In Chapter 2, Paul reminds the Thessalonican Church of his primary mission. It's tempting to view Palm Sunday as a glorious occasion where Christ is accepted wholeheartedly. It seems this way when you read Mark 11:1-11. This morning, Zach finished our Acts series by preaching through the end of Acts 28. The book ends with Paul arguing with the Jews one last time. In this sermon, we start the last chapter of Acts. Finally, Paul makes it to Rome. After being shipwrecked and snakebit, he receives the fellowship of believers with joy, and thanks God for his deliverance. At any point, Paul's journey could have ended. Graciously, when we look to our relationship and walk with Christ Jesus, if you know him, the goal has already been accomplished. In Him, you have been made a new creation. It was not your doing, nor did you want it. Salvation is free because God loved and pursued His people. As you begin 2023, remember the Gospel- Christ Jesus has washed you with His blood and made you new.

As we continue in Joshua 9 this week, we see the Israelites deceived by the Gibeonites. They are in fear of the God of Israel and seek to be in covenant with them for their own protection. The Gibeon story is one we can relate to- they deserved the wrath of God, yet they are shown grace. If our salvation was dependent on us, there would be no hope. Let us look to the Gospel as we review the story of the Gibeonites.

As we open our Bibles to Joshua 6 this morning, we read through a familiar story outlining the conquering of Jericho. The Lord leads the Israelites into battle and destroys their enemy through unconventional means. Within the rubble, we see that there is one surviving family- the family of Rahab, the prostitute. Her faith was in the one true God, and He had mercy upon her.

As we continue in Joshua this week, we see the story of Exodus end. The Lord, in his faithfulness, has brought his people to take the promised land. No longer are they to survive on manna wandering in the desert, but they are to eat the fruit from the vine in the land of Canaan. The Lord has brought them to a new day.

Looking to the previous chapter, Joshua picks up as the Israelites cross the Jordan. Through His power, the Lord has brought his people into the promised land and has fulfilled the promise He made to deliver them. Joshua directs them to build a memorial out of twelve stones to remind them what the Lord has done on their behalf. Why is this necessary? Human beings are prone to forget.
As we look at the text, let us always remember that our God is faithful. Faithfulness is not something He wavers from- on the mountaintop, in the valley, and everywhere in between, our God is faithful. We hope this sermon blesses you in the Lord!

As we continue our journey through Joshua this morning, we look at the origin story of Rahab. At first glance, she is nothing more than a gentile prostitute and a liar, but her story doesn't end there. We can spend time debating the morality of her lie, but something that is much more beneficial for us is the truth she confesses: "the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.” Let us never forget that we were no better off than Rahab, but God, in his mercy, sought to save us. In this message, we start our sermon series on the book of Joshua. The book picks up where Deuteronomy leaves off- Moses has died and Joshua, son of Nun, is to be the Lord-appointed leader of the Israelites. Ultimately, Joshua points us to the coming deliverer, the coming victor, the final salvation: Jesus Christ.

This morning, Hank walks us through the book of Deuteronomy. Often when discussing the Old Testament, many are led astray believing that their salvation is contingent on what they can do externally. What Deuteronomy shows us is the reality of our dependence on God to change our hearts. It shows us that our salvation is dependent on the grace of God. It points us to the coming savior: Jesus Christ. Let us not look to our own righteousness- let us look to the finished work of Christ for our salvation!

Often, as we look to the Old Testament, we paint the Israelites with rebellious hearts. We see a people prone to wander and depart from the Lord to pursue their own desires. If we are honest, we'd recognize that we have the same tendencies. We reject the Lord, his kindness, and his provision because we love the world. Thankfully, Numbers shows us that in spite of our dissatisfaction and sin, God is faithful to save his people. Let us rejoice this morning- salvation does not come from our work but Christ Jesus' work on the cross.

Our lives are to be rooted and grounded in this reality so we may further the gospel within our households and community.
