Welcome to The Fall Forward Podcast! I'm Emilia Gardner, and this is my show. I've been in the "make money online" niche since about 2018, and I have several years of a professional career behind that. I started this podcast because I love, love, love talking about side hustling transitioning away from traditional careers, especially when I have the chance to talk about it with really sharp, hard-working, motivated people. As for me, I'm primarily focused on building and growing content websites monetized with display ads and affiliate links, though I am also slowly growing income streams online from KDP, teaching online, and YouTube. That being said, I still want to talk to people about their ideas, their goals, their dreams, and the struggles, in the online world or anywhere else. There's a lot to be learned from other people's journeys, even if their focus is different than mine (or yours).
In two years, Jasper Pieterse built one of his first sites from scratch up to 240,000 page views a month, earning from both affiliate programs and display ads. He was barely 21 years old, and was making more money that he'd ever earned before.
He hired a team, and made plans to start some new sites.
And then along came google.
We talk a bit about Jasper's background, getting started in websites, what he did to make his big site as successful as it was, and what he plans to do to try and recover from the 2020 Christmas update.
You can follow along with Jasper's journey on his youtube channel.
I had a great chat with Mike from Below Average Blogger in the past few weeks. Mike has recently come into the YouTube scene with his Below Average Blogger youtube channel, but he isn't what I would call a "newbie." Mike has a few websites that he is currently growing (and learning on), but he is also pulling in other side hustle dollars with his writing and voice over skills.
What I like about Mike (and this interview) is that it is clear to me that Mike is "all-in" when it comes to making money online. There is no doubt in his mind that he will grow his earnings, making it a question of 'when' rather than 'if.'
Michael Hess cold emailed me a few weeks ago to ask me about my experiences teaching on Skillshare. I've been pretty up front about my struggles and progress on the platform (consistency, violating ever-changing rules), and he asked to talk to me to gather information for his own product, Emporia.
I was happy to chat with him, and the conversation went so well that I asked him to come on the show to talk about the project. We talked a lot about his product and project (which is still in the development phase), and also about what it is like to go through this process.
if you want to find out more about Emporia, here's the link.
I recently had a really enjoyable chat with One Hour Professor Ron Stefanski. He's a content publisher (niche websites and YouTube). We talked a lot about the big site he had listed with Flippa to try and sell at the end of the year, the growth of his YouTube channel in 2020, whether he thought his college education was a good investment, and so much more.

Aloha! It is so enjoyable to talk shop with other very motivated, hard working creators! Especially when they also have a passion for the outdoors as I do. Beau has been in the business of working on websites for years, and has recently started to develop a portfolio of his own. We talk a little bit about his background, and dive into his recent experience buying a site through Motion Invest.
If you want to follow Beau, here's his Youtube Channel Waves & Websites.
I have no idea how she does it. Seng Nickerson has a job, a family, takes time for herself and her health, and still managed to produce content for her websites and YouTube channels consistently. A serial entrepreneur, Seng got into websites years ago, well before most of us even considered it. But it didn't click right away, and it wasn't until the last few years when she managed to dial it in.

Meet blogger and small YouTuber Luke Jordan. This is a very casual "in the trenches" type interview, so those fans of the show who love very informal content--THIS IS FOR YOU! We talked a lot about goals with our online businesses ventures and the challenges of getting there, trying to find some levity, growing on YouTube, and creating content that we really won't want to make.

Hello folks, meet Two Hour Blogger Nick Alan. Nick is a musician who started a website a handful of years ago, never realizing that the band would break up and the website would become his main focus. This is an interview that helps us get to know Nick, his strategy, and documents where he is with his business. We'll try and circle back around to him in 6-12 months to see what has changed!

I had a really cool chat with environmental psychologist Lee Chambers earlier this year. Lee made the jump in 2020 to start his consulting business. While many hunkered down and scaled back their efforts, Lee did the opposite and took some major risks. I find his attitude and outlook on life inspiring, and I think you will too.
This episode is a conversation I had with Mike Wilson of Speak Audibly earlier this year. He is an author, coach, and consultant. With this stacking of skills and accomplishments, you might be tempted to write him off as just another one of the typical gurus trying to make a lot of money quickly.
This would be a mistake.
Mike Wilson is not just trying to make a living. He is a guy who honestly wants to help people, and to make a difference.
He is compelling, both in his backstory and in his telling of it.
He is skillful. In the hour I spoke to to this gentleman, he had me acknowledging painful vulnerabilities that I can not speak of to my own mother, or admit to myself. He wielded his insight like a sword and a band-aid.
His clients probably love him.
Phil Hughes has the entrepreneurial bug. He still has a full-time job, but is working hard day in and day out to learn enough and to grow enough to launch a successful software product of his own. Phil candidly admits that he hasn't "made it" just yet, but that doesn't mean his story isn't interesting, or that we can't learn from it. In fact, I would argue that it makes his story more compelling...because it is real, and represents what it is like for most of us who are still working to that "made it" point.
Phil loves fishing and the outdoors, as well as guitar playing. In this episode, we talk about how he is working to try and combine his skills as a software development with his love of fishing.

I bought some sites that have a lot of content on them, which is awesome, but there is so much content that I can't really work on it all that much. I let them do what they do while I work on other projects. In this episode, I talk through some content upgrades that I did with Content Refined on a few of my articles in 2020. Tracey Ferrin might be the most genuine and positive person I have ever talked to. Seriously. She is a woman, wife, and mother who was faced with some pretty serious life challenges, and managed to persevere and overcome them. Now that her kids are almost all grown, she is building up a business of her own as an author, coach, and content creator.
You can find out more about Tracey, as well as her products, services, and social accounts on her website.
Today's episode is a great chat with Jerry Abiog, the CMO and Co-Founder of Standard Insights, a AI guided marketing platform. We talked a lot about his product and company, and also what it is like to make the leap from employee to entrepreneur (and also what it takes).
Today's guest is Phil Pelucha, who specializes in building business relationships.
He is a podcaster, coach, and business owner, with a goal of helping struggling business owners and entrepreneurs. In this episode, we talk about the power of podcasting, and how a podcast can help you grow your business even if no one in your niche knows who you are just yet.
Sam Kamani was a real pleasure to speak with. He was funny, energetic, crazy smart, experienced, and enthusiastic. While he can talk in depth about startups, entrepreneurship, eSports, marketing, and more, we mostly talked about when to persist and when to pivot in our businesses.
You can find out more about Sam (and his books and his podcast) via his website samkamani.com.
After struggling in the Japanese education system, Natsune Oki moved to Seattle and found her feet. This move was the catalyst that put her on the entrepreneurial path. Early in her career, she is making moves that many of us who have been around the block for a while think twice about, or never even build up the confidence to move forward on. If you want to know more about this very motivated young woman, you can find her through social media or her Life Up Education TV brand.
I am not sure that I have laughed in a podcast as much as I did during my interview with The Get Up Girl podcast host Joanna Vargas.
Vargas is an entrepreneur, business owner, creative, and coach, with dreams of moving into the world of public speaking. She teaches and leads others, but never goes full-on-guru. In a world of fake-it-til-you-make-it, Vargas leads with her relatable/down to earth real world experience and personality.
While I did give Vargas air time to talk about her business and back story, we did spend a lot of time chatting back and forth about business as an art, which gave me some pretty valuable insight into what is going on inside that agile mind of hers.
I say it again and again, I love talking to smart and passionate people. This conversation checked all the boxes. From helping small startups and first time entrepreneurs to develop apps and products, to his fear of flying, to his love of shiny muscle cars, Jon Skulemowski of Armia Systems both taught me tons and entertained me.
You might not know Dave Schneider's name, but if you've been around the digital marketing world, you have probably heard of NinjaOutreach, a SAAS company he co-founded and then sold. In this interview, Dave and I talked a lot about getting into SAAS and what he had to do in order to build and grow NinjaOutreach, and what he is doing now that he has moved on.

Chelsea Clarke is someone I definitely look up to. She is a working multiple angles to make the most of her knowledge, from building/buying/selling income producing websites, to helping others buy/sell online businesses, to teaching others to do the same. It is no surprise that she is really, really busy!
Chelsea invested $500 into a dead site with no traffic but lots of content and turned it into $16,000. This is a great read and has definitely inspired me to think about my strategy a bit differently.

I had a great chat talking with side hustler Adrian Diaz, who is becoming well known for his growing "Hasta La Vista Boss" brand. Adrian is still in the trenches, working hard as a crane operator during the day, and working on all of his various side hustle ventures (niche websites, lead generation, SEO services, youtube, podcast, merch, real estate investing) at night.

I had a really enjoyable chat with Carl Broadbent, who I am just getting to know as our community has grown. Carl is working diligently on sites of his own, as well as developing another side hustle doing keyword research for others for a reasonable fee. Carl is paying really close attention to the recent algo updates, and is actively working super hard on his niche sites (getting content published and working on optimizing the sites for speed). Carl is also an active YouTuber like myself, and is doing a great job growing a channel of his own.
Here's Carl's YouTube channel if you want to follow him on his journey.
Location Rebel's Sean Ogle is someone I have followed for a long time on Youtube. His channel is focused primary on delivering content to help people make the jump from traditional careers to working for themselves leveraging the internet. He got started down this past years before I did, after an unexpected job transition left him with having to make some pretty significant life and work decisions. Ultimately, his decision to travel and to start a travel blog put him on the path to his now full-time gig. His hard work and persistence has put him in the position that many of us are on the hunt for---having more control over life and time freedom.
If you want to know more about Sean, check out his Youtube channel or check out the Location Rebel website.

When I look back at the person I was at 24, I wish I had half as much motivation and focus as MasterTalk's Brenden Kumarasamy. Brenden is a public speaker and consultant who helps people improve their speaking skills, while also working full time at a job that he really loves at IBM.
This interview went all over the place (and sometimes off the rails), from talking about improving youtube channel content, to public speaking tips (like how to involve humor) and knowing when to say when and go all in. But I enjoyed this lively chat and this impressive young man, and I have no doubt we'll be hearing good things about him soon.
If you want to learn more about Brenden, you can find him via his MasterTalk website and also over at his youtube channel.

I had such a great chat with Justin Rule of Sparrow Websites, a US based company focusing on helping small businesses and entrepreneurs launch their websites quickly and affordably. He went to university to study the ocean, and ended up co-running a website design company and raising kids/chickens.
Justin has tons of insight and experience to talk about, the surface of which we barely scratched in this interview. You can find out more about his story here: https://www.sparrowwebsites.com/team/justin-wants-to-be-on-your-podcast/

Super grateful to have the chance to talk to Matt Diggity of Diggity Marketing (as well as LeadSpring, Authority Builders, The Search Initiative, and the Chiang Mai SEO Conference) about all of the things that he knows and does (that I could fit into a 45 minute chat).

Matt reached out to me a few months ago to chat about the Income Store situation, and offered to help in any way he could. Lacking any real task for him to do, I asked if he'd want to come on the channel to talk about what he knows all about. The honest truth was that at the time I was talking to him, I didn't really understand the breadth of his knowledge, (SEO, running successful businesses, building teams, buying and selling websites, website operation, building vs buying, launching a successful course, Facebook groups, Youtube).
Then I started looking up all his work and I was shocked at my ignorance, because so much of his content was so quality and helpful. Some of it went over my head too, but that's okay.
But I realized also that he'd be a great person for people who follow my content to get to know, simply because he just obviously knows his stuff and he is in the trenches. Not just selling a course after one win. He's in it, day in and day out.
When chatting with him, I honestly had to just make sure to cut myself off after a reasonable amount of time, or I could literally have picked his brain for hours.

Building up a "make money online" business in any shape or form requires a lot of work, and not a small amount of risk. Sometimes, what you are risking is money. Other times, what you are risking is your feelings, or perhaps your self-esteem. When you put your face out there into the world, when you open yourself and share about yourself, people respond to it. Sometimes positively. Sometimes negatively. Sometimes a well-meaning combination of both.
As my YouTube channel has grown, I've received an increasing amount of support and criticism. In general, I handle the debbie-downers pretty well. With trolls, it is pretty easy to dismiss them and their comments, because you know where that feedback is coming from (no need to listen to jerks).
But what about when it comes from people you consider to be your colleagues and/or friends?
I did this interview back in April 2020. Jaryd Krause is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, for reals. What I like about Jaryd (aside from his easy going personality and humility) is his drive to learn and grow. When other people might be tempted to coast and enjoy, he is still pushing hard to push himself personally and professionally.
His business is about leveraging his experience building a portfolio of online businesses to help others do the same. Since I am very interested in this topic, it was really easy to blow through an hour in a hurry. I think you'll find a lot of value here.

This is a interview I did with Leon Angus in May 2020. Leon is such a great model for what is possible if you really commit to learning and growing. Building confidence in ourselves as we navigate in our only endeavors is a critical part of this journey. In the beginning, there can be a lot of anxiety or fear. It is an unknown world for many of us, and it feels a lot like taking action while wearing a blindfold. What's going to happen if I do this? Overcoming this anxiety and making my moves without any external support or validation is a major goal of mine in 2020. Part of this is having enough knowledge and skill to make good decisions, which I am building over time. Part of this is being willing to take the risk of failing.
In this episode, I'm just going to come right now and talk about how hard it is to take action without the approval of others.

I had a good chat this morning with someone in the community, who has the skills and knowledge to make the jump but can't get past the roadblocks that seem to be in the way. I wanted to talk a little bit about that chat (keeping this person safely anonymous of course), and share whatever value I could glean from it with you.

This is an interview that I previously published over on my youtube channel, and it is special to me because it is the FIRST ONE that I ever did online.
Jon and I were both super nervous, and mostly we did it because we wanted to get better at doing it. I appreciate Jon's willingness to submit and participate, and we ended up having a really good time.
What is this interview about? Mostly it is us talking about the challenges of getting started online, and we talked a lot about how Jon get started. He is a blogger, affiliate marketer, Facebooker, and youtuber. I've watched his growth in the past year and it is really fun to hear him talk about where he was a year ago, and to see him today, knowing what he managed to achieve.

This is Part I of a two hour interview that I did with my friend Richard Patey, who is an experienced website operator, buyer, and seller. This interview was also posted over on my youtube channel, and you are welcome to actually view the action in addition to listening to the content if you like.
In this portion of the interview, I got to ask the questions I often get from the community, about growing a website beyond the beginning to intermediate stages to something much more valuable. Do we need to pay for images, do we need to invest in this or that to grow the site? I really enjoy hearing Richard's take on this, probably because it is so similar to my own thoughts.
Richard has a great email news letter, where he shares both written and audio content. While it is a paid newsletter, he also offers free content, which I recommend that you check out. You can access his newsletter archives (and see what is available for free) over on his substack page: https://patey.substack.com/.

I spent some time this morning working on my Adsense/Ezoic case study, which got hit pretty hard by the may the 4th update. I have had concerns about the speed of the site (with and without ads). One of the neat things about the online business world is that it allows people (who are willing to take the risk and do the work) to monetize their personal knowledge and skills. This is most evident in what people are able to do with personal blogs and the hobby niches.
Darren Enns is currently working full-time, and travels tons for work. While in a hotel room on a work trip one night, he decided to stop killing his brain cells with hours of television, and to start turning his hobby (fishing) into money. Thus, FishinMoney.com was born.
Is Darren a guru who knows everything? Nah (and neither am I). But does he know stuff from his experience? Yes, he most certainly does. Darren has experience in starting a website, monetizing it and earning money with affiliate offers, applying to affiliate programs, with writing articles, weathering the storms of google updates, with outsourcing content, starting and growing a youtube channel, and making video content. I think he's in this for the long haul, and I look forward to catching up with him in 12 months to see his growth, both in his site and in his confidence.

I hate Done-For-You services and bonus templates. Yes, people love to sell them, love to include them with their offers to improve the perceived value of the product. People love the idea that they can use these products and services to skip the hard stuff, and get to the place in the make money online world where things are easy.
There's not much that's easy about making money online.
Yes, you can utilize DFU services, but in the end, are you ultimately better off? Do you have the knowledge and expertise of the person who crafted those products?
Probably not.
This is just a quick episode, mostly for those folks who are nearer to the beginning of their journey than the middle. Those who have a little bit of cash on hand and are thinking about how to invest it to make the most of it.
The title speaks for itself.
Many folks struggle to start. Of those who do, only a small percentage find a way to make that start into something real and significant. In the beginning, a few hundred extra dollars seems almost impossible. But when you find a way to get there, the next hurdle is a thousand, and two thousand, and so on. When you are still working a full time job, and have a family, those next goals can seem unreachable.
Jesse Foutch inspires me. he is about the same age as me, and he knows a lot more than me about wordpress. But, like me, he is still in the intermediate stages of his make money online career. He's started some things, had a few successes, gotten distracted, and failed now and then. He has a great can-do attitude, he is super focused, and has that belief in himself...if he just puts in the work, and keep showing up, that he'll figure it out. I love that he is taking risks (even small ones) to try out new strategies and methods.
Jesse hasn't made his side hustle his MAIN hustle. Not yet. But he is on the hunt, and I am confident that he is going to make it there.

Check out this interview I did in early May 2020 with rising blogger and Youtuber Steph Castelein of EachDaySlow.com. Steph is still in the beginning stages of her journey, but you don't have to talk with her long to hear and see that she has got it figured out. After building up her initial hobby blog on Wix to a respectable amount of traffic, Steph has gotten more serious about making her blogging hobby into a business.
In this interview, we talk tons about where her business is now, how Pinterest is working for her and how others can use it to get started, and about where she wants to go in the upcoming months and years.
I don't always note in these show notes when these interviews occurred, but this is one I want to remember, because I fully intend to catch back up to Steph in the future to see your progress and how her business and mindset has changed.

Making money online is a continual exercise in faith. Belief. Knowing that your moves will take you in the right direction, even if there are mistakes and false starts on the way. This is especially the case when you take the leap and launch your own product.
Many of us bloggers, content publishers and affiliate marketers...we create content that helps sell products every day! But seldom do we go that extra step of creating a product of our own. One that we put our real name on. One that embodies what we have learned. One that we have confidence in, that it will actually provide the result we promise.
With the changes in the Amazon Associates program, with the recent tumult after the Google Update, and then with the pandemic impacts on ad rates, many people are looking more closely at the idea of launching their own product.
But what would that look like? And how?
In this episode, I interview Jacob Caris. Jacob is a good friend of mine, who I have known and watched almost the entirety of his affiliate marketing career. I have seen him on his journey to scaling the heights of the Clickfunnels Dream Car program, to the upper ranks of the Legendary Marketer Program, and then to the leaderboard of the Tony Robbins/Dean Graziosi KBB launch. He's on the hunt for his first seven-figure year.
I have to apologize now before you jump into this episode, because when we started talking all my careful notes and planning went straight out the window. So you won't get the origin story, how he grew, all the standard steps forward and back that you might hear in other interviews. But I promise, there is plenty to learn here.

Landing that first job out of college is harder than ever, especially if you have high expectations for yourself and big dreams. How do you overcome that hurdle of inexperience, in both your desired profession and in life?
This is an interview with Sarah Clow, who at the time of publishing this episode (2020) is the Head of Social Media & Marketing Partnerships at Ezoic. While obviously intelligent and charismatic, Sarah seems to be an unlikely choice to be the head of anything, given her age and experience level. Not to say that Sarah isn't a great fit for her job (she is) or that Ezoic shouldn't have hired her (clearly she's awesome and hiring her was a great idea). But in general, it is unusual these days to see a company take a risk on a young person - someone who hasn't yet had a chance to prove themselves to be valuable or a solid investment.
On the surface, many people might wonder at why I wanted to bring Sarah on this podcast. After all, what does she know about building an online business?
Those of us who have been in the game of building websites for monetization (or making money online in any other capacity) know that most of making it online has little to do with the nuts and bolts strategy, and much, much more to do with your mindset, mentorship, drive, and determination. At this stage of her burgeoning career, Sarah already embodies the best of all of these attributes, and her early success is a sign of what we can expect to see in the future if she stays true to herself and her work ethic.
I find her energy and optimism about work and life energizing, and motivating. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with her about her progress so far, and I look forward to follow her next steps as she finds her way in the online space.

Hello and welcome! This is the first episode of this new podcast. My name is Emilia Gardner, and I'm a brand new podcaster with brand new goals. I use this time to talk about starting a new project (like a podcast) when I'm not confident at all that it will be successful. Ultimately, I understand that this podcast will be a journey, and that I can't judge for a long time the success of the venture.
I need to put in the work first, and then see how it plays out.
