BRDC SuperStars is well established as a programme which any serious young British driver aspires to be part of. As the scheme only selects the very brightest prospects, competition for places is tough and keenly fought. The SuperStars are supported with training programmes which the on-track results of the last two years suggest, do help give those taking part a competitive edge. SuperStars compete across the different disciplines from single seaters to prototypes, touring cars to GTs. Indeed, it is an important part of the scheme’s ethos to ensure that those who benefit from the support go on to be successful across all disciplines of motor sport and not simply in racing cars. The Club very much wants to play its part in nurturing talent across the board in order to ensure that British drivers remain at the fore, both nationally and internationally, in years to come. In addition to access to the Club and the opportunities for networking with the Members, the SuperStars will receive direct assistance with all aspects of professional motor sport. This will include help with physical and mental training, career guidance, team building skills, sponsorship advice, media and sales training, PR and marketing, motor sport seminars and workshops with BRDC Members. They will also gain significant benefit of media coverage that the BRDC SuperStars programme itself generates. Indeed, the Club’s endorsement of each young driver’s status as one of the very brightest prospects in motor sport is undoubted but hard to put a value on. The SuperStars programme helps to strengthen links between young drivers and the Club, as well as reinforcing the relevance of the BRDC to the wider motor sport community.

Jordan kicked off his 2012 campaign by contesting the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, where he finished fifth overall and claimed a race victory at Taupo. In his main season, Jordan finished as vice champion in Formula Renault NEC and also claimed a podium in the ultra competitive Eurocup. He finished off the year by storming to four wins and seven podiums, from just eight races, in the MRF Challenge in India. Despite not contesting all races in the MRF, King incredibly finished a runner-up overall.
Jordan steps up to the international stage in 2013, where he will contest the Formula 3 European series for multi-championship winning team Carlin Motorsport.
High Speed Action at Thruxton Thriller
The third race meeting of the BTCC was upon us already and the team was feeling confident with progress from Donington at the last rounds.
For a change the weather forecast was looking warm and sunny for the weekend, which in itself would be a separate challenge.
MG KX Momentum racers Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff say that they are pleased to have increased their points tallies at the third meeting of the 2013 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season at Thruxton last weekend despite a last-gasp heartbreak.
Tordoff, racing a BTCC car at the daunting Thruxton circuit for the first time, took a fourth and a seventh place in the opening two events before he too suffered tyre woe in the final showdown. Feeling a vibration in his car’s steering and not wanting to suffer a failure, he lowered his pace to make sure he made it to the flag in eighth position.
Tordoff said the results were damage limitation at a track where the cars had not had the ultimate pace. He was nevertheless pleased with three top ten finishes.
“It was clear that we didn’t have the quickest car at Thruxton so the objective then is to try and chip away at it and get as fast as possible while keeping things sensible,” he explained. “We tried lots of things on the set-up and managed to limit the damage in terms of points to the Honda drivers, so in that regard it has been a success. We’ve got Thruxton behind us now and we don’t have to go back there, so we can concentrate on tracks where we know we will be stronger.”
Jack Hawksworth is one of the most exciting British prospects in motorsport and is currently racing in the United States. Hawksworth originally started racing karts in the Junior Max category back in 2004 taking part in his first race at the Wombwell kart track in South Yorkshire just two weeks after his 13th birthday. Success at club level quickly followed and it wasn't long before he picked up his first win against stiff national competition in the rain at the Gold Cup in only his sixth race.
At the age of 21 Adrian Quaife-Hobbs is one of europe's brightest motor racing prospects, currently a resident in the UK. In 2012 Adrian dominated the renamed AutoGP World Series with leading top-level single seater outfit SuperNova Racing, clinching the title with two races still remaining. The only series to race on three continents outside F1, on some of the best tracks in the world, AutoGP attracted a quality field and allowed Adrian to show his expert racing skills and superb car control in front of massive crowds. In a series previously won by Ferrari F1 racer Felipe Massa and Lotus F1 driver Romain Grosjean, Adrian became the only driver in the series history to take five race wins in one season, three consecutive pole positions and three successive race wins.
Two years ago he made the transition from karts to cars in the new InterSteps Championship with Fortec, winning that championship in 2011, before moving into the Formula Renault Category.
2012 saw Jake clinch the Formula Renault Northern European Championship with Fortec Motorsport, leading him to being one of five nominees for the McLaren BRDC Autosport Award. Jake won the coveted award and aims to once again establish himself as the best in his class again for 2013, as he competes in the World Series by Renault, with Fortec Motorsport in Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup.
Alexander set out his intentions early in his car racing career by winning the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver Award in 2008. Since then his career has gone from strength to strength through Formula 3, GP3, LMP2 and has been an Official McLaren GT Driver since 2012. This year Alexander continues as a McLaren GT Driver and will compete with Hexis Racing in a McLaren MP4-12C GT3 in the Blancpain Enduracen Series.
OAK Racing made an excellent start to their 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship campaign at the 6 Hours of Silverstone today by finishing second and fifth in the LM P2 class, while the team’s non-WEC entry was eighth. Olivier Pla, Alex Brundle and David Heinemeier Hansson overcame changeable weather conditions throughout the race to bring the #24 Morgan-Nissan LM P2 home second behind Delta-ADR.
Southwater-based driver Jolyon Palmer is confident of closing down the points gap to the GP2 championship leaders during rounds five and six of the championship in Barcelona this weekend (10-12 May).
The 22-year-old, who drives for the Carlin team in the F1 feeder series, secured two strong points finishes last time out in Bahrain. A fighting drive in race one, including a fantastic start, saw Jolyon move up from 12th on the grid to finish fifth, demonstrating the same overtaking prowess that saw him gain 32 positions after mechanical issues struck in Malaysia, the previous event.
He followed that up with a sixth place finish in the second Bahrain race to lie sixth in the championship standings.
Jolyon now heads to Barcelona, where he recorded the fifth fastest time in testing in March, where GP2 will support the Spanish Grand Prix as the European phase of the 2013 season commences.
Alex Lynn claimed two more podium finishes in the second round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship on home ground at Silverstone, as well as a storming drive in the other race that saw him scorch through from outside the top 20 into sixth place.
The 19-year-old Englishman, who claimed fastest lap on a recovery drive in which he made up 17 places thanks to some dramatic overtaking, has moved up to fourth place in the championship as a result.
Lynn, who won at Silverstone in British F3 last season, as well as during his title-winning Formula Renault UK campaign in 2011, had high hopes for success with his Mercedes-powered Prema Powerteam Dallara.
British racing driver Jack Harvey last week completed the last of the pre-season GP3 tests ahead of the start of the 2013 GP3 season in May. Harvey, driving for ART Grand Prix, has had a strong start to his GP3 campaign; consistently finishing within the top four at each test.
The pre-season tests saw the Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver visit Estoril, Barcelona and, most recently, Silverstone. Estoril and Barcelona saw Harvey face some tricky track conditions with heavy rain falling throughout much of the tests. At both of the first two tests ART Grand Prix worked solidly to develop the car throughout each of the sessions. As the tests progressed, Harvey was able to find more pace which saw his lap times drop consistently.
The MSA Team UK driver finished the three day test at Estoril in P3 and the two day test in Barcelona in P2 having done a total of 126 laps.
Donington Park, Leicestershire UK, Sunday 21 April 2013. Dean Stoneman maintained his championship lead with a solid second place and fastest lap in round four of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB.
Starting from the second row of the grid and on the dirty side of the track the Redline driver suffered an uncharacteristically slow start. As the leading pack entered turn one at Redgate the 22-year old found himself in fifth place behind his main championship rivals. Dean then began to pick off Lloyd and Butcher to get himself into third as the leading bunch began to pull away. Stoneman was on rapid form as he aimed to make up places and on lap six posted the fastest lap of the race with a time of 1.07.855 as he chased Gelzinis.
Stoneman then began his push for second and on lap 9 he forced Gelzinis into an error on the Craner Curves and he was able to ease by with an eye now on the leader Meadows. The BRDC Superstar Stoneman began to reduce the gap between himself and first place with each lap. The advancing number 7 Porsche was pushing hard and even created a huge cloud of dust as he went slightly off line as the two cars entered the Wheatcroft straight from Goddards. Eventually it was Stoneman who ran out of laps and had to settle for a solid second place.
The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is an integral part of the F1 race weekend, and will support the 2013 grand prix schedule at each of its seven European stops - including Monaco, Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps and Monza - before the season concludes against the dramatic backdrop of Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi. The season starts in Barcelona over the weekend of 10-12 May.
Michelin will host the Supercar Paddock at the Goodwood Festival of Speed for the second year in succession, teaming up with former British Touring Car Champion Tim Harvey at the UK’s flagship motorsport event.
The 2013 event marks 20 years of the Festival of Speed, which Michelin will help celebrate by bringing its supercar and motorsport heritage to life with two exhibition sites, one in the Supercar Paddock and one in the main arena, at the festival. The stands will showcase some of Michelin’s milestones over the years both on the track and on the road.
Harvey will welcome superstar cars and drivers on to the Michelin Supercar Paddock stand for interviews and to display some of the most impressive and exciting cars at the festival.
“It’s going to be a massive year of celebrations for FoS and Michelin with some major milestones reached in terms of motorsport and supercars.” said Harvey, who drove his BMW 318is to BTCC glory in 1992 “With big anniversaries for marques such as Porsche, McLaren, Corvette and some surprise world product debuts lined up for the Michelin Supercar Paddock, July can’t come around soon enough.”
Delighted to confirm the line up for the sixth year. “We always find it hard to make the final decision but after careful consideration we are delighted that we have so many talented drivers to work with. It reinforces our commitment to the sport and the benefits that the BRDC can add to the careers of up and coming British talent. I am particularly pleased to be welcoming seven new drivers to the programme this year".
