DYING OF LAUGHTER with Chelsea London Lloyd is a podcast featuring interviews with millennial comedians and funny-at-heart humans with a deceased parent or sibling. Lloyd grew up with two sick parents; her dad died of ALS after a 15 year journey + her mom currently combats stage 4 metastatic breast cancer for the second time. Bonus episodes include interviews with grief counselors, funeral directors, cancer survivors, previvors, therapists, life coaches, oncologists + genetic counselors to name a few.
Dean is a military brat who moved 18 times in 17 years. Today we discuss the loss of Dean's son, Adam. Adam was a USMC Corporal who served in Afghanistan and died by suicide a year after coming home at age 24.

Today my good friend Meryl is interviewing me. She is an established comedian, not to mention one of my funniest friends. We discuss the differences between our breakups, dating in LA, and we then deep-dive on almost every date I've been on in the past year. Today we explore Mackenzie's poetry, informed by their own losses. Their brother was killed in a car accident at 19 and their mom died 5 years later from breast cancer.
Mackenzie is an associate marriage and family therapist, certified iRest Yoga Nidra meditation teacher and trauma informed yoga teacher. They specialize in working with grief and loss, having served the bereavement department of Pathways Hospice as a grief counselor.
Mackenzie also specializes in LGBTQ+ issues, lifecycles and transitions, and has a particular affinity and skill for working with teens and young adults.
Mackenzie holds a Masters Degree in Integral Counseling Psychology from The California Institute of Integral Studies, and a bachelors degree in Gender Studies from Syracuse University. Mackenzie is a writer and poet, small dog enthusiast, and ocean lover.

Today we discuss the loss of Jesse's brother and mom. Jesse's brother died by suicide/overdose in 2012 when he was 19 and Jesse was 22. Two weeks later I met a man, and we fell madly in love. It was a fairy-tale romance for a month and a half, and he convinced me to join him on a romantic month-long vacation in Italy. Forty-eight hours before we were supposed to get on a plane, he told me he needed to go by himself. I was devastated. So, I had a decision to make. Either stay home and be heartbroken, or go travel Europe for a month by myself. And staying at home heartbroken? F%*k. That."

"In 2015 I lost my dad to suicide. He never left a note or gave me a chance to say goodbye. Until that moment I had lived a sheltered life. The only family members I had lost were my elderly grandparents. Tragedy was something I had only seen in movies. In 2018 a friend urged me to volunteer with him at the Suicide Prevention Center. After volunteering once a week for two years, I became a Supervisor. Now I train and mentor new Crisis Counselors. Jasmine Souers, a breast cancer survivor from Jacksonville, FL, was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer at the age of 26. Diagnosed just two days before the new year in 2016, Jasmine thought the results of her biopsy would determine the trajectory of the upcoming year, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth. In 2017, with the support of her family and close friends, Jasmine underwent a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction and 25 rounds of proton therapy radiation.
Marissa Thomas is a four-year breast cancer survivor from Tacoma, WA. Diagnosed in November 2015 at the age of 35, with Stage II High-Grade Invasive Ductal Carcinoma In-Situ (DCIS) 35% ER positive, just shy 3 months of her 36th birthday. Her active treatment in 2016 consisted of lumpectomy, Chemotherapy, Radiation and two reconstruction surgeries. While in treatment, Marissa turned to social media as a way to connect with other women and find stories similar to hers in hopes of making the journey easier.

AMY BYER SHAINMAN, also known as BRCA Responder, is an advocate, author, and producer providing support and education surrounding BRCA and other hereditary cancer syndromes. She's the executive producer of the award-winning documentary Pink & Blue: Colors of Hereditary Cancer. @brcaresponder
Shainman is a BRCA1 gene mutation carrier and a "previvor"--meaning she is a survivor of a predisposition to cancer (a previvor is someone at extraordinarily high risk for cancer who has not had the disease). In 2010, she had two prophylactic surgeries to reduce her cancer risk drastically; a nipple-sparing, skin-sparing mastectomy with reconstruction and oophorectomy with a hysterectomy.
Cure Magazine, The Jewish Journal, and The Palm Beach Post have featured Shainman's story. Shainman's medical memoir "Resurrection Lily" has won several literary awards and was the December 2020 book club selection of The National Library of Medicine.
Shainman's current project is LADY. She is a producer on the scripted feature film that highlights what it's like to be a BRCA positive female at high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Kristy is the author of, "Rise Up, Little Bluebirds," a sweet tale of grief and community. She lives with her husband and four children in Southern Minnesota. Today we discuss the loss of her mom to cancer, going viral on Facebook Marketplace, and writing her first children's book about loss.
Kristy is the spearhead of her family’s heart forward bluebird house business “Rudolph’s Bluebird Houses” which they built around giving back and to create community and support surrounding grief after the loss of Kristy’s mother to cancer in 2018. Seeing the way her father was using his hands to help heal his heart by building homes for her mother’s favorite bird, she had the idea to connect his houses to the community and they are now helping thousands of other families work through their grief. The bluebird carries the universal symbol of joy and happiness along with it and has became an emblem of hope for their family through their loss. It reminds us that grief is a process and it can be a little less isolating when we help each other through it.

Our MENTOR PROGRAM consists of caring + strong female role models who have also experienced mother loss and teach the girls + young women of empowerHER that their grief is survivable.
All programs and activities are provided at no charge to the family and are available both in-person and virtually for girls across the nation and around the globe.

Max Adler is a powerhouse of a person. Today we dive deep into the complexities of losing your mom, becoming a dad, and the wild journey that is an acting career in Los Angeles. Most significantly, we discuss the loss of his mother when Max was in high school. While she ultimately died of a heart attack, Max's mother combatted Lyme Disease as well as muscular dystrophy.
Born in Queens, New York and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, Adler is a cast member of the 2011 Golden Globe Winner for Best Television Series - Comedy (Glee) and a 2011 Screen Actors Guild Award nominee for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series (Glee) where he played the slushy throwing homophobic bully, Dave Karofsky. He is also known for his controversial, buzzed about character, Tank, in the Peabody Award winning series Switched at Birth.
Adler has worked with Woody Allen in Cafe Society, Clint Eastwood in Sully, and was a lead in the film Mope, based on the shocking true story, which premiered at Sundance 2019. He was most recently seen in front of the camera in Aaron Sorkin's Trial of the Chicago 7, which Adler also co-executive produced. He has recurred on the soap opera Young & The Restless, and has guest starred in such shows as The Big Bang Theory, Bones, Criminal Minds, The Flash and many more.
Adler is heavily involved with GLAAD, The Trevor Project, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

If she's not on set, Maggie is running trails in Griffith Park or out sailing in the ocean. This Minneapolis native is a graduate of USC's School of Dramatic Arts. She is always active, whether it's leading pump-up chants, swimming, or doing yoga.
Last year, Maggie broke her foot and crutched two half marathons - the fastest woman to ever do so.

And yet, everyone tells you saying goodbye is a gift: "You're so lucky." What a peculiar experience... to wish a person who knows they will soon leave this world farewell. To a person who couldn't reply, as they had lost their voice over a year ago. To a person who couldn't move. To a person who had been paralyzed for over a decade. To a person who was at one point a lawyer, father, brother, and friend. But perhaps a person who was most known for being "the guy in the wheelchair" or "the guy with ALS." To a person who no longer dazzled, committed, or cared. To a person who was also your dad.
I really resonate with the quote: "Grief is love with nowhere to go." Maybe this podcast could be a place to go...
