The Road to Emmaus reveals how two disciples encountered the risen Christ without recognizing him. Walking seven miles from Jerusalem after the crucifixion, they were joined by Jesus himself, yet were prevented from seeing who he truly was. Their grief and limited understanding blinded them to his presence. Jesus called them foolish and slow to believe, then explained how all Scripture pointed to him as the Messiah who needed to suffer before entering glory. The pivotal moment came during a meal when Jesus broke bread—suddenly their eyes were opened, and they recognized him before he vanished. Their hearts had been burning within them all along. This powerful resurrection encounter compelled them to immediately return to Jerusalem to share their experience despite the late hour. The name Emmaus itself means 'warmth' or 'burning,' symbolizing their spiritual awakening. This account demonstrates why early Christians believed in the resurrection—these weren't myths but real experiences from people still alive when the Gospels were written. The same resurrection power works in believers today, transforming lives and compelling action. Are you recognizing Jesus in your daily life? What might be preventing you from fully seeing him? Have you experienced that heart-burning moment when Scripture comes alive? The resurrection isn't just historical—it's a present reality that changes everything about how we live and share our faith journey with others.

Jesus began his ministry by inviting disciples to "come and see," but this invitation matured into a call to "go and tell" as he sent out 72 followers to spread the Gospel. Using the metaphor of a plentiful harvest from Luke 10:2, Ken emphasizes that while many people are ready to hear about Jesus, there's a shortage of Christians willing to share their faith. He addresses three main barriers to evangelism—comparison, perceived obstacles, and fear of failure—while encouraging listeners that sharing faith isn't about perfecting a sales pitch but about authentic friendship and conversations, all while depending on Christ's power rather than our own abilities.

Jesus addresses worry in the Sermon on the Mount not as a normal part of life, but as a serious issue that reveals our struggle to trust God completely. Through examples of birds and flowers, Jesus demonstrates that our heavenly Father provides for all His creation, making worry both unhelpful and a sign of distrust in God's goodness. Rather than being consumed by worry about material needs, Jesus calls us to "seek first his kingdom and his righteousness," promising that God will provide what we need when we focus on His purposes for our lives.
Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:19-24 that having "healthy eyes" means cultivating both generosity and single-mindedness in our spiritual vision. Just as we can't physically focus on two things at once, we cannot serve both God and material possessions - we must choose whether our eyes will be full of light (focused on eternal things) or darkness (focused on earthly treasures). The sermon emphasizes that when we seek first God's Kingdom with healthy spiritual vision, maintaining a generous heart and undivided focus on heavenly things, God will provide everything we need.
Jesus Christ is celebrated through eight powerful movements of prayer and worship, moving from praise to mission, each featuring beautiful invocations of His names and attributes. This October 20th service weaves together ancient liturgical traditions with contemporary expressions, creating a deeply meaningful journey through confession, repentance, help, resurrection, thanksgiving, and glory. Each section is anchored in Scripture and led by different prayer leaders, culminating in a call to declare God's glory among all nations.
In this sermon, Ken explores Jesus' teachings from Matthew 6:1-18 about performing righteous acts (giving, praying, fasting) with the right motives, rather than seeking attention or praise from others. He emphasizes the importance of focusing on God as our Father and prioritizing His kingdom over personal agendas, warning against the dangers of becoming "hypocrites" who do good deeds for the wrong reasons. The sermon encourages listeners to cultivate integrity, find security in their identity as children of God, and practice "undercover" acts of service to develop a heart that seeks heavenly rewards rather than temporary earthly recognition.
Ken's sermon explores Jesus' teachings on Kingdom righteousness from Matthew 5:38-48, focusing on how to respond to insults, lawsuits, and enemies with unexpected grace and kindness. He emphasizes that Jesus reinterprets the "eye for an eye" law, encouraging believers to show grace as their first impulse rather than retaliation or resistance. The sermon concludes by linking these teachings to God's perfect love for all people, exemplified ultimately in Christ's sacrifice on the cross.
In this sermon, Ken explores Jesus' command to "watch and pray," introducing the concept of eight prayer watches spanning the day and night. He explains how each watch, based on historical Jewish timekeeping, carries unique spiritual significance and prayer focuses, drawing from biblical events and themes. Ken encourages believers to become spiritual watchmen, offering practical guidance on how to incorporate these prayer watches into daily life and emphasizing the power and importance of consistent, purposeful prayer.
Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, calls his followers to a "Kingdom righteousness" that goes deeper than surface-level obedience, reaching into the heart and transforming our relationships with others. This righteousness surpasses mere legal compliance, addressing root issues like anger, lust, and integrity, while emphasizing reconciliation and truthfulness in all aspects of life. Recognizing the impossibility of achieving this standard through human effort alone, the sermon emphasizes our need for God's grace, which not only covers our failures but empowers us to live out this higher calling.
Discover the profound beauty of Jesus Christ through the lens of the Beatitudes. From the mountaintop to the cross, see how Jesus embodied each blessing, revealing His true beauty in His sacrifice. Ken explores the concept of a broken world, using everyday examples to illustrate how both objects and people fail to function as intended due to sin. He explains that Jesus came to restore this brokenness, introducing the Kingdom of Heaven as a present reality breaking into our world, offering righteousness through faith and action, and embodying the perfect model of an unbroken life. The sermon concludes with a powerful invitation for listeners to embrace Jesus' offer of healing and restoration, challenging them to consider if they're ready to experience life as it was meant to be in God's kingdom.
Ken begins a series on the Sermon on the Mount by drawing a parallel between Jesus' teachings and the Old Testament, emphasizing that Jesus, as the Son of God, was present both at Mount Sinai and during the Sermon on the Mount. He explains that Jesus came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it, writing it on believers' hearts and empowering them through the Holy Spirit to live righteously. The sermon concludes with a challenge to listeners, asking if they want to be disciples of Jesus and follow the path of righteousness outlined in the Sermon on the Mount.

Aaron concludes by challenging the church to invest in reaching and discipling college students, seeing them as future missionaries who can spread the gospel worldwide.
This sermon focuses on the appointment of deacons in the church, drawing parallels between the early Christian church and the present congregation. Ken addresses both the newly chosen deacons and the entire congregation, emphasizing the importance of service, unity, and the use of individual spiritual gifts for the common good. The message culminates with a reading from 1 Corinthians 12, reinforcing the concept of the church as a diverse yet unified body working together under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

In this sermon, Ken explores the profound benefits of generosity as outlined in Philippians 4:19, highlighting six key rewards including earning gratitude, demonstrating true priorities, becoming more Christlike, strengthening faith, investing in eternity, and pleasing God. He emphasizes that generosity breaks the grip of materialism and aligns our hearts with God's nature, encouraging the congregation to be generous not only with money but also with intangible gifts like compassion, forgiveness, and time. Drawing from Paul's letters and other biblical passages, Ken illustrates how God blesses and multiplies the generosity of givers, challenging listeners to cultivate a spirit of cheerful giving in all areas of life.
In this sermon, Ken continues to explore five steps to finding peace based on Philippians 4: refusing to worry, talking to God about everything, thanking God in all things, thinking about good things, and being content with anything. He provides practical advice for implementing these steps in daily life, emphasizing the importance of gratitude, thought control, and contentment regardless of circumstances. The sermon concludes by reminding listeners that they can accomplish these challenging tasks through Christ's strength, offering hope and practical strategies for those seeking greater peace.
In this sermon, Ken explores how to experience God's peace that surpasses understanding, as promised in Philippians 4. He outlines two key steps: refusing to worry about anything and talking to God about everything. Ken emphasizes that by following these practices, believers can reduce stress, increase joy, and experience the profound peace God offers, even in challenging circumstances.
In this sermon on Philippians 3, Shane explores five habits for cultivating lasting joy in Jesus: relaxing in God's grace, getting to know Jesus better, remembering what matters most, practicing patience and persistence, and imitating Christ-filled examples. He emphasizes that true joy comes from a relationship with Jesus rather than material possessions or worldly success. Through personal anecdotes and practical insights, Shane encourages listeners to prioritize knowing and becoming like Jesus in their daily lives, leading to a deeper, more joyful faith.
In this sermon, Ken Holsberry explores two daily habits from Philippians 3 that can increase happiness and joy: relaxing in God's grace and getting to know Jesus better. He contrasts the misery of legalism with the freedom found in God's unconditional love and grace, encouraging listeners to approach God through relationship rather than religious works. Ken also emphasizes the importance of intentionally pursuing a deeper knowledge of Christ as a lifelong journey, using Paul's post-conversion experience as an example.
This is the tenth message in the "Joy" series. It is being presented by Myles Day, one of our 2024 Summer Youth Interns.
This sermon explores five key exercises from Philippians 2:12-18 to cultivate a happy and healthy spiritual heart: remembering God's presence, practicing gratitude, maintaining a clean conscience, memorizing and living out God's Word, and serving others sacrificially. The Ken explains how fear, conflict, guilt, forgetfulness, and self-focus can hinder our happiness, while emphasizing the importance of living with integrity and focusing on others. By incorporating these spiritual practices into our daily lives, the sermon suggests we can find lasting joy and deepen our relationship with God.
In this sermon on Philippians 2:12-13, Ken explains that while we have a role to "work out" our salvation, it is ultimately God working in us. He identifies fear, grumbling/complaining, and arguing as things that hinder us spiritually, and prescribes two spiritual exercises: 1) Remembering daily that God is in you, with you, around you, and for you, and 2) Practicing gratitude instead of grumbling. But first we need Christ to give us a new heart.
In his sermon, Ken explores the path to happiness outlined in Philippians 2, emphasizing that humility leads to harmony, which in turn leads to happiness. He provides four practical steps for cultivating humility: avoiding pride, embracing humbleness, paying attention to others, and asking "What Would Jesus Do?" in every situation. Ken concludes by highlighting Jesus' ultimate example of humility, which includes not demanding rights, serving others, and doing what is right even when painful, and reminds the congregation that God rewards humility with eternal happiness.
Ken explains the biblical origins and role of deacons as servants in the church who assist with practical needs. He walks through the specific process their church uses to nominate, examine, and affirm qualified men to serve as deacons. The primary qualifications are having a good reputation, integrity, faithfulness to one's family, commitment to the faith, and a willingness to serve humbly.
The path to true happiness is through humility and putting others before yourself, not pride and selfishness. This humble path leads to harmony in relationships, which brings real joy - as modeled by Jesus. Following Jesus by repenting of pride and dying to self opens the way to God's blessings and lasting happiness.
On Senior Sunday, Hunter preached from 2 Timothy 2:20-22, encouraging the graduating seniors to flee youthful passions and instead pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, and a community rooted in Christ. Using the metaphor of being honorable vessels or instruments, he urged them to align their lives with God's principles and promises as they transition into this next phase of adulthood. Above all, Hunter reminded them that God has good plans to give them a hopeful future if they wholeheartedly pursue Him.
Even in difficult circumstances like imprisonment, the Apostle Paul remained joyful by trusting God, staying focused on his purpose of serving Christ, and having an eternal perspective. True happiness comes not from self-gratification but from self-sacrifice, anchoring your life fully in Christ. With the right perspective, prayer, the Holy Spirit's help, and faith in God's purposes, you can overcome any pressure or pain and be happy no matter what.
In this sermon titled "How to Be Happy No Matter What (part 1)," Ken discusses how to overcome common "kill-joys" that rob us of joy and happiness. Drawing from Philippians 1:12-30, Ken explains how we can find happiness even amid problems, difficult people, pressure, and pain.
Some key points covered include:
Viewing problems from God's perspective, trusting that He is working everything for our good
Not allowing critical, competitive, or troublemaking people to control our attitudes
Surrounding ourselves with supportive people who build us up
Keeping our focus on Christ rather than toxic influences
The sermon provides practical biblical wisdom on maintaining joy regardless of challenging circumstances. Ken's down-to-earth teaching style makes the message accessible and encouraging.
Jeremy Aaron unpacks Philippians 2:1-8, where Paul urges the Philippians to have unity, love and purpose by humbly considering others as more important than themselves, just as Jesus humbled himself by leaving heaven to serve humanity.
In this sermon, part 2 of a series on relationships and joy, Ken teaches from Philippians 1 on the importance of praying with joy for the people in our lives - even the difficult relationships.
He challenges us not just to complain or gossip about the people who irritate us, but to pray for them with a joyful heart. Ken provides a powerful prayer from Philippians 1:9-11 that we can pray over our relationships:
When we pray these things over our relationships, God can change not just the other person's heart, but our own as well. Rather than taking sides, we align ourselves with God's heart by praying blessings over even our most difficult relationships.
If you want more joyful relationships, put this Biblical advice into practice. Pray with joy over your family, friends, co-workers and even your enemies. As Ken says, "God just might change their heart, I can almost guarantee he'll change yours."
In this sermon, Ken focuses on how developing an attitude of gratitude is key to having happier relationships and a more joyful life. He draws lessons from Philippians 1, where the apostle Paul models gratitude toward the church in Philippi despite being in prison.
Ken emphasizes that happiness doesn't come from changing our circumstances, but from choosing to be grateful for the people in our lives - our spouses, parents, children, coworkers, etc. He challenges us to have "selective memory" by dwelling on the positive aspects of our relationships rather than the negative.
Practical tips are given for cultivating gratitude as a habit, such as praying short prayers of thanks when we think about our loved ones, or asking God to remind us why we love and appreciate them. Ken invites listeners to write down a person or situation they need to be more grateful for and commit to finding reasons for gratitude this week.
The sermon also touches on how God's goal isn't just for us to be happy, but to become holy through life's difficult circumstances. Yet paradoxically, choosing gratitude can lead to greater joy and happier relationships along the way.
Ken Holsberry’s message this Easter Sunday focuses on James the brother of Jesus, who went from skeptic to believer because of the Resurrection. Ken’s message is followed by the dramatic visual of death to life with the Flowering of the Cross.
This powerful sermon examines the prophecy in Isaiah 53 about the suffering Messiah and how it was fulfilled by Jesus on the cross. Ken walks through Isaiah 53 verse-by-verse, showing how it vividly describes Christ's crucifixion hundreds of years before it happened.
But more than just predicting Jesus' death, this passage reveals what He accomplished through His sacrifice. On the cross, Jesus took our punishment and gave us forgiveness, took our wounds and gave us healing, took our sin and gave us His righteousness, took our death and gave us life, took our curse and gave us blessing, took our poverty and gave us abundance, took our rejection and gave us acceptance, and took our shame and gave us glory.
Ken drives home the incredible exchange that happened at Calvary - Jesus took upon Himself everything evil, so that we could receive everything good from God. He then shares from the words of Jesus and Peter how we can participate in this salvation - by believing in Christ and being baptized.
This gospel presentation is a powerful call to embrace all that Jesus purchased for us through His atoning death. You'll never look at Easter the same way after understanding the full scope of what Christ accomplished on the cross according to Isaiah's prophecy.

In this powerful sermon from Ephesians 6, Ken provides very practical and spiritual instruction on how to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. He breaks down each piece of the full armor of God - the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the Spirit, and prayer.
Ken emphasizes that this is not a physical battle against flesh and blood, but a spiritual battle against evil spiritual forces. The only way to withstand the enemy's attacks is to put on the full armor of God and fight in the strength of the Lord, not our own strength.
You'll be equipped with defensive armor like the breastplate of Christ's righteousness to stand against accusations, and offensive weapons like the sword of the Spirit (God's word) and prayer. Ken shares helpful insights on praying at all times in the Spirit's power.
Whether you are facing spiritual attacks or simply want to be prepared to stand firm, this inspiring message will encourage you to daily put on the full armor of God so that you can withstand the evil day and still be standing victorious at the end. Don't go into battle alone - stand together with your church family and the Lord Himself!
In this powerful sermon, Ken dives deep into the biblical instructions for resisting the devil's temptations and winning the spiritual battle. Drawing from James 1:14 and James 4:6-8, he provides a practical 4-step process for actively resisting the enemy:
Ken powerfully illustrates how the devil flees when we follow these biblical steps to resist him in the power and authority given to us through Jesus Christ. Get equipped to stand firm against temptation and live victoriously in spiritual warfare!
In this hard-hitting sermon, Ken Holsberry pulls back the curtain on one of the main battlegrounds of spiritual warfare - our thought lives. He explains that while spiritual warfare is very real, the primary battles take place in our minds and thought patterns.
Ken exposes some of the common ways the enemy establishes "strongholds" in our minds - wrong beliefs and destructive thought patterns that exert tremendous influence over our choices and behaviors. These include lies from the enemy, temptations, childhood wounds, and traumatic experiences.
Learn the tell-tale signs that the enemy has established strongholds in your thought life. Ken also outlines practical strategies for spiritual warfare that help demolish those strongholds. These include confessing sins, taking personal responsibility for your life, capturing thoughts through assertiveness, renewing your mind in Scripture, and relying on the Holy Spirit.
This sermon will equip you to identify enemy strongholds in your thought life and break free from their influence through God's power at work in you! Come learn how to defeat the enemy's lies and live in the freedom for which Christ has set you free.
This message by Ken Holsberry was presented on Sunday, February 25, 2024. This is the sixth message in the "How to Protect Your Family Against Spiritual Attacks" series.
Ken Holsberry preached about the story in John 11 where Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. He focuses on Jesus' command at the end to "take off the grave clothes and let him go." Even though Lazarus was raised to life, he was still bound in the wrappings of death. In the same way, Christians can be made spiritually alive in Christ but still be wrapped up and bound by the grave clothes of their sin. This keeps them from fully walking with God, worshiping him freely, serving others effectively, hearing God's voice clearly, seeing God at work around them, speaking God's truth boldly, and understanding spiritual things.
Holsberry cautions that you can't take these grave clothes off by yourself - you need help from mature believers who have gone through this process. He then points to Colossians 3 which lists virtues like compassion, patience and love that believers should "put on", connecting them to the fruit of the Spirit. He notes we can't manufacture these qualities through our effort, so the habit we really need is abiding in Christ. As we stick close to Jesus, he will produce his character in us and we'll be clothed with him rather than sin.
In closing, Holsberry challenges listeners identify what "grave clothes" they need to let go of, who can help them in that process, and commits to clothing themselves in Christ through abiding in him in every area of life. He prays that God would empower believers by his Spirit to experience the depth of his love, be filled with his fullness, and accomplish great things for his glory.
