine what day Eid fell on. This is not about whether calculations or moonsighting is valid. Free speech is an often-invoked principle to justify vitriolic and hateful rhetoric against racial and religious groups. However, the philosophical argument for free speech does not necessarily support the form in which the principle of free speech is being invoked in these cases. Furthermore, current research suggests that the issue here is not about the principle of free speech as much as it about the ability to express biased attitudes without having to face consequences.

On September 15th, 2017 I was invited by the Muslim Student Association at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia to participate in a discussion panel the Peter Slezak, a philosopher of science. The general theme was the question "If God Exists, Where is He?" We spoke for close to 3 hours on a number of topics under this wide umbrella, which included what is God, what is science, the nature of belief, the nature of morality, rationalism vs. empiricism, the problem of evil, and ethics.

The derivation and application of Islamic law rely primarily on a number of juristic principles that attempt to reflect what is understood to be divine will. That is why the Arabic term to describe it, Sharia, literally means "a way to the source". Though some might find it arbitrary and unyielding in some aspects, there is a logic to the Sharia that can only be ascertained most clearly if one is familiar with the Quran and Sunnah, and confirmed through familiarity with research exploring the various aspects of the human experience.

Eid al-Ad'ha is a blessed and significant time in the Muslim calendar in which the great sacrifice of our father Abraham peace be upon him and his son is commemorated. It also presents an opportunity to clarify the epistemological difference between Muslim and non-Muslim vegans. The choice to give up the consumption of meat and other animal products for a Muslim is not based on the same foundation as a non-Muslim, and Eid al-Ad'ha is a time to practically show how that is.
Topics addressed in this episode include the ruling on sacrificing an animal on Eid, how the Companions of the Beloved ﷺ approached this question and why a number of them stopped sacrificing animals on Eid al-Ad'ha, and the evolution of moral judgment on eating meat.

Modern culture can be characterized as one that elevates feeling over fact and equivocates between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. Islamic cosmology and the Quran teach that the male and the female are equal, yet different opposing parts of a whole. Their relationship is that of complementarity as opposed to sameness.
Despite the indefatigable efforts to attribute all differences between men and women to social roles imposed by culture and upbringing, studies in the fields of anatomy, neuroscience, psychology, and social psychology have established that nature plays an important role in producing differences that make men and women as collective group significantly different from each other in some key areas. Though a spectrum may exist in some of their traits, men and women are each distinct from one another and these differences give rise to differences in disease, behaviour, and what they consider as priorities in life.

Where is political authority to be grounded - in claims of revelation, or in claims of human reason? The relationship and tension between religion and politics was called by the German-American philosopher Leo Strauss the "theologico-political" problem. Advocates of secularization theory, such as Karl Marx, Max Weber, and others saw the rise of religious diversity and attacks against religious belief, coupled with the fall political authority that drew on claims of divine appointment as conditions that would ultimately lead to the disappearance or at the very least the privatization of religion. However, their prediction has not come to fruition. Moreover, the context in which secularization arose in Western Europe is a specific one that has given rise to falsely generalized assumptions about the relationship between religion and politics, many of which do not apply in the Islamic context.

The relationship between Islam and Science, and the topic of Evolutionary Theory are among the chief concerns many young Muslims find themselves having to deal with. In addition, many Muslims undertake graduate level degree programs in Islamic Studies departments in Western universities, but they hardly have spent time in traditional study of the religion, and most haven't undertaken courses on epistemology. It is therefore not surprising in this climate of intellectual chaos to find an increasing number of Muslims express doubts about Islam.

What makes something true and a belief about a proposition a valid one? The philosophical literature is rich with discussions and theories about the nature of Truth, much of which may appear to be more of an exercise in intellectual musings. However, there is a real personal impact one will experience when they have to decide between competing claims to truth.

The idea of being religious often conjures up to the mind the image of one being divorced from the material world to engage in ritual practice with the purpose of attaining nearness to God. However, from an Islamic point of view this is an extremely narrow understanding that limits the scope of what Islam is meant to encompass as a way of life. While devotion to ritual practice is highly encourage and praised, it certainly is not the only way to get close to God. Indeed, Muslim scholars have considered that the ritualistic night vigil for a student or a scholar is to study and write. From this the division of transitive and non-transitive acts of worship was developed, where in which the merit of the action is evaluated based on whether its benefit is restricted to the person performing it or more widespread to benefit the whole community.
The topic addressed in this episode is on the question of religiosity in Islam, which encompasses much more than simply holding prayers and fasting.

Neuroscience is a fascinating field, and scientists working in this area have produced a great body of research that has a direct impact on numerous medical conditions. In addition, findings from brain studies continue to shed insight into the physiological underpinnings correlated with behaviour. However, too often we fall prey to our own success and impose unwarranted conclusions to extend the relevance of neuroscience studies beyond the questions they were intended to answer.
