Kartisia "KC" Esco is the Head Athletic Trainer and Health Science Instructor at Warren Easton Charter High School. As a Health Science Instructor, she is responsible for educating the students in the medical field through courses including Introduction of Health Occupations, Medical Terminology, Emergency Medical Responder, and Sports Medicine. In her role, she helps the students by being a liaison, connecting the students with mentors and opportunities that would better prepare the students for the work force. Today’s episode meets at the intersection of Tech, Public Health, and Legislation. Our guest is Charmika Placide. Charmika Annatisha Placide currently serves as an IT Business Systems Analyst and Public Health Consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Charmika is tasked with ensuring oversight and governance to over 30 public health IT systems. Prior to this role Charmika worked as a Public Health Analyst and Consultant to CDC. As a consultant she completed The 2019 CDC Field Epidemiology Manual, a tool used globally for epidemics. Prior to her work at CDC, Charmika was an IT Project Coordinator with McKesson where she helped implement the first cloud e-procurement system throughout the enterprise. Leveraging her business and analytical skills to solve complex problems, often collaborating across functional areas. Entrepreneurial minded she managed her own contract with a nonprofit for women and children who were victims of sexual abuse; managing web traffic, social media and volunteer logistics, as well as creating inter-office systems. In her spare time, Charmika volunteers with Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) Georgia chapter to advocate for people with disabilities. Recently, Charmika served as a panelist at CCFA’s inaugural women’s education event to discuss health equity and advocacy. Ms. Placide has held positions with community organizations nationally and locally as a fellow, advisor, and committee member geared specifically towards inclusion to build pipelines for people of color. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Managerial Sciences from the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. Racism is a public health issue - Research studies show that the medical community think and feel that black people don’t feel pain or have high level of tolerance. Recalling Jodi Ann’s cancer journey, it took 3 years for her to get diagnosed, going in and out of doctors’ offices and convincing them that the pain that she was feeling was real. It was only after 3 years that she was told that she has a tumor in the spinal cord and that she needs surgery to be taken it out. - People create environments that make black people sick. Not because genetically black people are sick, they put factories to pollute the air in black and brown communities. There's a system that creates sickness in black people, not just environmentally, but also even in our offices. - Chronic racial stress that damages you physiologically that impacts what is actually physically happening in your body. Eradicating the Racism Issue - A whole system that needs to shift. We need to have a racial equity lens on all the decisions that we make that impact people of color. - The biggest work is for leaders and decision-makers who decide things around where businesses go, different policies around the environment should look at things through a racial equity lens. - Advocate for yourself and look for people who will advocate for you. Do research because that’s how you are going to advance as an individual in this system. When you are a black woman, society and even you perceive yourself as strong. So how do strong people ask for help? How do strong people get help? Do you know how to help strong people? The book, Black Cancer will disrupt this idea of strong as something that protects you. Being strong is something that can also put you at risk because maybe you're not aware of when you need help. November 20, 2019, is Latina Equal Pay Day. It’s not a celebration, it’s a day of awareness.
Many know that lower earnings for women equate to less money to care for their families. It’s been a half of century since President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act yet, there still isn’t equal pay. Latina women earn about 54 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men. There are many layers to factors that contribute to this gap and raising awareness on Latina Equal Pay Day is an opportunity for us all to engage in a deeper conversation about solutions.
The gender wage gap can’t be solved by individuals alone. Companies, government, community organizations also have a role in addressing the solutions. LeanIn.org has comprehensive suggested solutions on their website. As individuals, we can also take an active role in advocating for ourselves.
Make career aspirations known to your supervisors by clearly articulating if you are interested in roles that expand your skill set and pay more. Think clearly about what you want to say and present that in a concise manner.
Be aware of market rate, before heading into a conversation about compensation prepare with facts. Use a few of the online salary tools to understand how much you should be earning based on experience level, education, and very importantly your geographic area.
Ask confidently, when you present your request to your supervisor or tell a job recruiter salary expectations say it with confidence. Be prepared to speak to the value you’ll be adding to the team/organization/company and follow that up with facts of the market rate.
When it comes to equal pay, the more we know the better-informed decisions we can make as it relates to which jobs we accept and money that we decide to accept for the value we add.

Upon completion of her PhD, Martinique Perkins Waters spent three years in a primary research position in the School of Public Health. As a faculty member in the Department of Health Behavior, She studied the health outcomes of family caregivers. During that time, Dr. Perkins Waters worked collaboratively with her peers to publish seven manuscripts and worked on several non-profit, private, and federal grants. Additionally, She made 15 presentations on her research and spent a year training in Health Disparities Research program. Why do women leave companies in male-dominated industries?
It is a million-dollar question. The reason why it's a million-dollar question is that the cost of turnover, the cost of losing talent, losing that knowledge that you've invested in, you've hired this great person and that goes out the door and you don't know why that is a massive drain on the bottom line. On the other hand, when managed correctly, employees can become a business greatest asset.
How do you cope with underperforming employees as a leader? You don’t have to let underperformance problems escalate to a point where you’re forced to fire an employee. One of the highly valuable skills that you should develop as a leader in your organization is being able to transform your underperforming employees into outstanding performers.
In today’s episode of PowerBanking, I will tackle the leadership challenge topic, specifically on how to on what do when you really like an employee as a person, but in terms of them getting their work done, they're not cutting it. You can see the signs that it's time to let them go, but you have invested in them as a leader, you understand their personal circumstances, you understand they have a lot going on and you are worried about the financial impact that letting them go is going to have. I’ll share some tips on a couple of things to consider as you're going through this phase.

BlackWomensEqualPay Each year, Equal Pay Day for All is held in April, but when we look at the wage gap for women of color, the gap is far greater. When compared to all men, women earn $.80 (cents) on the $1. When compared to White, non-Hispanic men, Black/African American women earn only $.63 (cents) on the $1. This means the typical Black woman must work until August 2018 to be paid what the typical White man was paid at the end of December 2017. This year’s Black Women’s Equal Pay Day is being observed on Tuesday, August 7.
