Host Paul Booth and Production Designer Clay Griffith dive into the fun and inspirations of his many film credits. The talk moves around albums, musicians and some lessons that came up along the way.
As a Production Designer Clay Griffith has helped bring to life films such as Dolemite is my Name, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Almost Famous, We Bought a Zoo, Roadies and Radio. He also worked as Set Dec on classics like As Good as it Gets, Sleepless in Seattle, Jerry Maguire and Seven.
Clay was very gracious to share his time with us on a down day from his current gig as a Production Designer.

This episode was a true joy to do for Host Paul Booth given he met Erick in passing at a small Film Festival in 2013. The last time our Host spoke to Erick he was writing a SHORT titled Blast Beat (circa 2015). What happened next is why we love Talking Movies.....
His feature film, Blast Beat, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival as part of the U.S. Dramatic Competition. Sony Pictures and Vertical Entertainment picked up Blast Beat for distribution, which was released in May, 2021. His work has been critically acclaimed in the U.S. and abroad, connecting with audiences across multiple cultures and genres. In 2021 he consulted for Disney’s animated film, Encanto, and was part of a think tank created by Sony and Montecito Pictures to bring Latinx representation to the big screen. Castrillon got his MFA in Writing for the Screen and Television from the University of Southern California, and his BA in English Literature from the Florida International University.

Her contributions can be seen in multiple Oscar-Nominated and Winning Films. On this episode she discussed her contributions to Silence of the Lambs, Quiz Show and relationships working with Jonathan Demme and Robert Redford.
Kalina brought us into process of designing a Film with over 100 sets (Long Shot with Charlize Theron). We had an open talk about the challenges (4 weeks to build a two-story for Long Shot) and fun of working with Cinematographers the caliber of BAFTA nominee Newton Thomas Sigel on the The Conspirator.
Kalina is a NYU Film School graduate and was nominated for a student Oscar for her Film THE LAST DAY OF JUNE. Kalina has over three decades in the Film industry. We also had the pleasure of discussing Film History and how she is influenced by Cinema as a global entity.
She grew up in a Communist Country and that set the tone for a in-depth look at movies and life. Kalina's next work is The Tender Bar (filmed during Covid-19) directed by George Clooney, shot by Martin Ruhe A.S.C.,and the release date has not been announced.

When a Native Hawaiian hula dancer escaping her abusive boyfriend crashes her beat-up van into a mysterious homeless man, she finds herself flung into a surrealistic journey of self-exploration and enlightenment. Director Christopher Kahunahana’s eagerly awaited feature debut breaks down the enduring, stereotypical image of paradise we have of Waikiki to reveal a vulnerable and authentic portrait of indigeneity.

In a well-paced, never manipulative and excellent Film Howard not only captures the fear of Fire, but its peace. The films ultimate message is making peace with Nature and life. There is Political and Social subtext in this doc and Howard lays it out superbly, byt letting you decide if Government or local official's are behaving properly at any time.

This eye-opening, stunning and tear-jerker of a movie is:
Based on true events, SARIA follows two inseparable orphaned sisters, Saria and Ximena, who fight against the daily abuse and unimaginable hardship at the Virgen de La Asuncion Safe Home in Guatemala when a tragic fire claims the lives of 41 orphaned girls. The film is an urgent call to action for the women who lost their lives, and those who survived the fire. The real life survivors, who are seeking justice for the negligence that lead to the death of the 41 girls, are currently in the middle of a legal battle with the Guatemalan Government.
Rather than using traditional child actors to play the roles of the orphans, Buckley opted to reach out to orphanages throughout Mexico to participate in the film. Ultimately selecting Ministerios De Amor Orphanage in Mexico City to work with in partnership. Buckley felt that these children, if given an opportunity, could shine. Both lead actresses, Estefania Tellez (Saria) and Gabriela Ramirez (Ximena) worked together to get their parts in the film.

PBS SoCal and KCET, Southern California's home for award-winning public media programming and premieres of new PBS programs, announced today the debut of a new documentary DODGERS STORIES: 6 DECADES IN LA. The special is a look back at the colorful history of the team through the eyes of the fans, as well as the players. Through archival footage, interviews and historical photos, the program will explore the rich saga of the team that has been in LA since 1958. The program premieres this Thanksgiving on Thurs., Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. on PBS SoCal and will also air at 8:30 p.m. on KCET. Following the broadcast, the film will be available for streaming exclusively on PBS Passport, the member-supported streaming service.
The list of Dodgers greats featured in the program is prolific, from Roy Campanella and Jackie Robinson to Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax, as well as Orel Hershiser and Fernando Valenzuela. The film will include interviews with former all-star players including Steve Garvey, Bill Russell, Ron Cey, Steve Yeager, Manny Mota, Steve Sax, Nomar Garciaparra, Kenny Landreaux and others about their most memorable games. Host Paul Booth reviews HORN FROM THE HEART: THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD STORY. This documentary premiered at The Newport Beach Film Festival in 2017. Talking Pictures caught the permiere, where the Film received two additional screenings and won a Special Achievement in Editing Award.
"The sound of Paul Butterfield (Paul Butterfield Blues Band) was born in Chicago circa 1965. The music only gets more potent. This musician and band mixed blues, rock, Jazz, Indian music, learned from the masters, Chicago, racism, Vietnam, the '60s, their youth with acid, weed, sex, being white and they walked into BLACK CLUBS. They knew it was about all of it, not just the good. The times were when youth embraced youth and did not hold back. They came from a time you could like the opposite sex and admire it, without there being a PR scandal. Carlos Santana quote "Good Art: is cursing, praying and making love."
Ultimately the music is FEARLESS. Lay, Arnold, Bishop, Bloomers and Paul Butterfield had no fear of the known or unknown. Only musicians like Miles, Santana and Jimi are how to bring new listeners in.

Host Paul Booth reviews Writer/Producer/Director Quincy Rose's new film. The Narcissists hit iTunes, Amazon and other VOD platforms this week. Quincy has been on Talking Pictures a few times and you can also see his other films on Amazon.
In his third outing as a Director Quincy Rose went out on an ambitious limb with his shots and choice of editing. In a film reportedly shot in five days and uniquely-dialogue heavy (Quincy) Roses's power of the pen it what made it work. It is rare a film is packed with one-liners, but is not a gag film. I recommend this movie for its quality, but also because it is has the guts to just be without trying to meet a made-up "need" of what I am supposed to feel.

Isabel (Williams), a co-founder of an orphanage in Kolkata travels to New York to meet a potential benefactor, Theresa. Despite her frustration by the need to justify a charitable donation, she agrees to the meeting. Isabel is unexpectedly invited to the wedding and the events that ensue force her to confront her past.
Closing thoughts: After the Wedding manages to mix social-issues into a family drama with some twists and turns that are as tense as viewing a War-film.

Director of photography James Laxton’s work is dedicated to telling intense, heartfelt stories that capture the imagination and hearts of his audience. He is best known for his work on Moonlight, which earned him a Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography and won the award for Best Picture. Directed by Barry Jenkins and starring Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Trevante Rhodes, Laxton’s work also received: a prestigious American Society of Cinematographers Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Theatrical Releases.
Most recently, Laxton teamed up with Jenkins again for If Beale Street Could Talk, based on the novel by James Baldwin. Host Paul reviews: Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski takes us inside the mind of one of the last century’s great characters, offering a startling look at how history can stand in the way of true artistic genius in one generation while stepping aside to reveal it dramatically in the next. In 1968, pop culture collector Glenn Bray, who had an interest in surrealist art, happened upon an unusual book featuring the art of Stanislav Szukalski. Like most people, Bray had never heard of Szukalski, but he delighted in showing the book of drawings and photos of sculptures to his circle of friends in the underground art comic world, including Robert and Suzanne Williams and George DiCaprio, who found the forgotten Polish master’s vision far ahead of its time.
It was a few years later when Bray noticed an unusual poster depicting Copernicus on the wall of a small bookstore in Tarzana – something he immediately recognized as the work of Szukalski. The bookseller informed him that the artist himself had given the poster as a gift – in fact, he lived nearby. Bray couldn’t believe it – this long-forgotten genius was still alive, and in the same area code.

SYNOPSIS: Straight-laced Bryan (JAKE THOMAS) agrees to drive his parents’ luxury RV to Cabo over Christmas break, so they can fly down and drive back one way. Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper, was gang raped by six white boys in 1944 Alabama. Common in Jim Crow South, few women spoke up in fear for their lives. Not Recy Taylor, who bravely identified her rapists. The NAACP sent its chief rapeinvestigator Rosa Parks, who rallied support and triggered an unprecedented outcry for justice.
Our film exposes a legacy of physical abuse of black women and reveals Rosa Parks’ intimate role in Recy Taylor’s story. An attempted rape against Parks was but one inspiration for her ongoing fight for justice for countless women like Taylor. The 1955 bus boycott was an end result, not a beginning.

"On a Knife Edge" is a father-son story about Guy and George Dull Knife that unfolds over the course of George’s coming-of-age journey. He commits himself to the fight for social justice, but struggles with adapting the old ways and his father’s expectations to the modern-day realities of growing up on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Harris also serves as the Shorts Curator for the Denver Film Festival, a Programming Associate for the Sundance Film Festival, Programmer for the Seattle International Film Festival and is on the nomination committee for Cinema Eye Honors, which awards exemplary craft and innovation in nonfiction film. Her previous work includes programming and managing industry relations at AFI FEST, aiding in the curation of Vimeo's On Demand channel and consulting on the creation of the Hobnobben Film Festival in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After spending much of her life in the South, she currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband.

All that changed one day when Guy found Haley, the object of his affections, waiting naked in his bed — for someone else. Unbeknownst to Guy, his slick Senator boss was using Guy’s apartment to have an affair with the girl of his dreams.
