Sleep is a BIG deal! As parents this is ultra-magnified. What if you had sleep apnea and stopped breathing thousands of time during the night? The effects that would have on your physical health, mental health, and work productivity would be extreme, to say the least. Some of you already know what I'm talking about. It's estimated that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. That's a ton of people functioning at 1/4 of their full potential. What if we could drastically lower that number by simply paying attention to the way our kids breathe? Of course, you would need to do more than just watch them, you would need to take them to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist like Madan Kandula, MD. Who is doing groundbreaking work to change the statistics and help children and adults with the basic need to... breathe. But It all starts with having an awareness to recognize the symptoms.

Today on How To Raise a Maverick we're talking about the drinking culture. Not the drink culture of the younger generation, we are talk'n 'bout parents. If you know me personally I love a good cocktail. So when Lisa Boucher starting talking about "when kids see you use alcohol as a way to cope with life... it's not a great message." Uhhm OUCH!  I felt that one right in my "mommy needs a drink" tee shirt!Lisa who is a former alcoholic, the daughter of a formal alcoholic, mother of grown twin boys and has been helping folks with their struggles with substance abuse for 20 plus years... is calling for a "Wake Up!!" My favorite thing she said was "you can't raise a Maverick if you're a mess."#truthIf you enjoy a good mindset shift and wine... this is a good one for you!

Parents LOVE to share photos of their kids. Kids are cute, funny and the grandparents want to see their every move.  But is there a price to pay for letting the world have access to our kid's images...(and if you share them on any social media site you are sharing them with the world).  YES!  Here are just a few ... 1. 50% of the images used on pedophilia sites are stolen from social media sites. Often they photoshopped into very sexual images. Uhhmm creepy! 2. Digital kidnapping. This is where someone decides that they like your child, create a profile using their name and either pretend to the child or parent in the comments. Don't believe me.. check out #littlegirlrp  (rp means Role Play, they are roleplaying that your kid is theirs) Many of the comments and tags are sexual and downright disturbing.  3. Digital DNA. This is a term that is now being used to describe your legacy and life online. Since facial recognition software is so commonly used now your child entire life will easily be searched by universities, employers and bullies alike. Let me know what you think... with me via our private Facebook page Maverick- Parents  Hugs,  Emily

From Hot Head Mom to Calm, Cool and Collected For many many moons, I have had my skinny little toolbox of trick that I can pull out when kids decide to push ALL my buttons. BUT things have changed and I now have the ability to withstand the creative wrath my offspring can throw at me. What happened you may ask... well I have been working VERY hard for a year to acquire the skills of a "master Parent  (if there is such a thing). While I am still a far cry away from a perfect mom I have had a major paradigm shift that has served me and this wild family of mine well. Here are the three shifts that have happened to me... 1. Positive time out... yes, you read it right... positive, NOT NEGATIVE. And this time out is not just for the kiddos... it's for you as well. I am officially giving you permission to lock yourself in the bathroom, check your phone, hang out with me on Instagram :) and get the anger and primitive brain to take the back burner to your frontal lobe. YES  use your highly evolved frontal lobe to deal with your little (or big) spitfire child. And get them to do the same is a spot ( far from you) where they can chill the heck out). Once the rage is gone THEN you can decide how you want to deal with your parenting challenge. 2. Kids DON'T have to feel bad to change their behavior. This has been a massive shift for me because when I think if discipline I don't envision the kids enjoying it. but the reality is yo do what the kids to feel good about themselves or they will not do better. This is a  hard shift for most parents to make (including me).  3. Connecting and recognizing feelings instead of shaming. If you haven't yet you should read "Love Languages"... find out what your kids love language is and connect with them that way. My littlest love language is touch, so hugs snuggles and tickles are her jam for sure. So after you connect, listen and really try to empathize as much as you can (authenticity).

When Did Youth Sports Stop Being Fun? Screaming parents, crying kids, and frazzled coaches. You don't have to look far to find parents that take their kid's soccer/ baseball/football game WAY to serious. John O'Sullivan the author of Changing the Game and founder of Changing the Game Project brings some great wisdom to the reality of youth sport today. The three main takeaways ... The things that you think you are doing to help your kids may actually be hurting them. Coaches and parents need to work together... coaches are not the enemy (and neither are the referees). The chances of your child ever getting a scholarship are extremely slim, but the paybacks from playing sports are guaranteed.

Help keep HowToRaiseaMaverick going. https://howtoraiseamaverick.com/donate My gosh! Yet another school shooting! This week I explore the idea that what we are dealing with is partly the Werther Effect. Which is the backstory that explains copycat suicides and mass shootings like what we just saw at Santa Fe High School in Texas. I have spoken before about the fact that white males have the highest rate of suicide in the U.S and I have a firm belief that these shooting go hand in hand with the suicide issue. Listen in and let me know if you agree. NEXT... Neuro-Linguistic-Programming is an AMAZING therapy that I have just discovered. As a huge believer in counseling and therapying being the best parenting tool, there is, I am always looking to better myself and make sure I am in the best mental place to raise my kiddo. Cause God only knows I need all the help I can get!!! So I have done my fair share of sitting in a chair spilling my guts... but to be honest it seems like I'm not really getting to the heart of an issue. I just feel like a whining baby complaining about life and trying to find something worth talking about. BUT... NLP is completely different. You focus on a specific outcome that you would like to achieve. This sounds SO stupid... but all I wanted was to remember to take my supplements, morning and night. It seems like a silly thing to go to therapy for but it is a real issue for me and I HAVE to take them or I will get very sick (I know this from experience). Anyways, after just two sessions, I have had a complete paradigm shift and have been able to shift issues that are seemly unrelated. I am completely blown away by how well it works. If you live in Colorado the extremely talented practitioner that I see is Cheryl Breault. That is a wrap for this week! Shine On, Emily

The topic of authority and kids is a fascinating one for me. On one hand, we would love for our kids to respect us, but we don't really want them to be part of a mindless herd following an authority figure. This week is about how to navigate this tricky subject and teach our kids to wisely and critical follow those worth influencing them. These are the three main lessons that will help decipher whether to stay and be mentored or find a new path. 1. Appear to conform. Do what you are told even if you think/ know better ways of doing something. 2. Does it FIT? Teach them to (internally) question if what they're being told to do fits within their moral core. If not, they can respectfully leave the organization/group. 3. Be curious and observant. Watch and learn objectively. If you have an authority figure worth following you will learn and grow. Or you may find that their results are poor and their morals are low.

The #1 Things Parents Need to Do in Order To Raise Grounded Kids... The more parenting advice we read and listen to the more confusing it can be. After years of raising kids and studying the research about each generation, I have come to a conclusion. If you want your kids to have a work ethic, grit empathy, and curiosity... SEND THEM OUTSIDE! It really is that easy. You don't have to come up with crafts from Pinterest, buy any new toys or supplies. Open the door and let them run free. Trust me they will find all the tools and toys they need. And no you don't need to have a playdate to make this happen. Some of the best experiences in nature are done in solitude.

Celebrities are Not Our Pets.  What would you do if someone grabbed your baby's arm? In the news today Blac Chyna got into a fight over someone grabbing her baby, as a result, she lost sponsorship because of the altercation.  In my opinion, no mother should ever be condemned for protecting their babies! And this is a great chance to have a discussion with the kids that just because we see these entertainers on the screen/web they are not our pets. Their personal life and kids should never be negatively affected. They are just human!!!! We Need to Bring Back Good Ole "Love Making"  There is so much sex education out there and not enough talk about how "sex" is a physical expression of LOVE. More and more we see the media trying to tell us and our kids that violent abusive sex is love. WHAT!!!??? Movies like 50 Shades of Grey keep reinforcing the hype that like Beauty and the Beast that abusive relationships are not only OK they are sexy and normal. For all the women in Hollywood that are coming out of the woodwork with assault claims... you think they would be fighting to keep movies like this made.

How Do We Deal With The Millennial Problem? Start by recognizing that they are NOT the problem. Mike Miles completely turned my brain inside out with this interview. I can honestly say that this is one of the most important interviews I have ever done. Be prepared to have your eyes (and ears) opened.

Stop Telling Us and Our Kids It's OK To Fail! Everywhere I turn these days there is the message... "failure is what achievement is built on". Humm no. That's actually incorrect.  Statements like "Failure is NOT an Option" is what inspired true greatness.  There are some people who say that they have failed and failed and that's how they got to the place they are now. No... they did not fail! They kept at the same thing until they made it.  Keep your eye on the prize... your method might change, is that failure NO. It's called a pivot.  You are not failing if you are still working toward your goal. You fail when you completely walk away from the entire mission.  Show your kids how to commit to your vision and not promote your lack of drive as "part of the process". Choose NOT to fail.

3 Steps to Teach Empathy and Eliminate Risk of Exploitation "College Kids are about 40% lower in empathy than their counterparts of 20 to 30 years ago, as measured by standard tests of this personality trait." Says Sara Konrath, who is a researcher at U-M Institute for Social Research The biggest drop in empathy was is after the year 2000

Candace Joice who is the Education Director at i-empathize is tackling this drop in empathy head on. Today Candace shares with us the three elements that i-empathize teaches kids during their entertain events to build empathy, be open and proactive about their areas of weakness a.k.a "push points" and how to recognize the difference between a negative and positive pull.

[6:07] Nurturing Empathy: There are three natural human responses that humans can happen when we seeing suffering. 1. Apathy. A simple response of "I don't care" 2.Sympathy. "I feel really bad that I am watching someone go through this" For kids it might be watching someone gets bullied in the hall or watching someone come to school every day hungry. Sympathy is just a feeling and can be burdensome to carry it inside of you. 3. Empathy is an action and an empowering position because it is acknowledging the capacity you have to make a difference in someone's life.

[8:01] What happens when kids are taught to be empathetic? Their own self-esteem will be ignited along with their sense of empowerment by communication with the kids that they can make such a huge difference in the life of someone else.

[8:33] We are born with a sense of empathy. A baby who hears another baby cry will also cry because there is a sense of "someone else is in pain and I feel that". But over time if that empathy is not nurtured it will fade away. Nurturing empathy in kids is essential to weeding exploitation out of our cultural soil.

[9:27] Why are we seeing this lack of empathy and disregard for human life? Author Michele Borba who wrote 'Unselfie Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me-World' Says that we have definitely hit a new generation of the youth that is called the "selfie generation" and that social media is all about displaying and curating a certain kind of image, that can take over from what we hope would be the concern for others and what others want and need.

[12:15] What is a push factor? A push factor is something that is outside of your control that can make you feel vulnerable. For young people, it could be something like not enough food or a lot of alone time because the parents are out of the home. I-empathize whats kids to be able to recognize the things that make them feel scared or unsafe. Once that feeling can be translated and recognized you can find help and safe place to deal with it. Another way to look at a push factor is that it is a weak link, a place in the chain that is not safe.

[14:52] What are negative and positive pulls? After the kids identify a place that makes them feel unsafe, then they can start thinking about who could be a positive pull or someone that could help them deal with it in a positive way. Because of the fact that "push factors" are places that can be used against the kids and be used to easily manipulate them in a negative way. In the youth programs, they teach the kids how to recognize those positive and negative pulls so they can navigate their personal situation in a safe way that is less likely to land them in a place where they are no longer in control.

[17:35] My (Emily's) personal experience with a 'negative pull' when I was 16.

[20:03] Candace gives us in detail what a lesson in "good pull, bad pull" would look during one of their events.

What is a Cult Anyway? There has been quite a bit in the news about the Church of Scientology being a cult. Since have all watched the stories of Tom Cruise and any many other celebrities come to the surface as being members, it's made me wonder... What is a cult anyway?  How do people get sucked into these things? How can we make sure that our kids' will be able to cut through any scam and not drink the cool-aid? In my lifetime I have seen first had a few smaller cults, watched the people in them and have come up with a list of things Mavericks need to be aware of. ~>Cults can come in the form of religious, corporate, self-help programs and political groups. ~>They usually all have one leader and use a "pyramid " style recruiting process. That means that the member that recruits you get the credit and discredit for what you do. ~>They are secretive about what they do. If you find that they have not been straight up about how they operate... that is a red flag. ~>Your money and time are theirs. If you are finding it hard to find time for your friends and family as a result of being pressured into activities and they are asking for more and more money. Working for free and needing to pay for services, books, and workshops that get progressively more and more expensive in order to "succeed"... look for the door and start running. This article is referring to a cult that witnessed in the UK. Cults "target vulnerable students" By Emily Sheffield In Greater Manchester, which has nearly 70,000 students, the union has discovered plans by the Manchester Christian Church, a branch of the International Church of Christ UK (ICC), to rent a room on the campus to hold weekly meetings in October. The controversial cult has already been accused of preying on students and there are fears the latest series of meetings held in the Deaf Centre, a campus building, have been specifically aimed at the city's students who returned last week for the start of the new term. Anthony Noun, welfare officer for the Manchester university Students Union, said: "We are aware of cult activities close to campus and would like to alert students. Followers sometimes even drop out of their academic courses because the cult takes up all of their time and they are asked to hand over part of their income." ~> Sleep and food deprivation are classic ways to weaken the brain and has been used to manipulate members of the cults. ~> Character defamation is a handly trick cults like to use. No one likes to be called out and shamed in a group so they use that power to create fear and motivate the other members to do more work harder and give more money. ~> Isolation.  If anyone discourages you from contacting friends and family, this is (usually) a bad sign. That is unless your friends and family are cult members :) At the end of the day... just make sure your kids QUESTION EVERYTHING. Any group that doesn't allow questioning is suspect.
