Salvation is God’s gift of grace, not earned through good works. Before experiencing God’s grace we were dead in our sins, however, God’s love and mercy made us alive in Christ. We are God’s masterpiece, created to do good works in Christ Jesus, which God prepared in advance for us. We have a purpose ordained by God that we can choose to walk in, not to earn salvation, but as a result of being saved by grace.

This message challenges us to return to our 'first love' - the passion and devotion we had when we first came to faith in Jesus. Using the words of Jesus to the church in Ephesus in Revelation 2, we are reminded how easy it is to lose our zeal over time, going through religious motions while our hearts drift away from true intimacy with God. The solution Jesus gives is to remember how far God has brought us, repent of anything drawing us away from Him, and redo the spiritual practices that kept us close to God at first. Ultimately, returning to our first love is vital not just for our own souls, but for the spiritual vitality and influence of the entire church. When we rekindle the fire of our faith, revival becomes possible.

We are reminded that as followers of Christ, our ultimate goal should be to love like Jesus, even amidst the divisiveness and challenges of an election year. While we may hold different political views, our shared faith in Christ should unite us and shape our interactions with others. By recognizing that both anger and fear are often used as political tools, we can instead choose to anchor ourselves in the confidence and peace that comes from trusting in God's sovereignty. We are encouraged to stay aware of how our politics are shaping us spiritually and actively seek to be formed in the image of Christ, using our political involvement as a means to demonstrate His love to the world.

Look in Christian bookstores at books on marriage and parenting – compare that with books on singleness – very few marriage books argue that marriage is a good thing – that’s accepted. Instead, they talk about all the problems in marriage and how to deal with them. Christian marriage books tell you how to deal with the difficulty of marriage. Books on singleness take a different approach. They almost imply that singleness is a problem. They tell a person how to make the most of the time until the right person comes along. In other words, they say that the solution to the problem of singleness is marriage. And then – “Good news – once you get married, you’re going to have all other kinds of problems and read the marriage books.” The scriptures teach something very different ...

The idea that all religions are equally correct is called “religious relativism”. That all positions are equally correct, and therefore, we shouldn’t evangelize. If you believe some religions are superior to others, then you have to evangelize. But if you believe that no religions are superior to others then you are evangelizing your religious relativism view. Think of it like this; when you urge me not to urge my religion on anybody else, you’re urging your religion on me. You’re evangelizing me not to evangelize. You are doing the very thing you forbid. Up until 150 years ago, all religions got together and said, “Look, we may all be wrong, but we can’t all be right.” If two people contradict one another we say, “You could be wrong and I could be right, or I could be wrong and you could be right, or we could both be wrong, but we can’t both be right.” So the real question is who’s right?

It’s not difficult to get a person interested in the message of the gospel, it is difficult to sustain the interest. Millions of people make decisions for Christ, but there is a dreadful attrition rate. In the words of Eugene Peterson, “Many claim to have been born again, but the evidence of mature Christian discipleship is slim.” In the western church there is a great market for religious experience but there is little enthusiasm for the patient acquisition of Christian character. Little inclination to sign up for a long apprenticeship in what earlier generations of Christians called Sanctification; the process of becoming like Christ. This process involves learning how to implement healthy spiritual habits. But what stands in our way? That’s what this teaching will discuss.

Every relationship forms you. The relationships you say “yes” to, and the relationships you say “no” to will both form you in one way or another. These relationships either wound you on the “operating table” or on the “battle field”. The operating table scenario heals, while the battle field scenario ultimately dominates. We need to want relationships that put us on the “operating table.” Who are you allowing to form you?
We often think Jesus was 50% grace, and 50% truth. But, in reality he was 100% of both. Both the attractional and formational aspects of Jesus’ ministry worked hand in hand.
At Ethos we desire to be the same – creating environments where people can come and see, while also be seen. Where all guests who arrive are received like Christ, and where we can be formed into the vision of Jesus.

Living a life faithfully following Jesus, means acknowledging God’s purpose, plan, perspective, and presence whether in a season of pain or a season of ease. During seasons of pain, it means not letting the storm cloud your vision and remembering that Jesus is in the boat with you. In seasons of ease, it means keeping in front of you the truth that you cannot do this alone and that no matter how good life is right now, it is due to God continually at work on your behalf. Ultimately, faithfully following Jesus means modeling after what Jesus did and how he lived in those same seasons.

Right now we are in a “Josiah like moment”. Josiah had every reason to not turn towards God, but something rose in him at the proclamation of God’s word that made him reform; made him change.
God had given us each the opportunity to reform our legacy and our family.

Generations after Israel had been freed from Egyptian slavery, they were hauled off into exile in Babylon, a secular country. In the book of Jeremiah, we see that Gods call to Israel was to retain their foundational identity as Gods people even though they were resident aliens in a foreign land. Despite their status as exiles .. God tells them to stay put. Put down roots, build houses, plant gardens … We too are spiritual exiles and resident aliens. We live here but we don’t really belong here. So how do we live faithfully in the space between, not running from the world and not conforming to it but faithfully following Jesus with two feet in both worlds?

It is not hard to see why Christians would shy away from sin and judgement in our attempts to engage constructively in the debates and questions of our age. Our culture attacks sin and judgement as hate speech, leaving Christians confused, embarrassed and in denial about foundational biblical truths. We are told that doctrines of sin and judgement are not just misguided but downright dangerous or evil. But we agree with Fleming Rutledge who wrote, “It is only by endeavoring to look sin straight in the face that we are able to understand grace.”

Neuroscience tells us - the human mind can actually resist truth about oneself. This phenomenon is called mutual pretense in the medical field. Everybody desperately needs to be covered - desperately wants to be covered - has to be covered, to keep people from seeing who we really are. What Adam & Eve used as fig leaves in Genesis 3, we use as social media, larger homes, smiling families, and education today. Anything to create a veneer on the outside that covers the shame and guilt we fear when we are exposed. While the natural mind may be hostile to truth, the spiritual person is called to turn toward it all costs. This is called repentance or confession. This is one of the first things Jesus begins to preach …

We oftentimes ask ourselves, if God is so good why is there so
much pain in this world. But the reality is, that Jesus’ promise of peace does not guarantee the absence of trouble or pain. Rather we are called to understand that life offers both still waters and valleys of death (Psalm 23). And in that, holding on to the truth that God is the connection point within those two places. And valuing God’s presence over provision, knowing that He is with us, that is what God is good at.

Does anybody enjoy ‘waiting’? Red lights, long lines, commercials & ads during your favorite TV show or sports team, slow service at a restaurant. These are all a bit trivial in the grand scheme of life. But what about waiting on unanswered prayer, or a bad habit to finally be defeated, or a spouse, job, health? We don’t have a theology for waiting well. We certainly have an unhealthy and unbiblical theology for wanting everything now.
Isaiah 30:18 (NIV) tells us; “So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help.” How do we learn to ‘wait well’?

In “Celebration of Discipline”, Richard Foster wrote, “God takes this ‘useless’ discipline, this ‘wasted time’, to make us His friend.” When we are quiet enough to hear God’s affirming voice, it becomes much easier not to fall under the spell of the opinions of others. The primary purpose of solitude is simply to be more present to God. In solitude we discover that the one who made us and loves us most wants to be our friend. He is the prize.

Practice > ‘New Year’s Resolution Spirituality'
When we think about the good news of Jesus, two approaches in the form of a question come to mind. There are two contrasting questions that form our shift today from making converts to making disciples.
Question 1: In a ‘Conversion Centered Gospel’ one might ask “If you were to die tonight, would you go to heaven?” Question 2: In a disciple centered gospel one might ask “If you knew you were going to live forever, what kind of person would you like to become?”
The second question focuses on a process of growing toward Christlikeness. One question is just concerned with getting us to heaven. The other is concerned with who I am right now and who I am becoming. This is what we call discipleship or spiritual formation which is the development of a heart for God.

LOVE
When Mary finds out that she is pregnant, she goes to spend her first trimester with her elderly cousin Elizabeth who is in her last trimester. It is likely they are both, given their ages, in the midst of the most challenging parts of their respective pregnancies. It is from this place that they enter into community. We might expect Elizabeth, who has waited her whole life for a child, might approach her cousin with scorn, jealousy, suspicion, or a spirit of competition. But not so. When Mary arrives, Elizabeth literally cries out loudly to bless Mary and the thing that God is doing in her. These women, absent the voices of men in their lives, have a holy moment of honoring the thing that God is doing in both of them. This is an opportunity for them to share their stories, believe each other, and be together. This community between the women is a gift from God to them for their health, their joy, and their belief in what God is doing in them. Our spirituality may be tied up in finding God in specific ways – reading the bible, praying, and going to church. We have been taught a lie that all things spiritual happen separate from community. But one of the greatest “joy gifts” in your life are the people who make you think, laugh, and celebrate your life with you.

The Kingdom of Heaven Among Us
It is not up to us to build the kingdom, but we can build for the kingdom. As resurrection people who know that heaven and earth overlap, we can become agents of God’s beauty in a world that needs a song, a beautiful painting, a new dance, or a heart-touching poem. We can also stand for justice in a world where injustice seems to have a vise grip on so many people.
The resurrection of Jesus does not move us to a passive and sedentary life of waiting for God to show up some day in the dis- tant future. The hope of the resurrection inspires and empowers Christians to stand strong, work hard, pray more fervently, and live with compassion. As the power of the resurrection fills our hearts, homes, and churches, we stand firm, we let nothing move us, we always give ourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because we know our labor is not in vain!
Luke 17:20-21 (NIV)- One day the Pharisees asked Jesus, “When will the Kingdom of God come?” Jesus replied, “The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs. You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already among you.”

Paradise, Heaven, Resurrection, & Rapture
Heaven will not be a boring place, off in distant space, where we play harps, sit on clouds, and sing the same stanza of the same song forever. Heaven is God’s space, filled with peace, justice, and beauty. Heaven and earth are overlapping realities, and the resurrection of Jesus has connected these two spheres more closely than we know. If we pay close attention, we will see that heaven and earth are overlapping today. One of the ways God brings his kingdom, “on earth as it is in heaven,” is through his people.

Christians have a hope that enables us to face anything. There’s an “unsinkableness” about us. There’s a stubborn buoyancy about us. You sink a Christian and they keep coming back up. No matter how much of the world seems to be on top of them. This is not the same as optimism. As a matter of fact, Christians have a hope that enables them to stop denying how much life stinks. There’s a tremendous amount of dysfunction that occurs because we just can’t bear to admit how horrible life is - how painful it is. Yet, biblical hope enables us to be more fiercely realistic than anybody else yet still joyfully consumed. The Apostle Paul says the reason we have this hope is because of the defeat of death.

Teaching. Maturity. Spiritual Circumcision
The apostle Paul writes in Colossians 1:28, “So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ.” Paul establishes that his goal for preaching and teaching is to “present everyone perfect in Christ.” The Greek idea of perfection as something without a flaw has influenced our understanding of the term in today. Consequently, for most, perfection is some impossible ideal that no one will ever attain. But the biblical vision is something was “perfect” if it’s contributing to its purpose. That what we’re after here, contributing to the purpose God created us for.

The Awe and Supremacy of Jesus Christ
In Colossians 1, we read how Christ is the image of God. And we are called to recognize Jesus as not only the Lord of Creation but also the head of the Church who is guiding us in our journey of faith. We are reminded of Jesus’ sacrifice of dying on the cross for us and how this is a beautiful act of reconciliation and an act of bringing peace between us and God. As we read Colossians 1, we are drawn to centering our lives on Christ and acknowledging His power and authority over our lives.

The church has often pursued relevance at the expense of reverence. However, the church was meant to be a counterculture, where “life to the full” is visible and welcomed to all.

A commitment to pursuing holiness – only made possible through the blood of Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit – is a critical mark of the countercultural church.

Barriers and Bridges to True Community

Why Go to Church?
At some point along the way, we have trained Christians to be demanding consumers, not disciples. Do we really just go to church for our own benefits? Doesn’t doing so merely perpetuate the consumerist culture that has caused so many to abandon church? There must be far more beautiful and deeply meaningful rationale for going to church beyond what we can get. Right? Within the present anti-church climate, we must attempt to answer, “Why go to church?” What do you tell your friends or perhaps your parents or children who no longer go but wonder why you do? What is being proposed is not a series of reasons why you might want to go to church but why you should go to church. That’s not a bad thing … an old philosophical dictum suggests that love follows knowledge, the heart needs a vision … So what can be a vision, a reason for going to church and committing ourselves to a group of very flawed men and women and agreeing to journey with them for the rest of our lives?
Romans 12:2 (NLT) - Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Not As Easy As We Hope. More Important Than We Thought
We desperately need to recapture the communal aspect of historic Christianity. There is an entire generation deconstructing their beliefs not because those beliefs are wrong but because they never saw those beliefs actually done in a loving community of commitment and sacrifice. What we believe is not our witness to the world, it’s how we live among one another that is our witness to the world. The church was not founded to critique the surrounding culture but to form a distinct counterculture where “life to the full” is on display as an invitation to all. However, in many ways the church has mirrored the culture more than forming a counterculture.
Matthew 16:15-18 (NLT) - Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

When the Holy Spirit Invades the Hearts of His People
Have you ever noticed that the greatest demonstration of the Spirit of God which was also the moment that launched the Christian church, happened not while someone was preaching, but while people were praying? What does it say about the church today that the Spirit came, and that God birthed the church in a prayer meeting, and prayer meetings today are almost extinct? What do you think will happen if you begin to pray that God will reveal his power in your life and lead you toward people whom he wants you to love?

What stands in Our Way of More?
How did Jesus do everything that Jesus did? There are two dominant theories that exist to answer that question, neither are entirely inaccurate, but one of them is most clear: by the power of the Holy Spirit. Before the Holy Spirit rested upon Jesus after His water baptism, Jesus did not do much. However, after he was anointed with the Holy Spirit, He was teaching with authority, working miracles, building disciples, and bringing Heaven to Earth. Here is some more good news; the same Holy Spirit that empowered Jesus wants to empower you. Martin Lloyd Jones said, “If we have what the first Christians had, why do we not do what they did? We must conclude that either God gave them more than He has given us, or we have failed to avail ourselves of what He has given us.” Let’s continue to lean in together.

The Limit of Powerlessness, the Gift of Turbulence
Following Jesus sounds great in theory, but obedience is scary. We only discover how we’re going to do what Jesus calls us to do after stepping out in obedience. That seems backwards. But when we focus on Jesus – the one calling us to obey – it gets easier because we learn to take comfort in Him.
Matthew 14:28-29 (NIV) - “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus."

The Limit of Fear, the Gift of Faith
It is safe to say that we all experience emotional fears that grip us, and that have the ability to limit our yes to God. Fear is not an uncommon or an unnatural emotion in life, and God knew that we would feel it. He tells his people, us, throughout the Bible, “Do not be afraid.” He already knew that we would feel this emotion, and He promised to come alongside us to strengthen us and to help us fight and overcome fear. In that fight against fear, however, we are called to be faithful to His promises and to cling His sovereignty. So that we can look fear in the face and say ‘yes’ to God. And as a result, we get to step into God’s call and purpose for us.
Isaiah 41:10 (NLT) - "Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand."

Outline of the Gospel
Most people miss the voice of God not because it’s too strange but because it’s so familiar. “Why is it,” comedian Lily Tomlin asks, “that when we speak to God, we are said to be praying but when God speaks to us, we are said to be schizophrenic?” Dallas Willard wrote, “Such a response from ourselves or others to someone’s claim to have heard from God is especially likely today because of the lack of specific teaching and pastoral guidance on such matters.”

The Limit of Time, the Gift of No.
If you want to build margin in your life so that you can do the work God meant for you to do, you have to remember that you are only human. You have limits. Psalm 119:96 says, “I have learned that everything has limits” (GNT). God is the author of your limitations. He put them there for your good—because he loves you. So rather than fighting your limits, you need to accept your limits. Sadly, as human beings we’re not very adept at recognizing our limits. We constantly overestimate our abilities and underestimate obstacles and how much time it will take to do something. On top of that, we live in a culture that constantly tells us, “You can do it all! You can have it all! You can be whatever you want!” But it’s not true. You can be all that God wants you to be, but you cannot be whatever you want to be. There are limits in your life.
Romans 12:3,6 - Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. 6 In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.

The Limit of Self Knowledge, the Gift of the Bible
If you’re going to have a personal relationship with Jesus, if your religion is personal, you have to be utterly obedient to Him. Jesus says that it’s in obedience where we find freedom … Not freedom to do what we feel, or freedom from the pain of the world, but freedom to experience life as it were meant to be lived … with Jesus. The reason we’re freed by obedience and allegiance to Jesus is because we’re obeying the will of our Designer. We no longer carry the weight of trying to figure out life on our own.
Matthew 11:28-29 (NLT) - "Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

The Limit of Autonomy. The Gift of Freedom
Freedom is not the ability to do anything you want – it is the ability to accept your limits, to say no to that which robs you of what you most deeply desire. Almost everyone agrees (Christians and non-Christians) freedom is the fulfillment that comes from doing what you most deeply desire. The Bible says that only happens when you are willing to be completely dependent on God. “I will obey You and Your Word and not all of my contradictory, conflicting impulses. I will do what You say, and I know, then, I’ll find myself because I was built to obey You.” The essence of Freedom is not dos and don’ts but personal allegiance to a relationship with Jesus.

Spiritually Healthy Community
Healthy community was something that Jesus prayed for us, His future Church, to have and to be a part of. Just as He had with His Father and the Spirit. Because of this prayer, healthy community is available to us by way of the Holy Spirit, and we get to operate in it today, if we choose to. Spiritually healthy community takes work and is not easy. It calls us to be honest, broken, and vulnerable; giving space for the Spirit to work in and for us. However, in the same breath, we are called to be a safe space that responds in love to those who come to us and require us to be a safe space for them.

The Opportunity to do Good
In Galatians 6, Paul calls us to share each other’s burdens and by doing so we obey the law of Christ. Loving people in theory is easy and beautiful but, in reality, is harsh and dreadful. If we want to be a community that lives out Paul’s call in Galatians, we must learn how to handle our own burdens. We also must recognize that our life is often too hurried to notice the burdens of people around us. Lastly, when we recognize that the things we possess are not that important, and the role that God asks us to play is not too small; then we can truly begin to put ourselves in places to carry burdens of others well.

How the Gospel Builds a Healthy Multi-Ethnic Family
By the time we get to the fourth chapter of Galatians, we’ve reached the climax of everything that Paul has said so far. In fact, we have reached the climax of the Gospel. Sinclair Ferguson wrote, “The notion that we are the children of God, His own sons and daughters, is the mainspring of Christian living. Our sonship to God is the apex of creation and the goal of redemption.” If we want to understand who a Christian is, and why being a Christian is a privilege, we need to appreciate divine adoption.

God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. The Gift of the Father
We have a hard time receiving grace because we live in a, “you get what you deserve world.” We think if we are good, God will be good to us. Without realizing it, we begin to believe our performance dictates how God feels about us. However, if we could make ourselves right with God or obey Him enough to deserve His kindness, Jesus would have died for nothing. By taking our eyes off ourselves and putting them onto Jesus, we will be free from shame, and will begin to understand the love of our Father.

Outline of the Gospel
It is very common in Christian circles to assume that “the Gospel” is something mainly for non-Christians. We see it as a set of basic “ABC” doctrines that are the way in which someone enters the Kingdom of God. We often assume that once we are converted, we don’t need to hear or study the gospel – we need more “advanced” material. But in this short letter to the churches in Galatia, the Apostle Paul outlines the bombshell truth that the gospel is the A to Z of the Christian life. It is not only the way to enter the Kingdom, it is the way to live as part of the Kingdom. It is the way Christ transforms people, churches, and communities.

Training Your Mind
Our mind, when left unattended, is being trained by the world whether we realize it or not. Everything we see, hear, and experience is training us to think a certain way; “This is how I should look”, “This is what success looks like”, “This is what will make me happy”. And the more we consume the content we are engaging in, whether healthy or unhealthy, the more we will create deeper neural pathways in our brain to continue to believe the thoughts we are believing. In Romans 12:2, the Apostle Paul gives us the solution to creating new, consistently truthful, and healthy neural pathways. It is what Paul calls “renewing your mind”. It is in the process of renewing our minds that we experience what Thomas A. Kempis called, “…a family friendship with Jesus.” That is what we are after together.

I Have a Choice
In modern psychology a discipline has developed called cognitive behavior therapy. It teaches that many problems from eating disorders to relational challenges, addictions, and even some forms of depression and anxiety are rooted in faulty and negative patterns of thinking. Treating these problems begins with changing what you think. Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” In other words, how we think, shapes our lives. Both science and scripture teach us that our lives are moving in the direction of our strongest thoughts. That is why this is so important.

The Heart of Our Habits That Matter Most
Obedience is central to Jesus’ form of discipleship, as it was to other forms of discipleship within Judaism. But Jesus calls his followers to adhere to the motive behind obedience to God, not simply to carry out external compliance. Motives. Why do we do the good things that we do.

How Change Happens
92% of New Year’s resolutions fail by Valentine’s Day. 97% fail before the end of the year. You know that by now. But the desire to change, reset, make progress, and grow cannot be broken. We all desire to “get better”. There is something in the heart of humanity that wants another shot, to try again. But have you ever wondered, “Why don’t I do what I really want to do?” Well, you are not the only one. How do we change? That is what we are talking about in this teaching.

The Habit of Becoming
It is not difficult to get a person interested in the message of the gospel, it is however, difficult to sustain the interest. Millions of people make decisions for Christ, but there is a dreadful attrition rate. In the words of Eugene Peterson, “Many claim to have been born again, but the evidence of mature Christian discipleship is slim.” In the Western Church there is a great market for religious experience but there is little enthusiasm for the patient acquisition of Christian character. Little inclination to sign up for a long apprenticeship in what earlier generations of Christians called Sanctification; the process of becoming like Christ. This process involves learning how to implement healthy spiritual habits. But what stands in our way? That is what this teaching will discuss.

Week 4 Advent // Love
The work of advent is to believe that God loves the world enough to rescue it from oppression, evil, violence, and death. Many of us have been taught this in concept, and then heard Bible stories used to reinforce that the way God works is always – if there is enough faith or will – dramatic and immediate. We are taught to have faith and wait. But if you really have enough faith, we are told that you will see God move. This, while not ill intentioned, has convinced many of us that the everyday things of our lives are not spiritual enough to count as God “moving”. We may begin to believe that God is not with or for us in the less extraordinary moments of life. This idea has convinced us that our prayers are not spiritual or fervent enough, and that our spiritual activity is not up to par. It has told us that we are not enough because if we were, God would come. The “God-with-us” narrative of advent turns this on its head. The coming of Jesus is much more about a movement than a single spectacular moment. It is about everyday things converging with the divine to make it all sacred and holy. This is a way that God loves us. Allowing ourselves to be immersed in a story where God is making everything, every moment, every bit of growth and change, sacred.

Week 3 Advent // Joy
Read: Luke 1:39-55
When Mary finds out that she is pregnant, she goes to spend her first trimester with her elderly cousin, Elizabeth, who is in her last trimester. It is likely they are both, given their ages, in the midst of the most challenging parts of their respective pregnancies. It is from this place that they enter into community with one another. We might expect Elizabeth, who has waited her whole life for a child, might approach her cousin with scorn, jealousy, suspicion, or a spirit of competition. But not so. When Mary arrives, Elizabeth literally cries out loudly to bless Mary and the thing that God is doing in her. These women, absent the voices of men in their lives, have a holy moment of honoring the thing that God is doing in both of them. This is an opportunity for them to share their stories, believe with each other, and be together. This community between the women is a gift from God to them for their health, their joy, and their belief in what God is doing in them. Our spirituality may be tied up in finding God in specific ways – reading the Bible, praying, and going to Church. We have been taught a lie that all things spiritual happen separate from community. But one of the greatest “joy gifts” in your life are the people who make you think, laugh, and celebrate your life with you.

Read: Psalm 4
The consumerism, romanticism, and hallmark-ness of our Christmas season can often leave us feeling less than fulfilled. We, in light of the “season”, often force ourselves to live outside of the present realties in favor of performing a merry or joyful Christmas. This does violence to our souls. It prevents us from moving through pain in favor of moving around it. As we disconnect from ourselves, whether by platitudes or coping mechanisms, we reinforce the need to perform a “spirit of Christmas.” The advent is an invitation to be real and human. It is an invitation to feel the full range of complex and conflicting feelings that may come and, in moving through them, discover a peace that goes deeper than anything we can manufacture. The advent is an invitation to be real and human. As Jesus comes, he does not erase the stories of our past, nor does he immediately reveal where everything is going. Instead, he invites us to hold onto an everlasting peace found only in him. An invitation to live as though a better and good world is yet to come, even when all hope seems silent. Jesus wants to give you peace, but it only comes when you journey with him through the emotions and struggles that are robbing you of peace.

Week 1 Advent // Hope
Read: Luke 1:28 - 38
On the first week of Advent, we wait AND we prepare. We wait for the world to be as God intends it, the world as it should be. We wait for a world free of injustice, pain, and suffering. But it is not enough to simply wait, we must also prepare. Preparation goes beyond dreaming and invites us to participate in building a better world. As we wait and prepare, we look ahead to the hope of a better world that comes because of our partnership with God, not in spite of it. This preparation is a holy act of hope. In a culture obsessed with power, control, and immediate change, hope can seem inefficient and risky. Strategy dominates dreaming, cynicism dominates imagination, and what has been overshadows what could be. Unfortunately, hope cannot be manufactured out of thin air. It must be chosen and cultivated. When we choose hope, we choose vulnerability, risk, and the possibility of disappointment. We hold tension as we expect things beyond our present moment. This type of hope coupled with courage is the fulcrum to change. We look back to Mary, the mother of Jesus, to find an example of this combination of courage and hope. In the Advent, Jesus has a human body to come through because a courageous young woman believes in God’s justice enough to courageously say yes to what seemed impossible.

Becoming a Community of Love
Jesus was so brilliant…He could have made the defining characteristic of His followers anything He saw fit. He could have said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you believe something.” But instead, He said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you do something. If you love as I have loved.” The brilliance of this statement is found in our own personal experience. Let me put it this way; there are two categories of people who have made a significant impact/difference in your life. There are two categories of people who have made you the husband you are today, the father or mother you are today, the employee you are today. There are two categories of people who have set you up to be successful or not so successful in your relationships or dating relationships. These two categories of people did not impact you because of what they believe, it was not even whether they were Christian or not. It is those who have hurt you deeply or those who have loved you profoundly. Jesus has called and equipped us to become the latter.

Irresistible Christianity
What would happen in the Church and ultimately the world, if we oriented our lives, our marriages, friendships, finances, and time, around this inescapably simple but all-encompassing question…what does love require of me? Maybe we would stop searching the scriptures for loopholes and we would begin searching the scriptures in pursuit of ways to love better.
- Youth groups and student ministries would be characterized by honor and mutual respect.
- Families would live on budgets so they could give more away.
- Marriages would model servant leadership at its finest.
- While folks outside of faith communities may be critical of what we believe they would be envious of how well we treat one another and be stunned by how well we treat them even when we disagree with them.
That would be Irresistible Christianity. That is what we are after today. And that requires three things: loyal friendships, sacrificial commitments, and generous partnerships.

Pursuing Truth in a Culture of Personal Freedom
Jesus could have come as many different things; a priest, a revolutionary, maybe a general or emperor but He came as a rabbi, a teacher…a truth teller. Why? He knew that the war He was fighting was not in the world, but rather in our minds. A war on truth. John 8:31-32 records that, “Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” As He is teaching about truth, He is simultaneously saying that we are enslaved to false ideas of freedom by looking for truth in the wrong places. We are in bondage to the tyranny of lies that hold our soul’s captive to suffering and pain. Jesus has come to set us free with the weapon of truth. And God’s concept of freedom always occurs within obedience to God’s ways

As Christians, we often treat science like the awkward relative at a holiday dinner; it’s easier to ignore than it is to engage. But ignorance is a poor apologetic. Atheists treat faith as the enemy to science and Christians often treat science as the enemy of faith. However, faith and the Bible are not at war with science. Science tells us what the world is like, and Christianity tells us what the world means. We must deconstruct the myth that science and faith are at war. Almost every criticism that comes up; whether the Bible teaches the Earth is 6,000 years old or how to make sense of the earth being created on day one and the sun on day four, is a question the Bible was never trying to answer.

If you have been feeling that our culture is rapidly changing in some unique ways, you are right. We are living in a time of unprecedented deconstruction. In face of this temptation and moment, the invitation of Jesus remains the same, “follow Me”. With our doubts, insecurities, and questions, we resist the urge to settle in deconstruction and walk into a deeper faith, a reconstructed faith.

God’s Vision for the Church
Some of the most highlighted, googled, and quoted Bible verses are found in the fourth chapter of Philippians. But these verses are not trite scriptures reserved for wall hangings and sentimental prayers. They are clues for how to thrive in our faith and furthermore, a picture of what Gods people, the Church, is to look like. Needless to say, Philippians chapter four is loaded, almost too loaded, to practice on our own. That is why we need one another.

Joy No Matter What
Life never seems to go the way we imagine it will in our heads. No matter the effort we put into preparing our day-to-day lives, unforeseen circumstances can leave us feeling frustrated and losing our joy. Many of us have believed the lie that Christians won’t have troubles. But Jesus tells us plainly in John 16:33, “...In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” We will have problems. The question is, what will we do when we face obstacles? Will we continue to pursue Christ and joy no matter what? Paul writes that we are to have the same mindset as Jesus. Jesus didn’t deserve the pain He endured, yet He never once protested. Jesus came to bring people to His Father. When He left, He challenged us to do the same. As we choose to humble ourselves, live in a place of joy, all while taking on an attitude of gratitude; we point people toward our Father.

Love Without Alignment
It is easier to only love people we agree with, but we must remember that joyful Christ-centered communities are diverse and therefor accepting of all people. Jesus lived His life with people that did not think, talk, act, or believe like Him yet was able to draw in the sinner, as well build up disciples. Agreeing is not the goal, rather loving and being united is. Through the life of Jesus, we see His connection to the Father, the power through the Spirit, and His humility being the reason He was so affective at loving all people. Let us not just worship Jesus as our sacrifice but also follow His life as an example of how to love each other amid differences and disagreement.
“Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are you hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Redefining Life
In the book of Philippians, the author, Paul, reveals the secrets of the art of living a life of flourishing. The truths of his letter also have the power to speak directly into our current cultural moment, where many people are languishing somewhere in between depression and flourishing. To know, be Known, & to Be Led by The Holy Spirit
We ended last week by identifying that the Holy Spirit gives everyone at least one spiritual gift. It’s equally important to know that no gift is an indication of spiritual maturity. The fruit of the Spirit manifesting in love is the measure of spiritual maturity. William Barclay said, “The important issue is not how many gifts I have, but is my life like Christ’s and am I attracting people to Him?” How do we ensure our lives are attracting people to Jesus? It begins by knowing and understanding that we are known by the Holy Spirit. This is where everything good about life begins. Have you ever thought about what it means to be known? It is pretty cool to pause, and picture God saying, “(Insert your name here), I know him/her. They are my son/daughter. I love him/her.” Are you confident this is what God would say about you? This is where we begin today because this is the beginning of being led by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit Working Through Us
How did Jesus do everything that Jesus did? There are two dominant theories that exist to answer that question, and neither are entirely inaccurate but one of them is most clear. He did it by the power of the Holy Spirit. Before the Holy Spirit rested upon Jesus after His water baptism, Jesus did not do much. However, after he was anointed with the Holy Spirit; He was teaching with authority, working miracles, building disciples, and bringing Heaven to Earth. Here is more good news; the same Holy Spirit that empowered Jesus wants to empower you. Martin Lloyd Jones said, “If we have what the first Christians had, why do we not do what they did? We must conclude that either God gave them more than He has given us, or we have failed to avail ourselves of what He has given us.” Let’s continue to avail ourselves to all that God has made available to us.

Another, Like Jesus
How can you be sure that you are going to receive all the things the Holy Spirit gives? The community he gives you, the illumination he gives you, the experience he gives you, but most of all, the ministry of the Holy Spirit as a friend inside your heart, working against the various enemies your heart has … accusation, temptation, all the things. Do you know how you can receive it? If you want the ministry of the second Advocate (Holy Spirit), you have to believe in the ministry of the first Advocate (Jesus).

A Person to Know, not a Force to Capture
We begin our knowing of the Holy Spirit by first understanding the teaching of the Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We need to understand that they are not three gods; rather they are one God, but who are all individually distinct. It is not like there is one person who sometimes has his Father hat on, sometimes his Son hat, and sometimes his Holy Spirit hat. There is not one God and one person, nor are three gods and three persons. There is simply one God within three persons, and they know each other. In one sense, Jesus can leave, and the Holy Spirit can come. But in another sense, since they are so one, when you get the one you get them all. And when Jesus left, the Holy Spirit came so that we may continue the ministry (service) of Jesus today.

A generous heart does not look to give the bare minimum or simply what is needed but to go above and beyond. Often we settle for what is good instead of what is great. However, the life of Jesus calls us to consider not that which is good, or which is great, but to live for what is God. Jesus shows us how to live with the privilege of generosity. He was generous with His time, reputation, rights, and His friendship. It was the generosity of Jesus that caused people like Zacchaeus to leave everything behind and experience the love of God, and so it should be ours. The privilege of the people of Ethos is to be a generous people to give more than is expected and allow our generosity to shine a light on the God that gave us more than was expected.

The crushing, emotional blows of disappointment are exacerbated when you are disappointed by someone who you trust and expect to give you what you want. Especially when that someone is God. When it feels like God let you down, holding on to anger and resentment is easier than forgiving Him. But God hasn’t forgotten you. He understands your pain. He is not intimidated by your doubt or disappoint. God would rather you learn how to yell at Him in disappointment and pain than walk away from Him in silent defeat. As a community, lets learn how to move forward from our disappointments with God.

Our world is pushing us into the margins of ideology, political positions, and creating an anxiety that is too much. The apostle Paul gives us a vision that is beyond the noise of this world. A vision of good news, a vision of unity, and a vision to work out our humanness in a way that sees past people’s position to see a person’s humanity.

Over the past few weeks, we have been unpacking God’s vision for everything that has been entrusted to us so that we may become more like Jesus in generosity and stewardship. As we conclude our series, we need to remember three overarching truths that are near to the heart of God and at the core of why Ethos exists. People matter, God is bigger, and prayer is powerful. Stewardship is more than just budgeting well and giving generously, it also involves remembering these three truths.

Many of us constantly battle with trying to live up to the expectations of others. Or trying to live up to your own unrealistic expectations which is emotionally painful. Many of us experience pain and keep it hidden or run from it altogether. But nothing is wasted on God. Even in seasons of pain, God is still near and wants to use it for a greater good. In this teaching, we will identify the problem of pain, the process of pain, the purpose of pain, and God’s provision in pain.

Generosity without stewardship is irresponsible. Stewardship without generosity is selfish. God’s heart is that we grow to become a generous giver and a wise steward because what we do with our money is evidence of what’s most important to us. Many times, we give money in response to a felt need or in response to a tragedy—it’s emotional and the results are measurable. But in addition to that, what would it look like to become someone who was not only an intervention giver, but a prevention giver.

Following Jesus will eventually lead you to recognizing the foundation of ownership. God owns everything in the world, but He appoints us as stewards to wisely manage it. Everything we have is God’s. We get to enjoy what He sends us, but we do not permanently own these things. When God prompts us to share, we are not to grieve our loss. His principle of stewardship enables us to be generous as we learn that we are blessed to be a blessing.

As we continue our series on the Beatitudes, Jordan preached on Christ’s blessing over those who are persecuted. As we look back on church history and consider the global persecution of our brothers and sisters in other countries, we see countless examples of this. But in our modern, American context, we see a perhaps more subtle version of persecutions. Jesus confirms in this passage that we will experience persecution and if we do not, we must ask ourselves, why? Jesus also invites us to respond through rejoicing and gladness. Persecution develops in the Christian, a deep spiritual formation into the image of Jesus and the joy of being faithfully united with Him.

This Sunday, Westin and Jensen taught us how to make peace in our relationships (Matthew 5:9). God’s idea of peace is not the absence of conflict, but the enjoyment of all things good. Because of this, we must recognize that tension is inevitable, and it is how we handle that tension that will determine the depth of our relationships. Some may keep peace, other force peace, but God desires us to make peace. When we make peace, not only will we experience healthy relationships and blessing in our lives; but we will also experience blessing in eternity, for our unity is how the world will come to know Jesus.

This Sunday, Pastor Jordan preached about how to cultivate a pure heart (Matthew 5:8). Purity of heart is the radical reorientation of our entire lives to focus solely on God’s will and His goodness. Purity means leveraging our desires for His kingdom’s purpose and allowing God’s will on earth to be the single driving force of every decision that we make. Purity is not restrictive and condemning but is instead a person to love—a good God on a relentless pursuit for the people He loves.

This week, Brian Johnson taught on the fifth of the nine Beatitudes: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7 NIV). Mercy is “a loving response prompted by the misery or helplessness of another; generous in doing deeds of deliverance to those in need.” We are quick to call out and even cancel those who offend us. We have become great judges of others’ sin (but great lawyers of our own). This is not how God desires for us to live. He has shown us never-ending mercy by forgiving all of our sins, and He has called us to extend that same mercy to others. We are called to show mercy to those who make mistakes, to those who let us down, to those far from God, and to ourselves. Let’s stand before God having loved too much rather than having judged too harshly. Never forget: The forgiven forgive!

The kingdom of God comes to those who hunger and thirst for Biblical righteousness, which embodies both the private and the public, both righteousness in you and justice pursued by you. This vision of righteousness brings about the healing and renewal we so desperately need. We see examples of this righteousness in Amos 2:7, where Amos speaks out against sexual immorality AND oppression, and in James 1:26-27, where James calls for disciples to look after orphans and widows in distress AND to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. As followers of Jesus in this moment in history, we are constantly tempted to satiate our appetites at the cultural table rather than develop a single all-consuming starvation for the righteousness of God. However, God promises that those who truly hunger and thirst will be filled, wanting nothing more.

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5 NIV). In this beatitude, Jesus presents us with a paradox, that we are most powerful when we are meek. This idea is challenging because we tend to think of meekness as weakness. But meekness is not the absence of strength; it is strength under control. It is not laziness or cowardice; it is surrender to God. There is no one on earth stronger or more powerful than someone who is surrendered to the power of the Holy Spirit. When we walk in meekness, we live with an uncommon security, a higher perspective, and supernatural power. We do not have anything to prove. The pettiness and drama of the world does not get under our skin. We do not get offended. We live with the peace and strength of someone whose life is controlled by God Almighty. Never forget: more meekness, more power.

This week, Pastor Jordan taught on the second of the nine Beatitudes: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4 NIV). While it does not make logical sense that those who are experiencing deep sadness would also be ‘blessed’; there is blessing to be found in difficult times, because we can experience the provision, purpose, and presence of God. Psalm 34:18 (NIV) tells us that God is close to the brokenhearted. If we walk through mourning with a real understanding of who God is and how He is continuing to move in our lives, we can have deep comfort and peace in the midst of our pain.

The concept of poverty of spirit allows us to continue building a strong foundation in our faith. In our everyday lives, we often allow material abundance to feed into our pride, obstructing our acknowledgment of our spiritual bankruptcy. The inevitable self-righteous path we follow shifts the focus away from God's grace and we begin to believe we have single-handedly earned all our wealth. This narrative makes every aspect of our lives about us instead of about God. Jesus said that our pride will exclude us from the kingdom of God, and we must come with empty hands in order to open up the doors to everything the kingdom has to offer.

Jordan dives into what the Scriptures have to say about singleness. Often there is an assumption that you will grow in love with someone, marry, and have children. When that assumption is delayed, you may become discouraged or at worst identify as incompetent or unlovable. We see that there is a purpose to singleness. The goal of this teaching is to reveal God’s plan for both the gift and calling of singleness as well as the anticipation and preparation of marriage. Pastor Jordan reminds us not to miss the benefits of the season we are in because we are pining away for the benefits of another season. “God has ordained a season of singleness not for us to fill it with distractions or career ambitions, but to pursue an undistracted devotion to Him.”

Sometimes, the past does not stay in the past. We end up carrying painful moments with us, allowing them to weigh us down. When we hold on to those painful moments and difficult mistakes, it not only weighs us down, but it drastically changes how we live out our day to day lives. It steals away from our potential to be our best selves. But you don’t have to keep holding on to the pain from your past. Forgiveness is powerful. It allows us to experience the freedom that God intended for us to live in. It is the moments when we confess our sins and give our pains over to God, that we truly learn how to finally let go.

We tend to minimize how negative words affect us and others, but words have more power than we know. As we walk out our faith journey, it’s critical for us to recognize four practical truths about our words and how they influence our relationships. We also need to allow God to change our hearts. When we surrender our hearts and lives to God, He will empower us to change our words. But the only way to change our hearts is to put a filter on what we allow in our hearts. Jesus said our words come out of the overflow of our hearts. When we make healthy choices regarding what we watch, listen to, and participate in, we will have healthy hearts and be able to speak in a way that pleases God. Ultimately, healthy relationships understand how to use healthy words because healthy words are a part of God's plan for healthy relationships.

Jesus’ vision for the church is a people united under Him. It cannot be overstated the mission of Jesus to unite the people of God in healthy relationship. But that’s no easy task and it requires something of you. In fact, Healthy relationships begin with you. Don’t confuse healthy with convenient. Don’t confuse healthy with easy. Healthy relationships require a healthy amount of work. But the good news is that Jesus, if you’ll allow Him, wants to lead you in this work. For many of us, Jesus has influenced an occasional time slot on Sunday mornings but has little influence on the character of our lives. So, maybe it’s time we stop expecting something from Gods people that we’re not maturing in ourselves.

Before we write out our goals, we should begin in the heart. The temptation for Christians is to make our plans and add a dollop of Jesus on top, rather than allowing him to form in us the desires and motivations to do his work. So, whether or not we’re making concrete goals or more abstract ones, whether we’re writing down resolutions or foregoing them altogether, here are a few questions to consider as we peer into 2022, to draw closer to Christ.

Advent is as much about looking back as it is looking ahead—back to Christ’s incarnation, ahead to His return. Hebrews 9:28 tells us, “So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” The Christmas message when stripped of its cultural overtones and traditions is relatively simple: God came to earth in the form of a man, and He will return again. Jesus’ return points us to Heaven. You may ask; “What is Heaven like?” Well, whatever you can imagine—Heaven is better.
“Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is.”

Names are important and they can reveal a lot about us. Even more so, the names given to Jesus reveal the embodiment of who He is. In Isaiah 9:6-7, when Isaiah says that Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace, we begin to get a greater glimpse of how Jesus is the perfection of everything we have ever wanted.
Calling Jesus “the Everlasting Father” may seem odd, since the Bible clearly teaches that Jesus is “called God’s Son.” Here the Son is called “the Father.” This doesn’t mean he has switched places with God the Father, rather that Jesus, in his relationship to us, would be like the father we are most in need of. Some of you have great dads or you had great dads, and your memories of him are fond and cherished. But many of you may not have had a great relationship with your dad, and some of the greatest pain in your life comes from the lack of relationship with him.
There are Four Common Areas of Father-Woundedness: The Never-Satisfied Dad, The Time-Bomb Dad, The Emotionally Distant Dad, and the Absent Dad. But Jesus is the Everlasting Father whom you have always craved. Even if you had a good dad, at some point he disappoints you and fails you. That is why I love that word Isaiah adds, “Everlasting.” Jesus is the Everlasting Father. He never disappoints; never forsakes; never leaves; never dies. He is the Father your heart has always craved.

As we enter the Christmas season, it’s possible to miss some of the greatest things in your life because your heart is not tuned to look for them. God’s gift to us at the first Christmas was unexpected, but if you knew what you were looking for, and you recognized majesty when you saw it, it wasn’t disappointing. Pastor Jordan tells the story of Anna and Simeon, two of the first people to meet Jesus. Unlike so many others who missed Jesus, Anna and Simeon were able to recognize the unexpected majesty of the newborn King. Their story raises the question for us: Will we see Jesus this Christmas?

Without a theological and practical understanding of limits, we compromise our ability to love God, ourselves, and others over the long haul of our lives. Understanding the limits that are on our lives is a good thing and a deeply spiritual issue as well. It is true that some people need to become more aware of being lazy but for most people, we spend much of our time doing things beyond our limitations. God’s limitations on our lives are a gift that protect us, keep us grounded and humble, and break our self-will. They are God’s means of giving us direction, wisdom, and encounters with Himself

Why are so many of us living lives with deeply entrenched parts of us apparently untouched by the power and mercy of Jesus? For most of us, it is due to a resistance to looking at our own past and unwillingness to wrestle with its implications. As a result, we limit our spiritual maturity and struggle to grow in healthy relationships. Scripture and life teach us that an intricate, complex relationship exists between the kind of person we are today and our past. We must recognize that we have been shaped by things other than our status as children of God who have been made right by Jesus Christ. Therefore, we must do the hard work of discipleship that is necessary to let go of unbiblical ways of living and to learn to live in true freedom.

We hear the language “follower of Jesus” all the time, but what does it really mean? Put simply, it means we reorganize our life around three goals; be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do what Jesus did. That’s it. But that is an entire life’s pursuit, it does not happen overnight. It is not about trying, it is about training, and it is not just an event on a Sunday, but a “way” of life in community around the teachings of Jesus. To live this way means we need to be transformed, from the inside out. Through teaching, practice, community, and the Holy Spirit, we learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus, not simply a Christian.

Jesus likened his community to a family. At first this sounds nice and even sentimental, but actually this was one of Jesus’ most radical ideas, one that got him killed. It was radical in the first century, and it’s just as radical in the 21st century. In this teaching we will discover and learn why.

Much has been said and written about the differences between each generation in our nation. Unfortunately, there is a generational divide that inhibits God’s people from working together on God’s agenda, but it doesn’t have to be that way. In this teaching, we are exploring what it would take and what it could look like for a community of Jesus followers to be so committed to passing the baton of faith from one generation to the next. That even our very differences would lead us to God’s plan for us, for the future. We all play a part in helping the next generation win so let’s build together.

You may not realize this, but God desires to speak directly to you, and He wants to be in constant and continual conversation with us. We must let the simple understanding that God wants real communication with us, sink in and grab hold of our hearts. Once we do that, understanding and recognizing His voice becomes natural and easy. And we begin to see that communication with God is just as much of us recognizing and hearing His voice as much as it is God desperately wanting to talk to us. That is healthy communication. Think about what that means in your life to have constant communication with God. He wants to be with us and help us in every aspect; from relationships, to work, to finances, to your family. Hear God’s voice and watch how it transforms your life.

Archbishop William Temple was famously quoted as saying, “When I pray, coincidences happen, when I stop praying, the coincidences stop happening.” When we reflect on our lives and the times when we have prayed or neglected prayer, many of us would say the same thing. Prayer means many things to many people, but at its simplest and most immediate, it means asking God for help. In fact, God not only permits us to ask for His help, but He also encourages us to do so. As our heavenly Father, He loves to show off His love and power by responding to our prayers that are according to His will.

Have you ever felt like prayer is for everyone, except for you, a normal person? Often when we pray, we expect God’s voice to boom like thunder...but mostly, He whispers. We expect Him to wear tap dancing shoes that we can hear coming down the hall, but He tiptoes and hides from the crowd. We expect Him to be strange, but He comes to us disguised as our life. Prayer is far more normal than we realize. But the best way to start praying is to stop praying. To pause. To be still. To breathe easy and remember that God is God and we are not.

Prayer is a vast subject, of which there are no experts (besides Jesus, of course). As a community, we are spending the next four weeks on prayer while recognizing that we could easily spend forty weeks on this subject. Therefore, we want to narrow this down a bit. This series is aimed at new Christians and ordinary followers of Jesus who may not have studied theology and do not consider themselves Jedi prayer warriors but would like to still grow and go a bit deeper in their relationship with God. In the words of Abraham Heschel, “Prayer is our humble answer to the inconceivable surprise of living.” Our English term for prayer comes from the Latin word; precarious. We pray because life is precarious. So, the question is not so much why we pray, but rather how and to whom. Let’s begin there.

When thinking on purpose in life, we tend to immediately think on, “my purpose.” When truly, pursuing purpose in life is all in pursuing God’s purpose for our lives, not our own. We tend to want to know the big grandiose picture of what our purpose is supposed to be while we are here on this earth. And all God asks of us is to say yes to His daily instructions and to trust Him, and He will be faithful to reveal His purpose to us in His timing. All the while understanding that whatever His purpose for us each individually is, it all comes back to one central point; bringing glory to God while we are here on this earth.

As James wraps up his letter, he emphasizes the importance of prayer and faith. Throughout the Book of James series, we have received practical teaching and instruction to help us grow and live purpose-filled lives for God’s glory, but we cannot walk it out in our own strength. We need the power and presence of God, so we must pray! And we need faith in order to break through the natural into the supernatural. If we press into prayer and build our faith, we will see God do great things in our lives and the world around us.

In the church at Jerusalem who James was writing to, there was some major fighting, problems, conflict, and drama. Unfortunately, not unlike what churches across the world still experience today. This is why a lot of people never give church a chance. Many people are open to God, they’re just turned off by His church. Not only do we fight with people within the church – we fight with people outside the church. People who don’t believe what I believe, behave how I behave, value what I value, support what I support, vote how I vote. We spend so much time fighting unnecessary wars that only divides us further. But why are we at war with one another? We belong to the same family, we trust the same Savior, we are indwelt by the same Holy Spirit and yet we fight one another. James chapter four lays out how we can become spiritually mature by becoming peacemakers not troublemakers.
“But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness”

In James 3, James teaches us how powerful our tongues are. Like a rudder that steers a large ship, or a spark that turns into a forest fire, our tongues have the power to impact lives around us. Not only are they powerful, but they are also difficult to control. We’ve seen how destructive words can be, but the power of our tongues can also be used to give life and build people up. However, we know that behavior modification does not work or help us long term. Jesus says, from our heart the mouth speaks, revealing what’s inside of us. In order for us to use the gift and the power that God has given us, we must allow God’s love to transform our hearts. In doing so, we become mature followers of Jesus; gracious in speech, positively impacting people around us, the future, and ourselves.

James 2 says we must not show favoritism, but, instead, love our neighbor as ourselves. We cater to certain groups of people in hopes of getting something from them - Jesus served all people to give something to them. The enemy wants to divide the Church, and we need to be intentional and diligent to preserve our unity. We have to fight together against division. James examines five basic Christian doctrines in the light of the way we treat other people in order to learn how to love well, how to practice the, “Royal Law.”
“Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law. For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws. For the same God who said, “You must not commit adultery,” also said, “You must not murder.” So, if you murder someone but do not commit adultery, you have still broken the law.”

The Book of James was written to a church that was scattered and couldn’t meet all together due to circumstances beyond their control. We’re still experiencing a similar separation as a church today. In difficult times like these, trials and temptations are inevitable, but God will empower us to persevere as we live out our faith and grow spiritually mature. This is what the book of James is all about, growing spiritually mature and the first mark of maturity that James identifies is learning to become “patient in testing”. Easier said than done but that’s where God comes in …
“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.”

If you grew up in church, you’ve probably heard that, in the “end times”, the earth and everything in it is going to be destroyed. If you believe that the whole world is just going to burn up in the end, all this talk about work and rest really won’t make a ton of sense. However, this view of ultimate world destruction doesn’t seem to be consistent with the rest of scripture, nor does it seem to fit into the first-century Jewish perspective on the afterlife that Jesus Himself upheld. How we view the end affects the way we live our lives now. Following Jesus is about partnering with the Holy Spirit in seeing heaven invade earth through us. Our work is not just a means to an end. It is an end in and of itself.

Workaholism is one of the ten commandments we brag about breaking. We work more than ever before. We have more than ever before. And yet, we are more miserable than ever before. Michael Zigaralle, from Charleston University School of Business, surveyed more than twenty thousand Christians in North America and found that busyness is the number one major distraction to Christian’s lives with God. There is a rhythm to the world, and God is inviting us to join Him in this rhythm. When we don’t accept His invitation, we reap the consequences; fatigue, burnout, anxiety, depression, busyness, starved relationships, worn down immune systems, low energy levels, anger, and emptiness. But when we do accept His invitation, we encounter the “Rest of Jesus."

Over the past few weeks, we have been unpacking God’s vision for your work. However, we need to address the danger to this vision of work because if you embrace the vision of God for work, odds are, you will make money. And when we make money, when we receive a paycheck, it’s really easy to get sucked into this cycle: Work more, buy more, repeat. But the end result is a stressed out, anxiety laden, overly busy, greedy society. According to the American Psychological Association, money is the number 1 stressor in our country. So, how do we keep from getting sucked into the vortex of work more, buy more, repeat? Through simplicity and generosity.

Many of us constantly battle with trying to live up to the expectations of others or trying to live up to my own unrealistic expectations. For others, we find ourselves wrestling with the lie of the expectations we think God has for us. If you battle with the pursuit of perfectionism you may even find yourself “almost” lying in order to show an image of yourself that’s not real. Or maybe you avoid something that you’d like to do because you’re afraid you won’t hit the standard, so you’ll avoid it altogether. Or you obsess over something to get it just right without realizing that perfectionism will hinder progress while telling yourself “this is the price I pay to be successful.” So how do we avoid the burden of perfection? Jesus tells us; “become like little children.”

For so many of us, work is a means to an end. Maybe that end is significance, power and authority, notoriety, money, opportunity, the weekend or vacation, rest, or play and leisure. Work can so easily become the thing we do to get what we really want. Work was never intended to be a means to an end, in fact, work is a part of the “end” in and of itself. Think about this; If Jesus came today, He could have had your job. In fact, following Jesus is about one simple question; “If Jesus were me, if He lived where I live, had my job, my education, made my salary, had my family, how would He live?” Following Jesus is the process of answering that.

There are over 7.9 billion people on earth. Which is a number that most of us have a hard time wrapping our heads around but one of the striking things about humanity is how different we all are. Everyone is unique and diverse and yet, we are all called to rule, subdue, work, and take care of the earth but we each do that in a unique way. The term “vocation” comes from the Latin word, “vocatio”, which essentially means “calling”. Your vocation is your calling in life.
We believe God calls pastors and missionaries AND we believe He calls bankers, musicians, stay at home moms & dads, artists, accountants, and baristas among so many other vocations. Your vocation, your calling, or whatever you want to call it, isn’t limited to “spiritual” type jobs and careers. In this teaching, we are going to discuss how you should choose your vocation wisely and how you should use your vocation wisely.

It seems that we often have to remind ourselves that the purpose of working is not about serving ourselves but rather serving God and others. There is a higher purpose to our labor, and that is to make Jesus known and reflect His character in all the work that we do. God created man with the ability and purpose to work. And when we view work through the lens of a gift from God; we will start to see the fulfillment and provision working brings us. We would become faithful in our jobs and work to please God, not man. And our work would resemble God’s true character. How we view our work makes all the difference in how we represent God and how we draw others into Him.

What’s the first question we usually ask somebody when we meet them? “So, what do you do?” Which is essentially the same question as, “What are you giving your life to?” and “Do you like it?” The vast majority of our lives is spent working. The next largest slice of the pie is spent resting – the stuff we look forward to and savor. In church, we often spend most of our time teaching people how to live the minority of their lives, but we need to talk about ALL of life. What it means to be a follower of Jesus at church AND at school, at the gym, at our coffee shop, on a date night, and of course at work. To understand this better, we have to go to the beginning.

A lot of us have trouble understanding why Jesus had to die for our sins not because we don’t understand God’s holiness, but we misunderstand our own level of depravity. In a world where so much sin is accepted and celebrated, it’s easy to believe that we aren’t “that bad.” Without the sacrifice of Jesus, we would be without hope and without forgiveness. Isaiah 64:6 says, “We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.” Even on our best days and with our best intentions, without the blood of Jesus we would deserve death as the punishment for sin. We did nothing to earn our forgiveness and everything to deserve punishment. But in God’s great love for us, He sent His son and took our punishment upon Himself. Jesus died not because we were worthy of it, but because He loves to be with the ones He loves.

Our goal in life is not simply to follow Jesus but to become like Him. Therefore, He must increase and we must decrease (John 3:30). There are three promises we can make to help us be more like Jesus in our relationships. First, we can promise to respond with patience and love rather than to react out of emotion and impulse. Next, we can promise to focus on the good in people instead of focusing on their faults. Last, we can promise to talk it out when there is conflict instead of walking away and giving up on the relationship.

In order for relationships to work, we must let the One who designed them define them. God wants our relationships to be healthy. Contrary to what we often see in the world, relationships are not disposable. They require commitment in order to work well. Making promises can assist us in staying committed to our relationships. There are four specific promises we can make to strengthen our relationships. First, we make the promise of priority. We have to put our relationships in the right order. Then we make the promise of continual pursuit. For example, we can work just as hard at keeping our spouse as we did when we were trying to win their affection. The same principle can be applied to employers or customers. We can work as hard to keep a job as we did to get the job or promotion. Next, we promise not to make our relationships all about ourselves. Instead, we think of relationships as partnerships, allowing our differences to complement each other. Last, we promise to confide in one another instead of concealing our weaknesses and shortcomings.

The breath that is in your lungs, gives you the ability to live, to speak, and to enjoy your daily life. But the breath that is in you, since it is a gift from God, is meant for so much more. We are called to use the breath that God gave us, for His good and His glory. That means speaking life, speaking love, speaking encouragement, and letting our voices be used to draw people into Christ. What we say in our world today carries so much weight and impact, and if we are housing God’s breath in our very bodies it is our responsibility, our job even, to speak words of life into the world. It is because of His very breath that He put into us that we can even speak, so may our words be worship, praise, love, and life.

For many Christians, Romans 8:28 is a “go-to” scripture in perilous times. Especially when we cannot explain “why” something bad has or currently is happening. The problem is, we often use this verse as a stoic blanket by saying, “Something bad has happened? Aww, that’s terrible. But wait! All things work together for good.” In many ways, with that being our complete understanding of Romans 8:28, we equate God to a cosmic magician. When in reality, God wants to partner and co-labor with us to establish His kingdom and will on earth as it is in Heaven. God’s people are not simply spectators, not simply beneficiaries, but active participants. The vocation of human beings in Genesis is to reflect Gods purposes in the world. Let’s dive in together to have a more complete understanding of Romans 8:28 and how we can partner with God in our world.

In the book of John, the ninth chapter, Jesus’ disciples ask the standard question, not that different from the question many people ask today when bad things happen, “Who sinned?” But Jesus doesn’t look back to a hypothetical cause - He looks forward, to see what God is going to do about it. Meaning; what Jesus is going to do about it. So, He heals the man. As to communicate that this is the “now” time, not the time for speculating about previous sin. As Jesus followers, if we are waiting for a special event like a natural disaster, a global pandemic, or a change of politics to nudge us into looking for Jesus’ kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. Or furthermore, a special event to tell us or others to repent when we are drifting into careless sin, or to remind us that life is short, and our neighbors need to know who Jesus really is; then we have gone to sleep on the job. Let’s discover what it means to partner with Jesus to see His kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

God is a loving Father, so why would the Bible talk about our need to fear God? In this message, Jordan tackles one of the most challenging truths of Scripture; that fear of God is necessary for real, authentic, friendship with God. We all have fears. In fact, right now is a very fearful time for us all. Too often, though, we have let fear rule our lives and stop us from taking a stand for what we know God wants us to do and what God says is true. When the Church has a true fear of God, we do not fit neatly into a category, a political party, or a tribe. However, we do find ourselves in greater unity with one another and with Jesus. Maybe the reason we have become so casual in our obedience to Jesus is because we don’t fear the Lord. If we are going to truly experience the fullness of a relationship with God, there are four things we must do that we will unpack together in this message.

In one of his more famous quotes, Martin Luther King Jr. said, “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” Prayer is an essential part of our faith in Jesus. We learn through the teachings of Jesus that we pray to God, in the name of Jesus. It is because of what Jesus has done on your behalf that you have access to God, as your father. To say that’s incredible is a gross understatement and yet, prayer is still a bit of a mystery to us. The Bible called people to such disciplines as fasting, prayer, worship, celebration, and study; but gave almost no instruction about how to do them. Those disciplines were practiced and were such a part of the general culture that the “how to” was common knowledge. It is not common anymore. However, Jesus gave us a model prayer that today we refer to as, The Lord’s Prayer, and in it we find what Pastor Jordan refers to as, “The Cycle of Prayer” where we begin to learn how to pray effectively and learn that prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance but rather laying hold of His willingness.

A recent study revealed that 9 out of 10 Americans will pray at least one time this week. Yet, with all of that praying, prayer is still a mystery to so many of us. Philippians 4:6 tells us to, “be anxious for nothing but pray about everything”. It is one of the more famous bible verses but one of the most challenging too. How many of us can say that we “pray about everything”? If we are really honest, its oftentimes prayer itself that makes us anxious. As we look at Philippians 4, we explore the obstacles that hinder us from a strong prayer life.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”-Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
There may not be an adequate way of truly explaining the importance of God’s word in our lives and what it does to us when we choose to live by it. It is an experience that changes us. Daily it is up to us to determine if the world or the Word will be the basis for how we live our lives. When we have an attitude that gratefully receives, humbly accepts, and intently embraces the truth of God’s Word; we are partnering with God to establish His kingdom on earth, as it is in heaven.

“The greatest issue facing the world today, with all its heart-breaking needs, is whether those who are identified as Christians will become disciples – students, apprentices, practitioners – of Jesus Christ. Steadily learning from Him how to live the life of the Kingdom of Heaven into every corner of human existence.” – Dallas Willard
We hear the language, “follower of Jesus” all the time, but what does it really mean? Put simply, it means we reorganize our life around three goals; to be with Jesus, to become like Jesus, and to do what Jesus did. That’s it. But that’s an entire life’s pursuit. It doesn’t happen overnight, it’s not about trying, it’s about training, and it’s not just an event on a Sunday, but a “way” of life in community around the teachings of Jesus. To live this way means we need to be transformed, from the inside out. Through teaching, practice, community, and the Holy Spirit, we learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus, not simply a Christian.

One theologian was asked, “If you could describe Jesus in one word, what would that be?” His reply, “Relaxed.” As we continue leaning into knowing God in a personal way, we cannot neglect the role that rest plays in our relationship with our Heavenly Father. Rest does not mean you don’t do anything; it means you learn to do the right things. In fact, for many of us, following Jesus may entail changing the pace of our lives. In this teaching we learn that to experience Gods presence we have to walk at God’s pace. The goal is to keep in step with Jesus - not far behind, not out in front – but rather, step by step.

The beauty of the Bible is that it is literally God’s very words. When we pause and view this book as God actually speaking to us and revealing His wisdom and truth to us, it fully alters our approach and how we read and grasp it. This book now takes on a whole new identity to us. Hebrews 4:12 says that, “the word of God is living and active and full of power…” When we approach the Bible as living and active, we can begin to meditate on the scriptures in a new and life-giving way. We become active participants of His Word.
Continuing in our series “Christmas…more than just a nice story”, we dive into the hope the prophet Isaiah was pointing to in Isaiah 9:6. Isaiah describes the son to be born as, “Mighty God.” However, we learn that mighty looked a lot different than anyone expected. Jesus doesn’t impose His will and take over as many expected, instead He simply submitted to the will of the Father. This even resulted in the sacrifice of His own life. Jesus sets forth an example for us, and what it looks like to live in humble obedience to God. However, this is often a challenge for us for a variety of reasons. The key for us to overcome the challenge this presents is to look at the reason we celebrate Christmas, the love of God exemplified in the sacrifice of His one and only son.

Christmas can be a very difficult season for many people. It can highlight the loss of a loved one, reawaken old family drama, or even make us painfully aware of our loneliness. But even in that darkness, we can have hope because Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor who guides us from a position of authority. It may feel intimidating to approach God with your problems. What if He ignores you? What if He rejects you? What if you only receive judgement instead of mercy? These questions may seem reasonable, but they stem from thinking that God is like an angry boss, rather than a Wonderful Counselor. When we approach God with our problems, our sins, and our hopes; He sympathizes with our weaknesses and is eager to help us.
Jesus wants us to come to Him with our problems, our joys, our questions, and our hopes. He is both willing and able to help and heal us. But we have to come to Him in full honesty, be willing to change, and be ready to do what He says. In Him, we have a guide that is better than words can describe. Loosen your grip on your secrets, your fears, and your determination to follow your own counsel and allow Jesus to guide you. When you hand over your life to Jesus, light will overwhelm your darkness.

What if the uncertainty of life with the new coronavirus could be one of the best things to ever happen to our spiritual formation? What if, when we tell the story of our life in old age, and people ask what it was that made us who we are, we boldly answered, “living through 2020”? Control is often the issue underneath so many of the issues that block, hamper, or derail our spiritual formation into people of love, joy, and peace. Fortunately for us, God never intended for us to be in control. Consequently, He guides and leads us the best when we surrender complete control into His hands.
As we enter this week of Thanksgiving, we enter a time where we naturally pause and think about what we are thankful for. It is easy to rattle of the normal things like family, health, job, and friends, which are normally the things that first come to mind. But what if for a change we stop and reflect on who we are thankful to and not just on what we are thankful for?
Need some good news? Our God is big enough to oversee the whole world and in the same breath He is loving enough to care about you. When we invite God’s presence to inhabit our daily lives, we set ourselves apart from the things of the world. Being in His presence is not dependent on us being in a particular place or in a certain circumstance. Rather it is dependent on simply our decision and determination to keep God in front of us at all times. When we make that daily decision, our posture towards everyday encounters change. The way we talk to people, love people, react towards people; it all shifts and in turn comes from a Godly presence. May we all be still and know that He is God as His presence makes all the difference in our lives.

It seems that many of us feel uncomfortable talking about the topic of Hell. Yet, Jesus talks about this topic more than all of the other New Testament authors combined. We often try to avoid it as if it doesn’t exist. However, when we live our lives disregarding the reality of Hell, we begin living with less conviction, less sacrifice, and less regard to Jesus.
Legacy is not about being famous - it’s about living a life that honors God. It’s not an event, but a lifestyle. We live legacy lives when we love God, love people, and invest in something bigger than ourselves. A life lived for simply ourselves is uninspiring and dies merely with us. However, a life lived for others goes beyond just us and touches lives even after we are gone. Let us all accept the call to live a life of legacy!

Having a heavenly mindset is especially important for advancing the kingdom. Not just advancing the kingdom in our own lives but advancing the kingdom on this earth. When we forcefully and with intention grab hold of the kingdom of heaven we in turn advance it here on earth.
Living with a heavenly mindset means we understand the future that is to come. We understand that our future, our eternity, is with Christ. So what are we doing today to keep an eternity driven mindset while we are still on Earth?
Every deed is a seed and in time we will reap a reward for every seed we plant. In this talk, you will discover how to see the potential and reap the reward in every seed we plant.
